I didn't know if there was a way for the processor to do it computationally and then apply it to the recorded image.

There really are so many tiny things they got right that make this such an ideal camera. And the AF looks much improved. I still think it hurts the GH6's chances of gaining wide acceptance in a market that has declared continuous auto focus in video is one of the most important features. Is it impossible to do DfD without the pulsing back and forth? Because even if they could just eliminate that, they'd go a LONG way with their critics when it comes to AF.

It really doesn't have to be done that way. When you're worried about releasing your video the second the embargo is lifted more than putting out an informative/better video, that's a problem. Others released this morning and afternoon, like Dan Watson. I've defended Gerald a lot here, so I'm not just a hater or just bashing him because it's the cool thing to do. I've wondered about that, and also whether that might be something they can do over USB-C. The processor is obviously very powerful, so it makes me wonder if they plan to further maximize its usage over time. Yeah, I mean if you're that disinterested and dismissive maybe just don't review it at all? How did the Northrups give it a fairer shake, when they've been proclaiming M43 is dead for months, than Gerald?! They compared it favorably to the Canon R6 and are considering switching to it over the R6.

This not being a Sony sensor is very interesting, and perhaps a good sign moving forward not just for Panasonic but the industry as a whole. It's not good for the industry for everyone to get their sensors from the same company, especially when that company is also a competitor. I'm not as knowledgeable about sensors as a lot of folks are, but could it possibly be Samsung? Or is that dumb/unlikely?

He seemed like he'd rather be doing anything but making a video about the GH6. I stopped watching after a couple minutes, and probably should've stopped after he complained about having to get the video out at 8PM instead of taking his time and putting more thought into it. I used to really enjoy his videos but he doesn't really seem to enjoy doing them anymore. I think people really only need to watch the Media Division and the Three Blind Men And An Elephant (Hugh is wonderful) videos.

It's a solid release, but I really, really think the AF will hinder its success.

Excellent post, thanks for sharing. I've decided that I'm going to stick with the GH5 for a few more years, but I'm very much watching these cameras to buy in a few years when they're available on the used market. I've always wanted a Canon cinema camera, but the stabilization was always something that made it a bad fit for me. I also still have a problem giving Canon my business given their business practices. The FX3 is probably the best fit, but I don't know... Sony footage just doesn't do it for me. I wish Panasonic could figure out the AF. Not because it's important to me, but because I think it's a key to their survival.

Other than lashing out, did he ever actually go into detail and show his receipts re: Gerald, etc? He seemed to imply that he had some but didn't share anything specific, from what I can tell? I very much sympathize with him over the abuse he has received, but I hate when people drag others into the mud but don't ever go into detail and share evidence. All we've got is vague accusations, but nothing concrete, which doesn't really give us any info, and doesn't give the person they're targeting a chance to defend themselves.

ProRes in an ILC with these features is absolutely a big deal for a lot of people, as it's a standard in production houses all over the world. You're underselling it as a feature.
-
I'm not one of them, and will likely be replacing my G85 and GX85 to get two more GH5 bodies given the used prices for the GH5 are pretty good right now, but I know quite a few people that will get this because of ProRes alone. If the auto focus doesn't hunt and is accurate (it doesn't even need to be as fast as Sony or Canon, imo, it just needs to be accurate) this will be a great camera. Is it a revolutionary update? No. But it's a respectable one. And while you can point to Blackmagic and ZCam, ultimately this is a camera that takes many of those camera's strengths while adding world class IBIS, better AF, and better ergonomics (at least compared to Blackmagic's offerings in that price range.) I do, however, think they'd be smart to price it at $2000 instead of $2500. And AF needs to be substantially better, otherwise there's a lot of people that won't even consider it. While it's not something I NEED, it's what the market wants right now, right or wrong. Panasonic puts out great cameras and virtually everyone that uses one has a great experience, but perception is a big deal and the perception that the AF is bad is a major negative.

I've never used a gh5 for my sports work and thought "this rolling shutter is so bad." If no rolling shutter is one of its big selling points, then I can't say I'm be impressed. Rolling shutter is another one of those things that the viewer doesn't notice. DfD with genuine AI has potential, but we'll have to see it in real usage and what AI actually means in this context. People are dead set on PDAF, and I get it, but I don't know that there's anything stopping DfD from being as good as PDAF with the right processing. If you remove the pulsating, which has gotten better in the most recent releases, and increase its accuracy, you should be capable right? I've decided to stick with M43 for a couple more years, but don't see myself buying a GH6. I think I'll end up snagging up two used GH5 bodies and selling my G85 and GX85 so that all 3 of my cameras will be the same.

The sad reality is none of this is shocking, and could be seen coming for years. That most YouTubers and reviewers are enthusiasts at heart and never intended to be impartial, they were easy pickings for these brands. It's almost comical how little it costs to do, too. Before to market your product you'd have to spend millions to advertise. Now all you have to do is email a 100 YouTubers, send them free stuff, and then watch them shill the products. The real brilliance is all the other YouTubers that then will follow their lead without even getting the products for free because 1. They want those hits, too. 2. They too want to get the attention of these companies and get free stuff, so they too shill in hopes of one day getting one of those emails. And all these companies had to do was pay for postage and the production cost of whatever product they're sending. Even when they were flying people out to exotic locations for camera announcements, it was a drop in the bucket compared to what they used to have to spend. These companies will continue to try and co-opt anyone they can. All we can do is hope that those that have ethics will continue to do things the right way.

Knowing someone and being friends with someone are two completely different things. But if you run into someone you know at the grocery store, or somewhere else, it's pretty common to be friendly, say hello and ask how their family is doing even if you're not particularly close to the person. It's just how things are in small towns like mine where you've known these people your entire life. It doesn't stop some of them from being absolutely awful on social media, saying something disrespectful and then being friendly to you like nothing happened when you see them out and about in town. These people think they can behave a certain way online without repercussions. It's awful. Telling them to fuck off is being too kind for a lot of people's behavior online.
-
Yeah, I'll see someone I know say something incredibly disrespectful to me because we disagree on politics, but then when I see them at the grocery store it's all smiles and asking how my family is doing, etc. When I tell them to fuck off (quite literally) they act shocked and confused. I don't mean to paint all older folks with the same brush, but people that didn't use the internet much all the sudden became super connected once smart phones took over the market and immediately became the shittiest users on the internet. Now your 60 year old aunt spends most of her day shit posting and making casual racist comments on Facebook but wonders why things are now awkward with you on holidays.
-
Yeah, social media has become such a detriment to society at this point. I'm constantly blown away seeing adults, some in their 50s and 60s, acting like children and reveling in their ignorance. It's frustrating and depressing all at once.

The lack of ibis really hurts this.

It's what people know / started with, I think. I know so many people who don't even consider trying out other brands. It's strange.

Sony cancel production of A7C, A6600 and a professional camcorder
newfoundmass replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Sony seems to be doing this in quite a few areas, including their Playstation business. They've slowed down / stopped production of PS4 controllers due to shortages, for example. You can't find them in stores here, and they're sold out on Amazon and Walmart. Seems like they're redirecting their resources into their most valuable products, at least for now. -
Just some public support to a member of this community...

I'm so sorry for your loss @Danilo Del Tufo -
It really depends on how much you're looking to spend. I've used a Zoom H1 into a camera before, and currently use two Tascam TM-2X into my GH5 and G85 for sporting events where I want crowd noise. Both those two are pretty budget friendly and are "good enough" though I'd love to eventually upgrade. I've heard good things about the Sennheiser MKE 440 and is probably what I'll end up upgrading to. Audio Technica also has the AT8022 and the more expensive BP4025 but there aren't a ton of reviews out there for them.

I'm still unsure what you were expecting him to do with a shot like that? I'd kinda understand if you were criticizing him for not getting a better shot, but as far as a grade for that specific shot I'm not sure what else he could do to it. As stated, it's Alberta in late November on a cloudy, gray day. Where I live it's pretty much like that too, from November until April or May. This just seems petty.

Blackmagic Design URSA Broadcast G2 Camera announced $3995
newfoundmass replied to majoraxis's topic in Cameras
If they were THAT concerned with segmentation they wouldn't release a camera that can double as a cine camera, including RAW.
