  1. Canon 5D IV Leica Q2 Fuji X100V Sony A9 / A9 II
  2. Sensor tech is cool but I'm more excited about the overall package which Sony seems to be in a lead position with Alpha series team & Alta Cine pro line features trickling down into their new: Xperia 1 II 4K60p. Venice CS. H265. 23.98FPS. Manual focus. Shutter Angle etc.. Alongside triple lens Zeiss DPAF system.
  3. What I meant is that the actual "leak" is BS. I remember a store in Luxembourg was taking pre-orders for the 1DX3 months ahead of release for 10K €. Just a highball estimate from a random store trying to get pre-orders & hype on rumour sites / google referencing. Everything points towards a 5D class product, adjusted for inflation and the newer tech I'd say were looking at around 4K-5K tops. The primary consumer is still going to be image and Canon won't sell a single R5 to photographers with a $7K price tag.
  4. I call this "leak" total BS.. just a store trying to get buzz.

My biggest gripe with Z series was no internal Log. You also gotta go external for 10-bit & ProRes RAW. If Nikon addressed those three points and threw in 4K60p on a Mk2 they might be competing. But somehow I doubt anything is coming soon. Are there even rumors of a Mark II Z line?
  6. I often shoot multi-cam setups with a C100/C200 so remote control comes in super handy. Its also very practical to transfer RAW stills or even video to an iPhone/iPad for editing/file sharing. Canon Connect is one of the rare camera apps that actually works.
  7. remote control for canon smartphone app. but I think the point is camera could release soon as its passed global certification.
  8. On design/build quality it's pretty hard to beat Leica. Fuji X being the poor mans Leica, I'd have to give them number one spot for style/ergonomics. I'm a sucker for dials, rangefinder systems & aperture rings. Ironically I don't own one at the moment (my XT2 got stolen) but XT4 is calling my name. Nikon Z is also a top contender for ergonomics. Super good balance of size, weight, buttons & quality. Too bad the system seems to have no momentum. Sony's are sleek.. but too many boring variations of the same body type. Menus are horrible. Overlays too. Feels like the GUI was designed by Sony-Ericsson team of 2004. Yes my FS7 remains a workhorses and imo best bang for buck cine cam, but it is clunky as hell to operate. Does get bonus points for shoulder mount conversion. Panasonic Imaging. Zero charisma. Never been a fan I'm afraid. Fully utilitarian design. No surprise they started out making micro wave ovens and vacuum cleaners. That heritage shows. Just kidding. S1 way too clunky/heavy for a mirrorless. Not fun to use. I do love EVA-1 & the old DVX cams. Canon. Not getting any design awards either. The whole rounded angle look inherited from DSLRs is getting dated. They do have the best grip though and clearest menu with fast responsiveness. Is that so much to ask for from other companies in 2020? Cinema line on the other hand are a joy to use, clever design all the way down to XC line. Again that grip.
  9. Lol if it were Nikon you may have a case in point! DL series was a 1" sensor fixed lens premium compact line that was basically DOA. I have a really grim feeling for Nikon. They haven't diversified their business at all and D6 was a snooze fest. No buzz around Z series either. Shame really as I had high hopes for them. Absolutely nothing to do with the FF flagship monster spec that is R5. Canon are counting on R5/R6 to shift RF lenses. Pandemic may slow down release but it is coming, no doubt about it.

My guess is that a lot of these companies (especially those without cinema divisions) are just too focused on imaging and let video users be their beta testers. Another reason video AF was ignored for years and unusable because of hunting, quick jumps etc.. doesn't help IBIS isn't a tech normally associated with cine cams.

I certainly remember XH1 had this very issue on launch and it was commented on a lot. I read a firmware update fixed it but I dunno for sure. So maybe there is hope..

description says the video was shot on a 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8
  13. Yeah in case it wasn't yet clear for anyone by now: EOS R has bad RS and a crop in 4K. R5 will be bringing 8K RAW / 4K120p 10-bit 4:2:2. No crop. With DPAF. That's in only second generation jump. Alpha series however are in their 4th gen and still capping at UHD 30p 8-bit 100mbps XAVC-S codec. Everyone is free to think what they want about brands/models/specs, and make their own assumptions but those are the facts folks.

What I'm saying is I didn't find it to be as distracting as others are making it to be, then again I prefer a stable handheld shot then a floating gimbal look. I do know what you mean about the jumpiness though, it was there on XH1. It is disappoint to know they haven't sorted that out with all the talk of improved IBIS spring tech.
  15. Yeah I don't see 8K as the main attraction, but more as a bonus really. I'd only use it sparingly for money shots. Just like I did ML RAW on my old 5D3. YMMV.
  16. ^ see the real use cases I've added. as for "actors & actresses", 35mm film the cinema standard for decades already resolves at an equivalent of 6K. and 70mm film (IMAX) is typically scanned at 11K. of course most projections and finishes are still in DCI 2K but 8K footage simply isn't as far-fetched as you may think.

Static shots look fine though, can't help but feel this IBIS issue is overblown by those expecting gimbal results. I think I'm about to pull trigger on a XT4. Coming from an XT2 it will surely blow my mind. That is unless I go for a sigma FP. 🤔
  18. I think you're looking at this the wrong way. It isn't about saving 8K files for later. It's about you're 2020 camera investment having lasting power for the years to come. Personally, I hate flipping gear. the longer I can own a camera the better. Hell I still find use for my 2012 C100 or my 2005 5D Classic. Some people still use/love the 1DC, even though its 4K isn't supersampled or even no crop. So I think it will be many years if not a decade before this 8K no crop RAW / 4K120p no crop 10-bit 4:2:2 camera will be "obsolete". Go ahead, mark my words. As for the 8K itself, my current iMac Pro has 5K resolution so already out resolves 4K footage. 8K isn't a distant future for me as I'll be seeing the benefits immediately. Real case use? I already use cropping a lot in 4K to macro inside timepieces, jewellery or even package shots in general. I could see a wedding videographer using this just to get that ring money shot from a distance without ruining the scene for guests or having to go 400mm and miss the overall candid atmosphere. 8K would allow 2-in-1. Having multiple video custom settings on the R system also means you can switch 4K to 8K as well as HFR on the fly. Very practical for above scenarios and just grabbing money shots in general.
  19. Yeah I'm into certain niche items myself and I've brought back some gems, just never had the time to go on deep dive search missions. Promising myself to go there solo next in order to really nerd out. Maybe find me some of those Canon FD dream lenses & other esoteric gear!
  20. @PaulUsher Couldn't have said it better myself. I've been using the R as a B-CAM to C100/C200 for Multicam shoots and it intercuts perfectly. It also of course doubles as a mirrorless 5D stills cam. All my DSLR flash accessories etc work perfectly on it. That's another great thing about Canon, cameras just work. Easy to operate. AF, WB, exposure always nailed. Clear menus, ergonomics. Anyways, I was thinking of dropping my C200 in favour of my FS7, but with no A7S3 on the horizon, I'm now thinking R5+C200 may be a better combo. Probably will wait a little longer but FS7 might actually get the axe. Again bad move on Sony delaying video oriented Alpha cam.
  21. RAW is 8K only, 4K is 10-bit 4:2:2. How useful is 8K? Nobody knows as nobody here has probably ever shot in it. Kinda uncharted territory but I can think of a few uses. Just like when ML gave us 5D2/5D3 users RAW. Files were enormous, recording time very limited.. but for those quick money shots it was the beez neez! It will eventually become standard so it's also a future-proof investment. Bit like the 1DC (minus the price).
  22. Yeah I can imagine it being a tad harder to circulate/communicate pre-google map, auto-translate app era. Almost too easy now! Shopping wise it remains the Mecca for me but not so much in a tech sense as I can imagine it once was (Akihabara was pretty underwhelming tbh). Speaking of nostalgia, the fact they still have things like Tower Records totally blew my mind. I felt like Marty McFly in Back to the Future!
  23. Not to act all millennial but Tokyo still felt plenty foreign enough for me in 2019 and looks a lot more exciting today than it was in 1991. Nostalgia is a powerful thing but not everything was better before. We just hit the reset button anyways. +1 on Sigma FP video review
  24. What you haven't heard? Canon Egypt gave the green-light for the R5 dentist undergrad beta test program! 🎬 🎬 🎬
