  1. I think when you are comparing Film to modern 4k through 8k digital cameras now, film Will have a look of lower resolution. Film Never was, or has been known to be super sharp as heck. There is grain in film at 25 ISO. It is made up of grain particles. Now a jerky movement, sure that is what old film cameras looked like for War Correspondents back in the day. I am sure the DoP of Dunkirk tried to add some of that esthetic to the film. But I am not a big 4k and above fan anyways. I love the look of 1080p, about as far as I like to output. I mean Luminous Landscape years ago sort of proved a 6.3mp Canon 10D had as much resolution as 35mm film. Even 4k is past 6mp each frame now. But I get what you are talking about. Film does have a beautiful, unique look to it. No digital camera will ever look that way I doubt, not video wise. Photo wise I have seen some Leica digital stills that were damn close, even some MF B&W . I had a Hasselblad H3D-31, with a 31mp digital back on it that looked more film like than film did years ago in B&W! It was crazy good. But this guy I follow at times shows shots using firm stock that are about as sharp as I have ever seen. But Hassy, Leica has the kind of lenses to help make it happen. https://mrleica.com/page/2/
  2. Why not, you just stated Fuji fudged the ISO almost a stop, and a FF is pretty well known to have a 1 stop advantage over APSC. So there is nearly 2 stops right there. Max stated it might be even more than that in reality. Sony sensors are just crazy good for low light. No real surprises here. Fuji X Trans sensors are not known for their low light ability to start with.
  3. Color looks to me a Lot different on the GH5s, and in a good way better. It is leaning toward the Orange, Red look that has been popular forever with Canon. More EVA1 looking than the GH4 look on the GH5. But the colors are better on the GH5 than on the GH4. That would not have been too hard to do. They were the definition of the Panny digital look, same with the G7. People from Mars Green to boot. They are really different beasts colors wise.
  4. So you want a GH5 that can't AF very well, not so hot DoF, not so hot in low light, and is only 20mp, when 70% of your stuff is Photos. Interesting. But it does have a joypad and so does the A7 mk III. I would go with a Olympus EM1 mk II over the GH5 if I was more into Photos if you want m4/3. But no joypad on it either. I can see a joypad as a plus. Works great looking through the EVF IF you are a right eyed shooter. If not your face will be in the way as a lefty. The you can use your nose on the joypad! I have had a Bunch of the Canon FF, APSH EoS 1D type bodies. I know all about joypads. Canon has had one for years and years on their Pro bodies. Not as easy to use as you would think with your face smashed up on the body. You sort of end up sticking your finger up your nose.
  5. Hurry up and wait clips. Man I don't have the patience for that LoL.
  6. I would consider buying the native 14-140mm, latest version lens for just the times you don't want to carry a bag of lenses, and want casual AF, and a one size does all thing. They are a damn good lens for the money used. MF pretty much sucks on Any and All m4/3 Panasonic lenses though because of the Fly by Wire thingy. But just about every company now has the same problem other than a few select Olympus lenses with the Clutch thing in them. Not sure about Fuji lenses though. Never owned a Fuji APSC lens in my life. Lot of Fuji B4 lenses, old Medium Format lenses though. I used the 14-140mm a lot on my Panasonic AF100, and other than focus I never said hell I wish I had bought X, X lens with me other than Low light. It is a damn sharp lens if you get the right one. But I am like @mercer I tend to stay at one focal length even with a zoom on a take, and with a variable aperture lens like the 14-140mm is you need to shoot at same F stop or it can look wonky. So pretty much in manual mode. You are going to have to be in manual mode anyways on the Cine lenses. Otherwise just take your time, and that is pretty much the best way to do video unless you are trying to keep up with Sports or Children. But I have found the later 14-140mm has pretty fast AF on the newer bodies in auto. Never used one on a GH5 though.
  7. Yeah going to Very hard to beat a Sony A7 mk III. For the money now it just seems like the thing that fits most peoples needs. I guess there is the Fuji X-H1 but still no low light gain and not FF. And AF is not as good either. I guess a used A7r mk II is not the worse idea if your main goal is photos. 42mp is sort of the cats ass for that.
  8. Interesting, but Not surprising. https://***URL removed***/news/3228794625/rumor-canon-full-frame-mirrorless-already-being-used-by-select-pro-photographers

    Interesting new Tech. https://www.yahoo.com/news/microled-vs-oled-two-hot-182024584.html
  10. Yeah but I am retired, so I have pretty much the whole day to watch Vloggers if I want to. And some days I am watching 10+ hours of them or more. I have always tried to learn new things every day, even when I was young.. My Favorites file on Firefox has just a crazy amount of items in it. Over a 1,000 easy. And no I don't follow Casey much myself either as of late. Really not too much interested in what he even reviews. I rarely buy Anything new as since retirement my spending money is on the weak side as they say. I pretty much have to sell something to buy something else expensive. So I only buy used stuff, and even then used like new stuff. That way I find it is easier to re sell for close to the same as I paid for it if I am lucky..
  11. Well they are claiming damn near 20 stops DR. Yikes. http://www.studiodaily.com/2013/01/next-gen-cameras-red-says-dragon-does-20-stops-panavision-readies-65mm-comeback/
  12. Well sad to say other than some of the Reviewers, he is one of the few people that knows much of anything about video on DPR, bullshit or not. It is a Photography site, but few give much of a crap about video on there. But I see more and more articles and threads on video on there now..
  13. Well I didn't post this with the BMPCC DR stats because it was not listed in the cameras tested, but the Original Sony A7s, which I have, is FF and Only 8 bit, is doing pretty damn well according to the article. So it seems to have worked pretty well on it in SLog 2.. But Sony seems to have some magic Mojo in their sensors as of late. Now I think S log 3 on the later A7's is too much for just 8bit. You Can Not overexpose them, or it just goes to hell. But S log 2 seems to work well. But there is more and more high end Cine cameras that are going FF or even bigger. I think it has to do more with 6k, 8k just is too much for a s35 sensor?? I am not sure the real reason? I don't pay much attention to cameras that I would have to win the Lotto to buy total specs wise. https://nofilmschool.com/2014/07/sony-a7s-dynamic-range-arri-alexa-amira
  14. Oh I will agree the BMPCC probably has about the most DR of any camera that is affordable. Although the Sony A7s in S Log 2 is calmed to be even more DR than the BMPCC. I will admit I think even with the links that does seem low for the BMPCC. If it really is that low than a Canon T2i must have 5 stops, and I have seen some tests that is not far from true.
  15. Both of these articles State that the BMPCC Has 9 Stops of DR. Even less in ProRes. Even if you believe 13 stops, which it isn't, they show ProRes is even less. I rest my case. If you people really believe the bullshit that company's try to pass for fact I have a Bridge I am selling cheap. I am not knocking a BMPCC, I had one once. They are a special camera. But most of the cameras Really don't have the true DR they state they do. And all the cameras that have super DR, Reds, Arri's are getting it in Raw not some other Codec. http://www.similaar.com/foto/pocket-dr/bmpcc.html https://www.focus-numerique.com/camescope/tests/blackmagic-design-bmpc-951.html
  16. You are Not going to get 13 stops on a BMPCC without using Raw! Silly stuff. You will get 10 to 11 without Raw. And every camera made in the last 5 years can do that. And even in Raw if you don't have your exposure perfect, WB set to 40 IRE, nothing much over 100 IRE, you Aren't getting 13 stops either.
  17. Well the problem I see with it is the more often you post the more money you make. So it leads to trying to get a Vlog out Every day. who can come up with interesting info that others could give a crap about everyday? Casey seemed to be the only one that sort of was doing that with much success in content. But his was like 12 minutes on average I think. The ones that only come out say once a week you Can accumulate a decent amount of Useful information to go on for 30 minutes. I follow a lot of Sailboat Vloggers and in a week sailing around they do have a story worth hearing that lasts up to 30 minutes or more..
  18. Well your problem is solved. Just buy a 8k Red Weapon video camera and it take 33.3mp frame grabs. Oh and it has 17+ stops of dynamic range to boot.
  19. Well with folded optics they can even have real zoom lenses in cellphones in the near future. I think in 3 to 4 years it will be here. I would imagine the phones Might have to be a bit thicker?? And with Google reportedly to acquire Lytro that ought to push the envelope. Other than top end gear, camera company's are going to be in deep doo doo in the near future. Smartphones are Really going to take over photo, video to 95% of the people that shoot. I don't really see how they can stay in business long term.
  20. Well I don't think many people would buy it at all just for video. Nikon seems to be brain dead on LiveView and a few other goodies you Need for video. For a company that produced the very first consumer video DSLR camera you would think they would be the leader in it. But I Do like the Nikon Color Science, always have. And to me that many MP for photos is sweet. It is still to me, rewarding to hold a high end DSLR. There is still some magic to them.
  21. Well I don't know if this has been posted but.... The Sony is 2x better.
  22. Well my Sony A7s is Suppose to have 15 stops of DR. But that is in Photo mode not Video mode. Most cameras drop 3 stops compared to Photo on the video side. And that 12 stops takes S Log 2 to get on the A7s. Probably Only 10 stops, 11stops at most in the normal modes. I can't remember what it is called, but Zak knows LoL. With the Consumer Codec in these cameras you are limited to 12 stops of DR I don't care what you do. It has to do with Long, Short something like that.
  23. Yeah but 10 to 12 stops is pretty damn good to be honest. A lot of older cameras are at 8 stops, 8.5 stops. You have to figure pretty much the finial output to Rec. 709 is going to Only be 7 stops! If you go down to the bottom of the page it shows the DR of a lot of cameras. And Anything we can afford to buy is lucky to be 12 DR tops. https://wolfcrow.com/blog/where-cameras-stand-in-dynamic-range-film-vs-digital/
  24. I really doubt either camera even has 12 stops of DR at base ISO let alone 2500 ISO. In Raw Photo mode maybe, video nah. You have to be shooting Raw 12 bit, 14 bit stuff to get that high of DR. Even the 5D mk III in ML Raw is not getting 14 stops. BMPCC is 13 stops. GH5s Ain't got no 14 stops.
