  1. Yes good point, the original idea was to get lighter lol will look into the Canon 20mm, I used to be more of a 28mm guy aswell, but seem to find myself always wanting wider recently. Never browsed that store before thanks for the find!!!
  2. Retail price would be a catch, haven't seen a Voigt 28mm in years... Also looking at the 11-20 that looks like its a nifty walk around lens for S35 although its a bit pricer than the 11-16. On a side note its great to see the lens topic getting some love!
  3. Going to look into the 11-16, seen a few on eBay super cheap - almost worth a punt for the price alone! Yeah ive been looking for a few of the Voigts EF lenses for a while, they seem to be absolute murder to get in the UK, I suppose when people buy them they don't sell them?
  4. EF (or easily adaptable to) for the pocket 6k
  5. I have been on a bit of a wide angle kick recently, my sigma 18-35 is almost exclusively staying on the wide end of the range. i want to get a small and light prime for when I wanna be a little more nimble. Recently purchased the Zeiss Ze 25 F2 which is a phenomenal lens but not wide enough for the perspective I’m liking at the moment. Looking for something closer to the 16-21mm range, preferably manual focus but I can live without. Open to recommendations?
  6. Yeah possibly, to be honest I don't push the image around massively, in certain circumstances I can see how there might be a difference! I haven't used the A7s3 but I strongly doubt BM will make a FF sensor they've talked before about how difficult it is. Although I love the Pocket form factor, i'm probably in the minority, I put the battery grip on and treat it like a handheld camera. Id really like to see a Micro style camera I can see when it would be really useful! I'm interested to see if BM incorporate the 12k Sensor but limit it to different resolutions such as 8K in a smaller body that can't process 12k, it might make sense to start using there 'in house' sensors. Id like to test that out aswell to see how it handles! Totally agree at the same price the Komodo is a no brainer, a more reputable brand than ZCam. Not to downplay how good the Zcam's are I just personally feel more comfortable with a more established brand. Really cool to see more global shutter competitors though!
  7. I’m not sure you’d notice a huge difference between 12 and 16 bit (at least I don’t although my only experience is with the Raven) but 100% with you on the RS, it’s noticeable at certain times on the 6K, shooting in 5.7k improves it quite a bit but I usually stick to 6K anyway.
  8. Updated Komodo results due to error: R3D 12.5 ProRes 12.3
  9. https://www.cined.com/red-komodo-6k-lab-test-dynamic-range-and-latitude-test/ Official CineD numbers have come out regarding the dynamic range of the Komodo. Its interesting how much difference there is from R3D to ProRes. They measured R3D to have a full stop less dynamic range than Braw on the Pocket 6k, the ProRes on the Komodo however edges the Pocket by 0.3 stops. (My janky test wasn’t too far off. They also measured the Pocket 6K to have 1 stop more exposure latitude than the Komodo (8vs7) although they allocate dynamic range very differently with the 6k spending evenly and the Komodo strongly favouring the shadows. - Dynamic Range (SNR = 2) Pocket 6k Braw 11.8 ProRes 11.9 Komodo R3D 10.8 ProRes 12.2 - Latitude Pocket 6k 8 Stops (4 under, 4 over) Komodo 7 Stops (6 under, 1 over) It appears that if dynamic range and latitude is your primary concern than the Pocket 6k would be the camera to choose. Obviously the Komodo has the global shutter benefits and they both have different form factors and very different price points. Again, it would be great if all the camera manufacturers had a standardised system to measure dynamic range, reading the spec sheets is very misleading.
  10. Heres a 'music video'. I shot using the Blackmagic 6k. It was very low budget and shot adhering to local covid lockdown guidelines. Production We used a Sigma 18-35mm, everyone already knows how much of a great all round lens this is. I prefer shooting on wider lenses anyway, (25mm being my go to prime). I didn't really find myself wanting to swap lenses. Also used a Hoya ProND 6 Stop on some shots, this ND does show IR pollution. I wish I had a 3 stop aswell. (Ive since sold the Hoya and picked up Nisi IRND 3 & 6 stop filters. They are cheaper and better performing than the Hoya. We shot 6K Braw Q5 on to 2 128GB Cfast Cards. This codec is incredibly efficient we used about 450GB over 2 1/2 days. I didn't have the camera rigged at all, the camera was powered by LPE6 Batteries. The camera burns though them, I needed more than the 6 we had! The only item attached to the top of the camera was a wireless video transmitter. I aimed to expose 'correctly' at 400ISO. A majority of the shoot was overcast so the DR wasn't stressed much so I found that I was often 1 stop over. In the grade I pulled the exposure on most shots down at least a stop and sometimes as much as 2/3. I recommend underexposing this camera at least a stop anyway. Even exposing for 800 shows almost no noise especially in a 4k timeline. All the exteriors were lit naturally. occasionally using a bit of diffusion in close ups. I just tried to use the sun as backlight as often as possible. The interiors, we used the affordable Godox SL60 and a ring light for fill. We used a variety of grip equipment (Tripod, Glidecam, Handheld, Jib). Grade/Post I also graded the video on a baseline 2017 13inch MBP, we imported the timeline from premier and used the camera originals. I shot to a Kodak 2383 LUT in camera but decided to grade from scratch. Gen5 colour Science in resolve is a treat to use. It reacts incredibly naturally to contrast a saturation changes. Skintones (with tint set to 0 in the raw tab) are very natural and lifelike. On a sidenote: Gen 5 Ext Video and Video gammas are totally usable now, much more than the Gun 4 versions. Other than basic adjustments, I just adjusted the hue of greens to remove IR in shots we used ND. I also added a subtle glow to the highlights and DaVinci's built in film grain. I set exposure for each clip using the exposure slider in the raw tab and the false colour effect on a timeline node, it really helped with matching shots when the lighting was constantly changing over the 3 shoot days. I am still shocked by the image coming out of the 6k, it has huge dynamic range, beautiful colour science and can be pushed and pulled more than you would ever without breaking. The extra resolution meant we didn't have to rent a dolly/silder on some shots and allowed us to crop and reframe in post without degrading IQ.
  11. You can get variable IRND right? I really don't use them to be honest, was an issue with my old non IR VND!
  12. I wouldn't call it a hidden cost, your gonna need NDs with any camera that doesn't have them internally. Its just about getting the best ones for the camera!
  13. 100% go CFast, it's so much less hassle and you don't have to worry about bad cables or securing the cable/damaging the port. Even with Tilta's screw in cables, I had 2 break on me in a year. 2 128GBs shooting 6K Q5 get me through a day of shooting. Search the used market for approved media easy enough to get great deals nowadays. You'll want an IRND on the Pockets, I got significant IR pollution with the Tiffen VND. Currently using Hoya ProNDs the IR is correctable but still apparent. Nisi make affordable circular IRNDs, I haven't tried them but they review well. Id go for the 3 and 6 Stop. If your only shooting 4K ProRes i've used Sandisk Extreme Pro SD cards that worked flawlessly!
  14. I can speak on BM Pocket cameras reliability! ive had two 4Ks and two 6Ks. my first unit of both had to be replaced (4K for power issues) (6K for dead pixels on monitor). Both the replacement units however have been rock solid, never had an issue with them. I think its more of a case that some units are bad but when you get a good one it's reliable. I would buy from a reputable reseller and open a ticket with BM if you have any issues with your unit. I may be outspoken but I don't think the camera doesn't really need to be rigged. Ive shot documentary style films just using LPE6 and Cfast cards. You will need a fair few batteries though. Braw Q5 is surprising efficient on card space btw. Ive been considering the battery grip for when I need longer than 45m continuous. If you are using the 4k I would skip the speed booster and just use native lenses.
  15. I’m would also prefer my camera to not have IBIS but it’s not a massive dealbreaker if it has it.
  16. Id love to hear your thoughts on the Voigt, ive been eyeing up the 40mm & 28mm EF pancakes as travel lenses on the P6k
  17. Totally agree, you can get decent images now by just using the Contrast and Saturation slider. I usually colour manage but for people who like grading from scratch, it feels much more natural! Im really hoping they update the cameras to gen5
  18. Yeah I was subtly trying to make that point. The other 3 I mentioned overstated between 1.2-2 stops, Red does by over 4+ stops.
  19. I completely agree! Nowadays any modern camera have much more than you need.
  20. Thanks for your thoughts! I wouldn't take the curves on those charts as accurate, I just brought the 1st stop on the Komodo to match the Pocket to demonstrate the difference accurately. I also wouldn't go as far as a full stop improvement but you could totally argue more than the 0.4 I suggest, I chose to side with caution because the Komodo seems noisier. But again, these charts aren't 100% accurate, Im sure that when someone more knowledgeable than me gets to testing we will get better results.
  21. Wow what a lens... and what a review. Thats some quality content right there. If I was still shooting M43, the voigts would be very tempting!
  22. I found a Xyla chart test of the Komodo on the FB user group. Thought i'd download the R3D and put it in a timeline to compare against Cinema 5D's test of the Pocket 6K. I'm no expert, and obviously these tests came from different sources, but it gives a fairly accurate result of what to expect. Id like to get hold of the BRAW still to compare them slightly more closely. Left is Pocket 6K. Right is Komodo. Cinema 5D rated the Pocket 6K at 11.8. (Blackmagic Claim 13) I would put Komodo at 12.2 (Approx) (RED claim 16.5+) Cinema 5D rated the S1H as 12.7 (Panasonic claim 14) Gerald Undone rated the A7s iii as 13.0 (Sony claim 15)
  23. I much prefer not having IBIS in a camera. It actively turns me away from a purchase. If i'm going to shoot handheld, its because I want the shot to be handheld and have the associated movement. On to the Komodo. It's actually a camera that somewhat tempts me. To me the main selling point of this camera is the GS. Motion on the camera looks great. I also like the form factor, It would be cool to have a EVF that makes use of the top monitor. It looks very well built too. Red IQ isn't much of an upgrade on the competition. Red DR is very similar to cameras like the S1H & P6K, just measured differently. Colour science is very subjective but in a properly colour managed workflow it doesn't matter to much. The main things that turn me off the camera are: the slow boot time, menus and UI no 6K 50p. I think the RF mount was a good choice, it seems a lot of the competition don't have access to the mount. If I had a Komodo, I'd have my fingers crossed that the Zeiss release the Loxia lineup in RF mount.
  24. The Micro is really due an update. Especially with the Z-Cam/Komodo using the same form factor and being quite popular. It would make sense that they use their new sensor technology in upcoming cameras. I read somewhere that a MFT crop of that 12K sensor is 8K. It would be cool if they could use the full S35 12K sensor but limited to 8k full sensor recording.
  25. I hope not, id much prefer the 6k sensor in the micro body.
