  1. Not a deal-breaker for me though I would have preferred it and it is my default with XT3. It’s just the AF that might be... And that remains to be seen...

    Panasonic GH6

I’m not in the market for a GH6 or any 4/3 camera but surely with what is going to be the demise of Olympus as we know it, if there is no GH6, then 4/3 is dead? Not dead as in cannot be used, but dead as in it only leaves a few cinema type bodies which I imagine hardly sell in any kind of quantity.
  3. The self-regulation goes for everything in life I suppose that we consume and YouTube is just another ‘channel’.

    Spot The Camera?

Yes, looks like the Sony AX100 to me, flipped of course and is and has been my workhorse for ceremony & speeches at weddings for quite a few years (since whenever it came out). I actually shot an entire wedding video on it once, but then immediately went back to mirrorless. It’s good for static stuff but the result is not exactly what you might call ‘cinematic’. At least not in my hands 🤪
  5. My rule of thumb for YouTube is if it has any of the following in the title/thumbnail, I will not click: A stupid faked shocked face. A clickbait title. Anything that calls a; campervan, motorhome, caravan, van, car or shed, a ‘Tiny House’. Any of these can be homes, but none of them are houses. The ‘problem’ with YouTube is that whilst the quality levels and content of some channels is exceptional, the sea of utter dross gets ever bigger.
  6. More than that even... It’s the combo of: the camera, how it’s set up, the lens choices, the material you have to work with and the decisions made in that regard (which are not always within your control) and of course the skill level of the operator etc. I’m sure there are folks out there who think that all they need is a ‘Netflix’ approved camera and the path to fame & riches awaits.

    Sony A7S III

Indeed it is not and especially as someone who ‘hates’ change... But there are times when you need to make changes and that time for me has come. My ‘ideal’ at the end of 2019 was the tech of the XT3 in the XH1 body, but we got the XT4. That is not to say the XT4 is not a great camera but for me, needs the battery grip plus I need 2 units at all times...and that makes for some fairly big units which begins to work against me again... So right now, my ideal kit does not exist. We’re closest today with the new Sony. I was giving serious consideration to the Canon’s but they have pretty much blown it for themselves. This new Panny S5 is potentially in the running but based on history, surely the AF (essential to me) is going to let it down. Then there is Nikon. The Z6 and lenses ticked pretty much every box except twin card slots (dual write) and 4K 60p otherwise I would have already gone there. XH2... it’s just a big unknown at this point in time with nothing except supposedly official confirmation that something will be coming at some point. The bottom line for me is a number of factors and in no particular order: I’m not going to switch for the sake of it. Funds are tight for obvious reasons and there is so much uncertainty for the near future, it’s not an ideal time to be ‘investing’. I have 8 months to my next job so plenty of time and if the right replacement kit is not available by that time, I will wait until it is because... ...what I have is ‘good enough’ and when I do whatever comes next, I don’t want to be changing or ‘upgrading’ it any time soon after that. Which is back where I started, - I ‘hate’ change. But will make any changes if on balance it’s worth it to me. A7S3 is ticking a lot of boxes right now though...
  8. This is what I understood to be the case, ie, there are pre-production examples out there in the wild right now and come 2nd Sep, not only will there be the official Panny announcement, but the usual suspects plus some others, will be populating YouTube with ‘pre-prod reviews’.
  9. The more I see, the more I like. Only 2 questions really remain for me and those are; what is the AF going to be like and also I assume it’s a true hybrid and it is easy to flip between (and remember) different stills & video settings. All will be revealed next week I guess...
  10. None, but I do wish they had joined the the RebeL Alliance. Otherwise wish them well and enjoyed their camera’s with my fave lens being the 75mm f1.8

    Sony A7S III

@Trek of Joy I was not aware of Brandon before so thanks for the heads up. Very impressed. I have never been much of Sony fan before but this unit and the lens options available are ticking just about every box except... Price I’d prefer 20 megapixies I’d prefer a tilt screen None of the above are deal-breakers however. Otherwise that XH2 had better be damn good and available by end of March 2021 otherwise for only the 3rd time in my 20 year professional career, I will be switching. Unlike those folks that switch 3 times in a year. And then actually admit it in a specially made YouTube video...

    How do you deliver?

1080 to Vimeo and they download from there at whatever options are available/they choose.
  13. @Cliff Totten serious question and I have no idea in regard to the answer but if Panasonic are painfully aware they are lacking in the AF department, why? These sensors they are ‘given’, who is ‘giving’ them? They are either making their own or buying them in but in either case they are 100% responsible. No one is making them not use a PDAF system as far as I am aware? But I know nothing, especially anything techy. I just like stuff that works and I ‘give’ my money to companies that make things work.
  14. This is becoming increasingly interesting to me... My only two criticisms of the S1 (for stills) and S1H (for video) pairing that I was previously considering was: A: The size...which whilst not a deal-breaker, was/is larger than I’d ideally like to work with and B: The AF which was/is a deal-breaker. There is actually a third and that is the big white LUMIX lettering, but that can be reduced with some black paint. So yes, with a size reduction over the existing models and AF of at least an acceptable standard, could this be a hybrid finally that ticks all my boxes? I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks...
  15. Ah, I see what you did there... never buy a Canon ‘DSLR’ again, leaving the mirrorless door ajar 😘
  16. Well as a cheese fanboy, the next test I’d like to see is Canon R5 vs a block of cheddar. But seriously, this is a pretty ridiculous situation when a camera doesn’t even work properly due to overheating in a fridge!
  17. Another ‘it depends’ as there is no definitive answer to this question. I am also in the boat of only 1 paying job this year out of what should have been 25. The consequence of that is from Oct ‘19 until July ‘20, I had no need for any kit at all. From Aug ‘20 now until April ‘21, I have no need again. I would have been better off renting this year for 1 single day’s shooting but of course I had no idea of that at the time. Right now and until next Spring, no priority other than surviving. Ideally, I’d like to trade up my XT3’s to something like the Sony A73s plus lenses, but even in ‘21 don’t need to and will probably just sit tight for and during next year just in case... But otherwise it’s just a total package isn’t it? Crap glass on a great body is still crap glass and great glass on a crap spec body is no better. My answer therefore is the best of everything that you can afford and justify based on your needs and the time.
  18. Hybrid wedding capture. I will manual focus certain static parts of the day but anything that involves subject movement and flitting between stills & video, good AF is a must.
  19. Yep, if it has 4K 60p 10 bit internal, PDAF and not crippled elsewhere, this particular Panasonic Pony of Hope could be interesting. No PDAF though and see ya.
  20. Wow. Looking increasingly like this was not only intentional, but also that they will flick a magic switch and "ta da!", all will be well. A handful of people will still not buy, but the much much much greater majority will and this particular storm in a teacup will soon fade away. I am sitting firmly on the fence. The question I always ask myself in this kind of scenario is who would my course of action hurt the most? If a product was the best solution for me, but they were sneaky bastards with dubious business practices, but hadn't actually killed any children, then I might overlook their poor practice. However, that would make me one of those, "ah, but if every individual had that attitude, then there would be no collective..." selfish types, but you know what, the world doesn't owe me a living and I don't own it anything much, but ultimately in this case, it's just a camera. I support 100% though the people such as Andrew who want to run with this kind of thing, in principle, if not always with my wallet. I have already ruled it out regardless as it doesn't have 'enough' to warrant the investment from me. It just seems stupid to me that anyone would behave this way in the first place. I can't stand bullshit...but often have to live with it because it's easier to do so.
  21. For me, it's not Canon per se, but all of the manufacturers because it seems not one of them can manage to produce a hybrid without at least one serious flaw. Re. Canon in general, I suppose it's because more people have had or have Canon than any other brand and if you want a pure stills camera, they have always made some of the best and if you want a cine camera, ditto. They just refuse (it seems) to want to fuse the two which is one of the biggest demands in this day & age. Personally, I am brand agnostic and though I do favour Fuji, I probably would have bought a pair of R6's had they not been crippled (for my needs) and seriously considering the new Sony for 2021. I'd have jumped into bed with the Panasonic S1 this year if the AF had been up to snuff and the Z6 last year if it had had 4k 60p internal. If they can fix some of the issues with a flick of a switch, then in an ideal world, folks will vote with their wallets, ie, not purchase on principal. But back in the real world, if a 'thing' can be made to work, a lot of the folks who were adamant they would not purchase, will find a reason to do so. And there are the serial camera collectors who will buy it just because it says 8k on the tin. They will never use the 8k and never actually use the camera for anything other than some snaps of; their kids, their cat, their garden and maybe a brick wall. A very long lens will be attached and it will hang around their necks as a badge of honour. If they are at a wedding and you are there to officially capture it, they will wish to let you know early on in regard to the camera jewellery they are transporting around. And if it's got the potential for 8k, they will feel especially smug. Those people will buy the camera in droves. But I digress... All the talk of how to fix the thing outside of Canon recalling and doing it themselves is madness. If they don't wish to do that, then fair enough and they will lose a lot of the pro market, maybe just for a time, maybe for ever and that may or may not hurt them, - it depends how much of their market is pro. I have no idea what it is but suspect it's not enough to break them. In principle, I'd like to see it working though just because any product brought to market should work and for the overall good of our industry, but maybe there is a positive from all this... Maybe...and I hope it's the case, those companies working on new products such as Nikon, Fuji and maybe Panasonic, who will all be aware of what has been unfolding with Canon over the last few weeks, will ensure that their own products are not open to such criticism and actually end up being better than they otherwise might have been (without the Canon debacle)?
  22. A calculator app will be available soon in order to work out the infinite number of possible scenarios in which you can’t use the camera.
  23. Same here with a Fuji 56mm f1.2 It was in mint condition. Purchaser came back about a week after receiving it and said they thought it had been dropped and was damaged/not working properly. Complete BS. Ebay made me take it back. Kept it for a while and then sold it on to a UK dealer who confirmed 'mint'. With ebay, you have to stick to not selling it outside of them or take the risks.
