  1. Anything DJI does will not have an impact on Nikon in any way, regardless of spec. The x7 in a regular body, even an cube like the Blackmagic Micro, would be competition for Blackmagic, Zcam and even Panasonic - but certainly not Nikon. They could make that space more interesting by providing another option, but I don't think they can even match the price/spec of the upcoming Blackmagic P4k, that's going to set the bar pretty high.
  2. Nikon Rumors posted a new image of the camera from the usual Chinese sites. Unknown if its a render or actual product image. They also posted some interesting numbers from Nikon's quarterly report. 570,000 ... ILC sales for the quarter 890,000 ... Lens sales for the quarter 10 million ... Total ILC forecast for the year, down from 11.5 9 million ... Total compact forecast for the year, which would make this year the first compacts sold less than ILC's Nikon is projecting lower imaging revenues for the year, but higher profits thanks to higher margin cameras like the d850 and the upcoming mirrorless. cheers Chris
  3. I think by the end of 2019 that will be the case, and about 10 of those will be from Nikon themselves. I bet we get the zoom trinity and a few more primes in addition to the 35/50 and the 24-70 at launch. Chris A number of them, including the 16-35/4. What does that have to do with a Nikon mirrorless?
  4. I genuinely don't know what you're talking about.
  5. Looks good, I really like the image from the GH5s. Have you used the focus wheel on the Ronin-s? I was really tempted by the Ronin features and what looks like the best app of any current gimbal, but decided to get a Moza Air instead, it just seemed to be overkill for a mirrorless camera. Chris
  6. So you're saying is your point is irrelevant? The subject of this thread will factor into said charts. I really don't know what you're trying to say. Cheers Chris Have you seen the Sigma/Tamron/Tokina DSLR lineup? Identical lenses with different mounts. It won't be any different with Nikon's upcoming mirrorless. The mount size doesn't change the sensor size or the image circle needed to cover the sensor.
  7. Sony would certainly leapfrog Nikon, but Canon? Maybe, maybe not. Canon has everything from Cinema cameras, to top end broadcast cameras (they were the camera of the Olympics) to cheap consumer camcorders - just like Sony. Chris That's true of all new cameras. Forums would exist if that wasn't the case.
  8. Canon has overtaken Olympus in mirrorless https://photorumors.com/2018/07/22/bcn-ranking-japan-canon-is-1-in-the-mirrorless-market-for-2018/
  9. Sony isn't going anywhere. That's not what I was talking about. Canon's annual report had them just below 50% market share, these numbers seem to jive with that. A couple years ago Olympus forecasted sales of 500k bodies in one of its reports for the following year. Given last years numbers of 11.7 million, that's just under 5%, which seem about right.
  10. Given the EF registry distance, that rumor makes no sense. Supposedly they have a number of prototypes, likely a EF mount is one for testing purposes, but a mirrorless body would be unnecessarily DSLR fat with an EF mount. If 3rd parties can make EF adapters that give native lens performance on a Sony body, I'm pretty sure Canon can do the same with it own system. Why does that matter? A vast majority of the buying public has no clue about rolling shutter, or what Slog is or how to use it.
  11. The timing makes a lot of sense for Nikon, what they're doing has zero to do with any Sony release given the fact product development cycles spans years. They pushed out the flagship DSLR d850 first, which for Nikon was the right move since the d800/810 was a little long in the tooth and there was obviously pent up demand for a new model. By all accounts its worked pretty well for them. They've also been restructuring the company, including manufacturing. They aren't trying to blow away Sony, they've said they're not going to rush into mirrorless until it fits what they're doing - presumably seamless integration of current lenses and a user experience that mirrors (pun intended) its DSLR success. IMO a major part of the focus (more puns) will be the AF, and the time they've taken in development was to get it right. Their initial efforts can't be like the original A7's, which had a number of significant issues. Rushing a half baked product to market would be more damaging than having nothing since there was no pressure from actual consumers for them to take mirrorless seriously. Their market share equals everyone else combined sans Canon, despite no mirrorless. Nikon currently has about twice the market share of Sony, and with Nikon now taking mirrorless seriously, they never will overtake them. Canon's looming high end mirrorless will put even more of a squeeze on Sony. I'm betting Sony's number dips in next years market share report. Chris
  12. At this price you're going to have to decide what shortcomings you can live with. I would say nothing in that range won't have some backlash, as others have mentioned its friction crap vs. a true fluid head. Manfrotto's stuff is rubbish below about $800 for the head alone (so is pretty much everything else). The E-Image from Ikan is just rebadged cheap Chinese generic heads you can get from Amazon for less. I'd spend some time on youtube watching reviews to find the best of the worst in that price range, and until then use the old rubber band trick to help with the backlash. Cheap heads also have a lot of stepping when tilting and panning at the same time. A video head is one of those areas where its difficult to find low cost/high performance gear. Chris
  13. Its pretty clear most camera/lens "leaks" are intentional, just a little guerrilla marketing to create buzz. Rumor sites + youtube talking heads = lots of free advertising and promotion, why not take advantage of that to spread the word? Chris
  14. New leaked images from a Chinese advert shoot with the Nikon mirrorless. I spy lots of controls and a top LCD. https://nikonrumors.com/2018/08/05/another-nikon-mirrorless-camera-picture-leaked.aspx/ Chris
  15. Nothing daft about it, no different than any DSLR, hold the camera with your left hand, push button, remove lens with right hand. For most right handed people, the twisting motion would be the part requiring more coordination and where you run the risk of dropping something since the camera is hanging by a strap. That's why CaNikon put the lens release where it is, because most of the world is right handed. This is literally the first time I've ever heard anyone say the lens release is on the wrong side of the camera. If that's a deal breaker, then pass on the camera. No big deal. Cheers Chris
  16. I'd say this is a good thing, that's a great camera in hand. Chris So Canon and Nikon have been doing it wrong all these years putting the lens release on the left? Given how tight the grip is on the a7's with fatter lenses, I wish Sony would put the lens release button on the left - like the vast majority of cameras sold today.
  17. Something I think is interesting that nobody seems to be talking about is the fact that 3rd party adapters will likely be available to adapt Canon DSLR lenses to Nikon are vice versa. I have no doubt CaNikon can pull off good adapters for their own systems - Nikon did it years ago with the 1 system and Canon has done it with the EOS-m - and I'm sure an adapter for a $3-4000 FF camera with as much riding on it as these releases have will be better. But it really opens up some interesting possibilities to mix in glass from the other side or tinker with a body that would be incompatible in DSLR-land. Chris
  18. I shot with one briefly not long after it was released, mostly to shoot some beach tourism stuff with the underrated A-mount 16-50/2.8 on one of the LAEA adapters. I used Glencarin's profile as well. For me its biggest issue was how easily it clipped the highlights, this meant heavy ND use since I mostly shoot outside in bright sunlight. The ND color cast was a PITA to remove (admittedly I'm not the best colorist), so was AVCHD on my Mac back then. Internal ND's would have made a huge difference. I think it was a step forward at the time being a large sensor cinema camera, but with fs700r's selling for $1500 or so, the fs100 feels really outdated by comparison these days. I've said for years I'd like to see something like the a6500 or even the fs700 sensor in a VG10/20/30 style small camcorder body to fill the gap between the a7 and the FS lines. The add-on XLR module would give you real audio. The new AF would be killer on a camcorder with a larger body to dissipate heat. But that will never be a reality. Side note, I got my mint fs100 from a wealthy guy in Miami for peanuts who just wanted to get rid of it. He was using it to shoot porn and bikini babe videos of his wife. He upgraded to a C300 to shoot them in 4k. We met at a cafe and he rolled up in a convertible Ferrari, he was an interesting character, it was straight out of Boogie Nights. Would love to be able to see what he's doing now. Chris
  19. That Mavic Pro loos like the drone that will finally bring together great IQ with portability, this will be my first real drone. Chris
  20. Interesting, that's a big lens to hang of the front of a single grip gimbal. I just scored a great deal on a mint Moza Air, the 16-35/4 and 28/2 and 85/1.8 will be my main lenses. This is my first gimbal since the disaster that was the Beholder DS1, so I'm a little hesitant. But I want to integrate one into my shooting and $300 isn't a bad starting point for me. The Ronin-S looks great with a killer app and great features, but the gimbal by itself will pretty much outweighs the Moza + camera/lens. Hopefully its a hit and they come out with a smaller/lighter version, call it the Ronin-SL. The 50/1.4 is big, you can always go with the 55/1.8 if you can live with the CA. The 35/2.8 is close to a pancake and really good. And early reports about the Sayang 24/2.8 look really good as well - and its tiny. Its also cheap. I love the 28/2 despite its faults. Chris
  21. I voted move to a sub forum, despite the obvious bias presented in the poll options. Lots of forums have places for political discussions since they always tend to get heated. The arguments always go in circles since an internet argument isn't going to change anyone's opinion. Its also clear from reading through some of the recent threads here and elsewhere, some people really don't know or understand American politics (especially on a state/local level which had a huge impact on recent elections), our economy and our history. As an American I fully support free speech. But I don't go to camera, Jeep, mountain bike, guitar and travel forums to read ill-informed political discussions. Chris
  22. This is cool, I've seen the repeatable movement mentioned in a few Ronin-S reviews and DJI's promo video, but this is the best example of it so far. Nice job. Just wish it weighed closer to the Crane or they do a lighter version, call it the Ronin-SL. Chris
  23. Search around, there are lots of good sites that review legacy lenses. Philip Reeve posts some pretty good reviews with the usual sharpness, sunstars, aberrations, and they focus on bokeh at various distances, showing a lot of the best/worst case scenarios with each lens. This is just one site, there are many others like the giant Zeiss C/Y thread on Reduser, Dyxum has a lot of the old Minolta stuff and so on. https://phillipreeve.net/blog/ Chris
