I went to B&H last weekend and S5, Z6, A7 size difference was negligible (IMO). Only when you got to S1/S1H did it feel like DSLRs of old. And there was not a huge difference to APS-C like Z30, Fuji, A6000, and then lens size is still pretty similar. To get a meaningful difference would have to go down to M4/3, X100V, RX1R, or point and shoot imo. Re: S9, XS-20 unfortunately they both are still $1.1-1.2k used. Also wouldn't the lack of mechanical shutter pose an issue for stills (probably not pottery since it's static). Hmmm I just switched from the 13 Pro to an old iPhone SE I had laying around to reduce the scrolling so probably not upgrading to 16 Pro anytime soon. I think instead of manual control I should have said not having to work around the camera and just being able to shoot. I feel like you have to mess around with iPhone so much I would just prefer to use an actual camera. I haven't looked at the computational shallow DOF in awhile but not impressed with the portrait mode on the 13 Pro. I think you underestimate social media video quality a bit lol. Yup. That is why I am allocating half (at least) to lighting and accessories. Hmm that is pretty funny re the Markus Guy. Haven't had a chance to check out his videos but will when I get home. Any horror stories re Lensrentals used stuff? They have the S5 for $810/730 depending on quality but they are also a rental house so a bit cautious on their quality. https://www.lensrentals.com/buy/panasonic-lumix-dc-s5 KEH is $880 https://www.keh.com/shop/panasonic-lumix-dc-s5-mirrorless-full-frame-digital-camera-body-black-24-2-m-p.html MPB is $870 https://www.mpb.com/en-us/product/panasonic-lumix-dc-s5 Adorama is $870 https://www.adorama.com/us1914794.html

I'm hoping that isn't a huge issue as pulling the clay is not crazy fast, and I try not to make those mistakes that often :). Yeah I am not sure I need 10 bit log tbh. Don't think intra frame compression matters either if the wheel is just rotating in place. How is the color SOOC with minimal editing for the Panasonic vs Nikon? Somehow the Fuji XT-3 is around $850 in the US due to all the Fuji hype from YT :(. It was my first thought too Hmm Anamorphic seems interesting to play around but in the far, far, future I think main problem with S1 is size (would like to be able to take the camera to galleries or on the street) and +$250 in price. Is manual focus such a huge issue with focus peaking and a static subject? I plan to tape where the tripod sits and mostly never move it. Eventually I would like to film some interviews/short studio tours with artists when I go to Asia to visit family this summer but I am not so sure I need AF for that. Also thank you everyone for the suggestions. I think I am going to pick up the S5 from B&H this weekend unless there is a huge difference to the Z6 in terms of color science.

Yep I already am doing that with my iPhone 13 Pro and planning to use that as my A/B cam to start (most likely to get hte wide angle shot). Altho I need to get a new tripod and phone mount because the one I bought in Japan for $15 disintegrating. I just loathe the lack of manual adjustability on the phone. Pottery (vlogging) on social media these days is also kind of saturated. I am not looking to become a vlogger but I am hoping filming with more careful framing, lighting, and depth of field.

Good idea. I hadn't even thought of that option but I will definitely get one! Thanks for the advice. I think a time lapse feature would be useful for hand building but for throwing its a bit too slow to match the movement. I will definitely try to post a video here once I get up and running. That guys seems to be right up my alley with the janky alternatives lol. Hmm definitely leaning towards the S5 then if record limit is not going to be an issue. How are the colors SOOC? Like I said to start I tend to overthink things so hoping to get a few videos out there with minimal editing/setup and learn the more advanced stuff as I go.

Thank you for the recommendations. Meant to say sub $1k for body + adapted 50mm vintage lens. Tbh I am not sure if I need that level of audio and lighting yet at the moment. I feel like you give too much away with the GH5/4 in photo. This guy is doing pretty well and his setup is 5D MkIII, Canon Primes, LED panel lights from amazon, Manfrotto 055 Tripod, and natural light. IDK if he even color grades his videos. I have a tendency to overcomplicate things tbh. This is my current list: I think $500-600 for storage, lighting, tripod, mic is doable if ordering from Aliexpress. Not sure if you are aware but most low end tripods (Smallrig, Leofoto, Sirui, Benro, etc) are white labled from the same factories and you can order from the factory brand via Aliexpress for 1/2-2/3 the price. I have not fully done the research but I'm assuming/hoping it is the same for lighting. My studio is in the basement so not a huge amount of natural light. Not even sure where to start regarding lighting but this is the list I've built up.

Hmm maybe I am overestimating the storage needed. I would say longest I would like to continuously record would be around 45min-1hr but I would like to shoot 2-3 of those videos a session without having to transfer the data to an external SSD. To start out it is not necessary (4k and 10bit probably overkill tbh) but would be something nice to have in the future. It seems that beyond 128gb the price of SD cards jump up a lot. Is there a huge difference between the Z6 and A7III in video? A7III is still about $1k mark while I can get a refurbished Z6 from B&H for $750. Panasonic S5 is around $730 from Lens Rentals. S1 is still sitting around $1k and S1H is around $1.4k unfortunately.

Title says it all but here are some more details. I don't make any money from my ceramics yet so looking to keep it under $1k. My current top choices are either the Nikon Z6 or Panasonic S5. Mainly looking at full frame as I used a Fujifilm XT-2 for mostly street photography while traveling and felt like the sensor size limited my framing options and depth of field. This also might be down to the 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens tbh. Unfortunately I gave that camera to my brother so need to get a new one. My use case: taking photos of my ceramics to post to social media/show to galleries taking videos of making ceramics to grow my social media presence some street/architectural/landscape photography on the side My current criteria: Sub $1k for body + 50mm lens, sub $1.5k including tripod, mic, basic lighting, storage 4k recording so I have options to crop in vertical or horizontal Unlimited recording time so I don't have to fiddle with camera with muddy hands (wish) Record externally to SSD thru USB C (wish) Easy workflow as I am new to video why I am not considering 5D MkIII w/ ML Upgrade progression in mount. I plan to eventually get another camera so I can have a B cam and film multiple angles S5IIX would be good enough for every use case I can think of but Nikon RED acquisition looks interesting too. Nikon still can't record externally to SSD tho My questions: Do I actually need 10bit or Log if the content is mainly being seen on Social Media and I am mainly in a studio where I can control exposure/lighting Is down sampling the 4k 8 bit of the Z6 to 1080p enough? Is there any alternative to Ninja V if I want to record externally to SSD, outside of going up in budget to the S5IIX or Sigma Fp Does it even matter if I choose Z6 or S5 if I am only using vintage lenses to start and eventually get a Ninja V Here are some examples videos from artists I admire

Best value 4K mirrorless camera under £1000, let's rank them

Hmm if my needs were for mostly filming and photographing my pottery for social media which would you choose between S5 and Z6? Probably mostly shots of static subjects in a studio so AF not so important (not sure about 8bit vs 10bit) Edit: made a separate topic to not throw this one completely off track -
Western governments are criminally negligent over Coronavirus
alsoandrew replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Yes of course, Im just tryingt o point out how overplayed and inaccurate that talking point is. Here in the US we have Trump who almost certainly initially downplayed the Coronavirus because of the threat imposed to his reelection and fired the officials responsible for responding to events like these months prior. And we also have officials who were aware of the threat but did nothing except sell their stocks. And only on Friday was there a coordinated response to manufacture supplies. -

The analysis of the response to COVID19 for Taiwan, HK, and SG is flwaed. In HK and Taiwan there was already a ton of political tension in the months leading up to the virus so the amnt of Chinese visitors is actually quite low. the monthly number of Chinese travellers to Taiwan for example went down 50% from 200k last year to around 90k this year. This is less thann most popular destinations in Europe. In HK its the entry rate from mainand China even lower due to the protests. Monthly Chinese visitors to Japan is around 500k while in SK its around 700k. SK is an example of what happens when you respond quickly to the threat. Japan will probably have a major outbreak soon. They just avoided the initial peak. Italy has a lot of critical cases as their population is more elderly and it is more common for households to be comprised of multiple generations. In Germany this is the opposite with more people living alone. This is why the death rate isn't as bad, yet. -
If you read this statement glass half full sounds like 8K RAW is likely (may or may not be limited), with Canon's imagined use case is either an amazing burst mode of 20+ fps and a Olympus/Panasonic mode thats always taking photos and lets you select the best one after the fact. Or down sampling to 4k 4:4:4. Also Sony isn't exactly pulling a Canon. From a resources management standpoint it doesn't make that much sense to spend money on their imaging department when they make so much money from their sensor department and supply everyone elses sensors anyways (except Canon). UNlike Canon who stagnated because of overconfidence and cockiness, and probably the sweet bonuses that the executives could write themselves from money saved on R&D (or lack thereof). Although I hink the trigger for Sony to step up will be the same as Canon's, declining sales of their cameras and lenses as a whole. At that point its too much money lost to ignore.

very interesting. How were you able to find it if I might ask?

...bedside table feature films of your current life

This movie was amazing, re watched it twice and I wish I could watch it again in a movie theater for the full 2D to 3D effect. -
This is because of YTs new algorithm, they only reccomend you content that is very similar/from the same channel because they seem to think that will lead to more clicks which means more ad revenue. That is also why uploading frequently and engagment is said to be more important to get views/growth. Are agents pretty common in the industry? I know a couple of people who have had the company (Squaretrade or VPN etc) contact them directly but I never heard of agents before you mentioned it. Also I really enjoy your videos, suprised you are on this forum!

Also if you looked at the Japanese comments on the video before it was deleted, they are all saying that his photgraphy style is just voyeurism, which as mentioned before is a much bigger problem here in the East than the West. They also said it could be considered a type of assault and that Suzuki's photography style should be outlawed, which is ridiculous, but all it takes is one bad instance and a populist lawmaker for it to become reality.

I wonder how many people commenting on this thread are aware of the strict respect Japanese have the personal space of others in public spaces, to the point of never talking above a whisper in public transportation, following traffic, and minding their own business to an extreme, to the point of ignoring people with severe alcohol poisoning (i have witnessed this too many times). Additionally, it is not uncommon for women in Japan to be groped while in a crowd, especially on subways. It is also pretty common for creeps to try to take upskirt photos. I think everyone can agree that doing something like that is a definite violation of personal space. Also in Japan IME there is a greater fear of creepy people as there have been a few recent cases of rape/murders and it isn't an uncommon thing in tv shows or movies or other Japanese media. Japan has female exclusive subway cars and no groping alarms on smartphones for this specific reason. The problem has existed for a number of years but has only been brought to light recently because Japan is getting more socially progressive. And also as other people mentioned, even if you photograph someone in Japan, even upskirt, you're likely to get away with it scott free. People think its more embarrassing to call out the person/slap them than to just pretend like nothing happened. If you consider that the management that green lighting the Ads have probably been with the company since they graduated University until their current age of 40+ and are probably quite conservative/old fashioned, it makes sense how this was initially approved but then removed after public feedback Hopefully when you view the Ad in this context, plus where many of the subjects shown are pretty women, plus his creepy/smug smile afterwards every shot, you can see why it has triggered the response (and action from Fuji). And yes you can say that the advertising is not just domestic so why should Fujifilm conform to those rules. But Fujifilm is a Japanese company, the photographer is Japanese, and it's filmed in Japan. Go to Europe if you want to do this type of thing. I don't think they should've have removed him from their X program though. That was a stupid move by them imo

That's not the point. The video I linked is just an extreme example. The point is that some people can cheat the system/algorithm to then get actual viewers, getting ahead of other YTers who may have better content but are less willing/not aware of less scrupulous tactics.
-
well you could also buy subscribers until you got enough actual viewers...it must happen quite often if stuff like this goes unreported
