From the top of a 1d listed on ebay, you either haven't owned any Canon pro body or you didn't beat it up. Can you see the metal under the paint? All the swearing in the world doesn't change that fact. By your own definition, the body is clearly metal. SMH.
-
You do realize a lot of that metal is exposed and just painted black, right? In case you've never handled one, its not completely covered in plastic. So that would fit your definition of a body. As far as I know, there aren't many exposed bones on the human body. There are plastic bits tacked onto it, but its still the body, your responses are just some BS semantics "I'm right, you're wrong" game. I'll refrain from further comments on a BM P4k thread. Cheers

I never said it couldn't be done, and comparing a $300+ million jet that cost many, many billions to develop, or even supercars that see many millions and sometimes billions in development, to a $1300 camera is just plain silly. I'm saying the body - in my opinion - is where a delay might surface as opposed to a Sony sourced sensor. And those plastic fantastic cameras do break.
-
If that's really a Sony sensor, I doubt that's going to be the cause of any production issues. Now a carbon fiber body being mass produced to meet tolerances, proper lens mount alignments and such seems a little more dicey IMO. I get they wanted to save weight, but a more traditional magnesium skeleton seems like it would be a little more robust. I'm curious if there will be any flex with larger lenses.

RED delays in 2018: "Late and better is better than just late."
Trek of Joy replied to IronFilm's topic in Cameras
Only got about 10 pages into that thread, the brown nosing is otherworldly. People are talking about flying to LA for a phone demo event. For a phone?!?! Some are saying they're buying into Hydrogen early because of the discounts people got for upgrades to the original One camera, so they want to be the first to get benefits down the line. Doesn't anyone want to see the actual system before buying a bunch of ideas? And the gushing about how grateful they are for the delay because a supposed add-on is now integrated into the hardware. Are there any skeptics? Like maybe all the 4v crap didn't actually work with an attachment? This whole "we're getting a Gen2 phone at Gen1" is silly. Wonder what they'll say with the next delay? Then there's the group talking about how this is going to be their all-in-one stills/video system. SMH. Without seeing anything, no functioning hardware, no images, just a bunch of vaporware - many of which likely won't come to fruition over the next couple years when said phone will be obsolete or not selling in large enough numbers to be profitable. Its using standard phone camera modules, so its initial image won't be any better than any current high end phone. Everything beyond that will require pricey add-ons. I applaud them for trying to create a phone based ecosystem with greater capabilities - at least someone is thinking beyond the phone. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out though, selling small volume/high margin goods is vastly different from entering a low margin/crowded market against bigger players with much deeper pockets. Getting carrier certification is not getting said carriers to push your products. Phones are not sunglasses. All of this feels like something that will result in another one of Jim's "just being transparent" posts as he announces he's selling the Hydrogen intellectual property to a phone larger manufacturer for $2.5 billion dollars. I see a lot of "why didn't they have this at release" or "with Fuji you're buying a half-baked camera" comments across all forums. That's complete bunk. The XT2 was a great camera when I bought it shortly after release. It is much better than the a6300 it replaced. It got a Dpreview Gold award, and lots of praise from other reviewers that weren't on Fuji's dime. Fuji is never going to be cutting edge - especially on the video side. They've addressed bugs in a timely manner. Even without the feature updates its still a great camera. The fact that we're getting stuff like continued AF improvements, 120p and focus stacking without having to buy a new body like Sony is a bonus. Every camera I've owned in recent years had issues, including the Blackmagic Pocket, 5d2, 5d3, Samsung NX1, a7r2, a7s2 and XT2. Samsung fixed some of the problems and then abandoned the NX before sorting the obnoxious noise at 1600 and above. Blackmagic took too long to issue fixes so I sold it. Canon issued bug fixes and added 24p to the 5d2. Sony did a bug fix update on the a7's, but fixed everything else in the a7r3. Fuji has done the most, and its not close. You know damn well Sony could add PP's to the a9, improve the AF algorithms of all its cameras, or add features to its other cameras - but they do nothing except release new bodies. My a7r2 is now worth barely more than my XT2, despite costing twice as much. The continued refinement is one reason I'm in the Fuji camp. I buy what works for my needs, but its nice to have the camera get better over time. Chris

-1 for my reading comprehension. Oops.

I've preordered a number of things through B&H, they've never processed payment until they're getting ready to ship - unless you're using something like PayPal. From their site: "Customers with USA billing addresses will not be charged until the order is processed for shipping. However, a credit card authorization hold occurs at the time the order is placed. Credit card customers with non-USA billing addresses will be charged in full at the time of purchase."

The airbus a380 does the same thing with its windows - only it has wings and a full bar.

I think there will be one more FW update on the XT2 that will bring Eterna. The XH1 is too new to port it to other bodies. You can shoot Flog internal and use the Fuji Eterna LUT, which is the next best thing. The AF improvements and the stacking function are big improvements as well. I really wanted to see Sony allow FF/s35 mode to be assigned to a custom button on the a7r2 instead of having to go into the menus. They did - with the a7r3. They could really learn a lot from Fuji. I'm excited about this announcement as well, the original Pocket was a fun camera and the specs are really awesome on the BMP4k. But I'd like to see a functioning camera in use and the image it produces before ordering. If they haven't started producing them yet, there will certainly be teething issues with actual production samples. Its still weird they have a website full of photos of the P4k in use, but nothing actually shot by the camera itself. Chris

Another interesting announcement. SLR Magic full frame Cine lenses, priced like Veydras at $800 each. https://***URL removed***/news/3659685879/slr-magic-announces-new-microprime-cine-lenses-for-sony-e-mount "The new MicroPrime CINE lenses are designed for the Sony E-Mount, and there are five of them in all. The first four—a 25mm T1.5, 35mm T1.3, 50mm T1.2, and 75mm T1.5—will all be released in May, and a fifth 18mm T2.9 will be ready "by Q3 2018."

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see how a dual processor could make 4k60p happen, the sensor readout speed wouldn't change. As it stands there's already a crop and some pretty severe rolling shutter with the current 4k options. We'll need to see a new sensor with a faster readout speed for 4k60p.

I think a better way to pressure them is where you spend your money. Canon and Sony are clearly going to keep a pretty wide gap between their hybrids and their respective cinema lines. How long have people been banging on Canon here and elsewhere about its video - and their market share hasn't moved an inch? Panasonic has found a niche with the GH5 and video shooters, but they're still small potatoes overall and photographers are still buying CaNikon in far greater numbers. Probably not thinking about Blackmagic very much - if at all. The Pocket 4k (P4k) or the Zcam E2 is not going to sway anyone from buying a a7III or a Canon Rebel or anything with stills capabilities. I doubt it'll have any sort of an impact on Canon, Sony or Panasonic's respective cinema lines since they lack a viewfinder, ND's and any sort of competent AF (Canon) and so on. The previous $1000 Blackmagic cameras didn't put any pressure on the big players lower end models - none of them are offering raw and the GH5 is really the only one with 10-bit, these are just another budget option. I'm now looking at a P4k or the E2 as a video-only option instead of waiting for a used GH5s, but sales of both aren't going to push any of the big players to shift their philosophies.

Agreed. Specs look great, would like to see actual moving images before plunking down the card. Though that handheld shot on the quad is great. Nobody does promo photos better than Blackmagic. Nobody.

Bummed about the new SSD. Atomos got almost everything right with the Ninja V, not sure why they didn't opt for standard SSD's on the entry level model. When I saw $700 US, I was going to order. Now, not so sure.

18.96x10mm Its in the brochure.

Here's the full brochure with complete specs and dimensions.

I think its mis-named a bit. I get why they went with pocket, but it should be a Mini Cinema cam or something - unless someone has messenger bag sized pockets. @Djangosaid RIP GH5 - but its more like RIP GH5s IMO.

5" LCD - love it. I've been saying for a long time that a great way to separate from the pack is larger LCD's. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one. It looks like they combined the Video Assist with a 4/3 sensor in a GH5 body. Kudos to Blackmagic for another NAB showstopper. Hopefully it ships soon...

Great review, love the image from the Kinefinity. Chris

Sony FS5 II announced with 4K 120fps RAW recording at NAB 2018
Trek of Joy replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Agreed. Don't think we'll see 10-bit or 60p in the a7s3 - if Sony even decides to keep the a7s line alive. I can see them just doing new body/battery with the same old sensor - much like the a7r3. But anyone expecting a FF GH5 is going to be really disappointed. There's always the Z-cam E2.... -
I'm in the same boat, my frustration hit a tipping point after running a digital media lab for high school students with 24 workstations. We had a staff of 5 - one of which was a salary slot solely dedicated to computer maintenance. Literally every day we had issues with various components not talking to the software or just not working at all. I can't tell you how many times we had to re-download drivers for things like sound cards, and then with Windows updates you had compatibility issues with the Adobe suite and so on. Then there were viruses that come with students surfing the net, ugh. So when it came time to replace the lab computers I took a chance and bought iMac's instead. This was my first time using a Mac. Our tech had nothing to do after the switch, absolutely nothing, everything just hummed along without any hiccups. I had to rewrite her position because it put her out o a job. Time is money, and moving to Mac saved me a lot of cash. People say those issues are largely gone with Windows 10, but I was visiting my in-laws and my father-in-law can't get his Win10 machine to recognize one of his thumb drives - a drive he's been using to store his personal records. It opened fine on my MacBook. Go figure. A insignificant sample size of 1, but it brought back many memories of students struggling to get everything working as we were against the wall for film festival submissions. Never again. This too. After moving to FCPx my workflow has sped up considerably. The whole PC vs. Mac debate for me is so played. There's so much more to a computer than how much I can save with a similar PC spec. Being able to just work all the time is more valuable than saving a few hundred dollars on parts. I run a 5k iMac, pretty tough to get a 10-bit 5k monitor and a fast machine for less than what I paid for my computer. And its just a thing of beauty to cut through 4k prores file with no hiccups, no stuttering or any issues. Its been a revelation. Its not for everyone, and that's cool. I actually enjoy editing a lot more since I moved to Mac, FCPx is so much more efficient for me. As always, YMMV.
