I know it would be nice though because the recorder could act as an external monitor. That is the only way to monitor on the g7

The hdmi is 8 bit. I am also curious how an external recorder would work with this. I don’t have one but you may not be able to change the frame rate as when using the internal lcd the settings take effect once pressing the record button...which is also when the g7 shuts off external output

Yes this is true. NTSC g85 gets unlimited recording, PAL version does not. You can hack PAL versions to switch to NTSC but you lose 25p and 50p, only 24, 30, and 60p. The g7 hacked has unlimited 4K in PAL and both unlimited 4K and unlimited avchd 1080p in NTSC. The ntsc gh4 is region unlocked and has no record limits whatsoever without a hack. The fz2500 is the same.

Yeah. Or you can use an external recorder to shoot 220mbps all-i prores. The Sony a6000, like the gh3, has a beefy 50mbps codec combined with a solid 1080p image. it’s sensor is also larger. Has anyone used the g7 with an external recorder? Can you change the frame rate when recording externally and not internally?

I agree. Although it’s not hard to get with a cheap ninja 2 recorder. The 1080p Panasonic gives is great but wish we got that beefy all I codec. YouTube Nigel barrow does a lot of content on the Panasonic gh3 and older cams like that. I like his channel. He said that the all-I codec grades worse and has more noise than the 50mbps intra-frame codec. Probably because infra-frame is more efficient. *Nigel Barros (not Nigel barrow)

Thanks for the feedback. The appeal of this camera for me is having such a versatile lens that does great wide and telephoto. My g7 gets a nice shallow dof with my 25mm 1.8 lens, so having a second camera that is so versatile would be nice. It would be hard to match though, @webrunner5. Any other ideas of a b-camera? The lx100 seems nice as it is the same price used as a Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 but the lens included is even better. Also the Panasonic gx85 might be nice.

Just tried the unlimited record mod on my black panasonic g7 and it worked. Over 1hr of 4K recording listed. I will post the firmware version soon. Also this only affects 4K as 1080p has record limit unless in avchd

Sorry I keep posting so much, I just have a lot of questions on cameras right now. Not trying to spam. I’ve looked into the original Sony rx10 as a b-cam to my g7 (I shoot 1080 on my g7 a lot.). How is the shallow depth of field with the smaller sensor? This camera is attractive because it gives me a nice wide angle and nice telephoto, as on my g7 I generally have a 25mm meike prime lens on. Any thoughts?

Looking for a second camera to the g7. Would a dji osmo action as a wide shot mayby on a slider look good? I’d shoot in hdr mode. Or what about an iPhone with filmic pro log v2?

For those hd g7 shooters like myself if you have the ntsc version, shooting 1080p 24fps in avchd you have no record limit. I have successfully recorded over 30 minutes with this. There are also hacks to get unlimited 4K, but it might not work anymore. I haven’t tried. Biggest gripe I have is not being able to use an external monitor plus the internal focus peaking never wants to actuallly show up much.

Can you change the settings while recording? Also would love an iOS version as I don’t have android.

I wish I did that but I have already owned the g7 for a year. At least it’s still a great camera.
