There are nicer fountains in other places, some of them even doing light and music shows - but there are a bunch of celebrities and dentists who would like to explain to you how the very basic fountain in that photo gets all of the other stuff out of the way so that the observer can really just focus on the true joy of a fountain, moving water.

Panasonic added an S1H to the body of a Leica Q and nobody cares

David Burnett certainly seems to love his - at least, when he isn't hauling around a Speed Graphic. -
I bought my R5 shortly after Canon sorted out a bunch of the stupid overheating crap (like using a temperature sensor instead of a timer to determine when I could shoot again). At least for the sort of shooting that i do - either intermittent 1-2 minute tourist clips - or on set, overheating has never been any sort of problem when doing raw lite at 8k. I think I've only seen any sort of warning once or twice. It's too bad Canon shit the bed so hard during the initial release. It gave a bad reputation to an otherwise extremely usable and reliable camera with great image quality. My only complaints are that DR could be a bit better and that the IBIS could be described as "barely better than no IBIS." It's my go-to camera for traveling very light and/or incognito shooting. And yes, it says a lot that after 4 years, they released a follow-up that leaves me feeling no compulsion to upgrade and every time I think "Hey, maybe I should see what small cameras are out there, maybe swap out the Canon," I come away from my search thinking "Dang, that Canon ain't half bad."

The true Leicaman would understand that their cameras shouldn't be dirtied by the abhorrent presence of a third-party lens! You are correct to banish yourself to the shameful world of EOS R5 plebes! (One of the few worthwhile things on KR's site after all these years) https://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/leica-man.htm

It's not exactly a BF/CM deal, but keh have a holiday sale going with 10 or 20% off a bunch of stuff with code SL24. My Leica M collection grows (21/2.8) and my bank account weeps just a little bit more.

Ah, good point. They're probably sold out. It's gotta' be a really popular design.

Do they have one that looks like a pair of jeans festooned with bedazzler beads and puffy paint? If so, I have a GFX 100 II just a few feet away from me...

One should only buy a camera based on current features/accessories instead of on potential future stuff, but hopefully Megadap's announcement of an M to RF adapter with autofocus actually goes somewhere. My Leicas look beautiful on the R5. But then, they look beautiful on everything.

They were literally called "cine-nikkor."

Something is nagging at me to go back to smaller sensor
eatstoomuchjam replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
IMO, shallow DOF should usually be shallow enough to separate talent from background and draw the eye to the talent, but without obliterating the background into a mess of shapeless blobs of color. Exceptions may be made for extremely dramatic moments, especially if the talent is intended to seem alone - or on the other side, if setting the talent in a specific place in a wide. A lot of the main YouTubers would have people believe that "cinematic" footage involves continuously moving the camera without any reason for it. I've also received some looks from younger filmmakers in my area when they're onset as a PA or similar for shoots that I'm doing - when I'm putting the 20-pound Komodo-X kit on sticks, they sort of roll their eyes at the old fuddy duddy. It's cool, though - as you've pointed out, Spielberg does a lot on sticks and I challenge any of them to explain why Fincher's work isn't "cinematic." Not that I'm Spielberg, Fincher, or any of their DP's... but a strong composition with the camera on sticks is ideal for some things. Switching to handheld for narrative purposes is one of the specific reasons that I bought the Ronin 4D. Now I have the options of locked down with the K-X, shaky handheld with the OG Komodo which is rigged to be under half the weight of the K-X, and fairly smooth gimbal handheld with the Ronin. I used it on a shoot yesterday and it's the best experience I've ever had with a gimbal on set. Anyway, having been mostly S35 for my shoots in the last year, I've been finding it a real pleasure and I've missed FF a lot less than I thought, especially once I got the Fujinon MK set. In general, I'd say S35 is great in a practical sense - shallow enough DOF at t/2.8-5.6 to be pleasing, but not so shallow that pulling focus gives an aneurysm by the end of a long day on set. -
Are you asking IronFilm for more links beyond those that Davide DB was already kind enough to provide you?

ARRI ALEXA 265 - new 65mm camera - size of Alexa 35 Mini!
eatstoomuchjam replied to PannySVHS's topic in Cameras
For the most part, measurements/comparisons won't matter too much. The Alexa 65 is going to get used on a bunch of Hollywood productions and the 12K/17K will get used will get used on sets where budget matters and where the entire cost of buying the 12K is about the same as renting the Alexa for 2-3 days. π -
The balloon lights that I got have replaceable batteries - so at least that saves the e-waste of throwing away the entire unit! The batteries not rechargeable, though, so it's still not ideal. The Black Magic version looks nice! And agreed that the blues are a bit nicer and less skewed toward purple!

Which other deals? Right now, the S9 is showing for $1,299 on their site - though with the free 26mm lens, as you mentioned. Not quite in the sub-$1k range yet (at least that I can see) https://shop.panasonic.com/products/s9-full-frame-mirrorless-camera-mint-green

Cameraimage cinematography festival in the bin
eatstoomuchjam replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
He got less than 50% of the vote. You're not part of any "majority." At best, that'd be the "deplorable plurality." Either way, you're talking pure bullshit and making false equivalencies also about political prosecutions. You have dangerously impaired critical thinking skills and should excuse yourself from any sort of public discussion about complicated topics so that you don't continue embarrassing yourself and your country. -
Balloon lights would have been my first suggestion and you already found them. I just shot a short film and for part of it, I needed a tiny light to fit inside a dessicated/taxidermied bird head (to show that it contained a demon's soul, as these things do) and it was perfect for that. Short of wiring up your own stuff, I'm not sure you'll find a lot of small battery-powered lights that are smaller than what you already found. If it were me, I'd use a very cool white light for the ambient light vs blue - right now, the nighttime vibe might be a little oversold, but otherwise that's all very cute! Good job!

Biden pardoning his son was wrong, obviously, but stop with the idiotic fucking false equivalency bullshit. Biden makes one obviously selfish pardon and you dumbshits are all clutching your pearls and acting shocked as though this shit never happened before - yet the other guy pardoned, among other things, his political advisor/strategist, his campaign chairman, the father of his son-in-law, his propagandist, and other allies - many of whom were prosecuted by his own department of justice, not the other team. https://www.newsweek.com/list-who-donald-trump-has-pardoned-1993998 -
MTF services are a lot more affordable, on the other hand. https://mtfservices.com/products/fuji-mk-lens-conversion-from-e-to-sony-fz-mount?_pos=1&_sid=b99bda7ff&_ss=r Pair that with a used price of about $1,400-1,500 each for the 18-55 and the 50-135 and you've got a $3.5k T2.9 lens set covering everything from 18-135mm (depending on sensor size, that's 24-27mm on the wide end and 180-200mm on the long end). Oh yeah, and each lens is fully parfocal (after about a 5 minute back focus calibration) and has 0 breathing. Oh, and the image is beautiful with great falloff and smooth bokeh, and imo it's sharp without being clinical, but also keep in mind that I've used mine exclusively on a Komodo-X which has OLPF which renders most lenses less clinically sharp than they really are. π The only real drawbacks that I've found so far are that using the macro switch might knock my backfocus adjustment slightly out of whack (I still need to verify, but it seems to be the common factor in both cases - both times, I still had usable images, but with the focus noticeably slightly off) and that on the K-X, I have to take off the hood when using any lens wider than around 22mm or I'll get a hard vignette in the corners. With the hood off, there's plenty of coverage. Anyway, IMO a used MK set is the best value in cinema nowadays. And shoots are going a lot faster without me swapping primes every 20 minutes. π

Guess it was 90% of Avatar 2, from what I googled! Won't my collaborators be thrilled to learn that I'm shooting their films with the Avatar 2 lens! π Also, no need to wait for a Fujinon MK for Z Mount if there's a decent APS-C that has it - there's already a Z mount to Sony E adapter and E mount MK. That or just wait for somebody like Duclos or MTF services to make an adapter kit. Swapping the mount is pretty straightforward (and used copies aren't too expensive)

FWIW, if you're using EF lenses (or lenses that can adapt to EF), the C70 is vaguely like full frame, as Canon's EF-RF speed booster is good and can be bolted on so that it doesn't wobble. It's a great suggestion. Gorgeous image. In the $3k range, one might also consider a used Komodo (still S35 so maybe not ideal for you) or if you want a camera radically different from your other cameras, a used Ronin 4D 6K (I just paid about $3k for mine thanks to the BF sale from lensrentals.com). Having owned it for one day, I can already say that I wouldn't have it as my only camera, but it's unique among my cameras. I also got a native M mount for it - swapping was easy and was quickly using my Leica glass. Now I just need to wait for the focus motor to show up (and to come up with some way of getting a focus gear for my 35/2 and 24/2.8 which have the silly Leica tab on them, but that will also fit in the small space available for focus gears.

Why Donβt Cameras Have Better Built In Screens?
eatstoomuchjam replied to Alt Shoo's topic in Cameras
Do you mean the Osmo Pro and Osmo Raw which used the Zenmuse X5 (shared with one of the Inspire drones)? They didn't come with any screen at all - maybe one was available as an add-on purchase, though. The way I used my Osmo Raw was with my phone as the screen (which does make for a big/nice screen). The Ronin 4D, FWIW, has a pretty big screen as well - not as big as a BM Pocket 6K, but definitely bigger than most mirrorless cameras. -
I should add that the lensrentals code seems to work for more than one item - I added both the Ronin and the Leica M mount for the Ronin and the discount applied to both.
-
lensrentals.com has their BF sale going. Use code LRBF2024 for 20% off any of their used gear. It brought the Ronin 4D 6K down into the $3k price range where I always thought it made sense - so... I guess that in a week or so, a Ronin will be at my door. Now the hard part comes where I try to figure out which of my existing cameras I should sell...

Stop buying stuff with internal/non-replaceable batteries!
eatstoomuchjam replied to newfoundmass's topic in Cameras
Apple, among others. With Airpods, you can spend $49 per Airpod for "battery service," but from what I've been told, they just swap them out for entirely new Airpods and recycle the old ones. -
New Sony 28-70mm f/2 Lens, and a new flagship camera the Alpha 1 II
eatstoomuchjam replied to IronFilm's topic in Cameras
There are 31 functional bodies on mpb in the US right now ranging from $4,100 to $4,600. Though Komodos are also $4,000 to $4,500 and more than a month ago after the price drop on new models, I bid on one on ebay and got it for $2,950. A few months after the A1 II starts shipping, I'd be willing to bet that you'd be able to score one for <3k on ebay. π
