    Just for @BTM_Pix, there are now pics floating around of a banner showing the new Atomos Ninja V - a 5", 1000nit, recorder/monitor that does 4k60p and Prores raw. I've held off on a external recorder because I want it to be somewhat future proof and do 60p, and the 7" screens are too big for my shooting style, but this might just fit the bill.
  2. Perhaps the delay on the new Mac Pro is because of the original question in this thread - a switch from Intel? The Prores raw announcement has many in the professional world pretty excited. I convert to prores before editing, its so much more fluid for my workflow. Its interesting to see comments about how Apple has ignored pro's, yet Prores is still a dominant codec in the professional realm. FCPx is used in many production houses, newsrooms and so on. Apple claims 2.5 million FCPx seats, so someone is buying it. It'll be interesting to see what happens to current apps if they do switch from Intel. Will FCPx require a rewrite that makes it incompatible with Intel machines?

  4. If memory serves, 2006 was the only year iPod revenue accounted for more than Macs. And the difference wasn't very significant. I believe it wasn't until 2009 that the iPhone took the #1 position in revenue. Now they are certainly a consumer electronics company, but your history is a little fuzzy. FCPx has been out a long time, and its seen comprehensive updates. LogicX seems to be doing fine. The trashcan Pro is a mistake they've acknowledged and they're developing its replacement. You say they're neglecting the professional world, but I can't think of another company that offers the level of hardware/software integration within the Apple ecosystem that's evolved over the last few years. Its not perfect, but its easy to see where they're going. Dumping Intel is a logical move toward more seamless vertical integration. Even if they shuttered FCPx today, I'd still use it over the clunky alternatives. The free updates over the years have been more than you get from from anyone else. And today we get ProRes raw. That's some pretty nice neglect. YMMV. chris

The Pro Workflow Team cited in that article is interesting - Apple has hired a bunch of creatives to put its hardware/software to work in real world production scenarios in order to see how various workflows are structured, and how they can design to make them more efficient. The eGPU with a MacBook Pro working on a 8k stream in real time was also really interesting. 8k editing, grading and effects on a MBP, nice. Chris

  7. Sounds awesome. The original looked pretty impressive judging by the clips posted here by @markr041 after the FW update. Pixel pitch is pretty close to the GH5s, I wonder if its the same sensor, just not multi aspect. Chris
  8. Canon just one-upped everyone with a 120mp sensor that shoots video. If 8k is 30-something mp, how many k's is a 120mp image? The math blows my mind. chris
  9. While I agree with your point about Panasonic being more accessible to the masses, that still doesn't make it any less true. This endless bullshit echo chamber about Canon being light years behind everyone else simply is not true. They're certainly innovating, they're just not pushing those innovations into the sub $2000 realm. This reminds me of a great quote from Bob Lutz - a longtime auto executive that's been near the top of Chrysler and GM back in the day - he basically said its easier to build something with few price restrictions compared to lower cost/high volume items. He's talking about McLaren's and Ferrarri's compared to the Corvette. Absolutely. But Canon being Canon - they will get a lot of ink when they finally do move into FF. Chris
  10. Awesome post with some great samples. Color is subjective, but I've always liked the color out of Fuji much better than Sony. Red always seems to be super hot or more orange on the a7r2 and a7s2 I shoot with. Plus there's the issue with blue highlights that pops up from time to time. I don't want to spend a lot of time trying to fix colors, I like to get them as close to the end product SOOC. The post calling Fuji pretty but not cinematic is just silly as its just an opinion. Eterna is a shining example of cinematic color. Classic Chrome and Pro Neg have been my go-to looks and Eterna looks much better. Looking forward to adding a XH1 to my kit. Cheers Chris
  11. I didn't watch TV 40 years ago, and I didn't say first VDSLR, I said 1080p, which Canon was first. The d90 is a 720p camera. Sony wasn't first with 4k in that space, and they still haven't done a 4k60p hybrid. So your "pit bull" doesn't seem to have much bite. Besides, Canon has been making video cameras for decades going way back into tape days, you do know that, right? I can't read your mind, so I have no clue what you're talking about and few forums are discussing Sony video cameras from the 80's or RCA tube TV cameras fro the 50's, because they're irrelevant to a discussion about a mirrorless hybrid camera in 2018.   12. Huh? This statement is just silly and ignores actual facts. I may be wrong, but wasn't Canon first with 1080p (5D2), first with 4k (1DC) and first with 4k60p (1DX2) in a stills/video hybrid? Plus they created arguably the best AF in the video realm with DPAF. And they have that Cinema line, which by all accounts is pretty successful. Video is obviously not the driving factor in DSLR/mirrorless camera sales, since Canon's market share almost equals the rest of the camera industry combined. The "Canon is doomed because they can't compete with Sony/Panasonic in the specs/hardware" echo chamber on this site and others is silly. Jesus, how long have people been calling Canon the next Kodak? SMH. Chris

    Huh? For a camera that was killed off years ago? Outside of a few video gear forums and Samsung's small remaining user base that would have an interest in a camera hack (a very small subset of actual users, much like Magic Lantern), this won't register at all. Even then few outside of current NX users will care. There are plenty of other options from systems that haven't been shuttered. The bitrate has been hacked for some time and that didn't have Samsung's mighty legal team descending upon hack users. The hyperbole and debate around this is comical. SMH. Chris
  16. Read this on the LR blog when it was posted. Impressive performance on m43 sensors - no surprise since that seems to be what they were designed for. They're still really good on APS-c, just not as good. Veydra did a nice job with them. Note the variance, no huge differences from copy to copy, unlike some that are shipping lenses with significant variances. Kudos to the small guys for doing a cracking job. These are companies I like to support. @jonpais Looks really good. Nice. Chris
  17. Both cameras have zooms as pictured - looks like the 16-55/2.8 and the 24-70GM - in the comments he says, "I did try my best to match them if you didn’t see the beginning section. Both are set to F4 and around 50mm full frame equiv." The larger sensor certainly shows its advantage in this video. Chris Forgot about the silent touch controls. That would be different. But you still have to move the mode dial from stills to video.
  18. Unfortunately that doesn't happen - at least with the XT2 (the XH1 shares the same controls), whatever your settings are, they carry over between stills and video modes. The ISO and SS control dials have to be moved to change settings. My solution is just just carry two actual cameras or to shoot with the top dial set to 'T' - so you can change SS with one of the control dials. You can scroll through them much faster using that method. For all of my frustrations with Sony, I can stab the record button at any time and start shooting video. If you're not shooting stills and video at the same time its less of a hassle. But I shoot for travel, so virtually everywhere I take a photo, I shoot some video as well.   19. These nonsensical analogies and most of this discussion is still based assumptions relating to what someone said. Nobody here knows what's possible with the hardware within the camera. He says they have the tech in the high end cameras like the 5d4, but nowhere does he say that same tech is in the m50. "With the EOS 5D Mark IV, we do offer 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus, so technically it is feasible. But given the position of the M50 in the lineup, we can’t include all of the features available in a product like the 5D IV. Given the position of the product, we wanted to achieve the optimal balance [of features] in a camera in that range. We’ve optimized the M50 as best we can [for its market position], and within those parameters, the combination of 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus was not possible." And he clearly states its about costs. "The cost required to introduce [features like 4K] into cameras dictates the kind of features that we can introduce [in products of different classes]." SMH.   20. The movie mode switch drives me nuts too. I would happily swap the exposure comp button for a record button. Or just a custom setting on the dial where you could have it all setup, flip the switch and you're in video mode, 4k with the 1/48 SS and so on. Looking forward to more tests. Chris

  23. I believe the only solution is what's in the previously posted video - change the date to force the pixel remapping in order to do it manually. To be fair, its only happened once on each body I've owned. As to the a7III, I can't speak to anything other than the way it looks on videos I've seen since the camera isn't available in the US yet. chris
