Shoulder rig for a mirrorless camera - how not to go overboard?
webrunner5 replied to heart0less's topic in Cameras
@Kye How did you get so smart so quick?? Your embarrassing the rest of us! Out of likes. But you deserve one. Yeah everyone has their likes and not likes. Wow that first video is, well amazing. That kid, he is to me, is talented and funny to boot. Now that is a V logger. One of the few countries, Japan, I have never been to in the far east. I would probably be a Bull in a China Store now at my age. Plus I have No F ing Patience. So I doubt it would work out well there LoL Polite, I am not! Not proud of it though. I wish I was the other. You need to get good like him Kye. If you are going to copy someone, might as well be him. About the best I have seen, and he has a lot more to learn being as young as he is. He has talent no doubt. -
You lucky dog! You been holding out on us.
-
Well it is pretty hard to beat 4k output from a A6500. Just about the best there is. Now the 1080, well not as good, too soft, but 4k, finger licking good! But I don't care what camera you have today, they all have their good points, bad points. If you like camera A that is the one for you, Camera B that is the one for me, on and on. We live right now in the best time there has Ever been for video cameras the average person can afford that was just a dream 3, 4 years ago. Maybe they were good then, and now they are cheap, and now good, no great ones are coming out left and right. Lucky us to be in this time frame.

Ahh so the Fuji is Not realistic. Hmm. Bummer. The first video you have he is VERY red headed! We have been deceived. Damn Fuji color profiles LoL!
-
Ehh you have a Child with Red Hair! No I won't ask LoL.
-
Wow you have a lot of toys. Can I adopt you? Also you need to trim your beard if that happens LoL. Well done. Been nice to had a A, B comparison with the X-H1. I wonder if F Log is up to par with the S log on the Sony.
-
I don't really like the A7sII very much. They sort of made it too good looking LoL. Doubt I would ever buy one. I like the grungy look. The 3 videos you have above are super nice looking. But to me not Filmic, Cine looking. But it is stuff you really should shoot to document your children, cat LoL, your family. You sort of have an obligation to do that. And that is the look you want to keep down the road forever for them.. That is what they really look like. So I think what you have is perfect to do that. But it is not what I like. It is too good in a way for what I like. But I grew up in a different time, and I like what I remember when I was probably your age. And it was not clean, and perfect, it was Grundy to say the least. The movies I went to did not look 4k. They had grain out the butt. Photos had grain out the butt. But it is was the best there was at the time. And I still like that look. And now you will like this new look, and it will be yours to remember. And there is nothing wrong with that. We all have our thing as they say. And you did good on those videos. Some of the best I have seen for real life stuff. Grats.

I did not take this, my son seems to have commandeered my A7s LoL. But this is the color and look I like. I know it is not a Fuji, it is a A7s. That is the reason I bought one. My different strokes.
-
The kids just look too red to me. But you are right different strokes. It just seems to me Fuji has taken a wrong turn from back in the days of the Fuji Finepix S2 Pro. Now that was color. This new one looks Digital as hell. But to me after the went from CCD sensors they all went down hill. The Original Olympus E1 was just beautiful also, and it was just like 5.1 MP. Very few new cameras other than Canon, have looked very good to me now. Well the Nikon D750 is great color wise. I guess it is their softness and CS that makes it happen with the Canon's.. Now my A7s is just funky looking to be honest, but I like it. So like you said, different strokes.
-
Well I must admit I have not used it much for Photos, my son has, and it does look damn good. One of my Favorite cameras of all time was the Original Canon 5D, and they were 12 MP also. It takes less MP than you think unless you are doing landscapes and going big. One of the main reasons I bought the A7s was to me it has a grungy look video wise, even photo wise. I like to shoot women a lot both video and photo, "Dirty Old Man Syndrome", I have lots of subjects here at the College Campus, and it makes them look more natural, not just show every wrinkle, flaw they have. I am not a big lover of super sharp stuff. I doubt I will ever even shoot 4k with it. Now if someone wants to send me their old Atomos Shogun I would be more than willing to try it LoL I just can't seem to bring myself buying a Recorder that cost damn near as much as I paid for the camera!

Shoulder rig for a mirrorless camera - how not to go overboard?

I have one and I broke the camera extension on it in a very short time. But I am hard on equipment. Throw it all in the trunk and away we go! I Never found it to be very comfortable, it always seemed to be crooked to your shoulder. Better than nothing. But for the price I guess you can't complain. -
Man I am just not seeing what you are seeing Kid. Yeah, the Kids look pretty good I will give you that. On my monitor, yes it is calibrated, it just is muddy looking. No way it looked like that in real life. I know the buildings in the background are mostly gray but they are a drab grey. Not very, hell I don't know the word, exciting looking. Just not my cup of tea. I just am not impressed with this camera other than some B&W stuff I have seen. But I know it is new, people will get better with it.
-
Yeah I am sure Red is not a happy camper since Arri has come out with the Alexa LF. Red still has the 8k stuff, but man that has to be a damned limited market. Top end films, and a few that do big time VFX stuff. But I don't see Red going out of business anytime soon! They have some great products, it just to me it is not very film like looking.
-
Well For the price they are selling all their cameras Red can't be too happy about that. Glad to see some more competition at the top. They have some damn tough roads ahead to make it work, but Blackmagic did it in a pretty short time frame. So it can be done. I sure like the look of their products though, nobody is going to argue with that part. Even with the add on it seems smaller than a Red. And they are small to start with. I know it sounds crazy but at that price I would have to go with a 5k, 6k body. Top end stuff is moving past 4k pretty fast. I have no clue where it is going to stop. It looks like 8k is going to be here on a lot of stuff by 2020, even TV's. Yikes.

Yeah but a electronic Gimbal gives new life to old cameras that never had IBIS in them. If used right and not in excess I think they can look damn good with practice. Most people overuse them, I did also when I first got mine. The better ones are pretty damn good. The biggest failure with them is forgetting to charge the batteries in them LoL! Ahh yeah a A6300 is a damn nice camera for the money. They are just Too small for my big hands. Crazy thin camera. But they have a great output, and you have a FF upgrade path if you want to stay with Sony. That is a nice option. -
That video is sort of proof that 4k has Really narrowed the gap between cheap stuff, and Oh My God expensive stuff output wise. Sure the iPhone X doesn't have 16 stops of DR, but I certainly didn't see where it was lacking in that video, and you have to put yourself in the vast majority of peoples shoes, they have no clue what the hell DR even is LoL I have the X and it has just about every trick in the book, especially if you use the Filmic Pro App. It has more video stuff than my Note 8. Better specs, but I still sort of like the Note 8 output. It maybe the screen, and the screen size that has more to do with it on the 8 than being "Better". Either way both of my phones are capable of some unheard of output even 3 years ago. I would be damn proud of that video, to most people that is a winner. And what it was taken with just Wow when you think of it. And in your pocket all the time, just a miracle.

I know of No camera line that has Cheap Native lenses. The main reason a lot of the Sony lenses are damn expensive is that they are new and few used ones around. But brand new they Ain't giving Canon and Nikon lenses away either. And Fuji is not giving their lenses away either, and they are APSC. I don't know how Anyone but a Dentist can afford a sack of new lenses LoL. And a fair amount of Canon EF lenses work as good or in some cases better on a Sony A7r mk II, Mk III than on a Canon. I would bet the new Sony A7 mk III might even be better than all but the A9, They both have a ton of focus points. I am using a Canon APSC 10-22mm in crop mode on my A7s adapted and it is doing surprisingly well focus wise on it. I am sure not as well as on a Canon, but the original A7s is not known for super good focus as the later ones. I am using this adapter, works out great when I use Slog 2. But I had to sand down, file down a bit of the rear plastic "Protrusions" on the EFS lenses to make them work! No problem with the normal EF lenses. They hit the glass that protects the ND filters in the back of the unit. Sort of the "No Balls, No Blue Chips" thing on expensive lenses. An old Poker card game saying. I am sure this adapter is probably not as good as a Metabones, never owned one, but they don't have the ND filters in one that I Need in Slog 2. 3200 ISO min is a ball buster without them in daytime. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019D5P7EQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I rest my case. I kind of thought this Forum was Mostly geared towards Video. Hell I don't even care if the camera I buy can Even shoot stills! Or if so very well. I surely didn't buy my Sony A7s in the hope as using it as a stills camera. Interesting suggestion on here . But your viewpoint is represented by the vast majority of people in the world to be sure. But to say that if Video is your main thing, hmm. You are aware of what little MP it takes to shoot video, and what little MP most of the high end Cine cameras even have in them?

Interesting Vlogger. Interesting other website this guy has. He is comparing the Sony A7 mk III Price wise to other cameras, even other A7xx ones..

Wow if anyone on here has an eye toward Photojournalism this live Camera Store broadcast is the cats ass. Spoiler alert: She uses a Canon 5D mk III. She is scary good with it, she even shot the latest Olympics with it, and this video puts the reality , you Really don't Need the latest and greatest to make Photo, Video stuff happen. It is a very Looooong video though. Probably an hour or more. Well worth watching I don't care what you do. This woman is a Pro and gives some damn good tips. Watch it, all of it, it is that good. There is something in this video that everyone on here can gain knowledge about. She knows her stuff.

What lens Kid? Not too wild about the bokeh in the background. I don't know I find it distracting. Colors look damn good on it though.

That guy is the main, pretty much Only moderator on there. I have seen him say some total Jack Ass stuff on there. I am sure he is a smart guy, but rumors are a dime a dozen. If you want to take the word of Another website, A Rumor site at that, and put it on Your website as Gospel, yeah he is a Jack Ass. I Never go to that stupid website anymore ever. Same with DVXuser anymore. They overall are a total joke, other than a few people now. It used to be good, well better is a Better word, but now... I think most of the really smart, make a living people don't come to Any of these forums often. They are too busy making money, putting food on the table, talking to others that are experts on email, or the phone, Not on Personal View! There is a TV show called the "View" that sort of reminds me of that website!

Shoulder rig for a mirrorless camera - how not to go overboard?
webrunner5 replied to heart0less's topic in Cameras
How long are you takes on average? 10 seconds, 10 minutes. Tripod, shoulder rig for long stuff, Gimbal for short stuff. None of the shoulder rigs I have Ever seen help much because a camera like you have has not enough total weight to it to steady very well. Old ENG cameras were pretty crude and weighed 22 to even 25 pounds with dual batteries hanging off of them, But if you look at the big time press core they are still using 18 to 20 pound cameras and that is for stability, not just for looks. Pretty impossible to get that on a 6 pound rig. Plus they are using a B4 lens, and small sensors that has pretty much Everything in focus all the time. But they can zoom in big time and get separation if they need it. On 12x to 20x lenses not that hard to do.They are a 2/3" or a 1" sensor, so easy to get that look. They invented Tripods and Fluid Heads for a reason, and that is why movie studios use them most of the time. If this stuff was easy everyone would be doing it for a living. But if you have a lens with IS in it and learn to walk toe to heal with knees bent it can be pretty good for short shots. But since the lens you have isn't stabilized, ehh hard to do handheld. Maybe moving up to the A6500 with IBIS in it would be a better, cheaper way to go? Better camera overall also. But easy to spend your money. -
Watch this video from 16:30 to 17:30 and you be given a good insight on how to expose for the best finial output. I agree completely with what he is saying on the majority of shots. Nothing can apply to every shot.. Especially with the gear most of us can afford, and that is 8 bit. A Waveform monitor is sort of a must have though.
