Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
Mark Romero 2 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yeah, I think there was just so much pressure / expectation that Nikon would make a camera that would be a grand slam and record 10-bit 4K 60p internally, that maybe the fact that it is the most affordable full frame 4K 10-bit camera was lost on people (like me). -

He makes a good point in the video. If you compare it to other cameras delivering FF 10-bit 4K, then the Z6 is cheap. Very cheap. (Meaning, inexpensive, not poor quality). My hope / dream / fantasy is that it will have all the dynamic range and color science the D750 had when shooting flat and nice 4K and great 1080p when shooting 8-bit internal. -

Well... it was only "backlight" if the photographer chose that particular angle to shoot from. I could be wrong, but I thought the way sony set it up that the photographers there could shoot from pretty much anywhere... and as Jim Kasson explains, it is really only in certain situations with it being more prominent with certain lenses. But the people who have gone to both Sony and Nikon events claim that the Sony events are better set up than the Nikon ones. Should that fact influence anyone's decision to buy one camera over another??? No, not at all. -

Since I spend a LOT of time on Sony forums on dpreview, with all due respect to @Django I will answer that with a "no." The only things people shooting with Sony still complain about are ergonomics and lens selections. Sony Techno Geek Extraordinaire Jim Kasson has looked into the striping issue pretty extensively and come up with some observations that are well worth reading if one is concerned about this. His findings were that the a7 III had striping as bad as the a9, and noted that despite the a9 and a7 III having similar striping, no one complains about the striping on the a9. He did find that the a7R III has less striping of the third-generation cameras. https://blog.kasson.com/a7riii/sony-a7iii-pdaf-striping-faqs/ Personally, I am starting to warm up a little bit more to the idea of buying a Z6 as a hybrid camera. If I could rig out the Z6, adapter, Ninja V, and a UWA Lens on to a Ronin S with handles or a Ronin M, and if it provides a killer image with plenty of dynamic range in an easy-to-work-with egg nog... I mean N-Log, then I think it will be worth the weight / hassle / expense I guess. I still find Nikon colors the best... just personal prejudice I guess, and the highlight rolloff has so far looked pretty good as well. -

The lenses look pretty good to me so far. I don't know if I would pay $600 for an f/1.8 though... and I don't know many photographers who would, either, considering that there still seem to be some wrinkles in the (pre-production) version of the AF. Yeah, some video people would pay that and consider it a bargain, but realistically, I think Nikon is still going to rely on stills shooters to carry them through financially, with hybrid / video-oriented shooters pulling in a distant second. -

Thanks, wasn't until this morning I realized that they were talking about the Z7 and not the Z6. Let me just state one thing : I want the Z6 to be AMAZING!!! Yeah, I currently shoot with Sony, but would have little problem switching (back) to Nikon if it is great for my needs. Heck, it would probably impress my clients more (they still look at my Sony cameras kind of funny). I am concerned though that since MOST PEOPLE are going to be looking at the Z series as a stills camera first and foremost (and a video camera second), if the stills performance is lacking, Nikon might not experience the success they had anticipated, which MIGHT lead to them not putting as much R&D in to the Z series cameras. Of course, the big caveat with all this is "pre-production model," so maybe when it is finalized Nikon will have a pair of KILLER hybrid cameras on their hands, and there will be much rejoicing. So I am definitely rooting for Nikon, both for the Z6 and Z7, but also rooting that there is a new D760 in the works that will have oversampled 4K, great DR, two card slots, great 1080p, great AF, great high ISO... basically the same as D750 but with 4K, IBIS, and great AF in liveview. -

And of course, someone had to take a crap in the punch bowl... For those of you who want a summary of the video: Lackluster autofocus No Eye Autofocus Lackluster metering Lackluster IBIS with adapted lenses "Sony-Style" mushy buttons 1080p 120fps only in DX crop mode??? Laggy EVF (for stills) Wondering if that guy who bought my D750 off craigslist will sell it back to me... ? -

Arrgghh... Not having internal Egg Nog available is really a turnoff since I would be using on a one-hand gimbal. Hoping the Flat profile will be close to SLOG at least. Glad to hear about that. In the real world - for me, at least - my Sony a6300 and a6500 batteries lasted significantly longer than the batteries in my D750, since I shoot with LiveView / LCD 97% of the time. I could take about 450 stills with my D750 while I was up around close to 550 with my Sony bodies. -
Thanks for posting. Looks good. Like the highlight rolloff and the skin tones. The slow mo shots looked pretty clean, too.
-
Yikes... $600 for a 50mm f/1.8 !?!?!? That would be like Sony selling a 55 f/1.8 for $900 ? Not to rag on it, but if only it offered 4K 60p... or 10-bit internal... that would (for me) push it over the edge (Hoping that Nikon's new Egg Nog has as much dynamic range as SLOG and isn't as brittle). As a card-carrying Sony Fanboy / Butt Hurt Videographer I can at least rejoice that their might be a slew of barely used a7 III's appearing on ebay soon. ?
-
Any idea then whether it is supposed to be overexposed like SLOG???
-
LOL!!! Fair enough. Thank you for posting these.

The XH-1 looks great, but it might be above your budget, and people say that you kind of need the grip. I am seriously contemplating it, but there are a few issues: Would you use auto ISO??? I have heard that when using auto ISO, that it is "stepped" instead of smooth. From what I have seen of the a7 III auto ISO, it is very smooth. And yes, I know you aren't going to get an a7 III, but I am just saying... Also, double check that the XH-1 has zebras. I don't think the Tech Art Pro (TAP) is going to work particularly well with the a6000 (most AF adapters require at least an a6300 or a third-generation full frame sony to work well). Going with a metabones IV and your canon glass would also probably need an a6300 / a6500 to get really good performance. The 1080p on the a6000 is nice, and by using the creative styles like neutral or portrait or autumn leaves and turning saturation and contrast down you can get some pretty decent footage.
-
Yeah, I like your footage. It is looking good. I like the video you did with the magenta corrections. If you have a chance though to play around, could you maybe try shooting in Neutral (or Portrait) creative style with the picture profiles off, and then just reduce saturation and contrast (and sharpness) to something like -2, -2, -2 ??? If you have nothing better to do That would be nice. If you want to upload to dropbox or something, that would be great. Anything with a lot of DR would be awesome!!!
-
Basically, lots of color fringing, bad skin tones, bad highlight rolloff, and noise. He said that the best way to salvage the footage was to crush the blacks (helps with color fringing and shifts), but that reduces the DR. Is it just because he is using a blue light in the background and we know the issues that Sony cameras have with blue light??? I will say in the samples he posted the hihglight rollofff looks a lot better than it does on my a6500. Yeah, I don't know who expected 15 stops of DR. And he is comparing the a7 III to a $20K Red Helium (as well as a $6K 1 DX II)
-
Um... yikes. Suddenly am a lot more interested in the new Nikon mirrorless than I thought I would be...
-
Yeah... well... no one has ever accused me of being a mental giant. And I thought the money would go toward buying an a7 III or a Z6 / Z7 or a Canon whatever.
-
Looks good. Just sold my D750 last night ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Try this when shooting S-LOG 3 on Sony cameras
Mark Romero 2 replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Agree that I probably wouldn't use SLOG for such an overcast scene. -
Yeah, it's a pretty good photography camera. And hard to say no if you have nikon glass already.
-
I am just dipping my toes in to RCM. It does seem like it would be a big benefit.

Thank you. I just remembered that SLOG on the a7S is minnimum ISO 3200. Considering that there is no S-Gamut3.Cine on the a7, is it just best to avoid SLOG as much as possible? And which version of EOSHD Pro Color is best for the a7S? Is it version 3? I ask because I have already purchased ProColor 2. But if version3 is that much better, then I would get version 3. Thanks in advance.
