  1. I own a fair amount of Apple products and I am well aware of the “Apple tax”, but generally, in the past, you were getting a solidly built machine with decent specs and a great ecosystem that just worked.

This new machine looks like an IKEA foot stool with hardware to match a foot stool. The base specs and components are laughable. The very fact that diehard Apple fans laughed at the $1000 monitor stand says all you need to know: Apple has lost touch with the Pro users who championed the hardware and software.

Apple has left me no choice but to choose a PC in the next few years. Pricing this at $6000 is a clear sign they are not interesting in Pro users that make up the bulk of Apple enthusiast that championed the system in the past. It’s even a rip off for cash cow media studios.

I would frankly be surprise to see a version of this under $3000 that didn’t come with 2+ year old hardware in the base configuration. What a joke. All about the margins now.

Maybe I can help. From mr Skip77 logic, GH5 is system of the past, and as such, people who still love and use it simply hate progress, of whom mr Skip77 feel himself as protector, because he knows what is road map and future - as well as GH5 relict-pensioners, being metaphorical ghosts from past, don't know anything about path to the future, and so they represent certain iteration of dark force against which mr Skip77  always remonstrate bravely and resolutely. As such defined haters, GH5 users deserve special treatment against their contamination influence.

Oh man don’t feed his anger. I suggest that they take a calm walk in the woods with a camera (any camera, I don’t care) before they die of a heart attack.

Panasonic flag ship hybrid was the GH5, was, not anymore. That seems to bother you for some reason. Panasonic could have easily introduced the GH6 to the market and let that camera bridge the gap to it's cine lineup. They did not and I trust they did this for a reason and that reason is cine is moving toward full frame sensors for all the next gen cine cameras. The proof is what glass is being developed for FF cine sensors. It's called a road map and the future.

Dude, chill out. What is your problem. Why does it bother you people like the GH5 and use it to create quality content for two years. Did the GH5 steal your girlfriend/boyfriend? Based on your posts you seem like an angry person.

What? I'm not sure what you're even trying to say?

You said the GH5 was overpriced on release. That is just silly. It's $2000 price tag for what you got was a bargain two years ago. It wasn't overpriced at all on release.

That it's $1500 now is a sign that the gap between it and the cameras that have come out since has narrowed, not that it was overpriced on release. It's a much more competitive market now than it was then, and things are moving faster than ever. It's also probably a sign that the GH6 is coming sooner rather than later.

What I find astonishing is that it hasn’t been beaten in its category until, well, Panasonic S1 series release.

I really hope Panasonic recognizes the potential and the expectations of the GH6 and rises to the challenge.

GH5s is not geared for everyone... including reliable information of century by Mathew Frazer (2:40) : it gets 2 stops more DR in comparison with GH5 approaching 14 stops of latitude, which is high end cinema camera territory...

I’ve noticed a bit of a bump in DR over the GH5. Especially if you use the HLG profile has a capture profile only.

Panasonic has said that removing the IBIS allows more thermal wiggle room with what they could do. So far, I don’t think they have actually done anything with it. If they became more serious about the GH5S and added things like external ProRes Raw support via HDMI, more interesting internal codec options.

I don’t think it will ever have RAW unless external or something like a magic lantern hack for it.

  6. I bought the GH5S before the P4K was released. I’ve said many times Panasonic needs to give GH5S a bit of love with firmware updates and perhaps a price drop. Because who would buy it when the P4K has BRAW and internal ProRes?

In my uses, like shooting in rainy conditions, and blowing wind in Iceland and Norway, the P4K would have been toast.

And as for the rolling shutters?

Only a worry for the PanPan crowd.

The train is obviously leaning heavily to the left. It’s bad and looks unrealistic. No “panPan” in that shot.

People blog on the EOS R. There is a lot of panning when they flip the camera around or spin at all.

No one wants to get in a pissing match about your camera and that you love it. Many people (even people who own it) express disappointment with Canon with it. It has some great features but a lot of compromises people can’t get over.

  8. It will look like a 18-45 f3 on a GH5S. Which is even a bit more wide. On a GH5 with ETC it can be a 20-75 f3.5.

If one doesn’t already have fast prime already (I don’t) this is a no brainer purchase. Especially since it has manual focus clutch and reduced focus breathing and a stepless aperture wheel for smooth aperture changes.

pretty sure that's a big reason we've not seen a Sony a7s3 - there's no way they can squeeze 4k60p in those bodies without it exploding

I have the same hunch as well. They are probably taking the time to design a whole new body for future cameras as well. Maybe even chipsets and all.

Shooting at 4Kp60 with PDAF in chip and eye AF is probably challenging on the hardware.

the new linear focus options is really great for manual focus

Why can’t they bring this to GH5/S? It’s just a software update. Please Panny!

Something really satisfying about seeing Panasonic really deliver the goods. If they put internal ND's in it will truly be revolutionary. We'll see how Sony responds.

At this point it’s possible. The press release didn’t do this camera justice apparently.

Looks like it does actually have that flippy screen so many were interested in though, so that's good:

This single photo tells us more than that whole press conference. What. The. Hell.

    1. Active cooling.

    2. Flip screen.

What else does it have that they neglected to leave out of an important press announcement?

How many people have been screaming for a capable full frame camera with a flip screen?!

God, they bungled this announcement. They needed to create buzz and excitement.

And good luck with an EOS R... You might need to buy new lenses to get any sort of wide end, if all you have is designed for full frame... And the rolling shutter is shit. No IBIS. No 10bit. No 4K/60p. No built in ND, the adapter is needed and it's not a pro piece of kit, sucks in dirt, not easy to go instantly to clear filter, and to top it all off, there's no kind of 120fps at all... Unless you count the 720p line skipped shite. I don't.

But it’s been named the most underrated camera of 2019 by Matti Hapaaja. Never mind it’s only June 2019. Never mind he received two free cameras from canon and “wasn’t paid” for his views. Uh huh.

Boogles my mind that Panasonic did not try to hype this up. I mean canon can hype a 5DIV in 2019 (EOS R).

There will be no cheap "consumer" cameras in five years.  It will either be "wannabe professional", or professional cameras.  I know that's harsh, but with smartphones taking over photos and video, limited markets mean higher per unit costs for cameras.

    Yeah, this is spot on.

I’m still excited for the release and hope there are some more surprises. I really enjoy Panasonic cameras. They get a lot right with ergos and menus systems, codecs options, and firmware upgrades. I enjoy using my GH5S way more than when I had a A7iii. I think the image looks way better and has more weight to it. I’m don’t put bokeh as high on my list as other people.

I do wish though that if they can’t improve their CDAF then they should use PDAF in the meantime. I think the S1 has improved in that regard, not a leap, but a skip and a hop.

I do wish they would continue to push the boundaries like they did with the GH5 2 years ago with things like built in vari-NDs in DSLR form factor.
