  1. I've liked clear zoom too on my Sony cameras, but the 1.4 extender function on the GH5 is 100% lossless. It's really like having an optically perfect tele-extender.
  2. Ah, you are right! I totally forgot that, but I guess it's because I've always used the AF/AE lock button for that one shot focusing and left the menu set at AFS.
  3. Jon, it was my understanding that regardless of how you set AF-C/AF-S, when shooting video, it defaults to AF-C. However using the AF/AE hold button (assuming you set it to AF), the AF will set itself on the subject once, and remain there. Of course I too could be confused.
  4. Bingo. You just can't go that with 24p. You can certainly do that with 60p. That would have looked like butter.

  6. I don't see it either! Between not knowing how people view these things, the monitors they use, calibrated and non-calibrated, the web browsers used (I see a huge difference between color rendition on my 5K IMac between Safari and Chrome), and who knows what other variables, good luck making comparisons. Someone posted how fleshtones were being pulled to magenta in one posted pix. Not on my IMac, fleshtones looked great. In other pix, one says fleshtones are great and someone else says they're terrible. It's almost becoming amusing to me. What's important to me, is thus far I'm liking the color I see on my GH5, but of course that's 'only' on a 75" UHD Sony or 65" OLED. . OK, granted I'm now only looking at this on an IPad, but I still don't see what you're talking about other than 'imperfections' in Jon's skin (don't feel badly Jon, we all have em'). I give up.
  7. I suspect, in most cases, it's simply people using the wrong AF mode or settings. But yeah, no AF, in any camera, is perfect.
  8. Actually AF done incorrectly is the word. He should have used central area focusing not face tracking. Most people are not having the failures Max is having.
  9. He said just what I did, center area is better than face tracking. I'm surprised Max didn't try that. As you can see in this test, he never had outright failures like Max had and nor did I. I think the AF is just fine. As with any camera I've owned, there's a time for AF, a time for AF lock and a time for MF. The GH5 gives you a lot of tools for AF, you just need to learn them.
  10. Very odd. I got my GH5 yesterday, and as usually happens whenever I get a new camera, it rained. So all my testing was indoors, as I went through the house with lights off and on, testing AF with a 14-140 lens. When the lights were off, it was fairly dark given the weather we had been having. I experienced nothing like what he did with the AF. I'm surprised he never tried a central zone for his AF mode as I did in my tests. Most often I was testing objects and not faces since my wife wasn't home, but I still would have used a center zone if I was only doing faces. I learned from my G85 that that's often more reliable than face tracking. I found the AF to be much improved over my G85 as well as my RX10iii and in the same ballpark as my now sold A6300. On another unrelated note, I watched his entire video and was trying to figure out why his split screen tests with the tele extender mode (as it was labeled) was less zoomed than the side without it. Unless I'm misinterpreting what he did, it looked to be mislabeled.

  13. Yes, Dual IS2 is the combination of IBIS+OIS in the lens. Some older lenses with firmware upgrades will support IS2. An example is the Panasonic 14-140.

  16. Stab, yes, you're largely correct. When you see the hand (sounds scary ;)), that is the IBIS, sensor-based system. If you couple that with a Panasonic OIS lens that is equipped to work with IBIS, then you get the IBIS2 and "DUAL 2" shows up in your VF/LCD. DUAL 2 is simply IBIS2...not sure why they don't call it that. Now adding e-stabilization is an additional electronic (not sensor-based stabilization) that lays over the IBIS. That's where the sensor cropping occurs. You'll have to see if the cropping vs the additional stabilization is worth it. At least as it's implemented in the G85, I don't see much of a difference with E-stabilization. The good thing is there's no IQ deterioration with it engaged.

To be honest, I haven't seen a significant difference between IBIS2 and then adding E-stabilization on top of that. It may work differently on the GH5.

When I've ordered newly released cameras from Best Buy, they too shipped the camera the night before the release date so as to arrive on the release date. B&H did not do that (and I ordered within 2 minutes of when it first went up for preorder at B&H).
  19. I've been watching it in 4K on DIRECTV. Their camera work is absolutely stunning. How they got some of the shots they did, is truly amazing. An incredibly enjoyable series.

  21. Actually most of the footage was shot on Red Epic Dragons @6K resolution. The series was broadcast (at least on Directv) in 4K and the Sony that was used was the A7Sii because of its 4K capabiliy. It does not appear the original A7S was used at all. The A7Sii was used for some of the 4K low light scenes. Interestingly they also used GoPro-style cameras.
  22. A very common sense evaluation to low light, IMO. Interestingly, to my eyes, the GH5 actually looked a bit cleaner at ISO 3200 & 6400 than the Sony. He also had an F2.8 on the GH5 and an F2 on the Sony. Beyond 6400, it was all A6300.

  24. The point is I don't think we're seeing anything that's the result of an in-camera breakdown of the codec. This looks entirely normal for anything that's showing a slightly different coloration as the result of a difference in lighting caused by shadows or reflections.
  25. How is that color bleed? Why do some magnify an image beyond what anyone would watch, see changes in a color because of either reflections or some part of the image is in shadows, and then blame it on the camera. Does anyone really think that their customers would actually notice this and blame it on the videographer or camera? I guess never having been a pixel peeper, I just don't think that way. If the image looks good the way I'd normally view it, I'm good to go. If the image begins to break down, magnifying it 3-5X greater or more than I'd ever view it, I really couldn't care less. There are times I think some just look for issues, real or imagined.
