Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
Thpriest replied to newfoundmass's topic in Cameras
How’s the Sigma 16-28? I’ve thought about getting for my video lens on the S5mk2. I shoot mainly 4k 50p at weddings so it’d be a 24-42 more or less which is fine for me as I prefer wider lenses for video. The Sigma 28-70 would be my photo lens on the S5 -

Just to add, I’m doing a small hybrid wedding today, S5 photos and S5mk2 for video. I think eventually I will buy a second hand GX80 with a 12mm for a general 4k lock off ceremony cam which is small to carry. I am going to invest in those flip up filter things. I have the Xuma magnetic things which work fine with one camera but now I have a harness with 2 cams the VND has been knocked off a couple of times as it hung by my side! -

I used to have a Nissan Serena with a bed in the back 2 rows. The best thing was it was discreet, it didn’t look like a campervan. Campervans are often targeted by thieves here in Spain. I need to check if I can get a mattress in the back of my Toyota Verso! I have to admire Mr. SMW. That’s a mad set up for one person! -

Which side flipping filters are you using? -
Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)

I'll be doing my 3rd hybrid wedding on Sunday but it'll be my first with the S5mk2. I don't over complicate things! If I have both cameras on me then the S5 is photo and the S5mk2 video. For ceremony, speeches (if there are any) and first dance the S5 will be locked off on a tripod and the S5mk2 will be hybrid. After using the S5mk2 for a couple of events I think it's going to make life quite a bit easier in a wedding scenario, mainly because of the AF and punch in to check focus when in manual. I'm enjoying the EVF, way better than the S5's. -

I guess one thing you'd gain with the newer S5mk2s and 2Xs is a lighter set up. That can be a big difference at a wedding. I've also noticed the AF is more reliable in Photo mode as well, it seems quicker and more accurate. -

I just sold my S1 and have bought a S5mk2 with a Sigma 28-70 f2.8. They have them as a pack here in Spain for 2590€. Pretty happy with the deal. Only had time to set up the camera a check a few things. But there are 2 things that I think I'm really going to like, the ability to punch in and check focus whilst filming and the EVF, which isn't as good as the S1's but it's way better than the S5's. I'll have to learn how to use the AF but so far it look pretty good. The lens looks great, nice and compact. I can see it being my main lens. If also means my back pack will weigh less as I'll use the 24-105 less and the S5 is a lot lighter than the S1. All good so far! -

How's the S5ii holding up on your wedding shoots? Are you enjoying using the camera and what you are getting out of it? Thanks! -
Sony lack of firmware updates is getting completely ridiculous!

Still no shutter angle? -
This has been my main problem with the S5. It's really difficult to see what you are doing.

Comparing the Canon EOS R7, R10, Fuji X-H2 & Panasonic S5 II
Thpriest replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
To be honest I'm not a pixel peeper but I value many posters' opinions here. For me Panasonics have other advantages like their ergonomics. It'll be interesting to see what you get told about the image-processing. The S5mk2 is on sale in Spain for 2,590€ with the Sigma 28-70 f2.8. There's also a 300€ cashback for trading in an old camera. I'll have to check if any camera will do (I have an old Lumix point and shoot). That's really good value especially once I discount the VAT. Canon and Sony are just way more expensive. -

I like the written blogs, there are not many like yours. They are often worth reading whereas the videos get drowned out in the Youtube torrent. There are some great options out there. I’m thinking of selling my S1, which I really like apart from the weight and AF, to get a S5mk2 for those very reasons. I really love my Panasonics, the only thing I have been missing was the AF (old eyes) and that seems to have been solved. I’ll keep my S5, even though I prefer the S1, as it makes more sense having 2 cameras the use the same batteries and cards. Friends have the Canon R6 and it’s a great camera too. The R6mk2 looks even better other than the price. The FX30 looks very interesting if you are only doing video although I can’t say I have enjoyed using Sonys. -

The same for me when doing video but...for workable AF I'd probably accept the side LCD as my eyes aren't getting any younger! -

I really think they should have put the S1H's or GH6's LCD on the S5 mk2X. -

Have you seen if the S5 mk2 has a faster write time to the cards? I much prefer a centred LCD for video. I don't ming the flip LCD for photos but it's uncomfortable for video shooting. -

I'm starting with hybrid weddings this year. Unlike you I come from a video background. I have the S1 and S5 and although they both produce the same excellent images, I find the S1 to be far better to use other than its weight. The EVF and LCD are very good which makes quick shooting much easier than on the S5. I find it to be faster when writing to the cards as well and the IBIS is better which is a real bonus in a wedding. What intrigues me about the S5 mk2 is that it has the AF for when it's needed, it has 2 UHS-II SD card slots (should mean faster write times when switching between photo and video), better EVF and LCD (and punch in to check focus) and last but not least, the realtime LUTS. I believe you could have the photos and the videos with the same look straight out of the camera which should great. Have you tried that? -

Did you get a S5 mk2? If so how are you finding it? -
I would have done the same.

Anyone got any examples comparing the S5 and S5ii in Natural, CineD etc to see the difference? The S1 and S5 have a great image even in lowlight. I’d hope the S5ii was the same. I don’t want to use Vlog all the time. -

The 1.8 primes are very good. I have the 24 and 50 and as far as I’m concerned they are the best af primes for video that I’ve ever had. You can control focus throw and speed and breathing is pretty well controlled. But we all have our own standards that we judge our gear by. -
How does the trade in work? Can you trade in any old camera?

Personally I’m not bothered about high frame rates. I’m all about ergonomics, image and reliability. The GH6’s LCD is a much better design giving much more flexibility. -

I think the only thing really missing is the GH6's LCD. I wish they had put that on the X version. I've never managed to get my S5 to overheat. I've left it for an hour in the sun (35 degrees more or less) filming a long wedding ceremony (1 hour) in 4K and it was fine. I'd imagine that the S5 mk2 will never ever overheat. -

Hi Dave, if you have Sigma lenses more AF tests with them. How good if AF locking onto one person in a group or scene with various people. How good is magnify to check focus while filming? (only Jordan from DP review has mentioned that I think). Let us know what firmware you are on! I think Panasonic should have made every reviewer stat exactly which firmware they are on as there seems to be some confusion there.
