Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
Video Hummus replied to jgharding's topic in Cameras
S5’s size and features looks interesting but I would like to know more about the L-Mount lenses. The kind of stuff I do I can’t imagine myself wanting to lug a S series camera (or any FF at the moment) in my pack all day. FF camera is great in S35 mode but you honestly need S35 native mount lenses for it to make any sense against MFT, imho. If they start releasing l-mount S35 glass I think that would be a pretty big sign for another nail in the coffin for MFT. -

What Olympus Lenses Are You Buying Before They (MIGHT) Disappear Forever?
Video Hummus replied to andrgl's topic in Cameras
For me the 12-100 f/4. Panasonic needs a constant aperture all-in one. I was hoping we would see their four thirds mount 28-35 f/2 and 35-100 f/2 be remade for MFT. Imagine if metabones made a speedbooster for four thirds to MFT. Not sure if it’s technically possible, given four thirds is 38.67mm and MFT is 19.25mm. -

GH5S has enough lowlight Performance for what I’ve needed it for. So If GH6 can match that but also give me 20MP+ stills, and 4K120p, 6K24p, and at least 10-bit 420 everything...I’d be ecstatic. I was very surprised when using it in a trip to Senja, Norway. Shot 8000 ISO, candlelight only, with the 12-35 f2.8 In HLG. Did de-noise in post on a few shots. If I would have had my 10-25mm f/1.7 Which is permanently attached to my camera, I could have dropped ISO from 8000 to 4000 or even 3200 which is a piece of cake for the 5S. Use a voighlander 0.95 and I’m not sure you would have problems with much of anything besides moonlight only or pitch black. Shot northern lights no problem with built-in time lapse feature. Although it was my first time and I learned a lot! Next time I will shoot a RAW sequence and assemble in post. ISO performance from the A7SIII is amazing but for me is quite niche, really.

I don’t much care for the two variants in the same model paradigm they did with the GH5 and the 5S. If they need or want to go S35 that’s fine but please don’t leave out key brand features like IBIS. And having a MFT GH6, a S35 GH6S with the S1 and now S5 doesn’t make much sense. The key technologies that must be there for sure are Dual ISO, IBIS, and Handheld HiRes composite images as they have become key LUMIX brand features and help expand the usability of MFT in areas where a smaller sensor can fall short (mostly lowlight and lack of Megapixels). Otherwise they just need to expand on a lot of features they have going like their 6K photo mode for instance.

Add in a 6K ex-teleconvert feature...killer combo.

It’s user controllable as well. A fast, high mega pixel sensor will give you just that. I don’t care about 1080p anymore. It’s a resolution I use when I have to for higher frame rates. It’s 4K capture and delivery for me always. So a sensor that can deliver 16:9 6K up to 60p (not using the entire sensor) would allow for oversampled 4K up to 60p. The higher frame rates historically used pixel-binning to achieve it. Again a higher MP count would be helpful. Hell 6K all the way for me. I think it’s the sweet spot for a video mirrorless camera because it’s flexible. Ability to go up to 8K when processed smartly with a upscaler for use on larger productions or for stock footage. Ability to go down for better 4K...and 1080p. But not to sound like I’m disagreeing. As my original post about it was exactly that...there as some many other things they could add to improve the shooting experience and workflow that are more valuable than resolution or even DPAF.

But there was an interview saying they will have a 8K camera for Olympus (now pushed to 2021) and that they were bringing the technology to cinema and then Lumix cameras. So maybe the delay of the olympics was a good thing for the LUMIX side of the development and they just decided to skip one generation and go onto the next...maybe...its a long shot. EDIT: This one. The sensor looked like a S35 so perhaps they will try with a MFT sensor first before they figure out how to scale it up to FF SH series camera.

I’m not sure they are working on this anymore? They need to partner with someone like Samsung that has a lot of OLED experience to further develop the Organic sensor idea. I think the biggest obstacle is you must keep it cool or it essential causes wear and tear on the sensor and a degraded image. In its last form it would be really hard to put it in a mirrorless camera. We haven’t even seen it in a VariCam yet! But they boasted it had like 16 Stops of DR!

Honestly all magic lantern has to do is implement a proper temperature timer and be done with it. Once the camera reaches the temperature reported after 20 mins of 8K RAW it shuts down. After 3 minutes the camera naturally cools down to cold start temperatures and is ready for another 20 mins of 8K. This would be a safe implementation because its based entirely off the supposed temperatures Canon wanted the camera to max out at. We have seen the internal temperature is barely effected by the outside conditions. Now, depending how the temperature is reported the firmware hack would be relatively small actual code changes. Or even simpler, just change the code that writes the cripple clock to RAM to always be 25 mins.

I think there was a lot of initial impulse buys with the R5...which is worst. They get there camera then find out its a complete usability joke.

Perhaps with the delay of the Summer Olympics to July 2021 gave some breathing room for Panasonic to re-evaluate the capabilities. When they launched the S camera’s the official company line was “Panasonic is on track for 8K by 2020”. I assumed we would have seen it in a FF S series camera, but with the release of the S5 and the past 24MP S1H release it hasn’t come to pass. The spirit of the GH MFT cameras has always been “the first with 4K...the first with 4K 60p...”. Or in more broad terms to push the limits. However, we have see a gigantic leap in FF technology. We have 8K, we have 4K120p, all offered in 10-bit 420 or better, with excellent rolling shutter performance. At this point I would rather see the first internal ND solution in a mirrorless camera than 8K from a MFT sensor. I would rather see a very solid 6K60p and 4K120p. I would rather have internal RAW or ProRes HQ straight from the camera. Give us dual gain ISO from GH5S with IBIS. Give us some more absolutely unique 1.7 prime zooms like the 10-25 f/1.7 A 25-50 f/1.7 would pair nicely indeed and give us a native mount lens with AF that would compete with the classic speedbooster Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 f/1.8 setups. Besides, we have all the other focal lengths and aperture combinations already covered in the extensive MFT lens ecosystem. People that complain about these big and heavy MFT lenses don’t need yet another 12-35 f2.8 standard zoom! All of those features above actually improve the shooting experience with the camera. 6K is a nice middle ground, offering excellent 4K delivery and makes a “8K” anamorphic headline grabber still possible, while also offering a high resolution HFR not seen in any other mirrorless camera. Besides, I could shoot 6K60p and use a superscaler from BM Resolve or Topaz and essential get a 8K60p video and very few people would be the wiser. All the new “hybrid” cameras aren’t really hybrids at all. The R5/R6 are photo first cameras. They shit the bed for video. The Sony A7SIII is an excellent video mirrorless camera but its 12MP sensor hampers it for mixed photo work. Besides, I think Blackmagic is more of a threat they now have a S35 12K sensor shooting at 60p! Imagine something similar in a new pocket 6K camera with modular mount...ouch! The A7IV will be a true hybrid but will probably max out at 4K60p video and still have a 24MP sensor, which is well within the competing range for 20MP+ MFT sensors for photo work. And they don’t even have to use a 4:3 sensor if that don’t want to. JVC has proved that (although for photo I really like the 4:3 aspect ratio vs 3:2 a lot)! Anyway, long rambling post.

Absolutely hilarious. Giving weasels a bad name. I know you don’t want to do the whole YouTube thing Andrew, but this is why. Toneh just rips others peoples hard work and words and records his video and collectes ad revenue and plugs his books. -
It’s very possible. However there has been very subtle hints dropped here and there on LUMIX live broadcasts with Matt and Sean and perhaps a very subtle one by Phillip Bloom in one of his live shows (he wouldn’t even say the name GH6 I regards to a question).

His point is moot anyway because the 65C temps return to normal in 2-3 minutes and not hours like the cripple timer would lead you to believe. If it was 8K recording for 20 mins and then a 5 min cool down before another round of 8K then that’s fine. If the cool down timer actual was based off internal temperature that would be fine. It’s not. It seems completely artificial and arguably an excessive cripple. -
1860 vs 2200 or a 15% increase.

Panasonic S5 Entry Level Full Frame seems to be real...
Video Hummus replied to jgharding's topic in Cameras
At least you don’t have to explain to your wife that you are about to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on audio equipment in this current economic environment. Its good but not great. It tends to be slightly off, much better when you use the zoom function and peaking enabled but we can’t do that when live recording ;-( -
It’s rare to see the same batteries being used among one brand across different format cameras. I think its a wise move.
-
Yes, and the afterwards make sure to immediately inject bleach in your body,
-
This is very intriguing. From a business standpoint wouldn’t they want you to have to buy different batteries for the cameras? More money in their pocket and larger total product margins. I’m going to double down on my theory that the GH6 will share the S5 body. Leaked price is at $1,999.

Pants down and knickers shit. Maybe the few that got a non-recalled R5 are the lucky ones now. There will no doubt be mods to enable 8K in 20 minute recording chunks with a 2 minute cool down now that we know the true internal temps. -

S5 basically a full frame GH5 with 10-bit 420 across the board with a new battery that can be used in the GH5/GH5S/G9. If the price is right this camera will be positioned very well. If it has new AF system it will be a very, very solid release indeed. Woah, exiting!
