If high mirrorless video specs hurt pro cinema range, why does Sony do it?
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
1DC, 1DX2 & 5D4 all shoot 4K 8-bit 4:2:2 internal. probably the best thing too about that MJPEG codec. EOS R is 8-bit 4:2:0 internal / 10-bit 4:2:2 external. -

highlight roll off is poor on most sony cams imo and let's not even talk skin tones or overall color science.. it's what sony tried to fix on FS5 mk2. as for broadcast standards let's not forget they are still 720p/1080i. so the 4k crop isn't even a concern for that. shoot externally on a C200/EOS R and you've got your ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2. internally only Canon & Panasonic (and soon Fuji) offer high bitrate ALL-I codecs inside their MILCs which is also nice, especially when shooting water etc. motion artifacts will get your footage rejected by broadcast QC. Sony seem to be the only ones keeping their ALL-I (XAVC-I) codec for their FS7 and 10-bit options for FS5/FS7. If anything, i'd say Sony are the ones crippling their MILCs.. -
top display does show camera mode icon when camera is off. you can check it out in the above video at 1:00.

Yes i think Canon's strategy is definitely to present EOS R as an add-on product to your C100/200/300 as well as 5D3/5D4 for still shooters. I know that is how I'm planning to use mine

I believe in yet another theory.. that Canon was indeed in a rush to put out an MILC system around Photokina this year but simply wasn't ready as far as tech is concerned to put out a new sensor, or develop a stable IBIS system. So they did their best with existing tech and this is what came out.. I actually think Canon have learned from Sony though, and haven't held back so much in features like they used to .. Nobody was expecting EOS R to have C-Log, 10-bit 4:2:2 out, 480mbps ALL-I codec, Face detect, peaking etc.. for $2300. They even added MF Focus guides from C200 and Cinema EOS original color matrix option to match footage with C100/C300. I believe Canon's objective is to make EOS R an add-on system to your existing C line cam & DSLR. That is how they've been presenting it during launch and that's quite a logical & smart business strategy imo. Of course they are not pushing the barrier very far like the competition is, and in many ways EOS R is super dated feature wise. I do applaud them for the inital pro lens line-up and the Vari-ND adapter, that's kind of a game changer. -
Nice to see they included Cinema EOS Original color matrix option in C Log menu for easy matching with C100/C300.

Video oriented hands-on: Footage doesn't look too bad for a F4 lens in those lighting conditions. Pretty stable next-gen body/lens IS com. Dual Pixel AF better than C200 apparantly..
-
Yeah but an APS-C camera can't go FF.. as for sports shooting, not sure EOS R would be a good choice to begin with for that anyways with the slow burst rate.
-
2K FF Raw + DPAF would be dope! who knows maybe they can even get rid of the 4K crop by pixel binning or something.. those dudes are magicians.
-
Photo mode recognizes your EF-S lenses and automatically crops so you won't really notice a difference when switching between video & stills with APS-C glass. As for using stills & 4k video with FF glass at an event, it really isn't that hard even if you absolutely need similar FoV, just either step a few feet backwards, pull back on your zoom lens... or change lenses (that is what an ILC is for!). Finally there is also a 8MP still grab feature from the 4K feed if necessary.
-
Agreed. Furthermore Canon is claiming similar characteristics to my all time favorite 35mm F1.4 L: The new RF35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM has remarkably similar MTF characteristics to those of the excellent EF35mm f/1.4L lens. But it is a more compact and lightweight lens and has a macro shooting capability at f/1.8 brightness that cannot be matched by any EF lens. The control algorithm of the new optical IS augments the Dual Sensing IS of the EOS R lens-camera system, providing high image stability in macro photography using up to 5 stops shutter speed. Can we all just have a big f***ing laugh about this...
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Why on earth would i get a $2300 M43 GH5S with wack ass AF + $600 EF speedbooster.. as a HYBRID camera replacement?!! I am currently using FF EF glass on a 5D and C100. XT2 with adapted glass and a 1.7x crop when i need 4K. The EOS R could potentially replace... all three! Eye AF, DPAF + MF Focus Guide, 10-bit 4:2:2, Vari NDs, Canon colors etc. Call me an "apologist" but those tick my boxes and i invest in glass for the long run. Bodies will get better.. Sorry but I gotta roll with this dude on the Canon hate train: -

What about the 58mm f0.95 from Nikon rumoured at $4-6K? where are the LOLZ about that one? Lack of affordable primes? Canon has a 35mm f1.8 with IS & Macro for $499. That's $350 cheaper than Nikon's 35mm f1.8 for Z series. Now I get the disappointment over the 4K crop. It's massive, amounts to no standard, it's just plain annoying. The workaround for FF (and yes there shouldn't be one) is to shoot FHD. 4K for close-up shots. I feel like one of those EF adapters should have been a focal reducer and/or that the new lens line-up should have included a fast ultra-wide angle. -
Only workaround is simply to shoot 1080p. FF stills & video. Obviously not the camera for FF 4K. That boat sailed (or should i say sunk) about 20 hours ago!
-
I guess you were shooting 1080p because XH1 has a 4K crop. In fact it's almost the exact same crop (1.7x). It's less noticeable with native lenses cuz they're made for APS-C but it wouldn't be the ideal candidate for that type of job, again unless you're shooting 1080p in which case the EOS R would also not give you a crop in between stills/video.

Oh i agree with you.. most of these YT "reviews" shouldn't at all be called "reviews". Some have the decency of calling it a preview or hands-on. Of course the companies doing these big group launch events are counting on the press to make simultanuous buzz over their secret product reveal to echo the hype. Pretty sure Apple invented or at least mastered the art of what is known as the keynote event, with a big stage introduction & then quick hands-on for attendees. So again nothing really new here.. and then you got the "teasers" and the "leaks" which have internet forums going crazy over wild speculation (of course we're all victims here of it). At least Canon didn't do the whole countdown thing with endless teaser vids. what a relief.
-
That is a good point.. but what are these youtube/blog guys supposed to do then? refuse invites to gear they cover? Set limits to what's acceptable? Or start a strike towards ambitious out of town launch events? Serious question. I know some of these guys have said (i think it was Tony & Chelsea) they've been banned from product launches from certain companies they've critiqued in the past. If true now that's seriously messed up. But I don't think any of these guys are on a payola system or anything, even though they get called shills all the time by various angry fanboys. They get flown around for PR events, does that pump them up a bit? maybe, didn't seem the case today here again. Are they losing their independance? Perhaps, if they're bad journalists/reviewers. In the end, a lot of it is subjective opinion by mainly photographers that know little about video, and if anything i've found critiquing gear (extensively) seems to be the trend. Maybe it generates more clicks i dunno. I try and weed out the crap and form my own opinion anyways.

I knew all hell was gonna break lose today and everybody is entitled their opinions but calling people morons for being interested in purchasing this camera, or calling it a rip-off is just wrong & uncalled for. People have the right to be interested in this camera and nobody is forcing them to buy it. We all have different needs & backgrounds. So let's just all settlle down shall we? Canon hinted at 2 other bodies coming. My guess is they're IBIS & next-gen sensor tech is still in R&D but they wanted to respond quickly to Nikon and this is what came out of it. This is their first effort, not the end all be all. I was expecting far worst actually, and at a higher price. Not trying to make excuses either, the severe 4k crop blows as is the HFR & lack of IBIS. They did make up for it in other parts (Eye AF, DPAF + Focus guide MF, 10-bit out, Control ring, VariND adapter etc) and the lens line-up is pretty impressive. Nikon have I feel a much better rounded product with no major flaws, but it kinda lacks in flavor / fun-factor, especially the lenses. Feels like a more rugged industrial Sony clone. Can't say i find myself terribly excited about it even though i know it's the superior tool. As always I'll reserve final judgement until I try these out in person but the jury is still out as far as i'm concerned, the lens system being the real tipping point for me.

Are yall really this naive? This has been going on for decades, if not centuries. I worked at a tech press agency in the early 00's and we got invited all over europe for product releases.. Sony, Nokia, Apple.. Open bars, buffets, gift bags...etc.. The first iPod, we all got to take one home.. I get this may shock people, and I can't say i condone such practices but like it or not it's pretty standard within the industry. I also don't get why Canon is being singled-out here. Nikon flew the same guys out to NYC 2 weeks ago, gave them helicopter tours. Sony flew them to Las Vegas for A73 launch, had them on dune buggies etc.. i didn't hear any outrage over that and the outcoming reviews. Finally i didn't find DPreview or Jared Polins after-launch videos to be in any way apologetic towards the product? If anything they all seemed very jet-lagged & tired out, so maybe Hawai wasn't even that brilliant of an idea. Just my $0.2
-
Yeah I'm hoping there will be an RF to EF adapter as indeed i'd be weary of spending $2-3K on a lens system with a single body. would be great if RF glass were backwards compatible so I could also use them on my C100, 5D etc.. would be interesting to know if that's possible. Same goes for Nikon S series glass obviously
-
Yeah this is an awesome feature for focus pulls, never thought i'd see it outside of Canon's C line.
-
Yeah it's not like cinema cameras aren't just sitting still, as MILCS start catching up, they surely will jumpleap to 8K, internal Raw, etc. Also FS7 has got a lot more going on than 10-bit 4K. It records proper DCI 4K in ALL-I codec at bitrates up to 600mbps. You can get raw output, internal ProRes etc with expansions. That's without even counting ergonomics, battery life, XLR, DCI, NDs etc.. it's still a very popular camera option and top moving unit at rental houses.

@no_connection no i don't expect hollywood to be using the EOS R, my point however was that 10-bit 4:2:2 Log has it's relevance, on a tripod, on a gimbal, maybe even handheld with IS. I'll probably mainly be using it in 1080p so the crop/RS isn't even an issue.. @Shield3 that's a common misconception.. the amount of light is the same. try it yourself by switching from FF to APS-C if your camera has that function, the image doesn't get darker.. same if you crop a photo, doesn't change the lighting. plenty of videos explaining this, i like this one with the light meter analogy: https://youtu.be/VeQPtk7icjo
-
@no_connection Most hollywood productions are locked tripod shots with a S35 crop. I think 10-bit 4:2:2 Log will be very useful in a handful of "static" situations. @Shield3 Yeah i already aknowledged that.. was only half serious with that comment anyways but since we're getting technical it should be reminded that although DoF increases while cropping, an F1.2 or F2 remains the same as far as light gathering is concerned.. so no stops are lost.

I hate bad RS but not everyone is doing whip pans & fast action shots. It'll be more then usable for corporate interviews, product shots, tripod work etc. Lack of 120fps @ 1080p is inexcusable however.
