Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
newfoundmass replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
On paid jobs I use both slots to record things just in case I have a card failure. It hasn't happened yet, thankfully, but I'm terrified that the day I don't do it will be the day it happens! -
Yeah, between the crappy IBIS and the wobbling in the corners... ?

Z-CAM quietly announce 8k and 6k FULL FRAME cameras - no joke!

I'd be miffed if I purchased something without knowing I'd have to pay for a firmware update, as opposed to an increase in price for a camera I hadn't purchased yet. -
Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera

The crop in 4K doesn't bother me that much because there's probably a legitimate reason for it since they're doing full frame 6K. Unless there's some reason I'm missing. ProRes is also not something I was expecting. Besides the costs of licensing it, I don't know that your Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. want to give Apple control over such an important aspect of their cameras (codec.) It would be nice as a feature though for those that want it, of course. The ability to record to an external SSD drive would've been wonderful though. The ability to record an entire day of lectures without needing to change cards multiple times would've been a game changer for me. -
They should've removed 24p.
-
I can't continue this discussion, you're giving me a head ache. Canon didn't negotiate a cheaper license by promising not to use 24p. It didn't. There's not even anecdotal evidence to support such a ridiculous theory. End of story. Canon should just remove all manual modes on their cameras next, since most casual users don't shoot in anything but auto mode anyways!

I'd prefer SSD recording over Cfast and XQD personally. It's more affordable and has multiple uses for me, whereas cards don't. Once the prices drop I'm sure I'll feel differently. I wish Panasonic had unlocked recording to an SSD personally. -
So Canon is in such a dire position that they need to shave a few pennies off a license agreement that every other manufacturer, including the lowest of low end action cameras, can afford? Is that what we're saying?

Canon launches the EOS R, their flagship full frame mirrorless camera they've directly marketed to filmmakers. Within a year every camera Canon releases no longer has the frame rate that most filmmakers shoot. Which is more plausible: Canon removes the frame rate as a way to try and move that market towards their more expensive, new offering. OR Canon removed 24p because that feature, which they've included in sub-$200 consumer camcorders, was now just too costly to implement in $800+ cameras. As a reminder, this is CANON we're talking about.
-
Correct. It's all the same codec. Can't fathom living in a fantasy land where this ridiculous theory is more "reasonable and obvious" than Canon, I repeat CANON, intentionally crippling cameras.

The quality coming out of China keeps improving. I'm wondering if the price will go down as more companies manufacture these?

I don't understand how specs can be disappointing when there isn't a major camera company doing what the S1H can do in this price range? It's fine if it's not for you, but to act like this isn't a major release that raises the bar is just crazy. Every other company will have to match or beat the Panasonic. -
I think if the posts had more substance, as opposed to just spreading a rumor, there probably wouldn't be an issue. Add your own thoughts to things.

Given the frequency they release APSC cameras I don't think you can say they've given up on it. They've just stopped trying to innovate (or worse have hit a wall and can't innovate.) I saw people talking the a6600 up because it takes Z batteries and has a headphone jack. It feels like some have really set the bar low.
-
Yikes.
-
It doesn't, Makara is talking out of his butt. His argument makes literally no sense. There is none, he's making it all up. The idea that they removed 24p for financial reasons is laughable / completely nonsensical.

No one cares.

Sony is far from focusing solely on FF. They've released like 7 APSC cameras in the last 4 years it feels like. -

Saw an interview with a nice lady from Panasonic confirming its a different sensor than the S1. "Similar" but different. -

I don't need / want 6K right now, but everything else? Gimme! -

A camera that hasn't been announced, has no specs, etc. isn't a competitor. You need to actually exist in order to compete. When the A7Siii does exist then it'll factor into the conversation. -

No, thankfully! What's really strange is I rendered optimized media to try to see if that worked and there was literally no improvement! I've posted on the BMD boards, hopefully someone can help! This only seems to be an issue in multicam for me. When just playing the timeline it's silky smooth even with some graphic overlays and color tweaking. My laptop is 2 1/2 years old but should still be able to handle this, right?

If was a terrible idea to upgrade in the middle of an edit! ?
