Using that viewfinder would be sweet though. That is a nice item for the money. Trouble is it is more than the damn camera. ?

What Do Y'all Think of The Kinefinity Mavo LF?
webrunner5 replied to Zach Goodwin2's topic in Cameras
Here is a behind the scenes look at the Kinefinity 6K. Looks pretty damn good form these grabs. For the well heeled people on here might be a great option. https://nofilmschool.com/kinefinity-mavo-lf-launch-film?utm_source=No+Film+School+newsletter&utm_campaign=de552fde49-Thursday+Round-up+Newsletter+6.13.19&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_00e2faa2b4-de552fde49-426184909 -
Some screen grabs from the big boy toys. Hopefully the Panasonic S1H will benefit form the same CS. https://issuu.com/varicam/docs/shotonvaricam_5?e=29139654/70210005

Yeah that is a pretty scary kit with all those wires everywhere.

What Do Y'all Think of The Kinefinity Mavo LF?
webrunner5 replied to Zach Goodwin2's topic in Cameras
And Friend we are talking WAY out of most peoples price range. Sure I can by a Red VV if I had a ton of money. I am just suggesting maybe a cheaper option. And the Kinefinity 6K is not even a proven system yet. It might be a dog. My opinion also. -

I wonder if a person could take a Canon C300 mk II and put a Speedbooster on it and not do as well? Sure has a nice look to it. Hard to beat a Canon C camera. -
Magic Lantern 4K mod coming to Canon 700D / T5i
webrunner5 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah but i think some of the older Canon cameras, even the cheaper ones have a better CS to me than the new ones do. At least for what we like to shoot. I would much rather have say a C100 mk II over the original for features, but I think at least for the output I like the mk II is a downgrade not an upgrade CS wise. But I admit if I was a Pro trying to make money at it the mk II would be a better bet, even CS wise. That look is in now whether I like it or not lol. What I find with my EOS M is it is mostly up to the build you have how good it looks. And once it is on a SD card that card seems to be stuck with it like it or not. My biggest problem was the damn thing has 2.0.3 firmware on it and that does not seem to be the way to go. So I am going to try to downgrade it and start all over. I can't find a build using the latest firmware I can do the SD card hack with. And that does make a big difference duration wise on footage. -
Well that is a frame grab from a Canon 1DC to show how much detail they have in 4K. But yeah I get your point. But your example Is lighted, and it makes a ton of difference using the Lantern. So that is a Great example. I know I bust people's asses on here, but I want to see people get better, learn to light and grade. This is more than just turning on a camera and let it rip. A person should never be in a hurry doing video, willing to do take 2, take 3 etc.. We ought to dissect every video and say this is great, and this is bad, and learn from it, not just take everything for granted. That is how we improve. Sure on average we are not going to produce top stuff, but if we don't learn we never will. Everyone wants to get better.

Well poorly lit would be the obvious choice. You can't get something out of a grade if it wasn't there to start with. But it should have been graded better in the darker scenes. There is no mood when you can't see the actors, their expressions.. The story and the effects in it are great, it just should not have been shot the way it was lighting, grading wise. Sure this stuff is hard as hell, but it puts the XT-3 in a bad light, pun intended. It makes it look like it has shit poor DR, and they are pretty good with DR. But you can't expect miracles. I don't know how it was shot, but it looks like a lot of Run n Gun, and that is the consequences of that style. You Have to light stuff. You have to block off shots like that.
-
You don't know your ass from a hole in the ground about grading. Maybe you Ought to Calibrate your Monitor if you think it is OK. It sure as hell isn't on mine. I guess the new norm on here if it is half assed it is fine. Sure we are probably going to half ass stuff, but if that is the best video on You Tube to show off the XT-3 well Woopty Ding.

It is Not amazing if it is too dark whether you like it or not. In this day and age nearly Any camera, even Phones can take great stuff if you can grade and edit. If I was the African actor in it I would be pissed. He is Black alright, so Black half the time he just sort of blends into the woodwork. Piss poor grade. This is suppose to be what a Person of Color is Suppose to look like in a dark environment. Not just a freaking shadow!

This is a shot taken with one of those Toyo Field Cameras I was talking about. This has a nice look to it to me.

Don't even bother scanning your negatives. Way too much money for a good scanner, and the results are worse than sending the negatives off and having a professional company scan, and even print them for you. Might be worth having a printer, but even that is better left to Pro shops to be honest. I think the magic of this is getting and old camera with no Auto Anything and using a light meter to figure out what you need. If you are use to shooting you can use the Sunny 16 rule. But it will not be super accurate, especially if shadows are involved. This is more about being slow and observing your surrounds for a better angle to shoot more than just taking a picture quickly, then running to the next location. It is about the experience more than the shots. Just slow down and enjoy it, don't make it a job. You are suppose to look back at the 10 shots you took when you get the negatives or prints back and smile about the experience, fun you had, that is what it is about. Remembering the beauty of the location, smiling about the person you took a picture of. I just don't think you can do that shooting a Digital camera. It is too easy to accomplish with one. Just less satisfaction in it.

That is pretty damn good footage from something people might consider a Toy camera.
-
It is pretty good on the GH5 now. Son'y claim to fame is Face and Eye tracking. On average stuff it is not stand outish. Now on the A9, well sure that is great all around.
-
Yeah but there is so many more things that can go wrong shooting film, especially B&W. Digital is easy mode. You Really have to F up to F up Digital.
-
No I don't think that way. You Only have in the case of say a 4x5 view camera maybe 5 or 6 shots. You damn sure slow down and take your time. And you make it count. I had way more keepers than than I do with Digital. You just get lazy with Digital. And it was more about finding the wonderful place to shoot at more than the shot itself. It was more relaxing, rewarding. And the anticipation of the wait for the negatives to come back. Sort of like Christmas every week. It is special.. Wow, nice shots. Sweet. What is the name of the app?

I will admit film is a lot more laid back. It is worth getting into in a small way at least at first. I had some great times with my wife, and when my kids got old enough teaching them.

I have Never wanted a Xpan. Too big of a camera, and I was never into Panos. Plus you go though film faster than shit from a Goose. Friend of mine had one and it sat in his closet more than he ever used it. They are a odd duck. It is very specialized. But they sold a lot of them for some reason? Leica could gold plate a dog turd and put a red badge on it and they would sell a shit pot of them. Leica people are...well sort of weird lol. A M3 was my favorite one I had. The last of the small, light ones. Plus they even worked without a battery. Might be the last ones that did that.
-
No not really. Mostly a Tripod camera. You can carry 645, 6x6 cameras but I just don't thing they are a big enough jump in quality to justify them. Go big or stay home using MF. Now I have had a few Leicas but they are just so damn much money I don't really think they are even worth the effort. Just go buy a Nikon F5 or a EOS 1n and be happy if you want to do 35mm film. They are as good as it gets in the film era. Crazy good AF and metering. Go back and look at old 30, 40's B&W shots done on the old Press Cameras, God there is nothing better looking than 4x5 film. A lot the Hollywood Beauty shots of men and women were done with them. Just gorgeous stuff. Smooth as silk. You can't ever get that look shooting 35mm.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Mamiya RB67. It is a big Ox but if you are going to shoot MF, shoot 6x7. You have to crop the shit out of the Hasselblad 6x6 that you end up with only a 645 size which is not so hot. Why bother. Plus the view in the optical viewfinder, and even the pop up waist level finder is to die for. And you can print Really big with one. And the big bonus is they just about give away the bodies and the lenses. Cheap thrills. But they are not a speed demon. Hell just go out and buy a 4x5 view camera and get crazy good results. You really learn a lot about movements using them. Shoot B&W, that is where they excel. Toyo makes a beautiful full metal Field Camera that is a piece of art for not much moeny. I like Horseman ones also. I have owned at least 30 MF cameras easy, and 10 or more view cameras.. They are habit forming.

Might be the first of it's kind in a good way.

You can shoot photography for a F ing 100 years and it has shit to do with Video. Video is Hard Mode big time. It take 10 times the skill to do video as Photography. Anyone can take a decent photo now. Go on Flicker and see what 13 year old people do with a Smartphone. Hell that stuff is easy now. Auto everything, and it works damn well, amazingly well. Just writing a story that might last 4 minutes is a ball buster. Not many can even do that, let alone shoot the damn thing, light it, do the audio, and then get to edit and grade it. Good luck. Your thread is about what others do. I want to see what You can do. What I can do, others on here can do. I will post no more on it. Waste of my time .

I might not be what you Want to do but it is good experience learning the camera, getting muscle memory, and learning how to do it and what you need to do to get better. You should have shot 50 things with it not 3. If they suck that is a learning experience. You can't do this stuff by sitting on your butt, spending all day on here, you have to get out and do it over and over and over. Practice makes perfect as they say. You have to come up with your Own style, not looking at what others have done or do. It is what turns you on. We are Never going to make a Movie like Hollywood can. Why bother, sweating every detail, it will come to you if you have some talent. If you don't have the talent for it well you aren't alone.. So you don't think Casey Neistat has talent and no plan. He isn't a director. Hmm interesting. I guess he just pulls them out of his ass and doesn't edit, grade or nothing. Just shoots anything he sees and says the hell with it, like you think the guy above in the video does also. Just turn on the camera, shoot for like 15 minutes straight and put it in the can.
