Probably means Panasonic is going to start making Rangefinder cameras and give up on the rest of it, they seem incapable of making a camera with AF. Joking, but it seems logical.

Sony PMW-F3 with 2500 hours on it. Should I buy it?
webrunner5 replied to basil_555's topic in Cameras
The Sony PMW F3 came out in 2010, the Canon C100 came out in 2012. By 2015 you could buy the F3 for 4000 bucks. The price of the C100 killed sales of the F3 until they lowered it. Plus Sony wanted an Anal amount of money for the 4444 upgrade, like 4000 bucks, which they lowered to 1000, then finally just included it.. -
If they did that the price would go up. Can't ever win. Plus it would be cutting into Nikon's own latest stuff.

I would be amazed many Indie films are shot with an Arri, hell you could just buy a Red after a few weeks rental. Not like you are only going to shoot one or two films a year as an Indie person. But you know more about that stuff than I do. Way out of my price range.

I agree, but the C100 was just a Lot more portable and ended up being the documentary king. The F3 was a studio camera. Canon sold one hell of a lot more C100's than Sony ever did F3's. A C100 with DPAF is worth twice what a F3 is even today on average. I don't think a person can go wrong with either, it depends on what your Jandra is more than anything. -
"Looking" professional and how important is it?
webrunner5 replied to newfoundmass's topic in Cameras
Pro trip, if you are fucking good enough you hardly ever have time for new clients, and even if one leaves plenty standing by to have you. If you can't get to that point in a few years find a different way to make a buck. You sleep a lot better when you are good at something. You can charge more and not have to kiss ass to get it. I suggest changing professions every once in a while anyway. Life gets boring as shit doing the same stuff over and over. Not really a challenge after awhile either. -
It's a big war and the winner gets the spoils, ergo being able to have the patents and then licensing it. Sony has probably been the biggest, try to set the standard, Whore over the years.

A Nikon D3 and a Canon 1d mk III had predative focus years and years ago. How do you think sports photographers got a lot of those shots, sure they knew what was probably going to happen, but the cameras began getting faster and smarter also. DSLR cameras back in the day were not as backward as people think, not the top end ones. That is why they cost 6K even years ago when you could buy a Rebel for 250 bucks. All these new top end cameras other than Panasonic for some dumb ass reason seem to think AF might be a good idea. Trouble is Panasonic is so far behind even if they do get religion it will be Pagan like compared to the rest that have a huge head start. And waiting 4 to 5 years before you come out with a new body is pretty damn stupid as fast as tech is changing. Death Wish I guess. Sony did the same stupid shit with the A7s mk III.

Well from all the later posts on this thread it looks like just a simple task of shooting a 20 second clip of your dog ends up with footage looking like your cat instead. 😬

Yeah, they are a great image maker. I wish I had bought one instead of my Panasonic AF-100. I really liked the Panny but it was not as good as a F3. But the Canon C100 I had was about as good I think. Hard to beat Canon colors and the tiny Codec was just hard to believe how little data it produced. And you didn't need an external recorder to make it happen. There is some damn good older cameras out there for hardly any money. True most don't do 4K but beautiful 1080p is pretty hard to beat, and the editing stress on your computer is Really low. -
Oh get real ,if you have a later Sony or Canon camera and use Face or Eye detect it will lock on them even if they jump out of the frame and come back. Hell even my Xperia Pro-I does the same. Works with animals also. Maybe you just need to buy an iPhone 13 Pro, sell the GH5 and all your troubles will be gone. Sounds like this is all way too complicated at your advanced age. 😁 If I can do it you must Really be old.

Yeah, I think Avid works but hell I don't need a $250.00 subscription every year to use it when I have Resolve Studio basically free for life. For twice the price you can buy an Apple M1 Mini.
-
So as Marty alludes to, it is pretty useless to do overall on a Windows machine.
-
Well, they have Face and EYE detect down pretty damn well anymore. I think you can trust them to work. Total AF in scenes, sure that is still risky no doubt. But if you locked off there are some pretty good focus pull aids in both mirrorless and smartphones now. Itis getting easier to think about AF now than it has ever been. The days of needing 4 people to operate a camera are nearing an end. And it is only going to get better. But if you are doing a lot solo I think there are some camera brands that I would not consider because of a lack of decent AF now matter what they have in them elsewise. The days of being on sticks all the time are gone also.

It is one of the reasons I bought my Sony Xperia Pro-I, it has 4K60 bitrate of 120Mbps and the same in 4K30 on the main camera. 4K120 on the main camera is encoded using the h.265 codec at 140Mbps. The main camera lens is the 1" one from the Sony RX100 mk IIV. It is using 60% of the sensor area and 12 mp of the original 20mp. I think that is pretty darn good for a Smartphone to be honest. In 8bit I am sure. We are not talking about an Arri here, not yet.
-
Yeah, but you have to consider the ratio between Mb/s versus bit rate. At say 400 Mb/s for 4K on the GH5 that is way above the average "needed" for 4k. That amount of overall data leaves a little more meat on the bone to push around compared to say a smartphone 4K. So 10 bit may not be as bad as it seems.

Why Gerald Undone is wrong about the Sigma Fp-L
webrunner5 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I will second that. Great color and plenty of detail right out of camera. -
ProRes is an Apple product, it has Nothing to do with Red. Look at the bottom and you will see Nikon Z9 listed as licensed to use it from Apple. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200321
-
Yeah, I forgot about that. Thanks.
-
The only thing bad about Resolve is that you can not do Pro Res with it. You have to have an Apple computer and Final Cut Pro to do it. And the latest FCP is pretty damn expensive. And you really need the new M1 apple stuff to edit well in this day and age.

@leslie is right. You would be amazed what difference a high end lens makes on a camera. Buy a cheap camera and a heck of a good lens. Any camera made in the last 6 years or so is all the camera a newer person needs. I have owned just about every model iPhone since they have been out and a lot of the Samsung Note phones, and I did a test with my wife and son when he was over and I, and them, liked the old Apple iPhone 6s plus shots better than any phone I have ever owned. So that can tell you that we have reached a peak in quality and we are sort of wasting our time buying the latest and greatest. Now granted phone photos are pretty hyped colors and saturation, Olympus cameras were like that also OOC, But the average person really likes that look. The picture below my car with the wooden roof is from my 6s Plus in Arizona. And that has not much editing done to it.

Can you do Raw with a Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4k or is it only work with an Atomos product? Because this sounds like the biggest pain in the rear end known to mankind.

webrunner5 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sounds like You ought to practice what you preach. You do realize that this is his railroad. You are lucky it is not mine. You have to be pretty stupid to poke the guy that owns it, like him or not -
I would like to apologize to kye and anyone else that owns a GH5 it is not my place to criticize a camera or camera system that they have researched, spent their hard earned money to purchase, and found to have meet their expatiations and proud to own and to suggest to others. I have no right to do this, not to make someone look bad, or their product that has served them well. Again, I am sorry. It was just plain not right for me to do that.
