For me it is and all 6k capture these days being on the wagon re. slow mo. At least anything beyond 80% anyway. 4k for anything up to or around 10 mins for clients ie, wedding ‘films’, but longer stuff such as full ceremonies and speeches of 20-60 mins, always 1080 delivery from me.
-
It is a legit excuse isn’t it Tim? I’m trying to build a business case to shell out 20k+ on a body and 3 lenses…
-
I didn’t realise you had an OF channel. Where can I find it?

I don’t think it’s gimmicky, wrong term applied in this instance, but will most consumers make the most of any product? Maybe, maybe not, but without these things being added to mainstream bits of kit, those of us who are working pros at the lower levels, can have access that might not otherwise be possible. I’m all for the latest tech being added because whilst I might not use all of it, there is usually something lower down that I will. Also, of specific interest to me re. 8k, is that far superior ability to pull stills over 6k footage which is superior to 4k footage which is to 1080 etc… Still have not had the opportunity to properly explore that though made some tweaks to the settings on my last job to have a go from 6k footage. So tech is not always ‘tech for tech sake’, some of us, pro and non-pro, will at least explore if not fully utilise the capability. And then there is raw. Do I need raw? Nope. Are my cameras raw capable? Yep. Am I going to utilise that? Possibly/probably not, but I like the fact the option exists should I wish to without having to resort to changing my cameras to do so.
-
I’m not too bothered about that as everything I produce (wedding videos mainly) are for the rest of their lives and one argument might be to shoot in 8k just so that one day…but nah, not unless they wished to pay a massive premium…which gives me an idea… Option for client to have a ‘free’ upgrade from 4k to 6k (as I am already shooting in 6k, not that they know it) but offer a paid option to shoot and deliver in 8k to ‘future proof’ their memories. It would have to be a fairly hefty premium because for me that would mean a whole new 8k system of 3 bodies plus lenses, plus massively increased storage etc… Could also be an option for stills if they wished to print a 3x life size version of themselves on the side of their house and a legit excuse for me to buy a Hassie X2D 🤔

I work with multiple camera systems on every job; Sony, Lumix and DJI. Plus lenses that zoom in different directions; Sigma and Tamron, though I think I can change the direction of the Tamron’s with software but not done that yet. I’m also my own sound and light engineer. Proper multi-tasker me 😜

I’m happy with 6k. 6k for me is the sweet spot for cropping in post or stability cropping in camera and then outputting as either 4k or 1080. S5ii 6k is nicer to my eye than the 4k despite being 420 and not 422 and can be ‘degraded’ to be more ‘cinemantic’. Great for also cropping 9x16 for social media from 3:2 Open Gate.

Fair point. Which is one reason I really do not like changing kit…though I have ‘had’ to for years until recently, as I much prefer familiarity so the tools can largely get out of the way. I was only thinking just today how my main stills camera of just a couple of months, now feels very familiar. But for those having to rent, then yes, I can see how menus could be a real PITA.
-
I have near zero issues with any menu. Some take more learning than others and after you have your settings, how often do you use the things? Lumix are better than Sony I think and Nikon’s are pretty decent as were Fuji’s and the Leica and Hasselblad’s look excellent. But ultimately, as above, I hardly use menus other than before a job reformatting cards etc. I do like and use custom buttons though and have 3 settings on my video units; indoor, outdoor and ‘gimbal-like’. For my sole photo unit, also 3; uncompressed raw, compressed and APSC crop. For anything else, each camera has a single page quick menu for pretty much everything including; IBIS, WB, ISO, etc… Nah, menus aren’t that big a deal!
-
Which was my final camcorder, but then swapped it for kind of it’s more modern contemporary, the RX10ii ‘bridge’ camera…but those are also pretty much dead now.

The thing about the FP is apart from it being as cool as fuck, is it’s size/weight and the image it produces. I looked at every possible way of making it work for my needs including: L model for the AF. Rear tilt screen mod or rigging a monitor at the rear to use as a tilt (because not a fan of top mounted monitors). 24-105 f4 purely because of the OIS. SSD for the storage so not relying on a single SD card. Needs a cage and grip or just too unwieldy. But it kept coming back to the same thing which is other than the outright IQ, Lumix’s S5ii. And that is essentially what we want, - everything the S5ii can do, but in the FP body and with its IQ. Along with Tamron, my favourite line up of lenses. For zooms, Tamron but for primes, Sigma. However, if Sigma produce a longer focal length sibling to the recent 28-45mm f1.8 also with internal zoom, it’s game over for me. The 28-45 is almost a dead cert for next year for me for one of my systems, - either my Sony stills, or my Lumix video, but it will be determined by a number of factors and one of those (two actually) is what Lumix does with the next gen S1 line, or what Sigma do (if anything) with the FP line. If there is any next gen FP following on from the L, as long as it can tick a combination of various boxes, I reckon I’d go all in not just on L Mount, but all in on Sigma full stop. It’s up to Sigma, not me to make it happen, but FP-L with IBIS and tilt screen alone, that would be enough for me as those are the two things it doesn’t have that are the biggest deal breakers for me.

I’m going to bookmark this thread and make a note in my 2026 diary. There possibly may even be an unboxing video re. the 7d replacement?
-
Forgiven. Mention any of the following and I will also respond: OG X100 Pro1, Pro2 XH1 S1H …and others 😂
-
Please please please Sigma make another but with less deal-breakers (for me) (and many others). My ‘most wanted’ camera that I have never been able to own.
-
I tried, but mention of the Fuji triggered me into responding as did the mention of the S5. Plus I sometimes have too much time so 🤷♂️
-
S5 would be my pick of full frame mirrorless, but I couldn’t find any without increasing the budget by around 50%.
-
I shot weddings for 2 seasons on the X Pro1 having ditched my chunky boy Nikon D3S’s to do so. Very ‘film-like’ files from the second most ‘organic’ sensors after the OG X100. Plenty of fast f1.4 lenses to choose from. The X Pro2 is faster and arguably a better camera, but the files didn’t have quite the same magic…though again, became my workhorse units for another 2 seasons. If you are more ‘artistic’ orientated, the X Pro1 would be a good shout!

I think connoisseur-aficionado is the term you are looking for 😜 -

Not really… In fact I hate tech and prefer technique/craft any day, except gear is easier to ramble about I guess! Guilty of searching for the right tools specific to my needs for sure but that process has pretty much run its course now. I’m not ‘done’ for sure, but nothing I have now is a ‘stop gap’ or experiment, - it just works. The only thing I really want to do when it becomes possible and viable, is to bring it all in under one system and ideally, that would be L Mount. It’s not quite possible (or rather is if we’re being pedantic, but with some major compromises) but I think will be in 2025. It then just becomes a case of when for me. But gear and tech actually is of interest to a point, but it’s pretty low level to me and it’s more a case of: I need to do X. What options exist that will allow me to do X? If X is not available, how close can I get. I have probably had a higher number of X’s than most and have moved my own benchmarks for those X’s, but as above, that’s been more about necessity combined with a lot of trial & error, rather than any interest in ‘kit’. I don’t fit into any of the normal boxes. Never have and never will! -

For me, that's about the sum of it and almost every camera is there or thereabouts such as... The S1H didn't have the AF I needed or more recently, the LUT feature I wanted against the S5ii, which itself doesn't have the nicely damped shutter, the fully articulating and higher res rear screen plus the OLPF I'd prefer. My Z6ii was slow in comparison to my Zf, but the Zf had trash ergonomics. The Z6iii should have and perhaps has fixed that, but some lens issues for me. A few years back, the X1H had the ergos and nicer image, but the XT3 had the video specs, but the AF has always been a bit weak with Fuji. Not as trash as some make out, but not the best for sure. Does the 'perfect' exist? Kind of... For my work, I can't really fault the S5ii which is why I now have 3 of the things. For video. For stills or hybrid, nah, - we're back to that rear screen and the shutter mech etc. For stills, struggling to see past or fault my A7RV and the lens options I have...and the latter is only going to get better. For hybrid use, well that one doesn't really exist for me in any single unit. Internal ND would fix that if the rest of the spec was to my requirements and it was not at the expense of something like IBIS, which is why any future S2H/S2R is of particular interest to me because I would rather be within one single lens ecosystem. -

I considered that because well, it’s a Leica and I wanted to scratch that itch, but in the end, the S1R is just a better camera. If the SL2 had had an articulated screen though… The SL3 though is close to perfection for me except for one thing, - the price…which is again why I am hoping for a S2R and am currently slumming it with Sony whilst I wait 😂 -

We should have a marketplace here on the forum. I have a ton of stuff I can't be bothered to sell but would happily give away in return for the postage cost. -
Funnily enough, I watched that yesterday myself and as a result, decided to shoot a little wider and with a less shallow DOF. 2.8 has been my go to indoors because my fastest lens are 2.8 and typically 4 outdoors. I’ve had some really nice footage recently shooting f8 because I only had my 1-5 ND when it really needed the 6-9 but next job, I’m going to try and make David and Suresh proud…

I’d be happy with the halfway house of an option between the lens and body.
