there's been some speculation that the next D6xx would basically be D750, and that the next D7xx would have a more pro body (a la D700). I think it's very safe to assume the next FX cams will all have 4K as the D5/500 released this year implement it. Hopefully they add peaking and more robust codec options but somehow Nikon R&D seem slow to push forward in video department.
-
Nikon are slowly getting there... D5/D500 both released this year have 4K / Flat profile. D750 also introduced zebras. All that's really missing is peaking and stronger codec options.. the DR though is impressive for 8-bit DSLR.. But speaking of motion cadence, I really hated it on the D750. Lots of juddering on pans too (as with 5D3). Black Magic Raw/Prores, excellent motion. Strangely enough, I'm ok with my C100 's motion cadence even though it uses a shitty 24 mbps AVCHD codec. It has it's flaws but motion cadence i find is really good. Really don't know how they did it. So still kind of a mystery to me what science gives good/bad motion cadence..

I'm not that familiar with MJPEG but the more i research it, it kind of sounds like it's RAW video concept except uses JPEGs instead of RAW files..? Could it be MJPEG is the compromise Canon found of getting you closer to Raw video capabilities which is what everybody's been nagging them to do ever since ML appeared? I must admit 1DX II 4K footage does look fantastic and from reports resolves quite well in post. But the workflow with the big files to transcode oh my.. i guess those used to ML Raw will find it a walk in the park.. but those used to fast drag n drop n edit and small files are going to be taken back.. It's just kind of strange the options are you either get 4K 500mbps MJPEG or 1080p H264. No other codec options in between. Even that would be ok if they at least allowed 4K HDMI out so you could record 4K ProRes etc to external recorder.. But i guess i'm expecting too much in this department.. It's Canon.. not Panasonic.. you're given one or two codec options at most to deal with.. at least there is a high quality low compression format option. On the stills side, the new Dual Pixel RAW editing info definitely seems interesting if not game changing as far as post capabilities..

have a look here, full on 5D4 FAQ and claim it's his next purchase alongside kit we very well know he can't afford: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30545.msg615042#msg615042 gotta love the first posters reaction: "Do you work for Canon?" lol Reminds me a lot of this post where ES reveals to us 1DX II info given to him by his "secret Canon contact" who'd just lifted the NDA: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/19104-canon-1dx-ii-video-camera-perspective-mini-interview-on-the-missing-details/ Even Andrew had made a blog about it: http://www.eoshd.com/2016/02/all-is-revealed-canon-1d-x-mark-ii-video-faq/ If you are reading this ES (and good chance he is) please stop spreading BS!

indeed it's why i said YMMV depending on your shooting scenario. personally ergonomics is a must. but the real deal breaker for me is the horrendous rolling shutter, never seen something so bad in a camera tbh! that's because A7S does full pixel readout and 5D3 bins.. but 5D3 resolution is still 1080p even if softer then A7S etc.. C100 for example downscales 1080p from a 4K sensor.. result is it's a lot sharper then 5D3, which is why C100 is my A-Cam but still I can match up 5D3 pretty close in post. it's not that big of a deal imo.. that being said it's definitely a shame if the 5D4 still bins at 1080p and gives out a softer image..
-
^ i suggest you read the other thread i linked.. SMH 5D3 does 1080p. it betters the A6300 in that it's native full frame, has audio output, much much much less rolling shutter, no overheat issues, longer battery life, slightly bigger screen/resolution, axis display and overall better ergonomics, especially if you're shooting manual. of course YMMV. different types of shooters may have different types of priorities.. and you said it yourself a6300 isn't for run & gun..
-
looks like you missed this thread he started today: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30545.msg615042#msg615042 i love how it ends with: My next video rig is probably going to be the 5D IV + Zucoto LCD loup + Rode mic + new 24-105mm F4/L. ..right, just after you finish scamming half the forum there... kid is still living in fantasy world spreading false knowledge.. i'd call him out but no time for it really..

lol quite obviously. we are talking top bill FF DSLR versus a consumer pocket camera without even a viewfinder. I'd never consider a A6300 over my 5D3 or even a 6D. Too many compromises on usage but fact remains that sony gives access to full readout APS-C 4K, zebra/peaking & S-Log3 for $1K. Add a speedbooster and it's FF 4K! And of course native FF 4K with clean 4K HDMI output, EVF, SLOG, IBIS etc.. for $3K on the A7S2. Sony offers all this, even though they also have a pricey FS cinema cam line. So my point is simply that Canon could include a few of these goodies on their 3.800 euro flagship 5D4. But no dice. Also, sorry for beating a dead horse here but 1.7x crop is just a real bummer. I buy a Full Frame for a Full Frame look/experience. It becomes even more important with 4K where you'd like the possibility of a jump-in crop in full HD timeline. Well now on the 5D4, my 35mm 1.4 L becomes a 60mm native in 4K.. and my widest 24mm L becomes a 40mm.. that just makes me cringe..
-
I'm not too worried about Canon sales yet I'm not entirely sure about it having the same reception as the 5D3.. when the 5D3 was released 4 years ago there wasn't much like it in FF world, allowing it to reach it's epic status as perfect pro all-rounder in stills photography and with great video options. Today that's a whole different story, Nikon & Sony have caught up and leap-frogged Canon. A quick look at DxOMark ( http://www.dxomark.com/cameras#hideAdvancedOptions=false&viewMode=list&yDataType=rankDxo ) and you'll find the Top 20 cameras of the moment are all Nikon/Sony (and two PhaseOne's) 1DX II ranks 21st, 5DS 27th.. and 5D3 52nd position! Of course in the real world the 5D3 is still found everywhere in pro bags but that's just more about photogs not upgrading/switching brands because technically speaking it is very outdated (not surprising for a 2012 camera) and not to mention pros are only a segment of the overall market. Now indeed specs don't mean everything, and I am saying this as a primarily stills shooter who just bought a 5D3 last month! I did so though because it made sense lens wise to be in Canon ecosystem as I also own a C100. But coming from the D750 (which has it's flaws) and going back to the 5D3 feels like quite a leap backwards in terms of sensor / IQ. Now I'm expecting a vast improvement in the 5D4 sensor, especially concerning DR but that still remains to be shown. Also video has become of huge importance in the photography market, especially prosumers. they want great FF 4K video. it's the trendy thing. I know a lot are going to be surprised, bummed out by the crop.. in an age when even an iPhone can switch from stills to 4K video without cropping. Then finally, disregarding totally still shooters and prosumers, you've got the pro video community which is what most of us here are about. In this particular segment, who may be smaller in terms of sales.. is pretty important as far as image/presence in the pro field (something Canon does place value in i think). Although it's too early to tell, what we know for sure is that there has been a shift from the 5D3 being the king 3-4 years ago.. to a much larger range of equipment being used today that includes GH4, BlackMagic, Nikon and of course Sony. I'm just kind of amazed Canon doesn't seem to take much of the video markets evolution into consideration with the 5D4. When a $1K A6300 can do full readout 4K with a lesser crop, include zebra/peaking, S-Log3 & 425 phase AF points.. well the 5D4 at a whopping 3800 euros just doesn't seem that impressive. Now ok, well aware of the A6300 rolling shutter, overheat issues, battery life, color science etc... but still Canon could have definitely add a few extras (just a few lines of code indeed) to really come out with the king DSLR. But they want to protect at all costs the C line, even if it means some people (maybe even a lot) not interested in C line will go elsewhere.. It's even scarier when you think that the 5D4 will probably be it for the next 4 years..
-
The more i think about these specs the less excited I am.. 1.7x crop would be pretty bad, especially at 3800 euros.. having to transcode a 500mbps outdated codec also sounds like a PITA... no log or focus assist.. no 4K output.. pixel-binned 1080p.. really DPAF is the only good news here. I'll reserve my judgement until final specs are released but it ain't looking pretty..
-
Yeah it's a bit hard for me to go back to the 5D3 on the stills side after being spoiled by the D750's DR.. but ultimately L glass is what brought me back to Canon. I also think Nikon have ways to go on the video side. Now the 5D4 definitely has some sweet features for video. Crop factor on 4K means Super35 mode which isn't that bad. Internal 422 is a nice surprise (even if still 8-bit). DPAF implementation seems the bomb. It's been a game changer for me on the C100 and this takes it further. I'd almost be tempted to drop the C100 but probably no zebra, peaking, waveform or C-log.. So i'm still hesitant what my next camera will be 5D4 or a Sony (A7S2, FS5 or A9). Can't wait for official 5D4 footage.. probably next week upon release!

ES declared what was it 10 days ago he would never contribute to this site again because he knew his credibility was tainted.. then yesterday i see him post all kinds of bogus advice in threads. And now today he's whining no one locked his account so he took that as a free pass to continue his BS activities. Kid even has nerve to say "it's your fault" "don't get a seizure about me helping people".. I'm glad mods are finally taking a stance towards this punks behavior. I understand the are leaving his account open until situation gets resolved but really it should be restricted and his signature modified ASAP with a warning of his fraudulent activities. It's like giving a sex offender a slap on the wrist. You know it's a matter of time before dude commits crime again.. Seriously, the leniency given here is starting to give this site a bad look I'm afraid.. where is Andrew btw? he needs to step up & address this imo..

of course the whole mother shipping thing reaks BS.. another long winded post with all kinds of false planted details and all the pics added again for blurring/confusion.. typical scam tactic @Ed_David: i have no reason to doubt you have alexa/red/film experience, but then again you're probably not a 21 year old kid from egypt with a Rebel T3 posing as a Media Empire / PhD Radiologist giving bad advice and scamming people thanks to a well built reputation and high ranking account. Yeah some people here are a little naive or don't do their homework and take hefty investment advice from strangers on a tech forum, but do realise not everyone is perhaps in your position pal. some people (maybe even majority?) are from different parts of the world. not every country/region has access to those types of rental shops. anyways i agree with your message but let's not get it wrong, no one here deserves to get scammed or purposely misinformed by this punk. fault is certainly not on them. i vote perm ban.

Except the problem goes much deeper then this petty scam.. see the bigger problem is this kid has been compulsively lying to everybody in just about every forum post for the past 3 years. He's given false advice to possibly hundreds if not thousands of people (if you include lurkers). That type of behaviour is pretty unforgivable, he may have led people to loose thousands in wrong gear investment choices. The kid is an extensive compulsive liar and for that alone he certainly shouldn't be given a free pass to further contributions. The worst part is he is very convincing with his arguments which are often well thought and informed (he probably spends all his free time watching and comparing camera gear footage, reviews, vlogs and knows a thing or two about film stock thanks to grading with film emulations etc) and he enhances his conviction with casual mention of his decade spanning career in high budget film/TV/production work, name dropping Alexas, film stock and all kinds of bogus info to add credibility... Let me just illustrate you this with one example, a single post by ES with his Saadawi Senior Media empire CEO / hospital ER physician/ Senior PhD Radiologist hat on, giving advice to a hesitant C100 buyer :

lol gotta admit some of these conspiracies are entertaining.. y'all got vivid minds.. i admit his whole IG account seems fake.. random pics with hashtags and conveniently placed pics of the lenses he's used to bait scam.. we know he's stolen footage before.. then again that account goes 3 years deep.. so wtf.. could this really just be some poor egyptian low-life kid with daddy issues.. that invented himself a fantasy mentor and pedigree (notice how on here he would always bring up his 20 years in the motion industry etc) just out of some kind of inferiority complex.. and that one day he just decided to turn on the community and pull a hustle in order to upgrade from his shitty rebel T3 ?!

wow.. i could tell this kid had mental issues but that is some next level borderline sociopath character traits.. talk about self analysis lol.. this whole case is definitely odd.. being an active member on a forum for years, then a quick meltdown with scamming, gloating, ridiculous cover up.. and admission of guilt.. definitely not your ordinary scammer.. did this kid really think he'd get away with this.. or is it one big self-destructive path? i mean we've all been young and done dumb things but this really takes the cake.. theft in the middle east is no petty crime either so i'm really stunned by such foolishness .. really this can only be explained by severe mental disorder which really is quite sad, especially since there seems to be an intelligent side to him considering some of his contributions. but i wouldn't take pity on him either. he lied to you guys for years.. scammed people, gloated about it.. and we don't even know yet the exact magnitude of it.. i still think he's just trolling for attention and this thread is like his biggest accomplishment..
-
.. just caught up with the entire thread.. here are my thoughts having the whole thing fresh into perspective: "ES" is a troll. He's a narcissistic kid with borderline multiple personality syndrome. as someone else pointed this isn't too surprising or even uncommon in the film making realm (having multiple characters, drama, plot twists, improvisation). "ES" at some point even said something like "gotta admit this would make a good film script". well except not. i knew from post #1 the "grandson" did it (actually that was OP's assertion as well). "ES" probably got a huge kick at the people lynching him but also defending him.. hence the troll. FWIW i always knew from day one here this character was fishy. as other also noticed, his signature. the whole 19-year old noob & wise old grandpa under the same account screamed bi-polar syndrome. maybe this guy forgot to take his meds hence the meltdown. and i say this because the oddest thing is that from the little i've interacted with "ES" he does seem to really know his shit concerning a thing or two (usually evolving around Canon EOS cams). That being said the obsession with the 1DC and long winded monologues about filmic properties always appeared quite odd from a mental state. If i were to guess, this guy is neither 19 or 80.. probably somewhere in between. Oh and guys, do not believe a word he's said in this thread, including the heartfelt confession. it's all an act IMO. the guy is a compulsive liar. there is no grandpa and definitely no prego sister. what is real though is the scam, and I really hope the people affected will get compensated. I would definitely report this to police authorities. And one more thing, having been to Africa and having actually dealt with Western Union there, i can confirm it's quite shady. Basically operated by your corner store owner. In between corruption, prominence of fake IDs, lack of enforcement etc.. it's no wonder why these types of "419 scams" thrive in that region... i mean if this guy really used his real name to scam all those people then he really is the dumbest kid on earth lol..
-
it's a pretty well known fact that the 4K on the FS5 is soft & that the 4K on NX1 is overtly sharp. ironically people have been complaining about both these "issues"!
-
Being familiar with all the cameras discussed above I do agree with Ebrahim's assessment about them. That being said I still think which one you prefer or is right for you is totally subjective so not sure I agree with the conclusion. It is clear Ebrahim is passionate about filmic camera properties (not just from reading the above but the 1DX2 vs 1DC thread etc) and that's fine. But outside of these specialised forum niches, people might reach different conclusions. I'm sure to many (including Canon) the C100 mk2 has better video quality then mk1. And same goes for recent Sony cams. The filmic vs cinematic / 4k video debate kinda reminds me of other digital vs analog or X vs Z debates I've seen in other specialised forums. In the end nobody is really right or wrong, just like you often hear there is no perfect camera generally speaking.. and with log profiles & grading become so accessible, the difference becomes kinda marginal aside from purists points of view. Sure Black Magic's & ARRI's etc are cinema oriented cams and hence more filmic.. and the Sony's are better suited to dazzle with super-slo mo action or 4K cinematic commercials & music videos but that doesn't mean they're oriented towards non film educated or non passionate business persons. That's a bit too black & white a statement in 2016 imo. A lot of people have multiple needs these days. They might have commercial work and do narrative/docu on the side, or the opposite. All kinds of combinations but not necessarily budget for multiple specialised cameras. This is where the FS5 imo is a good all rounder with 10-bit S-log3, 12-bit 4K RAW option, 14 stops of DR and LUTs, EVF, modular, compact, S35 E-mount...etc. Getting back to the C100 though.. imo it's biggest advantage today is price, ergonomics, c-log & DPAF. it's biggest con imo is 8-bit output and poor AVCHD codec. Grading limits aside, this could be a problem in areas that require higher output (like BBC 10-bit 422 standard).
-
-
lol.. the 18-35 is more like 5K.. but regardless that test is more about highlight rolloff from 12-bit raw and the 14 stops of DR then anamorphic properties and such..
-
Just have a look around vimeo.. i have a hard time finding footage that doesn't stand out! and with the 4K 12-bit raw option now available, the camera has just turned into an IQ beast:
-
This. I copped a C100 mk1 with DPAF upgrade secondhand last month for under $2K. I was actually saving up for an FS5 but couldn't pass on the deal. New I'd probably still go for the mk1 cuz indeed at $4K, we're approaching FS5 territory.. The mk1 EVF is terrible indeed but with a $40 C-cup it's usable. Not sure what you mean by FS5's "bad, buggy image", the firmware that came out 6 months ago fixed most of the noise problems (as documented by Andrew on this blog). The FS5 packs a lot of heat with 4K, 10-bit 422 1080p, usable S-Log3, 240fps & variable ND in a tight lightweight package. The IQ is great, but it's a Sony as far as colors (IQ is very similar to A7S2). It has a very "fresh" in-vogue looking image. C100 mk1 does have this filmic / classic docu look. I'm a fan of both looks, preference is kind of like picking between different film stocks..
-
Yup that was pretty much my thought process. would much rather have a no fuss C100 with excellent 1080p IQ, great assist features (love the waveform view), shutter angle/gain levels, ND filters, XLRs, C-LOG & Wide DR PPs and last but not least the game changing DPAF.. also keep in mind it doesn't do 4K but uses the same sensor as the C300 and is 4K down sampled to 1080 image. it's a lot sharper then the soft 5D3 and actually holds up ok in full screen on a 4K monitor. when the time comes in a year or so, there will be plenty of 4K options to upgrade to with perhaps not all the compromises of these early gen hybrid cams.. plus yeah it does look the biz and i don't have clients looking at me funny like when using most DSLRs/mirrorless cams heh!
-
Agreed.. something really weird about the motion. Will have to wait for real life tests to get a proper idea. Right now it's looking way too 'video'. Also am I the only one to find Fuji film simulations a bit over rated? Never been a fan of heavy baked in looks. It is an interesting concept, at least for still photography but the film simulations have nothing a proper LUT would give you imo. No IBIS, External F-log, Rolling shutter issues, limited/expensive native lens ... meh.. It sounds to me like Fuji is just jumping on the filmmaker bandwagon, but do they really have the chops? I guess it's still nice Sony finds itself a competitor.. Hopefully a real non-sponsored test will give the full breakdown, I certainly won't be the beta tester for yet another compromised new hybrid system.. hyped up solely on the premise of 4K and some "cool" retro picture profiles..
