Blackmagic Pocket 4K media & power thread -- the best alternatives
webrunner5 replied to Emanuel's topic in Cameras
I think they just should have made a bigger body sort of like a Canon C100 with a battery as big, proper buttons, and been done with it. Sure it might have cost 1500 dollars plus the Studio Resolve. But it would have been a killer camera. I guess part of the reason was the 5" screen size. Where to put it on a small Cine camera. But I am not knocking it. It is a gift the way it is, warts and all for the money. I am sure down the road there will be some great aftermarket solutions. Maybe even BMD will come up with a proper Battery Grip. Hint, Hint. -

Come on, admit it, the damn camera is shit and get over it LoL. You gets what you pay for as they say. Now just go out and shoot an award winning feature film with it. ? -
Yeah but a m4/3 Sensor in say the PK4 is 18 mm × 13.5 mm. So it is not like the crop is too far away from it either. s35 is 23.5 × 15.7 mm. It is closer to m4/3 for what most people will shoot 4K in. It really is 1.8 for UHD, 1.74 for DCI so it is more like 20mm at times. Either way it pretty much sucks. But it is what it is. If you have a bag of Canon lenses, hopefully some EF-S ones, well you are going to buy it like it or not. So if you sort of want to match your Canon APSC footage best to shoot in DCI. Found this chart. First I ever saw listing a PK4. Arri 65mm is...well it is Huge! http://www.studiodaily.com/2018/07/download-phil-hollands-digital-film-sensor-chart/

Nikon Z7 is at EOSHD HQ - better video than Sony?
webrunner5 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah that is true, but who the heck wants to wait in this day and age. If it is your money shot you can't get you are a pissed off bastard. It's not like ram is expensive as hell in this day and age. And not like you can add to it either. This stuff ought to be endless until your card fills up. Some other cameras do that. I realize it is their first effort, but.. -
Odd duck looking lens for Drones. I think maybe is has not much distortion side to side? https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.7artisans.com%2Fh-col-216.html&edit-text=&act=url

It's Northrup. And the Z6 seems to have a pretty damn small buffer in it also. -
Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
webrunner5 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I have no clue. Trust me all I did was try to link it. Both of them. My computer on this end does not seem any different than before. Only problem I have had is these links? But I do go to an amazing amount of websites a day. I can speed read so the more the Merrier. So I might have got some goofy bug on my computer? But I have done different links on here since I think and they work as usual. I run 5 different programs a night on my computer for virus, root kits, on and on. -
Yeah you know I think with some skill it might not be too far off. I know the bit rate is lower even in Raw. But there is nearly enough info there to make some damn good stuff happen. Think about it. We have seen Very little footage with a Speedbooster on one. That ought to kick it up a notch as they say. And a couple of nice Cooke Anamorphic PL lenses hanging off the SB. Hell away we go. Andrew ought to be able to make that happen. Hint. ?
-
I think he was talking more on the lines of 4.2.0 compared to 4.2.2 I guess LoL. At least the way I understand the Y'CbCr thingy.
-
We surely didn't think we were going to get an Arri Alexa build quality, specs wise for 1300 bucks including Studio Resolve did we LoL.
-
I thought the buffer on the Canon 5D mk II sucked ass?? That would limit a lot of stuff. All the data is not just coming off the Sensor and going straight to the HDMI or Card. And yeah the HDMI spec back then was Way better than Card spec. Still is today for the most part. That is why most modern stuff is 10 bit out, not in camera. In body heat comes into that also. Cheaper to buy a Atomos Ninja V with a cheap SSD than a bunch of high spec 512gb SD, CFast cards LoL.
-
Yeah but I don't trust anyone with all my data that is a Company. They can go into Chapter 11 in a heartbeat and you are screwed. I know the odds of that happening is low but if it happens to you, well guess what you are in Chapter 11 also. I have lived long enough to have seen some crazy ass stuff when it comes to Company's, especially Tech Company's. This Vimeo thread is a great example of it. You watch down the road, even big company's like Amazon, Facebook etc. are going to get their Pee Pee's smacked. They are too big and the government is going to limit them like hell. They have monopolies, and in a sense and that is a good way to break them up. Even Apple is pushing it's luck on this privacy thing. The shit will hit the fan. And the world seems to be against Tesla for some reason. I think the big 3 auto makers here are in on it a bit. I am a fan of Tesla. So even the big boys can bite the dust overnight.
-
Yeah Wildlife and Sports I guess. But with a 40mp sensor maybe that would be a different kettle of fish as they say. I have no real clue. But maybe other than on the video side you can bet if Olympus is going to really do it will be a heck of a camera.
-
Yeah I was actually thinking about getting a Oly EM1 mk II for some birding, photography work. Probably the Nikon D500 would be better, but man so big on the lens side compared to m4/3. Even a Fuji XT-3 might work, but i have no lenses for one, and it has no IBIS like the Oly. But I am going to hold off and see what it ends up being and costing. Interesting to say the least.

Blackmagic Pocket 4K media & power thread -- the best alternatives

Sounds to me you bought the wrong camera for what you need. You will end up with some Frankenstein rig to make it happen with a PK4, and I am not sure the longevity of it turned on all the time like say a C100, C300 would have. The PK4 might be sort of a Cine camera but is sure isn't built like one is the problem. And no there is no problem leaving on a True Cine camera all the time. The old 3 Tube ENG cameras I worked with Had to be left on to stabilize even before you could use them, let alone set them up for color corrections, WB, BB. CCD ones sure changed the industry. But they looked like crap for faces at first. Yikes. Good thing there wasn't too many women in the industry at the time. I think if you are going to have it turned on all the time you should not have Any battery in it. Just use the dummy battery and keep the external one well away from the body. Even the external hard drive away for the body. Heck even a Cage is going to hold in heat. It just isn't constructed right to be on all the time and be portable in a small package.. The original BMPCC was the last camera in hell you wanted to leave on when you weren't shooting. 20 minutes max if you were going flat out with one. 30 to 40 minutes max even being conservative. And in the cold weather well hell LoL. It, and a old Flashlight, or Torch as they say in England, are the definition of a dead battery holder! ? -
Big time servers are built like a tank overall. Most are sort of two servers in one. Dual processors, tons of fans, dual power supplies, lot of hard drives, separate memory banks, on and on. They are built for a failure and to sort of keep limping along in a safe mode. I find the mechanical hard drives last longer than SSD's. And Mechanical ones give you more of a warning they are going to fail than SSD's on average. But they all fail, every component in them does with time. It is heat related as much as anything. The biggest fear I would have Owning your own servers is not mechanical problems, it is outside attacks. Viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, etc.. That stuff is a damn hard cookie to control for the average person. I would have TWO cloud bases systems if you can afford it. That way if one is attacked, fails, goes bankrupt you Still have your stuff. I would just keep Proxies at home and Rent the cloud space. This is no time to put all your eggs in one basket as they say. Even if you have 10 hard drives on your computer hooked to a raid system they are All connected to your main computer. If it gets attacked well you are F ed as they say. All of it got attacked. You have to have Everything you have on some sort of Extra back up, Unfortunately it Might be Vimeo! Doing your own I think is crazy if you have a lot of traffic or material you have shot. These do it yourself systems are very weak, and the big boy stuff is best left to people that are a wiz at it. Either way both solutions are expensive as hell if you have a Lot of data. And with 4K, and now going 8K, grab your ass.

Yeah I have a 30" S-IPS HP ZR30w monitor that I calibrate with a Spider. At the time it was new it cost over 1200 bucks in 2010. It is a 2K monitor. And I know I am not color blind because I had a job for several years where I have to be just about perfect on seeing correct colors for the Telephone Company I worked at installing and repairing Phone Lines at the main telephone building. Some of the lines had over a 1000 pairs of wires in them. All color coded different. So yeah I agree, I see a lot of wonky stuff on the web, even on here that at times that I think out of line colors wise. But we all see colors a bit different, especially women compared to men. But if we like it, well that is all that really counts isn't it, right or wrong LoL. To each their own as they say.

I would imagine over 90% of the people that buy the camera will leave it on the default settings. I wrote about that in another thread. The average person doesn't know shit about CS and Luts, Raw, on and on. They just turn it on in auto mode and away they go, especially in Video mode. And 98% shoot JPEG so that is auto mode also. That is the Factory CS. And that is what they like or they would have bought another brand. I would bet 99% of people Never change anything on an iPhone Photo, Video wise other than maybe from 4K to 1080p or vice versa. Turn it on and go. And on a iPhone, Apple has it down to a tee right out of the box for damn near perfect stuff right OOC. Heck even I probably shoot 95% of the time in dummy mode on my iPhone. When I want to get the best I use Filmic Pro, but not very often to be honest. Stuff is damn good now right out of camera on most of them. They know what the clients want, and they deliver.

Yeah that Gaming Box is a great buy for what they are. Turns a mediocre computer into a really decent rig. Sounds like a winner.
-
Yeah you look at this graph and it is sucking hind tit pretty bad. Well it is actually F ing Terrible. ? I really doubt if you have that GPU on a mother board that motherboard is going to be worth anything on upgrading to a better GPU. But you seem to have a pretty good CPU on it so maybe it might work? What type of Ram you using? 16 Gig is probably enough for now if it is good, newer spec Ram. And the new GPU Needs to have at least 6gb of ram. 4gb doesn't cut it for 4K stuff in these days. More Cuda Cores is what really makes GPU's kick ass. https://benchmarks.ul.com/hardware/gpu/AMD+Radeon+HD+6450+review

Well I found this topic on using a 12 volt battery on the PK4. Hmm is all I can say. It looks like it works and can even handle over 14 volts. But man I would want to see more proof that is a workaround long term with no damage. But the one guy on there seemed to be over powering one for months @ 16.7 volts!!!! https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=81677&fbclid=IwAR3thy08rj4vDbqRYqdVI6ohq1Aivr0Fnw2X3rYKk38jitpILzVUfzTTguo -
All sounds impressive if it isn't too much money. No way it is less than 2500 Dollars I would think.
