1.74x - A Crop Odyssey - Canon 5D Mark IV officially announced
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ok Mattias, I've now watched the rest of it... He reads specs from Adorama off his smartphone. Praises the video aspect with no mention of crop factor or lack of C-log assist features etc.. Talks about how Canon gear just works.. Then plugs his video tutorials. What exactly am I missing here dude?? PS: i much prefer/value your very own concise & reflected 5 reasons why vids then this rushed mess.. -
1.74x - A Crop Odyssey - Canon 5D Mark IV officially announced
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Like i said i stopped the video after he gave number one reason "cuz it's a 5D". Sadly that's really all it will take for a bunch of people (pros & non-pros) to consider this camera. Canon knows this and is effortlessly banking on that, rather then really push the envelope or give power-users what they want.. Anyways it is what it is.. some people will like it others won't.. -
1.74x - A Crop Odyssey - Canon 5D Mark IV officially announced
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ok let's get this straight, I have zero qualms with X person stating his favorite camera in the world is X, Y or Z. We all have different needs, tastes etc.. My point is simply it's a little foolish and brash to make Best camera of the year claim before A. Having hands on experience with said camera, and B. The competition announces its products at the upcoming worlds largest photo fair. If anything this guy ironically fits the "but it's the 1D" character type.. That's all I'm saying.. -

None of that really validates the claim that 5D IV is Best Camera of the Year, although I didn't realize he was a stills shooter which really doesn't correlate much to the points being made here concerning video ( FWIW I wouldn't choose an A7R2 over a Canikon for my professional photography needs either ). If he's purely basing this on tech support though, I can tell you I got nightmare stories with Nikon Europe too (6 weeks to fix a brand new faulty D750 that had to await parts sent from China). No special VIP treatment for poor me though. Anyways as the guy states himself at the start of the vid, it's a bit silly making such claim ahead of Photokina. Speaking of Sony, here are the latest rumors concerning their upcoming Medium format, DSLR form factor A9 & A7 future: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/new-set-of-low-ranked-rumors-sony-a9-a9r/ It seems we can expect much higher build quality, form factor & weather sealing etc in their upcoming roster.. -

^ that's pretty funny mattias, but actually kind of counter argumentative. i don't know what that Youtuber's pedigree is and it probably is a lot more impressive then mine or most here yet I had to stop watching when the guy's number one reason for claiming the 5D IV is the most important announcement of 2016 is because... "well it's a 5D" ! honestly a little tired of all these VIP YT experts all rushing to brash conclusions (wether positive or negative) over a camera most haven't even handled yet (DPreview being the rare exception and remaining somewhat neutral presenting facts not opinions). it sounds more like a click race then actual insightful knowledge. 5D is surely the biggest announcement.. for the press.. that i will concede.. -

As if the crop factor wasn't bad enough news, here comes rolling shutter results... -

Do we know for sure the 1080p is pixel binned? if so how bad should we expect 1080P IQ? same as 5D3? -
For those in love with the FULL FRAME look which system gets closest in 4K?

A question for A7R II owners regarding new firmware and AF
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Curious about this as well.. Even before V3, A7R II had pretty impressive video PDAF (especially in fast setting): -
Great news if true about 422 10-bit but no 4K crop I find misleading given the crop nature of Micro 4/3. Sounds like a cheap shot towards the 5D IV..
-
^ Indeed which is why my current setup consists of a DPAF C100 & 5D3 (both of which cost me less total than a 5D4!) Of course that is exactly what Canon wants / forces you to do within their ecosystem. Needless to say though I'll be looking elsewhere for future upgrade path..

Photokina 2016 preview and summary of the year in video so far
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Although this may sound kinda revolutionary on paper, DPreviews early hands-on insists this will allow only very small micro adjustments. They make it sound like it's more a marketing gimmick then actual useful tool. Guess we'll have to wait for more conclusive tests/ information.. Touch screen Dual Pixel AF for video though is the main ticket and I think will be a feature the competition will need to start copying to stay ahead the game.. -

Photokina 2016 preview and summary of the year in video so far
Django replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I wouldn't write out Sony too fast.. the Japan earthquake that affected their sensor factory completely messed up their 2016 release schedule but A7 III series & A9 should be serious contenders.. -
The DR for stills on the D810 (14.8) & D750 (14.5) is quite phenomenal. That's more then Phase One's & Hasselblad's. It's really been hard for me to go back to the 5D3 after 6 months spent on D750. I could recover for days on D750. 5D3 at 11.7 stops is far far far behind. That 2012 sensor tech is old. Even the 6D has a better sensor.. Now how that translates to 8-bit 420 video is a different story, especially when you take ML Raw into consideration.
-
^ Nikon provides a flat profile on their latest cameras. Yeah 4K HDMI out is nice.. but there are other cons with Nikons.. no DCI 4K.. heavy crop.. strong rolling shutter.. etc As for Nikon & PDAF, Sony has got nothing to do with that. D5/D500 don't even use Sony sensors! Nikon just seems very content with their AF module system. Perhaps with Canon pushing the envelope with dual pixel, Nikon will react.. but for now Canon really seems to be ahead of everyone with their DPAF tech.
-
I agree, Nikon could but probably won't release that type of camera...yet.. They just seem to move in baby steps in the video dept.. even if they're headed in right direction. Best chance this year for FF full read out 4K with assist features, log & good AF is still from Sony.. A7S/R3 / A9. Native lens choice may be poor/expensive, but with adapters and speed boosters the lens choice becomes almost infinite if you don't mind MF / average AF.. Kinda makes up a bit for color science imo.. Ergonomics wise I'm still not ready to ditch DSLR for still photography (5D3 still king with it's button placements, customisation and AF point joystick control.. and with touch screen & DPAF will finally get Live View put to good use on 5D4) but for certain types of video needs like low-light events, i found the A7SII a joy to shoot through the EVF. But yeah, there is no perfect still/video camera in sight yet, always compromises it seems..

Forum members, I just thought I'd point out that this guy is the founder of a questionable Polish militia "boot camp" facility which trains French civilians to semi/automatic firearms & combat warfare (which is illegal here) around a clouded political agenda that seems to cover up under anti-terrorist legitimacy. He is here asking questions as no French videographers (to whom he referred to me in another thread in french as "hipster faggots") seem to want to be associated with his borderline propaganda activities . I'm all about freedom of speech, but I just thought you guys should know who you're helping out here.. not exactly your ordinary fellow videographer.. As for the A7S2, it's color science & S-log. I often here it berated here and it isn't the easiest cam to work with and S-log does require advanced grading skills .. but in the right hands I've seen some really superb work done on the S2 and it sure packs a lot of punch in such a small package (and price compared to the FS5).. and this is coming from a Canon guy!

I've tried the XC10 briefly, it definitely has a cheapo feel to it imo. Nowhere near Cxxx / L glass build quality. I also believe it's not aimed at the same market. I kinda doubt ENG shooters use it with that form factor and no EVF. It does have some neat features, some only available on high-end C line gear (422 4K, the codec, C-log etc) but I was really disappointed with the hardware, specifically the slow fixed non-constant aperture lens paired to tiny sensor, unusable manual focus ring... So for me it's kind of a flawed product, especially at such high price point. That being said i see how some shooters may enjoy it, especially as a B-cam for daylight action/drone shots. But I doubt Canon sold a lot, I know my local camera store has been trying to blow them out, unsuccesfuly. Small fixed lens cams are kind of a niche market anyways. All that being said XC15 might fair better if indeed they at the very least improve the lens and add DPAF.

there's been some speculation that the next D6xx would basically be D750, and that the next D7xx would have a more pro body (a la D700). I think it's very safe to assume the next FX cams will all have 4K as the D5/500 released this year implement it. Hopefully they add peaking and more robust codec options but somehow Nikon R&D seem slow to push forward in video department.
-
Nikon are slowly getting there... D5/D500 both released this year have 4K / Flat profile. D750 also introduced zebras. All that's really missing is peaking and stronger codec options.. the DR though is impressive for 8-bit DSLR.. But speaking of motion cadence, I really hated it on the D750. Lots of juddering on pans too (as with 5D3). Black Magic Raw/Prores, excellent motion. Strangely enough, I'm ok with my C100 's motion cadence even though it uses a shitty 24 mbps AVCHD codec. It has it's flaws but motion cadence i find is really good. Really don't know how they did it. So still kind of a mystery to me what science gives good/bad motion cadence..

I'm not that familiar with MJPEG but the more i research it, it kind of sounds like it's RAW video concept except uses JPEGs instead of RAW files..? Could it be MJPEG is the compromise Canon found of getting you closer to Raw video capabilities which is what everybody's been nagging them to do ever since ML appeared? I must admit 1DX II 4K footage does look fantastic and from reports resolves quite well in post. But the workflow with the big files to transcode oh my.. i guess those used to ML Raw will find it a walk in the park.. but those used to fast drag n drop n edit and small files are going to be taken back.. It's just kind of strange the options are you either get 4K 500mbps MJPEG or 1080p H264. No other codec options in between. Even that would be ok if they at least allowed 4K HDMI out so you could record 4K ProRes etc to external recorder.. But i guess i'm expecting too much in this department.. It's Canon.. not Panasonic.. you're given one or two codec options at most to deal with.. at least there is a high quality low compression format option. On the stills side, the new Dual Pixel RAW editing info definitely seems interesting if not game changing as far as post capabilities..

have a look here, full on 5D4 FAQ and claim it's his next purchase alongside kit we very well know he can't afford: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=30545.msg615042#msg615042 gotta love the first posters reaction: "Do you work for Canon?" lol Reminds me a lot of this post where ES reveals to us 1DX II info given to him by his "secret Canon contact" who'd just lifted the NDA: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/19104-canon-1dx-ii-video-camera-perspective-mini-interview-on-the-missing-details/ Even Andrew had made a blog about it: http://www.eoshd.com/2016/02/all-is-revealed-canon-1d-x-mark-ii-video-faq/ If you are reading this ES (and good chance he is) please stop spreading BS!

indeed it's why i said YMMV depending on your shooting scenario. personally ergonomics is a must. but the real deal breaker for me is the horrendous rolling shutter, never seen something so bad in a camera tbh! that's because A7S does full pixel readout and 5D3 bins.. but 5D3 resolution is still 1080p even if softer then A7S etc.. C100 for example downscales 1080p from a 4K sensor.. result is it's a lot sharper then 5D3, which is why C100 is my A-Cam but still I can match up 5D3 pretty close in post. it's not that big of a deal imo.. that being said it's definitely a shame if the 5D4 still bins at 1080p and gives out a softer image..
