Canon 9th July "Reimagine" event for EOS R5 and R6 unveiling
Trek of Joy replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Maybe I wasn't clear, I'm saying its not going to ship for weeks, so people can make a decision whether or not to keep an order based on reviews and downloading files to see if they're happy with the IQ and workflow and any dealbreaker gotchas. Sorry if that wasn't clear - I don't play the return window tester game, most of my gear is bought used anyway to avoid paying full price. Cheers Chris -

Its not shipping for a few weeks, there will be an avalanche of "reviews" dropping today and in the next few weeks that will make it pretty easy to sort through everything and find any dealbreaker warts. It won't be hard to download footage and photos to judge IQ yourself. Chris Same. -

If I buy from B&H in NY, I don't pay sales tax in FL or shipping unless I want it here in less than three days. So for me it'll be $3899 + overnight shipping! 🤣🤣 Wish there was a local shop I could buy from, but they're all gone. Chris -

The 20mp is the biggest thing that's giving me pause about the R6. I have 30, 36 and 42 between the EOS R and a couple generations of a7r's, 20 is a huge step back on the photo side. The difference from 24 to 42 with the a73 and a7r3 was tough to do when I shot both of them. Wonder why Canon is stuck on that one. Chris -

CR has US prices - I'm in on the R5 at $3899. I'll be shifting the remainder of my Sony gear and possibly pick up a R6 as well, unless they're complete turds. https://www.canonrumors.com/here-are-the-usd-prices-for-the-canon-eos-r5-canon-eos-r6-and-lenses/ Canon EOS R bodies to be announced tomorrow Canon EOS R5 $3899 Canon EOS R5 w/24-105mm f/4L IS USM $4999 Canon EOS R6 $2499 Canon EOS R6 w/24-105mm IS STM $2899 Canon EOS R6 w/24-105mm f/4L IS USM $3599 Canon RF lenses to be announced tomorrow Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM $599 Canon RF 100-500mm f/4-7.1L IS USM $2699 Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM $699 Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM $899 -

Canon is obviously going after enthusiasts/amateurs with these new lenses, smaller, lighter and cheaper outside of the 100-500. The first lenses were fast primes and the zoom trinity with the 28-70 halo zoom, the only budget lens was the 35 macro. People complained about the lack of a pro level body or budget lenses, now with the R5/R6 they have that base covered and a few cheaper primes. I'm sure their research shows a demand, otherwise why develop these lenses at all? IMO they will sell well, rumored price is about $1000 for each. There are plenty of people that want reach and aren't serious enough to pay $12,000 for a single lens. Lots of amateur birders and wildlife shooters, parents shooting kids sports and so on. Those long lenses combined with TC's the punch-in capability of 8k will turn the R5 into a telescope. I don't shoot wildlife enough to justify that kind of purchase, but I see a ton of birds, dolphins, gators and turtles while out shooting landscapes that a 70-200 with TC can't reach. I looked at renting in South Africa, but I didn't want to do a round trip to return it as I went from SA to Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Plus a 600mm would have doubled my pack size. So I find the small 600/800 lenses appealing, I bet lots will too. As always YMMV. Chris -

The shortcomings of m43 are the reason it gets less praise. You’re stuck with a couple mediocre sensors and shitty AF if you go Panasonic or mediocre video if you go Olympus, if that’s fine with you great, but they don’t work for me. Photos look no better than a RX100, too much noise and lacking in DR. Every time I see the 43rumors weekly roundup half the images look like phone shots. Those don’t work for what I get paid to do. I shoot FF for stills, to get the reach with with m43 I’d have to carry two kits. So yes this is a big deal. You get the best of both worlds, superior IQ and the reach, the difference between 40+mp and 20 is significant. And now it comes with crushing video specs that makes cine cams well over $10k look like a joke. If m43 works for you enjoy, It just doesn’t work for me. Cheers. chris -

From the full lens lineup image its definitely retractable. Given the body + lens weights I disagree about anything m43 being competitive, not with a 45-mp sensor behind the Canon lens, compared to 20mp max on m43, and the rumored high rez R body in the pipeline widens that gap even further. And these can take the 1.4x and 2x TC's that will be announced. Between the cropping ability and the TC's, this is an amazing amount of reach for such a small package. I spent a few months in Africa exploring wildlife parks, this would have been in my pack if available. Plus f/11 AF, the R5 will focus in much lower light. Personally I find the 100-500 with TC's more interesting. But a hand holdable 800mm lens, amazing. Chris -

He has the ability to compare it to other cameras like the 1dx3 and that Red he shoots everything on, so there's a chance for comparisons even if he's a Canon honk. Hopefully others with no ties to Canon will be able to access review units soon. I'm preordering while reserving my right to change when the a7s3 drops. But I still think the R5 is going to be the one for me. Chris -

I like most of the R's controls, but the R5 makes a few significant improvements. The joystick is most obvious. Glad they moved at AF button next to the joystick, its further to the right on the R's grip putting it in a very unnatural position. It also gets the 5d style wheel on the back instead of a 4-way D-pad button on the R. I like the extra button on the front too. I'd like to see the on/off switch on the shutter button like Sony's since I always flip the camera off when not in use to preserve batteries. I don't get the DSLR holdover "Rate" button either, hopefully it can be remapped to audio volume or something like that. Right now the touch bar is what I use for ISO with adapted EF lenses, on the RF lenses I use the control ring. On the R5 I'd just set it to the rear wheel. Chris -
Pretty amazing update. And without the year-long saga like the Z6. Looking forward to footage. Chris

Man the level of disappointment is going to be at an all-time high when the mythical a7s3 is released. A vague comment about things being new and unspecific stuff about raw to stoke the flames. Looks like 4k60p 10-bit internal with raw through HDMI like the Z6/S1h. It'll have Sony's new AF system, hopefully a flippy screen and a competent touchscreen like Canon's, and maybe dual UHS-II cards, but with Sony's recent track record I wouldn't bet on it. Sony fanboys keep calling the R5 a "paper camera" to try and downplay how they've done what Sony claims is coming - completely exceed expectations. Now something with no actual information gets people excited for something that's vaporware at this point. SMH. My expectations are low based on the last few years of Sony's 8-bit releases, shitty LCD's, UHS-1 slots in 42mp cameras that shoot 10fps, and more - so the new camera really doesn't have to offer much improvement in order to exceed expectations. They pushed all their chips onto the table with overpriced smaller sensor cameras featuring limited video specs and inferior AF compared to the competition at a time when video capabilities and sophisticated AF tracking are really driving forces in the market - and lost. The availability of cheap APS-c cameras from CaNikon and FF bodies at the $2000 price squeezed them from both ends, and the fact imaging was bleeding cash every year proved that. Of course they were big in the compact space and that market disappearing really stung them as well. Its really not surprising. IMO the m43 group was also betting on Canon or Nikon getting into the mix and bringing its user base into the fold, but that never happened. The lack of sensor advancement didn't do them any favors either, most of the last decade was just a single 16 or 20 mp sensor, not breaking away from Sony was a fatal flaw. In the end sensor and premium pricing worked against them when you can get APS-c/FF bodies and lenses for the same price. I've always wanted to see them make lenses for other mounts, I love Olympus' rendering. They could crush it as a third party lens manufacturer like Sigma. Sad to see this happen. They probably won't be the last. Chris

I plan to order the R5 as soon as its available. I shoot a lot of stills and I'm juggling a7r's and the EOS R (guess I'm hooked on R bodies LOL!) with the NinjaV. For me raw will be for shorter projects and postcard landscape shots (I shoot travel content for tourism marketing), otherwise 10-bit internal or into the Ninja for Prores is what I'm planning on doing. IBIS, 45mp stills, and the speed upgrades (12/20fps!) along with 4k 120p and all the other improvements *hopefully* means I can offload all my other cameras and consolidate to just the R5/R combo. I'm betting the R5's price will drop in the next year, so I'm just going to bite the bullet. Its expected to be in short supply for awhile and not ship until Sept. Fingers crossed I can get in on the first wave. Hopefully the R6 shipping sooner will slow the initial demand enough for me to get in the queue for the first run. I have the latest 15" i-9 MBP, which hasn't had any issues with 10-bit h265 or the giant 4k files from the R. But most of my stuff is 2 minutes or less. Macs are in a weird spot now too with the supposed switch from Intel to ARM, what's that going to mean for FCPx moving forward? As always YMMV. Chris

CR says the R5/R6 announcement is set for July 9. They're also dropping a slew of lenses. This looks like a great compact, but I would prefer a tad wider, the shuttered Nikon DL with the 18-50 equiv was a perfect solution for my needs, sadly it vaporized before being released. Not sure if any of the other RX100's have the new real time tracking, but that's a significant AF upgrade over the others without. The flippy screen and new AF make this a pretty appealing package for a small travel or b-roll cam. Chris

I genuinely can't believe people that got burned by the Hydrogen are lining up (and crazy excited judging by some comments on IG and elsewhere) to get the Komodo just because they're offering it at a $1000 discount for the suckers that paid for the Hydrogen. You even have Jarred is demo-ing a remote control app on an iPhone. Fool me once... Chri

Great take, the 1dx3 is an amazing package with its class leading spec, wish it was mirrorless and had a flippy screen and IBIS. People love to be on the bash Canon bandwagon, but the S1h can't do internal raw or competent AF. Its really an amazing achievement. RS is the big drawback to FF hybrids, I'm really curious what the R5 has in store as well. The a9 is the only FF sensor that basically eliminated RS, but Sony hit it with the cripple hammer from every direction on the video side - and their processors don't seem to cope with heat all that well. IMO that's why it doesn't have 4k60p. It would have made sense on that model since its positioned as a 1dx killer. But we do know the R5 does 20fps with the E-shutter like the a9 and the 8k is up to 30p. Rolling shutter shouldn't be any worse than the others that sit around 30ms, its more tolerable for me with a IBIS body. I shot plenty with the a6300 and its jello-vision, I'm really not worried about the R5 as much as some. Then there's price - but CR says it'll be below $4k. My credit card is waiting for the July announcement. Chris

This is pretty close to a full review, should be a blog post. Can't wait for the R5/R6 announcements in about a month as I'm not going back to a DSLR. Cheers Chris

I've never been a fan of rigs and monitors as well, but I just picked up a Ninja V to pair with the EOS R and I'm in the process of kitting it out with bits from Smallrig. Prores, 10-bit and false color for exposure (far better than zebras) are the main reasons for me. Looking forward to footage with the medium format speedbooster. Chris

The company I work with is going to supply me with a E2-S6 as soon as B&H fills the order. Given all the P4k/P6k chatter here, you'd think more would be high on the E2's. But the FB community is really robust - and forums like this are wilting because of Groups. So its no surprise. Chris
