  1. The angry fella does, to be fair, have good insights regarding Nikon lenses. And magnets. I always make a point of tuning to his fuming reactions after the married couple make one of their educational statement videos. In my imagination, they are the yuppy couple who've moved in next door to him and he's got a backyard full washing machines and Triumph moterbikes in various states of disassembly and in theirs they've got a hot tub and a mid life crisis Harley Davidson. They think he plays AC/DC as an act of aggression and he thinks they have their teeth whitened in an act of passive aggression.
  2. There's a whole new market for anamorphics now aimed at the taller Vloggers due to Instagram TV videos having to be in vertical mode
  3. The flip side of that though is that the people who do get it and don't want the traditional one will be prepared to pay for that style and you won't constantly be in a pricing war with other producers who make those traditional ones. Go your own way, make your own market and own it. You won't get every job but you'll get the jobs where people want what you are creating more than they want the lower price you are charging.
  4. Can't believe how much money those chancers must be making conning film makers for these festivals. So, I'm off to buy a projector, some garden chairs and a domain name and I'll be soon inviting entries for the Society of Cinematic Arts and Media Festival
  5. Congratulations ! We'll be expecting a full review obviously

    4DX Films

I got a PSVR after my arcade VR experiences and nearly wet myself playing Resident Evil on it. As have a lot of people

    4DX Films

That looks amazing. I played something similar (but less sophisticated) at Sega in Tokyo called Mortal Blitz. Never have I been so utterly convinced that I was fighting monsters on a space ship whilst actually in reality only walking around 50 square metres of grey carpet! Right at the end there is a section where you have to run across a narrow pipe to get to safety and whilst you should know full well that the drop into the abyss on either side of it poses no danger it doesn't stop you tip toeing across it like a cat. Its hilarious to watch other people play it after you've played it (its in an open space at the top of the arcade) and everyone does the same thing at the end ! We have a VR arcade here that is setup for multiplayer and they put each of you in a separate curtained off area that has the motion detectors to track your movement. The games themselves are probably not what you would class as AAA titles on a console but when you are in the moment playing with a few friends you are completely absorbed and it is a lot of (expensive) fun. I've mentioned before but there is a VR "cinema" that I went to in Amsterdam (basically just some headsets and swivel chairs) and I watched a couple of documentary shorts that it really did work very well for.

    4DX Films

There were times it felt like being on a ride (at the right times through chases and so on) but there was also a lot of subtlety going on as well with drone and crane shots. If its used to add these sorts of accents to "real" films as opposed to being shot from the get go as a 4DX thrill ride then its a great addition to the right film. And it has to be the right film, its not going to work on everything but for films where you've already signed up to leave any arthouse sensibilities at the door then you might as well go all in and get rained on as well ! I still keep coming back though to how interesting it might be to have 4DX re-releases of films like Saving Private Ryan where I think it would actually be incredible.
  9. Its based on the sensor spec (which is likely the same one as the GH5 based on different discussions) which can do 120fps at 1080 and that the software enables you to tweak binning and regions of interest and create your own capture resolutions as listed on the product link. You'd have to check with the manufacturer regarding the specifics of those settings but the software appears to support the creation of it. As this is only an example of such a product (there are a bunch of companies who make similar ones based on the same principle using the same or similar sensors) then if this one doesn't allow the exact resolution/fps combo that you need then I'm sure a more comprehensive dig around will find one that does. I had a look at the forum where astrophotographers are discussing it but I gave up after about 20 pages because, with all due respect to them, it was a bit of a dry read that makes train spotting seem like an extreme adrenaline sport in comparison
  10. And with the split screen function of the iPad you can have the F8n app and VLC open on the same screen to control the F8n and monitor the video
  11. I have an elderly Tascam HD-P2 that I bought at a 2nd hand computer fair for £50 off someone who wasn't really aware of what it was for the rare occasions I need timecode. On a day to day basis - particularly for my two main 2019 projects - I'd prefer the form factor more over the F8n as well as the price and, plus, the M version has the additional music recording functionality that I can find a use for. If I needed timecode then I'm not too bothered about using LTC and the subsequent track sacrifice. As I say though, all of this is predicated on if the MixPre6-M was available at an equivalent price to what it is in the US. As its not and is a virtually the same price as the F8n then it would be silly not to suck up the form factor aspect, take the extra tracks, timecode, look ahead limiters et al and get the Zoom. It being silly and me doing it anyway though is still not entirely out of the question
  12. It was about €950 when I last looked, so a bit cheaper than Thomman in Germany who are usually my reference point.
  13. Versus the real currency conversion of the BH price of it which is €770 Literally cheaper to get a flight to NY and buy one. Or two. I'll have the other one off you !
  14. I think if you are looking to evaluate a single lens solution for travelogue stuff then one good option is to look at what people are producing using the two high end fixed lens (predominantly) stills cameras that are often used for that purpose. The Leica Q is full frame and fixed 28mm and the Sony RX1R is full frame and fixed 35mm so provide a good comparison between two different focal lengths and how they actually translate in terms of travel photography/videography when you really do only have one lens. Flickr for the Leica Q https://www.flickr.com/groups/qleica/pool/ Flickr for the Sony RX1RII https://www.flickr.com/groups/sony-rx1r-ii/pool/ Its a tough call really because I can see the arguments for both. The main compromise route I suppose is that the 28mm can kind of be a 35mm in terms of FOV but the 35mm can never do the same trick but there's more to the look than the FOV.
  15. The 25% (at least) premium for SoundDevices stuff here in Europe is a real pain. For my needs, as timecode isn't a deal breaker, the new cheaper M version of the MixPre6 would be the sweet spot in terms of tracks, features and form factor if it was the dollar conversion price of £600. Unfortunately, though, its £800 by the time it reaches us. At which point the extra £100 for the F8n makes the weight and form factor something I'd probably turn a blind eye to
  16. OK, we'll push the boat out and have 2 big buttons. Though if you've ever been in a queue behind drunk people trying to order in a kebab shop on a Saturday night it's often a good idea to not offer them such a wide choice of options. Within the confines of having to use a GH5 for this project, the only way to change the frame rate remotely would be through file format change. It would be masked of course to the user and implemented by way of a hardware selector switch triggering the command. With the QR code they wouldn't have to. They just point their phone at it and it instigates the download automatically. If if was being used in a communal event context like a wedding or birthday party it would be more applicable to upload it to the event's own Facebook page or the new fangled Instagram TV. Though we'd have to rotate the booth to meet the vertical video requirement of the latter If I was making these hypothetical booths for a living rather than trying to figure out ways to shoehorn the functionality into a GH5 then I'd base them on something like this https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/product/asi294mc-color It's primarily designed for astrophotography but essentially it's a pretty familiar Sony MFT sensor in a box that can run up to 120fps and is operated and transfers over USB3. Cheaper, smaller and far far easier to implement as a solution than using a GH5
  17. Detecting the Start button is hit again before the timer expires is an easy logic to include in the script which would restart the process and do a remote delete of the camera file. Changing frame rate could be a toggle switch between two file formats but that would mean the camera would have to be wifi controlled as well as the card so would need a small router which is no big issue really. File can be auto uploaded to a website and the URL presented as a QR code on the display screen when the clip has been replayed so they can retrieve it. Simpler to implement then letting them enter an address and clears the booth faster for the next visitor. File would need to be transcoded though to keep space requirements down but can be script driven into ffmpeg or similar Thats probably a hack too far for me and the Pi
  18. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll be worse than Canon but better than RED or Arri
  19. I think this is a very salient point in that the only camera its realistically going to be a swap out replacement for is one of BM's own ones. Its a better Pocket (though not if you need the form factor) or BMCC but despite it having a stills button its still in the same ballpark of being a more specialist device.
  20. They're all shill accounts and its costing s much money for the pay per clicks so thats why I've had to cancel my Adobe subscription to pay for them
  21. I have never needed to use every last facet of Photoshop so I'm probably not best placed to do the full A/B comparison but I don't miss not having it at all (even after 20 years use!) if that's an indication. With regard to vectors (and I now have the Airplane "what's your vector Victor" scene playing in my head ?) that's not my area but a friend of mine switched to an open source package called Inkscape and seems to have lived to tell the tale. It's the one that usually comes up in any "Alternative to..." searches and there are quite a lot of A/B comparisons with Illustrator.
  22. The restricted smart mode is eye AF unless you have an A9, A7Riii or A7iii. It's only suitable for smaller (lighter) lenses due to the motors and it's never going to get anywhere near native AF or even in the same postal region so it isn't without it's limitations.
  23. Its a standalone app that is also available inside the regular one from what I can tell. Doing a bit more digging and it looks like you can upload landscape video but it will appear in the app vertically so you'll have to rotate the phone. This is from Later about it With Instagram being so adamant about it being for vertical video, it remains to be seen whether content formatted for it will get prioritised in their mysterious algorithms. Particularly when it comes to when the ad links are incorporated over time. They initially have different time limits for content dependent on the number of followers so maybe that also will be a way they force people into Anyway, for now, it looks like I can still produce my makeup tutorials in landscape for now then. Phew !
  24. Yep, as my MiniDisc collection will testify.
  25. Which is why I said it was a considered leap of faith. Even so, they don't have an unblemished record with new cameras so its still a risk.
