If we are both thinking of the same video (the one from Japan) then the saddest part was that the autofocus tests were shot at 60fps / 1/100th shutter speed, and in a high-contrast profile, which normally is the BEST case situation for Panasonic Autofocus. Which means that autofocus when shooting V-LOG at 24 / 25 / 30fps is going to be... not good...
-
Yeah, there is a sale on the Panasonic S5 where it is $2,200 and it includes both the 20-60 kit lens AND the 85mm f/1.8 lens. So even at $2,200 it seems the GH6 is going to be a tough sell.

I wish I could disagree with you. But I can't.

Personally, I don't find CONTINUOUS autofocus to be usable when shooting video. However, I usually shoot at 30fps in V-LOG, and that is where continuous autofocus struggles the most. If you shoot in 60fps (which is only aps-c crop on the S1 / S5 series of cameras, not full frame), AND you shoot in a more contrasty picture profile (standard, natural, 709Like), then the continuous autofocus is better. Please note that I only have one L-Mount lens: the 24-105 f/4 It is a good lens but probably the Panasonic prime lenses would focus better. Also, Sigma lenses are notoriously WORSE for autofocus on Panasonic L-Mount bodies.

You never used the old Sony menus, huh?

Looking at Sony ZV E10 as a hands-off b-cam for S1H. Any thoughts?

Soooo... are you saying i should keep my Sony a6500 (Sony 8-bit aps-c, no HLG profile, but Cine 1 through Cine 4 as well as Slog-2 and all it's rainbow of skin tones glory) for using on a gimbal when I need autofocus??? I really dislike the colors out of sony, but worried that my E-M1 MK II isn't going to hold up in the low light of shooting weddings. And, as you know, Panasonic autofocus... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
I will be the first to admit that I am a dynamic range junkie. I can't get enough of it. (Hence, why I went from Sony aps-c to Panasonic Full Frame). I am really, really looking forward to seeing some / any dynamic range and low light video tests. In particular, what the 4K 60p DR and Latitude is going to be like. Having said that, I will probably just end up buying an a7 IV ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, that is never a bad thing.

Thanks for the elaboration. I'm a bit confused here (nothing new, really). So in the GH5, if you shoot in HLG, you usually use a CST with Rec2100 to 709 transform? Or you are setting the color space in Resolve to rec2100 in settings and then output color space to 709? I guess part of my confusion was that I thought HLG WAS a standard, but it was limited to certain TVs. Is that not the case? I guess I thought this because I thought I remember saying that you could use HLG and then just plug the SD card in to some of their TVs and watch things in HDR easily. So is HLG more like a "knock off" of something like rec2020 / rec2100???

Thanks for posting the link. Gonna pour myself a beverage and watch it. Watched the DP review video on the OM-1 earlier and it seemed like Chris and Jordan were pretty underwhelmed by it. 4K 60p 10-bit internal is nice, but that is just kind of keeping pace with what has become pretty standard now. Guess the color space is bt.2020 so I guess you need to use a Color Space Transform (or maybe ACES???) until there is a new LUT for it. At least that explains the weird green color for their previous video of the Sigma 10mm lens.

Well, that would be interesting.

Hmmm... you got me thinking... There are several Chinese manufacturers making m43 lenses at affordable prices, right? So, even if OM Solutions / Panasonic decide to exit the market, maybe some Chinese manufacturers will enter in their places. So, it wouldn't be great, but at least I think that m43 would live on. But as long as smartphone tech keeps getting better and better, so the tech in m43 needs to keep outpacing it, otherwise their just won't be a need for it.

Thank you for that clarification (and yoiur other elaborations). I had thought it was ME who had messed up the focusing parameters somehow as I kept searching for the 9-point AF area in video. Ans since the Oly menus are still mysterious to me, I was driving myself going in circles through the menu.

I think that is the situation but don't want to swear by it.

Just to add a historical footnote... The E-M1 MK II actually DIDN'T have PDAF in video until firmware 3.0, which was two-and-a-half years AFTER the release of the camera (E-M1 MK II was released in 2016, Firmware 3.0 released June 18, 2019). That also means the firmware was available only AFTER the GH5 had been available for two years and a couple of months. And I am with you in that I wasn't sure Olympus still even made cameras until I saw that @Dave Maze video, too. There are a few things that drive me mad with my E-M1 MK II, such as the fact that LOG and Flat Profiles are ONLY available in 24fps DCI (not in 23.978fps, nor in UHD 16:9), and you have to do a bit of menu diving to get in to those picture profiles. On the other hand, for non-log, using the Natural profile with reduced contrast, sharpness and saturation is really nice as long as the dynamic range isn't overwhelming.

I think you know a lot. For most hybrid shooters, an a7 IV at $2,500 is going to be a lot more appealing than an m43 camera at around $2,500 unless the GH6 is absolutely freakin' bananas.
-
I'm a bit concerned that both the Wow! Camera and the GH6 are going to underwhelm us all. Has either Panasonic or OM solutions had any ground-breaking patents registered lately? Have they had any major tech acquisitions lately? I am sure the GH6 is going to be a very nice camera, but when you can buy an S5 used for like $1,500 or new with all sorts of accessories / a lens on sale for around $1,800 then I think it is going to be some tough sledding for the "around $2,500" GH6.

Interesting specs. Sean Robinson and Matt Frazer of Panasonic / Lumix have said that the reason that the S1 / S5 cameras only deliver 4K 60p in 10-bit 4:2:0 (instead of 10-bit 4:2:0) is because computers don't (normally) handle it natively when in h.265 codec, so I guess either the OM-1 will have in in h.264 codec, or the rumors are mistaken, or they expect people will be fine with a performance hit. (alternatively, now maybe enough hardware has native decode of h.265 10-bit 4:2:2???) I am assuming that 120fps 12-bit RAw has to be 1080p... What I would really hope for is simplified menu system (compared to me E-M1 MK II) and the ability to shoot all-i no matter whether shooting 24, 23.98, or 29.97fps, and be able to shoot LOG or flat at any frame rate and 16:9 aspect ratio (instead of having LOG and Flat only available at 24fps DCI)

Similar to @MrSMW I use a Godox AD200 (or an AD360) for off camera flash. Probably for on-camera flash I would use one of the Godox flash guns as well. They are good and "pretty durable" (I have managed to kill a few though since I am not particularly careful with my equipment). Generally, Godox designates the flash guns that are compatible with the Panasonic S5 / S1 with the letter "O" for Olympus, since Panasonic and Olympus cameras use the same flash communication protocol (as far as I know). Do note that the S1 has a flash sync speed of 1/320th BEFORE going in to High Speed Sync (HSS), but it only does that with certain Profoto flash guns, which are way above MY budget. And finally, for the Godox options, the on-camera flash guns that take AA batteries are fine for light duty work, but for serious work, I do strongly suggest the ones with LiON batteries. The recycle time is faster and they just take a lot more shots. The problem is if you lose a battery (or forgot the battery at home), you can't just pop down to your local grocery store and pick up a replacement battery (the way you could with a flash gun that uses AA batteries). Likewise, if the battery fails (or the charger dies), then you will have to order a new battery / charger online .

Thanks for the link. Oh boy, doesn't sound like the R6 is gonna work for me. Looking like it's gonna have to be S1 and S5 plus a follow focus until there is an update to the Panasonic bodies. Hopefully the GH6 will blow us all away and they will put some of the mojo in to the Full Frame bodies.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thanks for the heads up. Can you elaborate further on what you disliked about it for video use? For real estate videos I am shooting mostly at 4K 60fps and as you know, the S5 / S1 have a crop, so I am using an aps-c lens, the Canon EF 10-18 STM. So the appeal of an R6 would be being able to shoot at 4K 60fps in full frame mode. Sadly, the a7 IV has a crop at 4K 60fps (although I guess the rolling shutter is better than at 4K 30fps). From what I hear, most Canon lenses mounted on the newer Sony models (a7 III and a7 IV, newer, like a7 C, a7S III, a7R III or IV) focus quite well in AF-C with either the metabones adapter or the Sigma MC-11. Of course, if the GH6 comes out and has they are using a new sensor with great low light / dynamic range and good autofocus, then I will just get one of those instead. The chances of that are pretty darn low though.

Yeah, been looking at getting either a Canon or a Sony to add to my collection just for the AF on a gimbal. Need to look in to it more though since there are a lot of boxes checked by the S5 that are un-checked by the R6 or the a7 IV.
