Highly contradictory reviews on EOS R6 overheating limitation
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You’re reading waaaay too much into my comment Andrew. I didn’t mean to take “sides” with Drake.. was just clearing up the confusion that other members may have had concerning his on going présence here. I personally couldn’t care less either way lol.. I will try and do my best to not refer to any of your “foes” in the future though as it clearly seems to get you triggered..?! -

@Jordan Drake is who he was thinking of and used to comment here before the fallout with Andrew. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
True those are some pretty significant upgrades for stills shooting and levels things much more with Sony's higher-end offerings. I'm being very cautious as well as I simply can't have a camera that bricks on me under any circumstances (which certainly rules out R6). Looks like 1DX3 isn't such a bad investment after all as it does offer FF oversampled 10-bit 4:2:2 4K & 5.5K RAW without any overheating issues. Still the most reliable pro hybrid from Canon! -

Of course an 8.2K oversampled 4K IQ is going to be vastly superior to a non oversampled pixel binned 4K IQ. That's why it's called HQ lol.. At least there is a 4K HQ mode, unlike the A7S3's non oversampled 4K. A comparison in between those two will be interesting. As for the overheating, what I would really like to get confirmation is if when overheating warning is turned on, can you switch to regular 4K without the camera ever bricking. Also still no serious RS tests... -

Cmon dude, every single company thinks like that. Especially electronics. You are delusional if you think you’re favorite company really cares about why you buy their gear. They spec a model, price it, market it and pray for the best in terms of sales. Nothing more nothing less. Anyways only time will tell if R5/R6 are a hit or a fluke. Surely some sales will be affected by the overheating, I am certainly going to wait for more extensive real-world stress tests before considering ordering one. But again calling them a fiasco, saying Canon are done sounds extremely premature and indeed bashing for the sake of it.. -

At least the R5 has 4K modes that will never brick the camera (or so people claim). R6 however overheats in all 4K modes which I understand may be a deal-breaker for some people, especially if you’re in the warmer hemisphere.. -

..but it’s the video side that’s quite the breakthrough for Canon shooters (overheating aside). If i were a stills only shooter, I’m not quite sure I’d feel the urge to upgrade from an EOS R/RP. Canon are clearly aiming R5/R6 to hybrid shooters and EOS Cinema line users such as myself looking for B-cams. -

I love it these cameras aren’t even out yet the EOSHD jury is already out and the tribe has spoken: “Canon are done for video” ” R5/R6 are lemons” While I agree the overheating issues are a growing concern and may affect sales, I still think both cameras will be a hit and the IQ in the HQ modes should be amazing. It seems that in order to overcome the overheating issues, Sony had to abandon oversampling, quad-bayer sensor and who knows what else.. always some kind of compromise with small hybrid cameras! Anyways, I think we still have to wait for more in-depth real world tests and official A7S3 announcement before making such bold statements as the above.. -
Highly contradictory reviews on EOS R6 overheating limitation

To be fair Jordan did mention he was shooting in cool Canadian summer conditions (average temperature this month in Calgary was 10-23 degrees Celsius) whereas Behiri admitted he shot in 29 degrees weather (average temp in Tokyo currently 23-30 degree Celsius). That to me would explain the conflicting overheating reports from those two. The official Canon R6 overheating chart is listed for 23 degree weather: That said, it is pretty appalling Behiri would use a pre-production R6 for what he claims was a “2 day shoot” with apparently long interviews/takes in 29 degree weather. That’s a disaster waiting to happen.. -
the full HDMI port is a god bless 👌

it's from the YT video posted above. the black boxes are just coverups of the Sony ID tags to protect the leaker. more curious about what XAVC codec is used for the 10-bit 4:2:2 on screen.
-
Yeah I highly doubt internal BRAW but external to a BM Video Assist remains a possibility.
-
^ Again, R6 overheats in all 4K modes. Not a camera I would trust on a pro shoot. B-cam for short clips maybe.
-
Yeah R6 overheats in all 4K modes. Once it overheats, you basically gotta wait for it to cool off (which depends on shooting environment temperature). It clearly isn't the right tool for long interviews or all day run & gun shoots. Maybe ok as a B-cam. A-cam never on a pro shoot given the uncertainty.

Disappointed in the Canon R6 - Coming From A Canon User

^ 4K24/25/30p is same situation. Only R5 has "Not limited by heat" 4K24/25/30p modes. -

All that video does is confirm the official Canon overheating chart: R6 will overheat in all modes. clearly not the camera for long interviews or all-day run & gun shooting. Behiri jumped the shark and shouldn't have used that camera for his 2-day shoot, wrong tool for the job but I guess you learn the hard way. -
Actually according to Canon, the R6 does have a time limit in 4K30p and hence overheats. Only R5 has a "not limited by heat" 4K30p mode: We know nothing of the temperature or length Behiri was shooting at so maybe nothing too surprising considering the above chart. Anyways, R6 is off my list for now but I still have some hopes left for R5.

Damn.. that is a scary bad review. I sincerely hope R5 does a better job than that but in any case I will be awaiting more in-depth reviews of the overheating before even considering purchasing it. Very alarmed by this even though the details are sketchy.

As an ex-wedding videographer I can assure you there is a market for night-time low light events. With the new AP deal I could see some news broadcast agents make use of it as well. Specialised market for sure but then again that is what the S is about!
-
I’m assuming for the low-light capabilities. That is the one area where this camera should trump the competition.
-
..so half the MP of an A73, no oversampled 4K, and a slight crop in all shooting modes? all that for $3500? in a couple regards, it kinda feels like a downgrade. 10-bit & no overheating sounds nice but it’s not exactly mind-blowing either given those caveats and it sure looks like Sony have been very careful as to not cannibalize the rest of their camera lineup, including the ever so popular A73 and flagship FX9.

Where do you guys read no IBIS? The latest rumors talks about a digital IS function add-on, which coupled to IBIS and lens IS should give similar results to what Canon is offering on R5/R6 (IBIS + EIS).
-
Again I respectfully disagree. Z6 isn’t bad but you’re making it to be a bit more than what it is. Z6 can’t shoot RAW. You need to send the camera in for a paid upgrade and then it unlocks ProRes RAW externally. You’ll still need to buy and attach an Atomos recorder. Not a very elegant, practical or cheap solution. The inclusion of internal Log recording would be much more useful on a MILC. Also your claim that “ Nikon Z6 is after all the only sub $3K FF camera with 4K raw!“ is false. Sigma FP does FF internal RAW DNG recording for $2K.
-
^ we're not talking about the Z50 but the newly announced Z5. @IronFilm Let's agree to disagree. I see nothing impressive or exciting about the Z5. It's a cut down Z6 hit indeed with the cripple hammer for video. FWIW, I have absolutely zero interest in the RP either. Never have, never will. I just think it's a better deal at the current $800 price. I recommended it to a dude that missed his 5D2. Nothing ironic about that. Personally, I hope Nikon don't screw up the Z6S but from the moniker and the rumors it sounds like a minor incremental update to Z6, which is kind of late to the game in comparison to what Canon & Sony are releasing.
-
Only thing funny is you chasing me around this site with the failed intent of proving me wrong at every corner. I recommended the RP the other day to an amateur on a tight budget that missed his Canon 5D2. Furthermore, the RP came out in 2018, is below the magic 1 grand price and is fully compatible with EF-S lenses in which it shares the same crop factor. It's in my opinion a better value than the $1500-$2100 Z5 kit. At that price range a Z6/A73 would seem to be better suited for hybrid shooting. The XT3 as great of a camera as it is, isn't FF anything, it belongs in a separate category IMO. Regardless, my main point was that Nikon needs to seriously up its ante and innovate and not go backwards if it wants to be taken seriously in what is already a battle of the titans in between Canon & Sony.
