I agree that it would be nice to have additional tools but I have to say that I think that with Pocket 4K having false colour available (especially on a hardware switch) it will get a lot of people, myself included, closer to where they want the exposure to be a lot quicker. The very quick contextual overview it gives you works better - for me at least - than a waveform so I'm going to say that from a purely selfish point of view, BM chose the right option for the initial release

To load 33 point LUTs they have to be created in Resolve. For all other creation methods it will only load 17 point ones.

It is a nice idea but a couple of points.... I would be wary of putting anything that close to the exhaust vent on the front of the camera. In the video they describe leaving it on for 3 hours without it getting too hot but I suspect that didn't involve having the camera in record. The second point is that it for people who do want to go V mount then it actually has quite a low capacity (49Wh). The KYTD BP-90, for example is 190Wh and £160 on Amazon. For another £90 you can then use a rail mounted V mount kit like this one which adds all of those additional ports (and actually includes the correct dummy battery for the Pocket 4K !). The total cost will be more than the Core SWX Powerbase but it will be far more flexible in terms of how and where you mount it (horizontal or vertical) so you can keep it away from the exhaust, will let you swap out to different V mounts (or even run it using the £20 Sony F to V mount adapter plates) and will offer almost four times the capacity. That extra capacity can't be underestimated as it might not just be the camera you might be powering off the battery (powering an EVF/External recorder off the Dtap for example) so it means you'll also be able to run a system as a whole for far, far longer.

Sorry, your other posts didn't appear on my view (possibly as you are a new member I think so there is a delay) I've just had a look at both sites and its doing the same in terms of emptying the cart when you try to check out whether its the lens regain or ND version. However, on a hunch, on the European one I added one of their Amaran lights first, then added the ND (which is the only one in stock), then removed the light from the cart and it retained the ND in the cart when I went to the checkout as you can see here Try that in the US store as it might be worth a go. Other than that, try the contact page and message them about whats going on as it might just be a weird glitch (which it seems it could be judging by my basket trick).

Really enjoyable. I agree with you regarding the initial impression of the build quality. It is almost certainly more robust than it feels but I wouldn't fancy putting that to the test ! The buttons could have done with having a bit more travel or resistance (especially the Record button which on mine at least is so easily activated that it feels more like a touch sensor than a physical switch!) but, yes, I do think its a really nice layout too. The menu system is up there with the Leica T in terms of elegance and simplicity and it would be great in a future update if BM took a similar path as Leica with offering an option for a custom menu screen with just the functions you want from other menus.

Indeed ! I have the LensRegain version and at the price its at in the US Store (where it seems to be in stock) its worth paying the import duty for https://www.aputure.com/products/dec-lensregain?variant Hopefully it will come back in stock in the EU store. I might actually take a punt on the electronic ND version as well. Unfortunately, the REC button doesn't work on the BM camera though.

Just confirming it doesn't work with my Metabones T Ultra with touch AF or one shot AF. Tested with a range of Canon and Tamron lenses both EF and EF-S, none of which work either. Aperture control is fine and the IS is operative but not indicated in the camera. AF works fine on my GX80 obviously but also with my JVC LS300 so its not just a case of it only working on a "native" for want of a better word MFT camera. Considering there is no AF, anyone looking for a focus control option for Canon lenses might want to take a look at the Aputure DEC products as they are both on sale right now. There are two versions, one with a speed booster and the other with electronic ND. Both offer very nice focus wireless focus control with storable points as well as aperture control. If you go for the speed boosted option then obviously you can just use it as an adapter without the additional controllers and remote interface (the thing sticking out that looks like a PocketWizard flash receiver) to keep the form factor down. Absolute bargains at these newly reduced prices. Yes, its got a 4 stage indicator, which makes it 25% more accurate than the cameras 3 stage Full/Some/None indicating strategy

It arrives on Tuesday so I'll let you know. As I say, its only about a fiver more expensive than the dummy battery on its own ! The DC connector is very nice but with it being locked I would be concerned about giving it a knock not in terms of it falling out but in terms of it staying in and damaging the port. I think it would be nice if someone did a 3d printed extension housing for the port to feed the cables out of so if you weren't using a cage with a clamping mechanism you'd have some way of protecting it from a knock. Yep, that would be a very handy cable to have in the bag. Anything that lets you use a USB power bank is always a good option. Quite pragmatic solution as well to have the dual USB option if the emergency power pack you've just run into Primark to get doesn't output enough juice so you can run back in to buy another one to make up the difference.

Ah right. Sorry. I'm just going to use one of the small £10 SmallRig adapters from my BMPCC that take the Sony F batteries. Cheap and cheerful and mounts to anything (screw mount on the bottom and a velcro strap as well).
-
Its charge only through USB but its certainly a decent option to have if you are out as you can always find something or somewhere with a USB outlet to put a bit of juice in. I've ordered one of these until the BM cable pack is available. Its £35 which is not much more than the cost of the dummy battery thats included which, once you have that, there are obviously a lot of other options to power it off Sony batteries etc. I'm definitely looking forward to sporting the very fetching belt pack. http://amzn.eu/d/5OuA1wt

Its come a long way from the keepy uppy video thats for sure.

With regard to the batteries getting stuck, there have been a few reports on BMCUser of genuine Canon batteries getting stuck that turned out not to be genuine Canon batteries after all, including someone who bought 3 from a very well known camera store. As an FYI, someone there has posted this video about how to spot the difference between the genuine article and the very convincing fake ones.

They joined in 2013 http://www.photographydailynews.com/2013/01/kodak-end-black-magic-join-micro-four-third/ Hopefully as the cameras are out there in greater numbers they'll have more feedback to get a clearer picture (no pun intended) of which lenses are going to be problematic and where to go from there, even if it is just a directive of "Lens xyz is not recommended" etc. I think the most obvious ones are the wides but from my experience with native MFT lenses on the LS300 there may be a few surprises with other lenses in terms of edge performance if people are used to using them on GH5, GX80 etc The situation with adapted lenses looks like a different - and worse - sort of mess because of the number of variables involved with the different permutations of FF and APS-C lenses going on numerous different types of speed booster and I don't envy BM trying to test that.
-
With regard to the lens corrections..... I'm playing devil's advocate here because I haven't got native MFT lenses that would particularly cause a problem (aside from the cheap collapsible wide zoom in the picture above which is not a bad lens for the original pocket or a GX85 etc but which I know from the LS300 isn't exactly going to benefit from more sensor area to play in). But.... BM have let themselves in for a few problems when all of their literature features this : As I say, I'm purely playing devil's advocate here but I definitely think they will have to address it either with an update or at the very least a clear statement of which lenses will suffer. Fixing it in Resolve can't just be the panacea either when they are also promoting a straight out of camera workflow. "Interestingly" is one way of putting it. Frustrating would be another but I'll get there. Its interesting now having spent some time with it to work out what it does and doesn't need functionality wise. I think the physical interface its got is quite decent to be fair but it definitely needs a remote option. Why they took the LANC port off it so that people could at least start and stop a recording while its on a gimbal or a rig is a mystery to me. It would also help with the photo function, which I actually think is pretty decent but is compromised considerably by the shutter button being too recessed (at least on mine) which means you are inducing movement in the body when you press it which brings the obvious problem with its low shutter speed.

They are an existing product that they are re-purposing as a BM4K product by virtue of adding an LPE-6 dummy battery, hence why it has a less than aesthetically pleasing fit to the actual design of the camera It was warm enough for me to notice but short of saying "Ow fuck" when I touched it. But I wouldn't want to mount anything in the way though.

Absolutely !

I think for me its got enough off screen controls to be usable with a loupe but certainly a flip up loupe would solve it. Not that its a problem that should have needed solving to be honest. The justifications for some of this stuff being related to the price of the camera are a bit of a double edged sword in my opinion as lets go absolutely wild and say a tilting screen would have added £100 to the price of it, would anyone have baulked at a price of £1200 instead of £1100? I seriously doubt it, particularly as to correct the issue it causes is going to cost a lot more than £100 And its not like BM haven't got experience of how awkward it is shooting handheld with a camera that has a large fixed screen even when its on a rig. So to use this camera handheld you are going to have to have a rig of some sorts (and still have a strain because of the size of the screen affects the mounting position as in this pic and every other pic of someone using a BMCC without an EVF) or hope someone comes up with a 5" loupe. All for the sake of a tilting bracket and some cable that we all would have happily given them a tidy bit of profit on. In reality, this camera isn't a boosted up version of the original Pocket, its actually a slimmed down version of the Cinema Camera/Production Camera. The Canon DSLR battery grip modification was something that I was thinking about but the heat coming off the bottom if you don't have free space underneath it would concern me. I had it sat on my desk switched on for about 30 minutes yesterday and the area around the tripod mounting point was pretty hot to the touch.

It detects if a lens has it and switches it on automatically, though you can switch it off in the menu and you'll need it because..... The monitor. The issue with the monitor, for me, is the lack of a tilt as much as the quality of it. If you want to shoot handheld with it, its quite a lump to hold up and front of you at eye level and the bigger screen is actually a drawback here as you'll be holding it slightly further away. It means its not only uncomfortable but obviously inherently less stable. With a tilt mechanism on the screen, you'd be able to cradle it at least which would make it far more viable. I honestly do think that we will see a raft of 5" loupes appear on the market soon to address this as giving you that point of contact will make a huge difference. Its a bit of a perfect negative storm really of form factor, fixed screen and no IBIS but it is what it is and I'm sure workarounds will come but, for me at least, an EVF is going to be the way to go. It would be nice to actually have an option to switch the monitor off totally if you are using an EVF as its pretty superfluous at that point and anything that reduces power consumption and heat generation on this camera would be welcome.
-
Well, after finally putting a card in it and doing some shooting, my advice would be that if you venture outdoors with it, take an EVF or run the risk of having to buy a neck brace on the way home. On the upside if you get caught it in a downpour, put the camera in record for 5 minutes and you will have a very functional hand warmer and hairdryer combo.

Yes Although it would possibly be covered by the exceptions in Paragraph 23 where they would be considered "accessories" to a scene but it also covers clubs to use clearly identifiable images of people within the crowd. In my experience, of course, football fans in general don't exactly need much persuading to leap in front of a lens. I'm going to respectfully disagree and say that my view of it is that Brexit is the iceberg. And we are still sailing a course directly at it. In broad daylight. While pretending its a Fox's glacier mint.

In Germany, that is absolutely not the case and has been well defined in law for over a century. If someone is identifiable within the image then you absolutely need their consent to publish it whether that be in a gallery or social media. Technology makes the detection and prosecution of violations of that law much easier so this will have an impact when content distribution platforms are obliged to uphold it. https://www.goethe.de/en/kul/med/20849366.html
