From all the testing I’ve seen on YouTube (which is a lot) the R5’s oversampled aps-c mode in 4K is very good indeed, and doesn’t seem to overheat. This should also be something worth considering with regards to the R5, especially if you tend to shoot on longer lenses. Unfortunately my R5 is yet to be delivered but I feel this crop mode might turn out to be the mode I’ll use the most.

Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating timers, workarounds, and Magic Lantern
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Canon’s appalling behavior with regards to the customer not withstanding, can anybody say something about the oversampled s35 crop mode of the R5? Does it truly not overheat? How’s the rolling shutter performance? And is the low light better than the 4K binned/line skipped mess? -
Olympus gate crashes party, after passing into coma?
Simon Young replied to sanveer's topic in Cameras
If Olympus could somehow implement 10bit internal, cap the bitrate at 200mbps and fix the annoying 4gb split files I would purchase the E-m1iii in a heartbeat. -
In the behind the scenes video also published today Brandon Li specifically states he shot the whole project in the standard picture profile - hence not the greatest display of the camera's dynamic range capabilities.

Thank you for your concern but I’ve managed to make the 8bit s-log from previous Sonys look just fine in DaVinci so I’m not really worried. If you can’t get a decent image out of the a7siii I don’t think the camera is to blame. I suggest you get an Alexa LF and be done with it.

Word. I’m buying this camera for sure. And I agree we need to see more testing with regards to overheating: what cards are they using, temperature outside, codec (I hear the h265 runs hotter) and so on. But I’m confident it will run just fine at 4K 24p All-I.

This 👆🏻. If they deliver a very solid 4K 10bit 24/25p with good autofocus and s-cinetone I’m getting one for sure. And the rumors about extremely low rolling shutter makes it even more tempting.

Highly contradictory reviews on EOS R6 overheating limitation
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It’s also interesting that DPReview says the rolling shutter on the R6 seems to be really well controlled while cinema 5d says its “horrendous”... -
If this camera is as good as the rumors with regards to low rolling shutter, good af, no overheating and S-cinetone it’s going to be massive hit. I’m for sure getting one ASAP.

I hope you have better intel this time than before (lex Fujifilm XT4) “Luke”. And if you’re so well informed, any news on IBIS and S-Cinetone?

Overheat Testing 28 Cameras in Blistering Sun

MarkusPix seems like a thoroughly good dude, I’ve always liked him. And it’s still funny to me how Samsung could have killed all the other camera manufacturers had they only been a little more patient. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Interesting that Jordan says the R6 has very little rolling shutter when shooting in 4K 24. I doubt it’s any better than the 1dxiii. -
Actually a lot of cameras can - and do. If their color science is as pleasing as Canon's is a whole different story.
-
Yes, I don't even care about raw or 4K60 to be honest. The most important for me is pristine 4K, Cinetone, low rolling shutter and the ability to record for at least one hour in hot conditions without overheating issues.

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-a7sii-successor-has-16bit-raw-output-and-600mbps-bitrate/ Latest rumor: Sony A7sIII has 15 stops dynamic range, 16bit RAW output and 600mbps bitrate, 160 base ISO with S-LOG3

If the rumors about the 12mpx stacked sensors are true, PRAISE FUCKING BE. If they don’t botch it with not including s-cinetone this may well be my dream documentary video camera.
-
I’m certain I’ve seen the option of recording 1080p 24/25/30 ALL-I in the R6. It’s the 4K options that are strictly limited to IPB from what I understand.
-
Why would it overheat in 4K 30p and not 24/25p? Makes no sense whatsoever. But I’m really interested in the 1080p ALL-I from that 20mpx sensor and how it is derived - that is if it will be GH5 and Z50 class (also 20mpx sensors).
-
Disgusting. Makes the camera unusable for any type of interview work.

Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I remember a video where Potatojet puts a whole lot of cameras in a preheated incubator to see how fast they overheat when recording 4K. Funnily enough the Canon 90d just keeps going and going, indefinitely, only with breaks to repress the record button every half hour. This cheap ass camera is thus less prone to let you down on your shoot making you look like an idiot. But then again it doesn’t shoot 8K, nor does it shoot 10bit 422 and it lacks IBIS. But I has really good rolling shutter performance in 4K and very good autofocus. I know which camera I would rather bring on a paid assignment. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K

I think it’s possible to turn it off in 4K 24p as they’ve shown videos of the display where you actively have to turn it on in 24p. -
Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I totally agree with you Andrew, the R5 is a pro camera with regards to pricing and as a stills camera it certainly seems to fit the bill, but as a cinema tool or a documentary video camera it’s seems to me that it’s not reliable enough for a wide variety of applications. The overheating notwithstanding, really I think it makes a remarkable difference if a camera has 24 ms or 30ms readout speed in video. As a youtube camera it’s probably great, certainly if you’re a “creator” which basically means reviewing gear with the intent of creating good little consumers out of your followers. -
Canon 9th July "Reimagine" event for EOS R5 and R6 unveiling

Does anyone know if the 1.1x crop on the R6 in 4K is present on the 1dxiii as well? -
Canon 9th July "Reimagine" event for EOS R5 and R6 unveiling
Simon Young replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
It will be interesting to see real footage from both cameras, especially with regards to overheating and rolling shutter. I'm intrigued that they've chosen to let you decide whether or not you want oversampling when shooting in 4K with the R5 for example. I imagine that that mode is more prone to severe rolling shutter and overheating and so on and so forth.
