  1. Yeah it looks stunning because 4K120 is simply stunning! Especially at 10-bit 4:2:2. The only cameras that could achieve that previously were ciné cams. The FS5 II for example, could shoot 4K120 RAW but only in couple seconds burst mode and externally with expensive flagship recorder only..

    I still dream of owning it but can’t really justify the expense after purchasing a M9 + 28mm Summicron last year.. The good news for video though is that an update gave the Q2 full manual control with shutter speed control/priority (was previously locked on auto only in video mode). If you can afford it this camera is a hybrid hidden gem imo.. it’ll be mine some day!
  4. Motion cadence has never been an issue on FF Canons with ALL-I codecs, especially at these high bitrates. 24p will look more than fine rest assured. Check out Peter McKinnon’s footage for proof. Also now that we know CLOG3 is coming, DR shouldn’t be much of a concern either. At this point rolling shutter and ISO performance are the only major unknown variables as far as cons. CPU/NLE performance for HFR & 8K is also good to know (I’m on holiday with just a smartphone and shitty connection so keep the info coming folks!) apparently 8K RAW sample footage is coming next from that YT account so stay tuned.. Btw, is that 4K120p footage already slowed down in cam ?
  5. @noone like I said it depends on your style and requirements. I shot quite a few weddings back in the day with a 5D3 during the day and would switch to A7S/A7S2 for video/stills during the evening, again with just a fast prime. Cropping & large prints were often a challenge with just 12/5MP. Yeah it’s always doable but 24-30MP and above is simply the new norm. I will still purchase the A7S3 for specific low light use and the video specs but with 12MP it is ruled out of my book for serious pro hybrid run & gun shoots. Looks like my combo will be like the good old days with a 5 series Canon all-rounder and a A7S for backup in low light (or when R5 overheats!).
  6. Meh.. fairly standard practice from them. Pre-pandemic this type of launch would have warranted a big hoopla press event in a staged environment with media card doors sealed but instead they went with sending preproduction cameras with NDAs on footage etc. We’ll have to wait for production units to get more than the “hands-on” review..

  9. Depends on your shooting style also. I mostly shoot stills with a 35mm 1.4 on FF. I like the convenience of switching to an APS-C crop for more telephoto 50mm reach. With a 12MP sensor that would mean 8MP cropped images which is really pushing it for pro use. In comparison R5’s 45MP translates to 30MP APS-C shots. Thats not to say the 12MP A7S series don’t have their purpose, for dim situations like concerts / nocturnal events, where a flash isn’t desired, they rule. But that remains niche purposes imo.
  10. The Sigma FP is a 8-bit only internal recording camera, has no 4K60p, no PDAF and Sigma just confirmed it can’t even record LOG due to « design limitations ». It’s a very powerful camera in relation to its minuscule size and surely an ingenious passive cooling design, but thermal issues remain and are surely the cause of such limitations. The S1H, despite an active cooling system and body almost twice the size/weight can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop. No PDAF either on that camera. Canon chose to unlock superior specs at the risk of overheating, which I understand is a polarizing decision, however I’m not sure there is a strong case to be made against its thermal balance giving the power it unleashed compared to those two cameras with a passive cooling system. Sony however, if the spec rumors are true may be on such a breakthrough..
  11. Wow lower RAW bitrates and CLOG3 is huge. R5 definitely seems like the better investment now.
  12. 1DX2 won’t overheat but you’re dealing with a DSLR brick, crop factor, 8-bit recording and the terribly inefficient MJPEG codec will fill up your card faster than the R5/R6 reaches overheat limit!
  13. My last Fuji was an XT2 and it would overheat pretty quickly during exterior summer shoots. I'd assume it only got worst with H265 10-bit..
  14. I was under the impression the quad-bayer sensor could give you best of both worlds (I.e. 48MP for stills, 12MP for video)? I will probably still purchase the A7S3 no matter what as I need a B-cam to my FS7 but I still maintain Sony is going to have to knock it out of the ballpark on the video specs front if it is going with 12MP.
  15. @wolf33d wow never thought I'd see the day were you'd be advocating for Canon! looks like they really are shaking things up when die-hard Sony users are thinking about switching systems! jokes aside, let's wait & see what A7S3 brings to the table. I don't really trust SAR rumours. they've been wrong so many times. if Sony does forgive the quad-bayer sensor and comes out with another 12MP camera, it's certainly going to be divisive for hybrid shooters and dare I say will remain a niche camera. That's half the MP of an A7III so I don't see many hybrid Sony users "downgrading" to a 12MP camera for stills in 2020. For video though, I guess that could mean another low-light champ, good DR and super fast readout times = low RS. I still feel that's not going to be enough to really win the battle, even if they finally include 10-bit.. especially after a 4 year follow-up.
  16. ..or just shoot normal 4K for your long recordings and sprinkle 8K/4K60p/4K120p when available/necessary. those modes will eat up storage space anyways so not great for long recordings. that is how I shot with 5D3 + ML RAW or even on EOS R (FHD+ FHD HQ / 4K). according to a R5 tester on YT, the camera never fully shuts down during overheat and still allows normal 4K shooting:
  17. That’s excellent news. Glad to hear the camera will never be in a fully shutdown state due to overheating (like older gen Sony’s or Fuji’s) and will continue to allow normal 4K recording. Thats pretty reassuring. You should never be left on standby on set contrary to what has been speculated.

  19. Only up to 4K30p.. 4K60p has a S35 crop and drops to 10-bit 4:2:0 LongGOP. Obviously no 8K or 4K120p FF. No DPAF or internal RAW either. And that's with a fan and body almost twice the weight.
  20. @ade towell There are two ways of looking at this, glass half-empty or half-full. Andrew made a good post about this: https://www.eoshd.com/8k/a-closer-look-at-the-canon-eos-r5-lower-quality-4k-mode-to-avoid-thermal-cut-off/ R5/R6 can be used without overheating issues. If you want maximum performance (which no other hybrid camera can currently give you) well you are prone to thermal cut off limits and high RS. I think it's a fair trade-off situation and Canon are being open about it as opposed to Sony. Concerning the R6 4K crop, it is of x1.07. It apparently takes a 4K DCI image and truncates it to UHD. No biggie. As for the S1H being a better hybrid video camera, that is subjective. The poor AF and weight (1Kg vs 680g) makes it a no go for me personally and if you want FF no crop 4K60p in 10-bit.. only R5/R6 will give you that. But of course YMMV.

  22. R6 will overheat in 4K60p after 30-40mn & in 4K30p after 40-50mn (depending on FF/S35 modes). Shouldn't be any overheating issues in 4K24p/25p. Let's just remember we're talking FF no crop oversampled 4K60p with DPAF in 10-bit 4:2:2 internal. In comparison, the only hybrid camera on the market that can get close to that is the almost twice more expensive S1H which can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop in 10-bit 4:2:0 longGOP and poor contrast AF... and that camera has active cooling on board!

  24. On R6 4K60p will overheat (30-35mn) as well as 4K30p (40-50mn) which I personally find are decent recording times for those particular modes. I never do long shots on high frame rate modes and if you’re doing long interviews, concerts or weddings you should have a second body or cine cam anyways. Otherwise just stick to 4K24p/25p for those long recordings and don’t worry about overheating issues. I think the whole overheating topic is overblown but of course let’s wait for some real life testing to find out more info about it.
