  1. I prefer to buy camera bodies / Electronics new. The warranty guarantee, is what excites me, having said that i don't think i have ever had a warranty claim and i have never purchased an extended warranty. Usually i find most stuff, lasts way past the the extended period anyway, if looked after. Maybe i'm a bit precious about my gear. πŸ€” I have bought alot of lenses secondhand, mostly vintage m42 takumars and some fd lenses and a couple of later tokina's. The are also two new Olympus lenses in the m43 format. The price disparity between used older glass (off ebay) and newer glass is rapidly closing and older glass aint the bargain it used to be. Still i'm sure there is bargains around but their harder to find now. I did recently come unstuck with my s21 phone. while starting a petrol powered fire pump, the phone fell out of my shirt pocket and onto some grass. I thought, well at least it fell onto the grass and not the concrete pad, however when i inspected it i found the screen had cracked. It did have a half case, although it fell face down from less than three feet. I suspect the glass on these later models is not as thick as earlier models. I'm rather disappointed in the robustness of the samsung. I'm thinking when i can find a 512 gig iphone 13, i'll get one of those and give it a go. I will be adding some type of hard case to it as well. πŸ˜…

The road trip starts in about 30 hours. I have tinkered and played with my gear as much as i can. I think i'm mostly prepared, however time will tell. After 18 months of no work, had two or three days work each week for the last three weeks. Which has been a blessing as its allowed me to finally acquire a tripod. You have heard of peak oil ?. Well i give you peak cinema. Manfrotto tripod and manfrotto 503 fluid head, p4k, cage and rigging by smallrig and a t5 for storage, last is a cheap sunshade / matt box off ebay. I'm pretty happy how everything's come together over the last few weeks. Ready to give Steven Spielberg, a run for his money. 🀣 First impressions of the manfrotto is its quite sturdy / robust. Its tight, no play in it and surprisingly light. May end hanging a bag of something of the bottom of it to give it some weight. It seems to move smoothly, i have yet to try to video anything with it. Regardless its a vast improvement on the hand me down tripod from my brother. After learning how to balance cameras on the crane m2 gimbal, i have applied the same logic to balancing the p4k on the manfrotto. There may be some improvements to be made by watching some youtubes on cinema cameras / tripods. At the moment the camera doesn't immediately fall foward or backwards so i'm calling it a win.

Wouldn't have picked you for an ankle kinda guy, but each to their own. πŸ˜‰ Good to see someone is out and about. love the pics, and its interesting to see other places around the world. I dont have an osmo pocket. However i have setup the gopro 9 with a letus anamorphic on a crane m2 gimbal, to cover my anamorphic fetish. The letus vignettes on super view, so im stuck with the linear and narrow fov, which honestly doesn't bother me much as i never really liked the fisheye look anyway. I did have a couple of people come up and have a chat about the gopro9 at carnell raceway a couple of weeks ago, so i'd hardly call my setup unobtrusive. My brother and i start our own little holiday on Saturday morning about 5ish, 3 week 4wd road trip. One Simpson desert, 600 kilometers 1200 sand dunes. Uluru and usual places of interest, probably some out of the way places as well.
  4. God help us, if this site does go down. Your all responsible For me acquiring a bmp4k, lenses, and falling down the rabbit hole, that is anamorphics and film making in general. πŸ˜‰ Still i needed a hobby anyway, and it keeps the voices / noises in my head quieter. Eoshd is a great resource, it would be devastating to lose the site. Still your health has to come first. For me, eoshd is a great online niche camera forum/ resource. It is with some irony, that i find myself with a blog within a blog thats attracted nearly 50,000 views. weird eh ?. An analogy for you Eoshd is Kinda like England, a small island. Storms come, wave crash down, but after that, the sun comes out ( well i have heard the sun occasionally comes out 😎 ) and it all good. Be a shame to lose all that and just be left with the social influencers for er.... content.
  5. Almost pulled the pin on the iphone 13 pro yesterday, except for the fact, they only had 1 in 256gigs. I figure i'll need the 1 t iteration to give myself some space as unlike android they dont have a card slot. Which seems kinda limiting to me. Not had an apple before. Since i'm away for three weeks after next week and i doubt that i'll find a 1t version before that , i figure i'll let the dust settle abit, by the time i get back everything should a bit clearer and i'll either have saved some money by not getting it or i'll lash out on one.

I have to fess up. I stuffed up with my cheap acquisition of the 8 sin arri dovetail baseplate. So not such a cheap outcome as i would have liked. I bought a smallrig cage, the quick release plate and baseplate with the arri standard dovetail on the bottom. With my understanding of standards, i figured anything made to an arri dovetail standard would automatically fit any other arri standard dovetail. However this proves not to be the case between 8sin and smallrig at least. the smallrig dovetail has a huge metal block right in the middle of the dovetail plate. The 8sin dovetail doesn't clear that huge metal block. So er.. i quickly ordered the smallrig 8" dovetail plate. The smallrig dovetail is extra tall and does clear the block. i guess its smallrigs way of keeping everything in the family. Lesson learned.

So i have the gopro 9 setup with the letus anamorphic attached, timelapsing a sunset. I bought a 10 000 mah power bank to run longer timelapses with the gopro. A side door with accessories slot for the gopro 9 has been ordered to make things a bit more convenient. The first time i used the gopro9 letus anamorphic, was a sunset and i had some weird lens reflections/aberrations. I know with anamorphics , we embrace the character/faults, however they did look odd or too much for me anyway. I have since made a trip to carnell raceway and shot some footage with the same setup and i didn't notice anything untoward. I suspect it might be shooting into the light and the fact that the lens isn't flush to the letus anamorphic. i'm withholding judgement till after sunset. Once i can make a timelapse and inspect it i will consider my options. I am confident there is room on both the gopro lens housing and the back of the letus anamorphic to machine each a little thinner allowing the gopro lens to sit closer to the back of the letus anamorphic. Acetone also took the shine of the lens housing, not sure if that is part of the problem. A can of matt black should help fix that. Getting both parts apart again may be an issue, but i think some time soaking the lens housing in acetone will help with that, the trick will be keeping the acetone flush to the height of the lens housing.
  8. i did get a giggle out of this image... everyone caught up in their own little virtual world. Without a clue whats actually going on. Art imitating life or what ? πŸ€” i'm lucky, i'm heading away from civilization for three weeks. Otherwise i'd be hard pressed to keep my pants on, "metaphorically speaking of course 😳" However i'll be back in time to see it at the local cinema. With a large popcorn and frozen coke and a little red pill. I'm just praying, its not some kind of rehash/remake, fleece the public kinda sequel.

nice, does the freewell flare much ?
  10. its a great little action camera, however i can see gopro backing themselves into a corner with nowhere left to go at some point. As nice as the hypersmooth is, how many more iterations do we need? The 10 will have hypersmooth 4. I am probably the one in a hundred that uses a gopro, in some respects, the opposite way for what its intended. I think it depands on how gopro handles it. They could could easily implement it with a software switch and have the gopro operate normally with the default settings people are used to. It would require some youtube vids and some media releases to educate the masses to the added functionality. It would also allow the reviewer/ influencers a chance to earn their money for a change as well. πŸ™„ Still i think the gate is open, the horse will bolt and gopro will miss an opportunity. Maybe we'll all be surprised, who knows what sort of beast we will end up with. But i'm not holding my breath.
  11. 4k 120fps sounds good and a new processor should help things along. It will be interesting to see how it develops. Personally i'm probably spoiled by having the p4k, however all my searching seems to indicate that the 9 is still 8 bit. Perhaps i'm wrong feel free to correct me if thats true. If the 10 isn't 10 bit or higher with some type of "braw" or log file, then i feel like i'm being cheated, it is 2021 after all. I know i can use protunes and turn the sharpness down, and shoot flat, but that's still not any "real" type of log file. Pretty sure my drone has d log at least and that's a year or two old. I presume that gopro are targeting a market. the ones that want to press a button and record something and for that, it does a fairly good job. Myself i'd like to see the gopro grow a little, have a few more professional options. If the 10 had to grow a little bit to allow 10 bit and or log i'd be happy with that.

Did a timelapse of a sunset a couple of nights ago. Gopro 9 used. Created in resolve, i used jpegs for a quick turn around. I do like the flicker reduction tool in resolve seems to do an admirable job. It does get a bit noisy on dusk that could be jpegs's or my iso settings, something to check. I did take raw photos as well and after watching a few youtubes i have worked out how to convert raw gopro images to adobes dng. So the next timelapse should be a step up in quality. Next sunset i do, will have the letus anamorphic lens attached to the gopro and probably 4k.

Round two, did go to the selleys power grip. Perhaps the application of acetone and combination of me restraining myself from touching it for 12 hours and leaving next to the slow combustion stove overnight seemed to do the trick. The anamorphic does vignette on the wide setting. Using it in the narrow and linear setting is fine. On wide it doesn't look so bad but once you take a photo or video it shows quite alot of vignetting.

Don't worry the p4k has been getting some love too. bought a cheap shade box that fits on the 15mm rails. Also purchased the smallrig cage and the associated base clamp with the arri dovetail which lead to more expense with a second hand 8sin 5 inch dovetail from b&h photo in the good ol usa. hopefully it turns up before i head off. One last purchase was a large plastic hard case. I plan to dig some large cavernous holes in the foam to sit the p4k in as well as a few other bits and pieces.

Ok round 1, did not go to selleys powergrip, better than superglue. If you believe the hype. Made a bit of a mess actually, took some acetone and rag to both the letus anamorphic and gopro lens mount. Not sure what the lens housing is made of, however acetone does take the shine of it somewhat. Round two will be to leave it next to the stove overnight in the hopes heat may help it adhere properly failing that I'll buy some 2 part epoxy in town tomorrow .

Quick update, got the gopro lens housing sorted and the letus anamorphic is milled down till it fits. Not pretty, but it works. Now for some epoxy.
  17. I apologize for my lateness been away attending a school reunion The stereo effect is pretty cool i have the nikon cool scan iii. Is that what you have ? mine has the scsi port. some how when i moved here i lost the computer with the scsi card in it. so its been out of action for ten years or more. Been considering getting another card but probably need an old computer with windows 95 or similar as well i would think. got an order in for film at the local photo store, however he's having trouble getting film stock in of any description. Some nostalgia for the thread, my last film slr and one of the first digital cameras. Both cameras still work, well the last time i put batteries in them, they did anyway. The nikon been modified . I took out the hot mirror/glass and put some normal glass in it. its now as inferred camera however the glass i used is too thin and it only focuses on flowers at the moment.

On bit of a crusade at the moment. Got a 3 week 4wd road trip coming up in a month with the brother. So playing with cameras and gear, finetuning everything for an easier time of it. Well thats the plan. Some time ago i had a bracket made up that has two 1/4 holes in it that match up with the handy little m2 crane i have. Revision 1.1 had one slot machined into each 1/4 inch bolt and a circlip attached. Now the 1/4 inch bolts live on the bracket and attaching the m2 to the bracket is reduced to minute. the bottom of bracket has two bolts through it, that connect to to a painters pole, which give me about 11 feet of reach. revision 1.2 will include machining a slot into the back face so that i can connect the usb and get a finger on the wide/tele button. As i didn't think that through as i should have πŸ™„

Took a different tack today. Broke out the x, y, bed for the drill press. Bolted the letus gopro anamorphic to it, and proceeded to mill away. The letus anamorphic is made for the gopro 3+ and 4. I'm attempting to drag it into 2021 and fit it to the gopro 9. lining everything up by eye, it seemed doable so i have milled the edges closer. I still need to take a little of the right hand side and radius the corners so that it fits the new, only used once lens housing πŸ˜‰. I should mention, i had two layers of masking tape on the front lens and one on the back to keep thing clean. Not sure if that glass is bullet proof, however it took a bunch of blows of increasing vigor to actually break it. there is a thin layer of some type of rubber cement holding the glass in and probably sealing it as well . Once the glass is broken it cleaned up pretty easily. Starting up the gopro and lining it all, again by eye, i get a slight vignette on super wide. Its clear with all the other lens settings. Since narrow and linear are my modes of choice, i should be ok i reckon. Once everything fits i'll mix up some 2 part epoxy and glue it to the 9 lens housing. I probably need to set up a jig of some sort, so the i can ensure the flares are horizontal before the glue hardens.

Nikons worst zoom lens. Part Two. Sorry for the click baaity title, just trying to fit in. πŸ˜‰ Here's a few images from this morning and late yesterday. A set of twins nearly a week old. Also a roll of chicken wire. there's a full picture and a 100% crop. This lens is definitely soft. I leave it up too your own judgement, whether its ok or not. On the upside it should take the edge off any digital sensor connected to it. Just trying to keep it positive πŸ€” I wonder with the 2x crop of the Olympus plus the 43-86 zoom and inherent softness if it is any good at portraiture ? or interviews perhaps? 86 mm is pretty close to the popular 85mm of portraiture lenses. Food for thought. Last photo is for the bokeh, With a f of 3.5 wide open its not the fastest out there, but i think it did ok. Theres about a meter of separation between the two fruit trees. Tomorrow i'll get a few photos with each of the lenses for some comparisons. May even get some footage with the p4k.

Ok, i really did buy nikons worst zoom, if the internet is to be believed . The original nikon 43-83mm f3.5 zoom serial no in the 580311. The originals ( Bad bad lenses πŸ™„ ) have all the info on the inside of the filter ring. The later corrected lens Have the info on the outside of the filter ring. Hadn't been able to replicate the lens flares, that i have seen online. Since price wise i thought it was cheap enough, i bought the original as well. i did take a few photos this afternoon, however the sun wasn't very obliging, so not much flare happening. I can see quite alot of internal reflections looking down the lens. So there is potential there i think. My last photo doesn't really do it alot of justice, the metal round the lens, looks pretty ordinary. The lens looks kinda sad as well, it is clean and mint looking.
  23. just the plain non L Version. As you have noted the L versions are fairly pricey. I think that for those sought of prices i could probably buy a new fast VoigtlΓ€nder in mft. Still its alot of money either way, for me anyway. The 1.4 certainly does alright. nice image. May i ask what your approach is to b&w conversion ?
  24. good luck, As you know covids playing silly buggers with states of aus at the moment πŸ™„ i have in mind, to buy a canon fd 50mm f1.2. keeping things vintage again. I'm after one fast lens, and i figure if i get an fd it will be a close enough match to my other fd's i have. I have looked at some fast 50's I thought of pentax as i have seven or so m42 takumars however alot of my searches seem to come up with either fungus of haze and still want to dollar. I think if i'm patient i might be able to come away with a canon $500 - 550 and postage on top. Then i'm going cold turkey on lenses, thats the plan anyway.
  25. I'm all set. gave the err... dusty but trusty gh1... a once over. ready to go πŸ˜‰
