To me I would agree that 4k is Over the Top, what I like is 4k down scaled to 1080p. I think that is My sweet spot, with a little mix of film look in it. I am not into the turquoise skies, crushed blacks, film grain from hell stuff. I want to see buttery smooth stuff with good definition in it. Yeah 35mm movie film has that, but we can't afford that. Hmm, I think I just described sort of a BMPCC Raw look I like so much. Oh well.

That was some serious resolution on the opening shot! And colors really did pop.

My thoughts on the Kipon Medium Format "Speedbooster"

Passing out Tinfoil Hats soon. Put in your order, get em while there hot. Really! This stuff never ends. Aliens are coming after our ass I hope, to put us out of out misery LoL. Jesus. Man that has some Serious 3D DoF to it. Awesome! -
We are also forgetting the Ursa Mini 4k model, hell they are only 2995 new. I have seen them for 2400 bucks used. 2400 bucks, that is a hell of a buy for a real Camcorder style camera. I am not sure a GH5 is worth 2000 when I can get a Mini for 2400! They have the bugs worked out on them. And the thing shoots Raw and ProRes, Raw for 2400 bucks and a s35 sensor! Heck maybe they are a better buy than a used Canon C100 mkII? I have never used either one but it is 4k and has Raw. Opinions.

LMAO!

Hard to believe a full sized DSLR body overheats. Pretty crazy. Other than that, looks nice.

5K RAW video on the Olympus E-M1 II usable for short clips!

Hmm, I think if I was a bit serious about movie making like you seem to be, the Sony FS5 might be the way to go. 4k is really going to be the future, and if someone wants to hire you and you have a C100ii well, I know you can rent, but all your lenses would be Canon, etc. Seems like the FS5 is a lot more future proof. Plenty of nice looking footage shot on them. Can use on a drone, more money I know but... I am just doing this stuff now as a hobby, family thing, that hometown historical thing. Probably never make a dime. I can't throw a lot into it. But I think a person needs to buy into one system and get damn good at it. Have to be rich to have 3 or 4 systems, different lenses, gear etc, and will you really be great at any of them? Be able to shut your eyes and change settings? But I am coming from a old TV ENG shooter guy. I could not screw up, it was a one chance shoot. I knew my camera better than I knew myself LoL. But it was relaxing as hell knowing you knew, if you know what I mean. That has a big effect on making better footage. And enjoying yourself, and putting actors, clients at ease. The old yeah, I know what you mean, I can get that effect, I know my camera inside and out. Stations kept cameras a Long time back then. They were as expensive as hell. Like 100k expensive each. And I could not believe the beating they were able to take year after year. And you can go on ebay and still buy them that work!! What the hell lol. And they cost about 75 dollars, 150 tops with a Beta-Cam SP deck on them now. And they only weighed nearly 25 pounds with a 20x Fuji lens and the big Anton Bauer battery! But they were easy as hell to walk with, both forward and backwards. Hardest thing was to hold them level horizon wise for a long period of time. Then you had to drag a heavy ass Tripod, Fluid head, no Carbon Fiber then, with you also! They weighed damn near as much as the camera. -

You know it will not be 995 bucks if they make it 2.5k or more, ain't going to happen. I said it before, BM would sell a crap load more of them again if they do a MkII version. I hope you are right. So much for a C100 mkII then. Christ, I need to win the Lotto! Or get Donald Trump's tax return back! Maybe he has a Arri Alexa XL he is not using anymore he could let me use for ...say 5 years. I'll laugh all night about that! Funny stuff. -

Wow the stabilazation of the Olympus is Very impressive. Could be a better video cam than the GH5 in some circumstances because of it... And I would imagine OOC colors probably better also. Hmm. -
So was it all OOC, with nothing applied, in Post? Looked damn clean, and damn sterile. But that is a good thing if you are doing say a ...Car Commercial. But you can make sterile grungy a hell of a lot easier than the other way around! I guess it is hard to beat for a all around camera. Probably not on my Radar though unless I had a bag full of A lenses laying around.

I thought it was very well done. Dog a little Too Orange in the grass shots, I would assume that was the Smartphone. I think you pulled off something that is damn hard to do, and that is someone speaking from their heart, not from a script, and make it flow like a well Rehearsed script. She is a damn good non actor LoL, and your camera movements kept me concentrated on what she was tying to convey. Impressive.

I don't know about being sharper, but the creamy look of the film is way nicer than the harshness of the A7 for sure. The Sofa shot is really nice with the Mamiya. Now for Landscape, I guess you might want the digital look. Then maybe not LoL. -
Yeah a C100 mkII has to be at the top for the money. It is just laid out so well, both for tripod and run n gun, no way you can beat it if you don't need 4k. And since it is down sampled from 4k to 1080p in camera that saves a step in post. ISO 320 to 80,000 is crazy good, built in ND filters, and to be able to record two different formats at the same time is a crazy good idea. Yep, I have made up my mind, that is the camera I am buying. I don't want to have 10 things hanging off a camera to make it work.

Yeah but yeah you have the "Equivalence" thingy to help a bit I know. 2.8-4 is in reality really 5.6-8 on a m4/3 camera without a SB. But that can hurt also. And at f8 you are getting into diffraction territory. It is hard to win with using m4/3 with video. No great DoF, bad low light ability, diffraction, not the worlds best auto focus. Although MF solves that, but is not always good. But the GH5 maybe a bit better in low light and AF, fingers crossed. There is a reason s35 is sort of the 800 pound Gorilla for digital video, and even 35, 70mm for film.
-
Yeah, and a 35, 50, 80 Square Front PL mount will only cost you like $25,000.00 bucks. Gasp! But in reality, worth it. But easy to spend your money.

The problem I see Canon, Nikon has, is OK there is a bigger demand for DSLR's this week, but hell Canon, Nikon only update their top end stuff like once every 3 or 4 years. You know and I know 3 years from now is a lifetime is the Camera industry. No way, I doubt other than a Professionals, normal people are not going to buy a DSLR 4 years from now. Sony will have 5 new models out by then. Can Canon, especially Nikon, afford to even do that?? Man I don't see good times for Nikon unless they come out with something that just blows us away this year.
-
I agree with your points, but the problem is DoF. That is why m4/3 sort of sucks is the Lack of DoF. So you buy these fast primes and shoot at 0.95, 1.8, hell what are you going to get in focus? And the Speed Boosters even make it worse. Yeah you end up with close to a s35 sensor size, but you don't buy one to shoot at f8. You buy them to shoot at 0.75, 0.95. Jesus. I know, you just can't win with them, you are screwed with lack of DoF, and you are screwed with Diffraction. In reality they are not that great to use. It sucks, it really does. Then they are not great at high ISO, and if you aren't rolling in the dough, your lighting equipment sucks ass. No good answer if you don't have big bucks. I don't know, maybe the answer is to buy older used pro gear like the Sony F3, Canon C100, FF gear like the Sony A7s, Canon 5D mkIII, etc, etc., hell I don't know

Well this James Miller guy seems to have figured out how to grade it. Maybe he will sell his LuT, and I will be sucked into another mirrorless form factor. Hate them, but I can not argue with what the GH5 seems to be bringing to the table. I can't see anything, under say $4000.00, new or used, that can touch it in reality. I guess if you are serious you can't ignore it. Especially if the summer firmware updates come true.

I guess you will have to give up photography, or buy a used photo camera then LoL.
-
Nice to know that about the BMPC4K camera. Mosaic filter, I never heard of that before?
-
I am not too sure in the near future, like 4 to 5 years, we will even be able to buy a Photo camera. they will all be video cameras with a Photo grab option. Just the opposite we have today. An 8k video camera, with 33.2mp still grabs, why not.
-
All you have to do is buy a cut filter and the IR problem is solved with the BMPCC. I don't see that being a big deal. Want no rolling shutter, buy the BMPC4K, global shutter. There is no way you can beat the output that BM has for the money on any camera they have. Yeah the BMMCC I don't like all you have to do to rig one, but they are amazing for the price and money. Especially the 4k one.
