  1. With the spreading use of gimbals and IBIS, good AF-C has become important. Dual pixel AF is the benchmark.. to put it simply, it can put pro focus pullers to shame! The importance of strong AF-C is even more important on Fuji cams as manual focusing is kind of dodgy with focus by wire lenses. Actually I'd say this is Fuji's biggest setback for video imo.. I actually like performing a good manual rack focus and it's very hard to pull off (no pun intended) with focus by wire even with the best linear focus prime lenses. So AF-C has to be great, ideally, flawless (a la Canon's DPAF).. nobody wants "OK AF-C" for video.. the slightest hunt or misfocus and your shot is ruined. So it's like get it right or leave it out. XT2 with the latest AF-C update was really good. it remains to be seen if XH1 can match it at DR100.. As for the IQ.. the 200mbps codec really seems to make the image hold up better in post than the previous XT2 (100mbps) codec. This is especially true for FLOG where XT2 struggled a bit. Image here is very solid with low noise/macroblocking. There also have been comp tests which confirm this compared to Sony 100mbps XAVC.. Eterna is also a breeze to grade as stated above. Solid AWB & overall color science is definitely Fuji's nicest asset IQ wise. It really shines in mixed light conditions where most other camera brands struggle/fail, while Fuji's seem to nail it every time. This is incredibly time-saving in post workflow..
  2. The 5DIV crop factor is closer to APS-C then it is to M43. Also some of us still shoot in 1080p and the 5DIV does FF FHD. Furthermore as a hybrid camera, the 5DIV destroys any Panny camera for stills. Finally dual pixel AF works for 4K and is a valuable asset. I realize I'm the only person in the community 'defending' this camera but i honestly think it's a bit under-rated despite it's exuberant pricing and shortcomings..
  3. it's not just the lack of mirror.. sony e-mount has such short flange, it easily exposes the sensor to exterior elements. our A7iii hasn't been in for a week and it's already been sent for sensor cleaning lol..
  4. We have an A7III at the office, terribly underwhelmed by it.. aside from the slight body changes, it feels like the same old Sony experience.. emperor's new clothes imo. The EVF hasn't evolved since the II series, same 100mb XAVC-S codec, it's got an AA filter. LCD is a cluttered mess, convoluted menus with no touch support nor gestures. Yellow cast on every mixed lighting shot requiring fixing in post. Cherry on top is is our unit has the bottom blinking pixel issue others have reported. So much for Sony QC! Hence my vote goes to XT2/XH1. For stills, the X-Trans sensor, color science, film simulations & classic dedicated dials/ring control take the lead. For video, the 4K just has some SOOC mojo just like the JPEG engine. XH1: The body/grip enhancements feel great. The new soft shutter & excellent IBIS allow new levels of low shutter speed shots. DCI 4K. 200mbs codec feels solid in post. Eterna is a joy & needs minimum grade. . Top sub-monitor display. Customizable gesture support. Silent movie mode (bypasses aperture ring, dials etc).
  5. Plenty of reasons to pick a 5D4 over a A73 : native Canon lens support, superior colors/ skintones , 30MP sensor, DCI 4K, 422 intra high bitrate codec, dual pixel autofocus, better weather sealing, built-in timelapse , excellent ergonomics, touchscreen menus & gestures etc.. Highly doubt Canon sales/prices will be affected much by this. The 5D3 hardly saw a price drop when the A7 could be bought for $900. They address different markets. To be honest i don't understand the hype over this camera.. we have one at the office (boss is a sony fan) and i can hardly notice any IQ difference with the previous A7R/S II series. A lot of the same issues though (and some new ones too!). I guess the pricing is what makes it so tempting, flagship Sonys costing almost double. edit: i can confirm we have the bottom pixel blinking issue on our unit!
  6. in other news, Fuji finally released a FF camera.. via firmware update: https://www.fujirumors.com/fujifilm-gfx-50s-firmware-update-ver-3-00-released/ #kaizen#ftw
  7. have you even watched the videos i linked? the 1 million subscribers actually gets mentioned/explained too.. i don't want to make a parallel with politics but number of voters/subscribers doesn't necessarily translate to the speaker saying the truth or that his word should be 'taken as gospel' either..
  8. Sorry but Tony Northrup is a sell-out and has been called out for his once again ridiculous claims.. the other Vegas youtubers have also been called out for flat out lies: don't believe the hype!
  9. Panasonic are on their 6th GH release that they've been working on improving for the past 10 years. It's a video-oriented product & they also have a pro video department to work with.. Fujifilm is a stills oriented camera maker with X-H1 being their second serious attempt at video on a hybrid camera. They're essentially newbies to the playing-field. Personally, i think they've done remarkably well considering this context and they are known to not abandon their cameras which is always reassuring (indeed what other company adds 4k to a camera 2 years down the line... and for free?!). That being said if you want to stay on the safe side, it's always good to wait until a company irons out bugs before jumping on first or second gen products.
  10. Co-sign here as well on the A7 III. i've actually spent some time on a unit at a local preview event.. and was so severely underwhelmed by it. The menu is just a total nightmare to navigate. Endless side-scrolling. Doesn't help the touchscreen doesn't work in menu navigation. Actually the touchscreen functionality is sort of a joke.. you can't even pinch zoom on playback.. virtually no gestures. Just touch focus and double tap. The EVF hasn't evolved since the II series, same aging 100mb XAVC-S codec, it's got an OLPF. I wasn't even that impressed with the new AF system, couldn't get eye AF to work in video either (although could be user error). I tried the XH1 an hour later for the 1st time and felt immediately at home (ergonomically & functionally) was instantly reminded why i love Fuji and dislike Sony. Keep in mind this is without even going into color science, or IQ...etc just shooting experience, design philosophy & handling. PS: no horse in the race either as i don't own a Fuji atm (my XT2 & primes was just stolen during holiday in Morroco )
  11. @jonpais can you be more specific? what makes you believe Fuji won't address the AF-C issue on XH1 firmware update 1.10? for all we know it's a simple fix..
  12. 8 months? Fuji are pretty responsive imo: - XT2 was released Sep.8 2016 - First XT2 update was announced Oct.31 2016 and was released Nov.29 2016: http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n161031_02.html No company is immune to bugs/firmware updates these days.. and early adopters are (unfortunately) prone to dealing with them. Let's not play the blame game. Buyers of gear need to inform themselves before purchase and make their own decisions. Personally, i don't think shooting at DR100 is that big an issue. Might even go forward with my XH1 purchase now that the bug is identified..
  13. Sony isn't immune to bugs... https://www.eoshd.com/2016/01/sony-fs5-codec-problems-and-4k-ripped-edges-bug/ ..and firmware fixes: https://nofilmschool.com/2016/02/sony-firmware-v1-1-1-fs5-xavc-codec-image-issue Some could also argue they still haven't fixed their color science
  14. DR100 uses straight sensor processing whereas DR200/400 use off-sensor processor trickery to get that extra DR. My guess is Fuji hasn't compensated for the extra DR settings in video mode (which weren't available on XT2) hence AF struggles at DR200/400 because of this. Surely a firmware update will fix this, in the meantime DR100 seems the only option for AF-C.. annoying but at least looks like we got an explanation for the inconsistent AF reports. someone should shoot this up to Fuji HQ..
  15. Of course if you own a vast Canon L glass collection or Nikkors, then there is a good chance you are going to stick with Canikon but that argument isn't definitive. Sony offer "fast native glass" for their FF bodies.. and smart adapters exist, yet a lot of pros remain on DSLR's or even switch back to them after being disappointed with mirrorless experience. Poor ergonomics, battery life, weather sealing, blackout times, weak EVFs (vs OVFs), weak AF, lack of native speedlights etc.. so many reasons why pros still cling on to DSLRs. Sony have been tackling some of these issues through their third generation FF MILCs... but how many years will it take Canikon to get there when they finally do decide to step into the game? As for your final point of "looking the part" for clients, yes there is some truth to that although i personally don't worry about it any more, i let the results do the speaking and i feel most creative on MILCs wether for stills or video.. that being said DSLRs aren't going anywhere just yet and still provide strong advantages for certain requirements. So in the end i'd say it is MILC bodies that still have some work to do if they are to seriously compete with DSLRs/Cine cams. I wanna see more rugged bodies with hybrid EVF/OVFs, and better flash support for stills and 10-bit, Raw, Dual-pixel level AF, electronic ND's for video. It'll take a couple more years/body generations for that though i suspect..
  16. i think I'll be repurchasing one sooner later. Nicest 1080p of all non-raw cams imo. Great ergonomics. DPAF. Fantastic assist tools & tiny files..
  17. Dunkirk Camera: IMAX MKIV, IMAX MSM 9802, Panavision 65 HR, Panavision Panaflex System 65 Studio Recording Format: 65mm (Kodak Vision3 50D 5203, Vision3 250D 5207, Vision3 200T 5213, Vision3 500T 5219) ?
  18. I had a quick go at the camera yesterday during a preview event. The menus are convoluted as ever with a zillion tabs to side scroll through (hadn't touched a sony in a minute) and i couldn't even figure out how to activate touch screen functionality for some stupid reason. That said image quality was perhaps best i've seen from a sony (once you've set WB, color settings etc). Love that you can switch from FF to S35 with no visible IQ loss. Still will probably go with XH1 for DCI 4K @ 200mbps, ergonomics & color science.
  19. These stats don't mean much to me, I'm based in Europe and am only talking about the scene I'm familiar with which happens to be (high) fashion: a $2.4 trillion industry ranked world's seventh largest economy. So what if 'glamorous females earning big bucks' only represent perhaps a tiny percent of pro photographers. it's a tier that matters and appeals to camera brands, similarly to what @BTM_Pix was saying about the importance of (camera) brand exposure at major sporting events. There is a reason why there is always a promo with fashion photographers during releases of pro cameras. And then there is the trickle-down effect, the amateur/enthusiast who wants to be associated with the camera brand/model used by pros. it's a vertical top-bottom business model where upper-class influences the lower. It's like Fender make their money off non-domestic guitar sales because average Joe musician wants to copy his favorite rock idol, even though he can't afford a $4K custom made in USA. But Fender would be dead if they didn't make pro models for pro musicians.. as pros would jump to another guitar maker and so would Joe. Same thing in Fashion.. ateliers spend months on a runway show displaying dresses only a happy few in the world can afford. in reality, dresses end up being rented by Hollywood actor stylists to be worn during red carpet events. All of this so your mother, sister, wife/gf can go buy $50 Dior/Prada/YSL perfume at the local beauty store. Cosmetics being the main department making revenue for these big fashion houses (sunglasses & accessories then follow).. So if we were to follow your logic, why should Fender make $4K guitars? pro guitarists are only 5% of musicians, and most pro guitarists are struggling to make a buck at a dive bar? Why should fashion houses focus so much time & energy on runway shows only 0.1% of the population can afford? 90% actors are underpaid/unemployed..? But see you have to understand trickle-down economics/theory & brand exposure impact before scratching your head at what so & so brand do and pulling arbitrary/irrelevant stats from the consumer end.
  20. lovely but what a workflow.. hopefully FS5 mk2 will do all that internally!
  21. i know quite a few female fotogs and fwiw they're all on Canikon DSLRs. In the fashion street photography scene (big industry here in Paris) it's almost all Canon 5Ds / 1DXs. requirements are battery life, weather sealing & SOOC skin tones. Weather sealing because sometimes you're out on the street for hours shooting during downpour, SOOC skin tones because it's a race to get pics online and subjects must look good. Sony have improved battery life & ergonomics but weather sealing, color science & menus are still poor. IMO they mostly cater to enthusiasts, semi-pros & general fields. few examples: ..and no these aren't posers but actual pros who earn up to $5K-$10K during each fashion week (which if they travel is 12 events per year). so much for the poor old fat second-class citizen comment..
  22. They're not getting away with it. Several videos and discussions about it. Fuji definitely F'ed up. H1 is sold as having superior AF. A firmware fix is bound to come quickly (or sales are going to hurt). I know I'm not be buying one until this is fixed.
