in this video, consensus with Gerald seems to refute his initial dual gain ISO claims. camera applies NR at 16,000 ISO: kinda weird, not sure if its a bug or what (previous A7S models didn't behave like that).
-
Medium format & cheap don't really associate.. that said the GFX 50R is now only $3500 which places it around FF cams like A7R4/A7S3/R5. Unfortunately the video specs are crap..
-
The R6 features the same sensor as the 1DX3.. and also shares similar features (both in stills & video) yet costs 1/3 of its price. You're probably right but you just never know with Canon these days..
-
I have zero doubt it is going to be 10-bit 4:2:2 as even the $2500 R6 has such codec. The pricing however does appear a tad steep for an entry level cine cam although Canon C line has never been cheap..
-
Cinema cams have active cooling and therefore don’t overheat. You can clearly see the fan vents on the side. Probably no weather sealing though.
-
The form factor and model number would suggest a price point and segment under the C200, which surely has a mark 2 coming soon. This is basically the super long awaited C100 mk3.

My Canon EOS R5 recording 8K video 50 minutes straight
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Not the least bit surprised. Canon went through all this trouble to cripple the camera, they weren't going to suddenly remove all those limitations. What they did is loosen the cripple leash a tiny bit, just in order to appear to be doing something in the right direction. I'm betting they'll be unlocking it little by little during the products life cycle. Expect decent HQ recording times in a year or two. Sad state of affairs for early adopters.. -

My Canon EOS R5 recording 8K video 50 minutes straight

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64261516 Horshack reported 69 minutes of 8K after an 11 hour deep freeze. So it would appear that temperature reading does affect the timer, although I’m sorry to hear your attempt didn’t succeed in similar results. -

The Tilta cooling system may work for all we know. The deep freeze experiment showed that the R5 timer only seems to get triggered after a certain temp threshold. ...Of course these latest findings prove we don’t even need an external cooling system to begin with! -

How about that deep freeze test where the R5 was able to shoot like an hour before overheating warning? Looks like the timer gets triggered after a certain temp threshold and the battery door hack defeats the artificial recovery time. Canon will never apologize just like Apple never did during their numerous scandals like Antennagate where Jobs responded: "Just avoid holding it that way" - led to widespread mockery, and the phrase "you're holding it wrong" still sticks around whenever an Apple product has a fault. Eventually, Steve Jobs held a press conference at Cupertino and announced free bumper cases for all users, saying: "We're not perfect… but we want all our users to be happy." Same with bendgate: Apple responded to Bendgate, stating that it had received only nine complaints of bent devices and that the damage occurring due to regular use was "extremely rare". Apple offered to replace phones that were bent. At best Canon will issue a firmware “fix” claiming “overheat management optimization” or something. -

EOSHD testing finds Canon EOS R5 overheating to be fake
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
hmm well I guess there goes the whole artificial timer conspiracy theory. now all we need is a portable cryogenic device to carry R5 during shoots! -
Just downloaded a few clips and did some grading in Resolve. Skin tones are still bust in this camera, typical Sony zombie green/yellow tint. That being said the huge codec means it's an easy fix. Definitely the nicest quality files out of a Sony mirrorless, by far.

EOSHD testing finds Canon EOS R5 overheating to be fake
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yikes what a messy situation. Although I guess the good news is no recall necessary. The rumored firmware update will probably “fix” the issue. They’ll claim a “bug” messed up recovery times and software “optimizations” will enhance heat management & recording times. -
No camera is perfect. We all have different needs. S1H is Netflix approved as it is one of the only large sensor hybrids that check marks their capture requirements ie. Timecode, high bitrate 10-bit 4:2:2 Log, DCI 4K, Anamorphic support. Of course the fact it has an active cooling system and won't overheat doesn't hurt. Narrative work rarely requires AF lenses so AF simply isn't an issue. It also has all the cine cam features like LUT assist, vector scopes etc. But for hybrid shooters, solo video shooters, vloggers, youtubers etc. AutoFocus is crucial, especially in FF which rules out the Pannys. R5 vs A7S3. Tough call. On paper, R5 should destroy A7S3. It has 45MP, 8K, DCI 4K, Better IBIS, better ergonomics, internal RAW. ..but in the real world, all that means nothing if your camera can't operate because it overheated. so by default, it would seem A7S3 wins. However if you're an outdoor shooter in warm weather, A7S3 may overheat even faster than R5. and when A7S3 overheats, it completely shuts off while it appears R5 allows you to switch to pixel-binned 4K.. but HQ recovery times are long. A7S3 does appear to be the safer bet if you're hard pressed for an upgrade. But if you already have an A73, is 12MP non-oversampled 4K really worth the 4200€ investment? Maybe for the HFR & 10-bit. I'll let you be the judge. Personally I'm not rushing in to buy either, hate being a beta-tester to first gen e-products.

Will Canon recall the EOS R5? Small first shipments
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Well the recall rumors are purely speculative so “in denial” is rather extreme. -

The NFS tests are very interesting, especially Test #2 where 1500 photos were taken before switching the R5 to video mode & they still got over 17 minutes of 10-bit 8K recording. That particular test seems to kinda contradict Gerald’s tweet about not having a single second of HQ video after shooting stills for an hour. Speaking of Gerald, he did a 3 hour live stream about R5/R6. I haven’t had time to watch it but just happened to skim through it and he addressed Dan Watson’s A7S3 vs R5 overheat results. He kinda cops out by saying their pre production Sony units may be different and then suggests to Dan to redo the test with the Sony camera -in the shade- as he admits direct sunlight may not dissipate heat correctly on the Sony. Perhaps he should be the one to take the A7S3 out in the sunlight to corroborate or not Dans results. -
Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah but it still feels like a free pass because a majority of the media is saying « A7S3 NEVER OVERHEATS » including the leaked sponsored B&H promo video. At least with the Canons, even brand ambassador Peter McKinnon talked about overheating in his sponsored video and Canon themselves published a detailed overheating chart. Sony per usual haven’t done that. Actually they claim you can shoot until you’re media card fills up or battery dies, which is a sneaky way to not admit overheating yet covering themselves legally. What is extremely strange is that in that one Florida sunlight test, the A7S3 shut down before the R5 and was measured a couple degrees hotter too. So is Canon being conservative with the overheating or is the Sony just not dissipating heat as well in that particular condition ? So many unknowns, it’s frustrating. I was interested in both cams but will probably sit this round out. Looks like the spec race has gone too far and this first gen of 4K120p cams just isn’t there yet as far as reliability.. -

What’s funny is this camera is barely even out, And it is already redeemed DOA. Anyone here old enough to remember A7S2 launch? There was like one batch and then 4-6 months back order. Back then the tsunami was claimed to have disrupted Sony’s sensor facilities. I have no idea what the stock situation is with R5 or if a recall is planned but we are barely through a global pandemic and COVID19 did cause Canon Japan factories to shut down. Just saying.. -

Interesting how you seem to conveniently omit the testings where the A7S3 shut done BEFORE the R5. Whos the fanboy now? BOTH cameras overheat, albeit the R5 more systematically whereas the Sony seems more unpredictable depending on sunlight, temp and codec settings. The R5 has a LQ « safety » mode that in theory never overheats. More tests need to be done there. -
The guy needs to just stick to the facts, cut the sales pitch. It’s like Behiri apologizing in his R6 review to his fake docu subjects. Cmon you knew the camera was going to overheat. You even had the ice packs ready. Just give us the facts and leave the narrative drama at home FFS..
