  1. Focal reducers help. GH5S gets close to full frame with one. Its too bad the EOS R couldn't pull off a 1.3 crop. I guess we gotta keep in mind its their first mirrorless entry.
  2. You could have got away with something a lot wider imo without looking weird.
  3. You could use a wider lens to get a longer DOF while staying at 1.8 for low light. I've found full frame helpful when getting wider shots and still wanting DOF. For close ups DOF is easy even on a m43 sensor.
  4. Definitely a safe option, tho the GH4 is worse in low light then the 5 and niether are great. I'd go with a GH5 with IBIS and 4k 60
  5. I think filmic is a more modern term as it specifies to making digital look like film. I've definitely seen added film grain before which only points to an attempt to mimic film. But I in general agree. For me something looks filmic when its lit and exposed well. I kind of expected the Force Awakens to have a certain look being shot on film, but it looked like every other movie out there, at least to my untrained eye. I look at news sources occasionally. I am not always impressed by the integrity displayed. What I meant is that I'll hear about something on facebook, and then look it up afterwards on some other outlet.
  6. An M50 is hard to beat. You can get them for like $450. The M100 also has PDAF.
  7. Interesting. It definitely works pretty well but its not magic, like I thought it might be. I wonder if the 1D being a DSLR contributes to it.
  8. I can't imagine my fuji hunting that much in those conditions, even on my XT20.
  9. Nice work! You really nailed the action. Some reactions were a bit slow but overall its really good. Were they both martial artists? How long did that take you to shoot?
  10. Looks great. The 17-55 is a great lens.
  11. Yeah I agree pretty much. Though they need to figure a way to lock in down when not being used.
  12. I have a feeling they won't give us internal 10bit. Hopefully I am wrong. This camera could be a holy grail though. People saying Hybrid cameras are finally there in terms of being good enough. If the A7S3 delivers internal 10 bit 4k 60p with venice color, then I'll say that is true.
  13. I get my news from Facebook, probably not a good thing??
  14. I think streaming is probably the future. I don't know though. I personally think all this 4k, 8k HDR stuff is pretty much nonsense that is being pushed to make a profit. I've never heard a person come back from a movie and say it didn't look sharp enough. I just saw the original Jurassic Park at a theater. Pretty sure they were just using a BlueRay disk to show it. But it looked great to me. When something looks fake in a movie its the CGI, sometimes. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was shot in 8k and I never remember thinking wow this is so much better looking then Star Wars which was shot on Film. Everyone young person I know has netflix haha. Amazon and hulu are big too. I love YouTube, but its not a good representation of video. Pewdiepie is one of the top 5 viewed channels or something and he uploads vids in 720p from a shitty Canon camera.
  15. I don't know TV never looked filmic until more recently. Netflix shows all look cinema to me. TV not as much, but depends on the show. TV will die out anyways. Shallow depth of field and slow motion are modern. I love slow motion. Shallow DOF is stupid tho.
  16. Yeah the Nikon looks pretty bad. Was that face detect or just standard? Canon really made a good decision when they invested in their auto focus system. However the gap is closing. Look at the jump Fuji made from the XT2 to the XT3. Pretty huge. If they put in the same amount of effort their next camera could be there finally. Sony has made huge strides as well. Lets see what they offer in an A7S3 or A7000.
  17. Everything is just a trend in the end. Movies shot on digital are still adding film grain and IMHO, the younger generation has a continued obsession with older stuff. Shows like Stranger Things were super popular for that very reason. The push for 8k and higher resolutions has a bigger benefit for VFX and live event capture. Of course its easier to manipulate a high res image to look softer then a soft image to look sharp. That said I honestly can't tell the difference between film and digital. The Force Awakens was shot on Film and I couldn't tell. Looked super sharp and detailed to me. Unless its being shot on Super8 or 16. When things are being lit and exposed by professionals it all looks very similar at least with moderately professional cameras. I don't know about people ditching the pocket 4k like they did the pocket. I think the original Pocket sensor was kind of outdated when it came out. In terms of overall usability I'd say the Pocket 4k is Black Magic's best camera in terms of usability. It crushes the Ursa 4.6k in terms of ISO performance, which is important for most prosumer low budget people. I am pretty excited to see what Black Magic puts out next in a bigger camera.
