Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)
MrSMW replied to newfoundmass's topic in Cameras
Well looks like DP Review and Ted Forbes also in Japan and in the end of year predictions for next year, the only major camera body brand not discussed… Panasonic. NDA in place so you can hardly speculate when you already know what’s coming can you?! Another sign IMO there is at least one FF camera coming soon. I could be reading that wrong, but don’t think so. -

And Sam Holland who also is plus the Make Art Now guy whose name I forget and he’s no YouTube wannabe flake, plus a few others so as has been mentioned, either it’s multiple releases of several things that are coming at some point ‘soon’ or something bigger. It can’t just be some wide-angle M4/3 lens because honestly who would give a sh!t?! Not enough to warrant this gathering for sure! -
Crane M3 borderline at 1.2kg IMO… Had the S5 with 20-60mm zoom on it and it was close to the limit I’d say and would sometimes need a bit of manual encouragement! Sold it and ordered an DJI RS3, partly to handle the weight better and partly because of the auto lock function.

Panasonic S5 II (What does Panasonic have up their sleeve?)

Yes, pretty much. Has zero inside info and is generally just re-reporting in a rather long-winded manner, perpetually repeating the same rumor(s) over and over and over again. He’s not doing any harm, but as above, is just regurgitating rumor, not inside info. -

Nah… even Panasonic would not fly in a load of YouTubers just for the launch of a super-wide angle lens. Why would they? That is not to say there isn’t a SWA lens, but it’s not the main event or it would be the biggest WTF moment in camera history. -

That’s some weird distorted architecture they have there in Tokyo… -

Well as someone that was selling up and moving on anyway…but simply decided to hang fire for another year, it won’t really affect me either way. I hope they drop a bombshell rather than a clanger though! -

I agree. I think old Pannyboy are supping in the Last Chance Saloon right now when it comes to ‘perceived reputation’ with the great unwashed. Those less hysterical and in the know, know they have near or actual class-leading kit in most regards and it’s just that actual and perceived AF ‘limitation’. Maybe one day soon there will be more info one way or the other… -

Licensing their tech for $ for one thing… Panasonic have something like less than 5% market share right now, but if they can start producing higher selling units, then a win-win for both parties. -

Ahead of this probable LiDAR thing then as none of their cameras use the lens mount I guess… -

I stand corrected! Must be a fairly recent thing? -

Are they? I don’t think they are… Unless it’s some kind of module in the first instance for at least 4/3rd cameras and maybe existing FF, but being developed to be in camera for the next gen of the S line some time in 2023? This is currently my best guess…but is nothing but that, a guess… -

I hope it's not a 4/3rds only thing... If it is however, no biggie because if it works, surely it would then be developed for the FF range? Whether that be current models or future one's. The AF ability for cinema lenses with the RS3 is certainly interesting... I have had that gimbal on order for about a month now and looking forward to testing exactly this. -

Well as both ‘Make Art Now’ and Sam Holland are both at least proponents of this kit and have championed it on their channels, it kind of makes sense that there is a high probability of some development of this for Panasonic specific use. The question is, in or on the camera…?? If it’s on, fantastic. If it’s in, even more fantastic. But based on who is there, I’d say it’s 99% certain there is some kind of link up/joint venture between Panasonic and DJI. -

What intrigues me is this and I’m beginning to think it is maybe the more likely option? -

I doubt it as they already announced a while back that they were leaving this market segment as it was dead. -

Yes, surely it would just hurt the GH6 if it was G9... but then they have been selling them with whopping discounts recently... -

I'm crying at the very thought it's 'only' a G9 mk2. If that is what it is... Crying I tell ya! 🤪 -

Speculation 01 Could be a G9 (M4/3) successor. I hope not because, well 4/3rds... I know it has it's fans, but I am not one of them, - it just isn't for me. Speculation 02 Could be a hotshoe mounted lidar device but hmmm, would you really fly out a load of YouTubers for such a thing or just announce it? I would suspect more likely announce with a single official showcase of it's capabilities and then later send out units for folks to play with like they do with lenses. Speculation 03 Leica & Panny did announce earlier this year that they were working on something. This could be it, but no mention of Leica having anything to do with this announcement so... Speculation 04 New model replacing both S1 and S5. If there is to be a new body, I think they will amalgamate the two into a single unit. Probably in different flavours; the 'all-rounder', the hi res photo model and the video-centric model: S2, S2R, S2H. Please and FFS, use the S1H screen. -

Dear Panasonic I have 3 of 4 FF bodies back from being refurbed and just waiting on the fourth. If you get this right, my finger is paused over MPB while I can get the best price I still can for the lot. However, if you don't (get it right...for me/my needs) I will continue to use your products throughout 2023 at least until either you do (get it right...for me/my needs) or I decide to switch brand. Sincerely Me. -
Flat or neutral profile or whatever it’s called I’m afraid.

Company A. “We will make ours overheat”. Company B. “We will give ours autofocus from the mid 90’s”. Company C. “We will withhold anything that might compete with our cinema line”. Company D. “We will produce the best camera…but then make it absolutely massive and heavy”. Company E. “We will keep on doing retro funky but segment our product lines so no single camera within our lineup can do it all”. Company F. “Ve don’t give ze two sheetz about your gentleman’s agreement and vill continue to sell to ze dentist market”.

No just in camera, I am a run & gun hybrid video shooter and don’t (can’t) rig anything out. But same scenes shot back to back with the S5, just no contest.

This was pretty much my conclusion a couple of weeks back. It's fair to say I have been wrestling with the L Mount system for 2 years now and have it mostly working, but still some niggles. I had originally decided to jack it all in and go Sony simply because it would iron out those last few niggles...but at what cost? Well 10k+ to change cost actually and that is ultimately what stopped me. Or at least having to put up a 10% deposit on the new house which killed any available funds anyway! At the same time, I have not 'convinced' myself as such, but simply decided to sit tight (with a few changes in the lens department), use what I have and enjoy that until such a time in the future when it is right to make any further changes, whatever they may be. But otherwise, yes all of them are literally just one component away from having the 'perfect' tool, for me. Except Sigma FP which is about 17...but I still love it 😁

Well I've just edited 2 weddings where I used the OM-1 and have to say, dodged a bullet with that one. The 4k 50p is not even in the same conversation as Panasonic's S35 crop from full-frame. Not even in the conversation with the 8 bit out of the S1R. Thin and horrid colour. Trying to match it is a nightmare. Low light, rubbish. Fortunately, I only used it for long static stuff rather than a couple of hundred clips, but nope, thank fcuk I stuck with L Mount. You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming into 4/3rds World now 😜
