Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill
Geoff_L replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ah, couldn't import the clips in Resolve (latest 16 beta), then discovered 10 bits h264 is a Resolve studio capability... So back to premiere... I may have to buy a bmpcc4k to obtain a licence key and be able to use S1 files ? -
Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill

Thanks a lot Andrew, will play with it this afternoon. What do you think about the IBIS ? From all the reviews I read and watched, they put it, for some, at the GH5 level, and even in the G9 league for others (I guess it is with dual IS and the 24-105). -
Beautiful and captivating ! Ah, and so much flexibility that makes me jealous and my back cracking ?

Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill

This camera is more and more tempting ! The S1H could really be wonderful, given what we see here. With Sigma surprise announcements on top of that, not a bad start for the L alliance ! -
Don, please... I might be the only one into that I guess ahah (a trauma from Iceland I believe ! ) ? Joke aside, during my Fuji love affair I played with my wife's 55-200 (I personally had the 50-140), and what a beast ! I preferred it to my big and heavy 50-140 f2.8. The OIS is really great and the reach was very useful for our style : landscape/documentary/ nature photography + videography. We love to film (and photograph) isolated subjects or patterns far away, for example a beautiful small light on a big mountain wall, or reindeers mating on the toundra, while waiting for the auroras time ? . For this kind of use, the 55-200 really excel. Only downside is the absence of kind of weather resistance, as we encounter a lot of bad conditions. Oh, and it doesn't take the 1.4TC. For long lenses you can try the 100-400, but it is... a real beast. I thought about a fringer adapter + a canon mount sigma 100-400 too. I'm still debating between a Z6, a S1 and maybe a X-T3 ; if I go with the latter, the 55-200 will be with me, cause I really like those fluffy sheeps grazing in the far distant ?

Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
Geoff_L replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes you are right, it is more interesting for people like me that leaves at the boundary, because we can still benefit from the warranty by directly bringing the camera to the store, for example at Geneva (that, of course, only if there is a big price difference after having add VAT). I believe some camera brands refuse to repair cameras bought in Switzerland. And yes, with current rebates, you can find it at more or less 2000€, which is the same as Switzerland + VAT I guess (https://audiophil-foto.de/de/shop/kameras/nikon/nikon-z6-z-24-7040-s_5688_559). Same debate as with grey market, which becomes less interesting when you add VAT... I'm also waiting to see how it works with the TechArt, as I'm debating between buying the Z6 again or wait for a S1 (have to save more...). I want to use certain Canon lenses, so I need to check the stacking of MC-11>>TechArt>>Z ! Anyway, good times to hunt for a camera !! -

Great ! Switzerland prices are even wilder ! Did you see my previous link ? Z6 + 24-70 the same price as the Fuji xt3 +18-55 ! Crazy... For lenses, don't know if you would like to go the nikon G adapted route, but I loved their 1.8G prime line-up ; at least they are really good for photography : not too expensive, really lightweight, good quality... plastic made and not great for manual video focusing though. I really liked the 20, 24, 50 and 85 ! Great kit. I think they may be too "clinical" for some, depending on what you want as output. -
Mattias, I was waiting for you to come quickly, thinking you would be the most excited !!
-
Oh sh*t, did not see the (BIG AND UNMISSABLE) CDN thing... I was thinking about go the S1 route for photo/video uses and later add a bmpcc4k... but S1 + this one, sharing the same mount : quite tempting !
-
ahah, that was... hm, not sure how I feel after that, but love it too ? "Fucked up" sum it up well !
-
So, could it indicate that an apsc L-mount will be release ? Sigma foveon... or panasonic ? Is it just me or the video really emphasize on the video side (with the rig) ?
-
I do not have the camera (yet ! I am trying to sell a kidney right now ? ), but I am closely reading about it. From what I understand, the upgrade comes free for every buy until September 30. You then have to fill in a form, and you later receive a letter. Here is the official page for the promotion + the form : https://offre-lumix-s1.e-odr.fr/fr/?fbclid=IwAR2sz9mtUEs6NWeK1aRt-jzQWyX-WDyHmO8TK1wLf3c8o0_xcjOblspD0Nk

Good point, I too thought about the "partners to satisfy" idea, but I am too naive and told myself that they only want to satisfy customers ? But I guess it is quite logical in their alliance balance : do not ruin our plan by allowing everybody to use canon lenses and preventing them from buying ours ! If I was to buy it, it would only annoy me with the photography side. For video, with long lenses, I would manual focus only anyway, thus caring much for ibis and lowlight.

No idea if their tests are relevant, but cinema5D measured the dynamic range : Given the first Vlog tests on youtube, it really seems to have quite more dynamic range with it, so it will end up not being to bad !!

Just came across this MC-21 compatibility list someone made : https://www.tttphotography.com/sigma-mc-21-ef-l-lens-adapter-compatibility/ As I was interested to know how the canon 200 f2.8 and 100-400 ii work, I'm glad to read the results are quite good ! I even watched a video (from Wex if I remember, or maybe Park cameras....) where they test the canon 100-400, and it is really really good (at least good for photo). Strangely, they report the sigma 100-400 contemporary doesn't work, while sigma put it on the official compatibility list ! They really missed out with this MC21 adapter... seriously. Why they did not "surf" on the MC11 relative success and use that experience to make the same with this one ? I guess it must be for technical reasons but, still, given the price of those new lenses, it would have been great to obtain the mc11 compatibility level.

Does anybody know what type of card is mandatory to take advantage of the new vlog recording ? From what I've read, xqd is only needed for 180fps. I guess, a v90 sd card would be sufficient for everything else ? Damn, I haven't got the needed money to buy this monster, but big sales are putting it right now at a decent price... and make me feel less in need for money ?

But I keep the idea for a next challenge, when the og pocket will cost less than 200 (OK, could take years...) ? ! -
Just an info after having browse the manual and watch stuffs about it. The Ex. tele converter function that works on the gh5, g9 (and others I guess), which is, I believe, similar to Sony's "clear zoom", is present on the S1. This, combined with the really effective ibis ("the hybrid shooter" on YT says it is close to the G9, when using IS2 with a compatible lens), is really appealing to me. Even if autofocus appears to be "meh" with the sigma MC21 adapter, it is possible to use lenses like the Canon 200 f2.8, and make it a really versatile tool by using the crop mode + Ex teleconverter. Same for the sigma 100-400 etc. Some guys on YT post a lot of birding video + photo samples with the Sony A7iii + mc11 + sigma 150-600 + clear zoom, and the results are very good ; at least from a "poor man's" versatile wildlife kit. With the S1, you add on top of that a very effective ibis... Too bad, prices are quite high ?

Yes its crazy ! Not so long ago, it was still selling brand new for around 1000€, while the bmpcc4k was at 1300€ !
