  1. I could seem them releasing a firmware update for the S1 and S1H to readjust the product segments. Otherwise this S5 is stepping on the S1’s toes so to speak. If they adjust the S1 up in features then the S1H would need a price drop or a firmware.
  2. I believe Matt from Panasonic said the L 24-105 is varifocal (adjusts the focus as you zoom) to achieve parfocal abilities in operation but not in optical construction as say the fujinon mK cinema lenses.
  3. I haven’t seen anything about him using the 1D3 either, but then again I’ve only occasionally watch his videos anymore. I really do think the R5 is a huge embarrassment and as time has gone on the hype has worn off and people are starting to vocalize their displeasure with the R5. But I think Canon is going to just ignore it and push out more RF products and pivot by saying the R5 and R6 were photography only cameras (please forget about the all the video spec hype we did). And then the resale value of the R5 will tank because there will be so many on the second hand market. But Canon can pretty much do anything because there are sooo many Canon users and fanboys (yes there is a difference) that will give Canon a pass.
  4. The G9 does well too (better than GH5 and GH5S) when you use a picture profile other than vlogl. I’m not sure if they has to do with more contrast in the image or what. I’m not actually sure where in the pipeline the contrast and DfD optimizations are happening. But like others have said, with the G9 at least, it performs surprising well. Definitely by far the best contrast only implementation. I really think they need to overhaul it and give it a new name. Depth from Defocus doesn’t instill much confidence. I also think improving the tracking, eye, face, and object improves the performance a lot too as the algorithm can work on a smaller area when determining focus. The sample rate (FPS) helps a lot too. The performance between 24p and 60p is very noticeable. If you take the direction they have been going with DfD it has been a combination of improving the algorithm and inventing extremely responsive AF motors that can do the “contrast hunt” faster and faster and thus less and less perceived.

    Panasonic GH6

This is how it is with some sensors made for industrial applications and then tweaked by a camera manufacture (or sony themselves) for camera use. I think the differences in DR are all on the processing side and perhaps how each camera can keep the sensor cool or at least in optimum performance range. The S1H is a good example. They do heavy noise reduction and perhaps the cooling helps keep the sensor DR performance near what they would measure in the lab, ie perfect conditions.
  6. The final nail in the coffin will be the liquid nitrogen 1 min dip test. Make it so! Or construct one of those old school SLR dry ice Astro cooling boxes and repeat this same test. I bet the result will be the same.
  7. Well Andrews findings are going mainstream now so Canon is going to have to address it soon and explain what is going on bug or malfunction or otherwise. Whats nice is any concerned R5 owner can repeat this test and see for themselves and make their own conclusion. Personally, after doing this test and watching that message “overheating! Shutting down” appear on screen while my camera is in a 4C fridge with reported temperatures well below starting temperatures in a 24C room I would be pissed. Especially when you go to get your camera and its cold to the touch.
  8. Well, let’s wait and see but yes its disappointing. I can’t see them having the S5 with the the same specs basically as the S1. Rumored announcements coming in September.
  9. Mr. Brynn North dropping another beautiful montage. GH5, Speedbooster, Canon 7-200 f4, Sigma 18-35 f1.8, and Sigma 50-100 f1.8. All manual focus. All very well done. Would love to see longer docu-style pieces from him. All his travels films he does for himself have a more serious, respectful tone to them.
  10. This is the closest thing I could find on e-bay for something similar. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Voigtlander-Sohn-Wein-Braunschweig-Euryscop-5-Rapid-Rectilinear-Aplanat-/273991742809 Very interesting. Maybe somebody knows more. I’ll keep researching in my spare time.
  11. I need some help identifying this lens (pictures below). I believe its for 8x10. It’s a Voigtlander & Sohn with serial no. 28281 which, if authentic, would put its production around 1880s. It has no lens markings at all and from my limited research you have to find out the focal length and aperture yourself. I didn’t have much time with the lens to figure it out since I was such visiting. Friend found it while helping someone go through their grandma’s stuff in the basement. From my limited research.
  12. I’m sure with this now being in A7SIII it will be integrated into resolve and premier. Seems like the future. Film in higher resolutions, with slightly higher shutter speeds, stabilize in post with 10% crop. Fine tune a few clips to fix the motion blur. Definitely cheeper than lugging around gimbal or some crazy expensive Arri glide can contraption.
  13. @mechanicalEYE beta testing for Canon. Non of that behavior makes any sense especially since that same timer will decrease to zero with the camera not recording anything and sitting in a menu. Sounds like a bug in Canons cripple timer implementation.
  14. Then there are some like Brandon Li that make their living with one or two cameras on gimbals with heavy use of AF. To each their own. I would rather have AF and hit the MF switch when I want to.
  15. Yep, should be #1 priority. They have everything else. The specs seem really good. There has to be a firmware updating coming for the S1 series. No? They must have gotten the message that people want a smaller body. I’m really interested in what they will price this at and how big the body is, only because they might be using the same body for a GH6. Would make sense to unify the look and reduce costs. Just a theory. Personally, I don’t mind bigger MFT cameras. when you compare the size of GH5 and A7 cameras they are about the same. The GH5 even a bit chunkier, even. The G and GX cameras fill the compact MFT camera space for me. I’d rather have a pro MFT body that feels good in the hands and is jammed packed full of features and a companion G or GX camera to be my b-cam or light pack camera. Or its all a sign that they are dumping Pro MFT all together...
  16. I heard it uses the highly technologically advanced Placebo affect to cool the camera! Cutting edge stuff!
  17. Yeah, tiny bit worrisome they are releasing yet another FF camera that has a hard time competing at all. Same with the G100. Like, wtf.
  18. Doesn’t seem to be temperature based at all. Too many contradictions. Its the CFExpress cards overheating. But it happens with SD cards too. Many cameras are recording to SD at high bitrates for a long time now. Its the sensor overheating. Yet the sensor can record for 45+ mins in 102F scorching sun in 4KHQ and then immediately afterwards the god timer says it can record 20mins. Yet from a cold start it can only record for 25mins. It’s the the DIGiC processor overheating. It could possibly be the codec compression that causes overheating. But again, doesn’t make sense consider the above three points. But then again, why are the timers the same when recording to SD card modes? Also, the camera overheats sitting in a menu with now codec compression or encoding going on at al!
  19. Thank you those were good reads!
  20. This is dead on. And people would have paid $1000 extra for the this “R5 C” just because it’s a Canon and had 8K RAW and 4K120p with the autofocus and clog3.
  21. Brandon Li’s work. He is super pragmatic. Says the camera is an upgrade in almost every way for him (he is not a stills shooter). He didn’t use a PP either. I think the main highlight in this video though is the autofocus. It’s amazing!
  22. They’ve put themselves in a box. I doubt it having better specs than S1 if it’s suppose to be entry level. FF 4K60p is a stretch unless they also add it via firmware to S1. Affordable L mount Lenses are still limited. They just released a “vlogging” camera that nobody really likes or wants. I have no clue why they are releasing a new model. Unless it’s a GX style FF camera, which would be appealing to some.
