  1. I agree, I never use the GoPro in any situation where I can economically use another camera. With that being said I do think it is possible to hide the fact it is GoPro footage. If you keep the GoPro very level to minimize barrel distortion, only shoot with plenty of light, properly white balance, shoot using the flat profile and use the WFM in Davinci Resolve to conform it to Rec.709 then apply a final grade on top; people tend to think my underwater and POV footage was shot with my main camera. The problem with most GoPro footage is it is created by people who let the GoPro do whatever it wants in Auto mode. I think gimbals still have their uses mainly when you need to follow the talent or want to do advanced movements like crane, dolly, truck, etc....but if these are just for personal or holiday videos I definitely would not get a gimbal. Way too much hassle, throw the GoPro on a selfie stick, turn on HyperSmooth and call it a day. I don't know what your audio situation is currently, but if I were in your situation and money was burning a hole in my pocket I'd probably focus on upgrading the audio, getting a travel monopod, etc....endless options. My monopod gets used more than any other stabilization gear I own. Monopods help both for quick lowlight photography shots to run and gun or travel video situations where you just need a few seconds of stable footage.   2. I've never used ebay to sell anything due to stories like yours. I only use Craigslist, only accept cash, and only meet in person. Craigslist has its own long list of problems and you will deal with some of the biggest time wasters ever, but when it's a cash only in person transaction the scammer and returns problems are non existent. I sold my 5DIII, some lenses, and a couple of drones this way.
  3. I agree completely with kye, only you can decide which route best suits your needs. I have a GoPro and it is awesome for underwater shots and POV shots, that's the only thing I use mine for. Underwater is something I would never try with my other cameras but with the GoPro it greatly increased the production value for my real estate tour videos, music videos, and swimsuit videos. I have the Hero 8 and it has a flat profile option which makes it pretty easy to color grade as long as the lighting conditions were well controlled. Picking between a GoPro and a gimbal is a bit of an odd dilemma, but if I had to pick one it would still depend upon the type of work that you do. I used to put my camera on a gimbal for everything but lately I've been shooting more handheld, monopod, and tripod. Gimbals are great when you first discover them, but after the newness wears off you realize what a hassle they are and how they are not required for many shots.
  4. Lets not forget that a lot of posters act like they are producing Hollywood blockbusters. I realized long ago my avg viewer will view my content at 480P on a cell phone. I think in this day and age specs just don't matter. I care more about things like reliability, ecosystem, and ergonomics than video specs. You beat me to it. I almost didn't get the C200 because of all of the bad press over no 10bit recording options. But after watching a few videos and truly not being able to tell the difference I got the C200 anyway. What Canon did with the 4:2:0 8bit that comes out of that camera is nothing short of incredible. They truly do hold back some secret sauce that is nowhere to be found in their DSLRs. I have yet to shoot raw with the C200 or feel the need to.
  5. Actually in this case yes....I do think absolutely no one should buy the R5 and the R6..want to know why? Because every single buyer of these two cameras proves to Canon that they can get away with selling a camera that is unfit for purpose. So as long as buyers keep rewarding Canon for putting out products that are unfit for purpose guess what Canon is going to keep doing? Canon IMO is closer than anyone else to creating the perfect hybrid camera (AF, Color Science, ecosystem, lenses, form factor, etc.), unless people vote with their wallets they have no incentive to change that last 10%.
  6. I never thought I would be so proud of my GH5 in 2020. I will admit I did not think it was possible to get it to overheat but then when he explained the conditions and I realized it probably reached over 160F it made sense. I do wish he had kept it at 4K60 in the shade then it would have been a better test. For all we know it might not have overheated at 4K24 in the sunlight just like it might have overheated again at 4K60 in the shade.

I don't think a cage would make much difference, at least not the ones I'm using, I would think you need enough shade to actually block a substantial amount of the solar radiation, a few pieces of metal around a camera body probably isn't enough. I'm just going to sit all of these camera bodies out and wait to see what's next. I live in FL, months out of the year the temps exceed 30C with plenty of days reaching 35C. A normal part of my workflow is to leave gear in my car when I'm shooting with other gear (i.e. leave my video setup in my car while doing a photo shoot), no way will any of these cameras be reliable after pulling them from a 48C hot car.

I love the specs on them and the fact they were able to keep it cool in such a small body should really make Canon take notice; I guess I just love the Canon ecosystem so much that I keep hoping something will make them get their act together. In the meantime my current setup works well enough for me that I don't foresee myself buying anything new anytime soon. It is ironic though, the Sigma has better specs than even the rumored Canon Komodo form factor it really speaks volumes to just how restrictive Canon really is. I agree with you, if they implemented 4K60 even with a crop that would make it more attractive....the fixed back screen does suck though, I love my GH5's screen.

To me the Sigma cameras just seem too small to be comfortable, they use the L mount lenses which is yet another system I would have to buy into, and they don't do 4K60FPS which I use literally all the time in my GH5 for speed ramps and gimbal work. I have a sigma 18-35mm for my C200 and a Sigma 50mm for my 5DIV; both lenses are fantastic (although the 18-35 is noisier than I would prefer) but I've never considered their cameras worth investigating.
  10. First off who resurrected this zombie thread? Anyway, like gt3rs says, 4:2:2 H.265 is not supported at least not yet in the NVIDIA GPUs as you can see from the following chart. I do hope it is something that can be fixed with a driver update and not some sort of HW shortcoming. I have a Core i9 14 core CPU and an RTX 2080 Ti and my system still had problems editing R5 4:2:2 footage. I was able to get smooth playback initially but it stuttered a bit between clips and after applying two layers of color grading in Davinci Resolve it was unuseable. https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix
  11. I think it will depend on the profit margins for those products. If they keep reusing sensors and tech across bodies and manage to keep the margins high enough they could be profitable given enough volume. Canon and Nikon's strategy has typically been to flood the market with 'starter' cameras (Rebel series) then if the customer started getting serious about photography get them to move up to a more professional line (7D, 5D, 1D). The problem is the world is moving past photography and into video and as it does, neither Canon or Nikon adjusted as fast as Sony did. Sony saw a gap in their lineup and went for it. And apparently it is working for them....at least for now. This is why I say Sony is Canon's biggest problem.   12. The best part about their test is it was only 27C, it was 35C here in FL today with 64% humidity and the interior of a car here can easily reach 49C if you have to leave your equipment in your car for any reason.
  13. I have two conspiracy theories of my own: Theory 1 - Canon had no choice but to release this camera exactly like it is. They knew the A7SIII was going to be announced any day and upper leadership told the engineers that they did not have 6 months to develop a new body and cooling solution so they decided to release it anyway; with this strategy they will reel in whoever is blindly loyal enough to buy it with all of its shortcomings while buying themselves some time to release an updated model within the next 6 months or so; basically a page from Sony's playbook and a continuation of the EOS R stopgap approach. Theory 2 - This is their first run at IBIS and they didn't expect it to to really overheat this much in real world use. They also maybe didn't account for just how much of the world is hot and humid and they underestimated the fallout from an overheating limitation vs. a known software cripple hammer. So now they are in a bunch of boardroom meetings trying to decide if they should raise their very conservative recovery timer while risking shortening the life of the camera body by letting the internal temps rise higher than they do now and while returning usability faster than the current timer allows both of which will probably end up frying the camera in the long run but after the warranty runs out. In my opinion both theories still come to the same conclusion...these cameras are not fit for purpose let alone a camera that can comfortably be used as primary production video camera on a professional set (Canon's marketing materials not my words). So yea, they set the expectations very high and we are perfectly entitled to be pissed off that it doesn't live up to their own marketing hype.
  14. Is anyone buying Sigma? I don't feel like they have a chance in making a dent in the current market conditions. I have never seen them in any camera store or local retailer, maybe they are having better luck overseas. Fuji is in the same boat, the only way you an buy a Fuji around here is online, even Panasonic is a rare find in any local store. Every display case around here is filled with Canon, Sony, and Nikon. The reason I am mentioning retailers is because to be successful they need to sell a ton of lower end cameras to impulse buyers who typically buy at local retailers, just selling to pros online is not a way to be successful in the camera market, in my opinion.
  15. You are looking at tech specs and actual operating performance, not the reality. The reality is that Canon fell way behind in the mirrorless segment and took both Nikon and Canon by surprise. Especially when it comes to mirrorless video Canon had no real answer until the R5 and R6 and look how they are turning out. Personally I doubt I will ever buy a Sony and I dislike everything about their products but I still think if it weren't for Sony Canon would have been perfectly happy to keep selling 30 different DSLR models, severely crippling each one in some iexplicable way and the EOS R, RP, R5 and R6 wouldn't exist today. I've been saying that for awhile....Sony is an opportunist, they saw a mirrorless opportunity and they took it. If the competition with Canon becomes too severe I feel they would have no problems moving on. I also think Nikon may not recover from this one....between cell phones, Canon, the pandemic, and Sony I think Nikon is on the way out. I truly hope Panasonic sticks around, if they had just done something about their AF back in the GH4 days they would be a lot better off; one problem they have though is that they just like Nikon gets their sensors from Sony so they are kind of stuck with whatever Sony decides to develop.
  16. Ok so I guessed at how long I've had my 5DIV, I guess from now on I should go look at my purchase receipt and scan that in to ensure I am more precise. We are talking about video here and until Canon provides CLOG3 for the R5 the DR statement is still accurate, but yes the context was video and the current R5's CLOG implementation. You are free to ignore whoever you want, it wouldn't affect me in the slightest either way.
  17. That is true, I just think Sony is the main destination system for Canon users. Any exodus would get Canon's attention; Sony in particular though seems to be stealing both photography and video shooters from Canon. Panasonic is mainly video shooters, Nikon shooters probably never left Nikon (and lately I get the feeling Nikon may go the way of Olympus but maybe that's just me), and Fuji seems to be more of a niche. Sony in particular is the one that came from behind and keeps giving user's what they want in both the photography and video world despite the fact that they have a cinema line as well.

  19. Did you hear that the hackers did not ask for money? Their only demands were a heatsink, larger body, no overheating, and an apology from the false marketing team. In exchange they promised that Canon can have their 10TB of files back....so all 12min of their 8K raw files.
  20. They are still unfit for my purposes but I am glad he mentioned some limitations that almost no reviewers are discussing like the card recording and record limits. I feel like he gave Canon a bit too much of a pass as well but like you said...vendors are not going to give reviewers products if they know they will be completely slammed by those reviewers. IMO the R5 and R6 are more than just a marketing fail...they are an actual failure of epic proportions that may not get fixed unless buyers keep voting with their wallets and exiting to Sony in droves. Every buyer of the R5 and R6 are just a vote in Canon's favor letting them know their grand bait and switch strategy worked.
  21. Gerald Undone has done it again, incredible review of the R5 and R6. I am also so glad someone finally pointed out that you cannot do backup recording with either camera and that record limits in 2020 are stupid...so many people seem to not care about those things. He also reached the same conclusions that I reached......they aren't true hybrid cameras without an external monitor. I get it, I shoot handheld with my C200 all the time and it has no IBIS but due to it's weight I don't even notice; there's also ways to reduce rolling shutter distortion without GS (cameras with faster scan times, slower camera movements, etc.) and like I mentioned I would love a GS, but I still find IBIS more useful than a GS because for the types of projects that I work on RS is not a problem for me but camera operator shakiness is (hand holding a GH5 I'd pick IBIS any day over a GS). With a GS but no IBIS I would have to make the GH5 heavier, use a gimbal more often, use stabilized lenses (currently my MFT lenses are 100% manual), etc.
  23. I get they have come a long way, but that doesn't mean I have to go buy one just to try it out. I don't change systems with every fad like some people seem to do, my motto is chase the technique don't chase the technology. It's crazy to me when I read someone switched from Canon to Sony to Panasonic and now are thinking about coming back to Canon. I have exactly two systems, GH5 / MFT and Canon (C200 and 5DIV). If Canon gets their act together I'll be down to one system; Canon, so unless Canon goes bankrupt Sony will never be a part of the future for me.

I think you are missing the point that myself and kye are making.....IBIS can smooth out some of the natural shakiness that comes from hand holding footage; GS cannot, just because it is a GS does not mean it can smooth out shakiness it just means that it won't be wavy when it occurs. So my point is, would I prefer nice straight lines as the camera shakes (GS), or would I prefer to eliminate the shakiness altogether (IBIS). To further extrapolate that comparison; if I had to pick between a camera that could eliminate a lot of shakiness at the expense of wavy lines in some situations (rolling shutter) vs. one that does nothing to eliminate shakiness but has nice straight lines when making quick camera movements; I'm going to pick eliminating the shakiness (IBIS). Just because a GS can handle fast camera movements better than a RS doesn't mean it does anything for shakiness; to me shakiness is far more perceptible to non videographers than rolling shutter distortion. And yes, I am aware that after a certain level of shakiness IBIS can no longer compensate, so for the purposes of these examples I am referring to those instances where the level of shakiness is within the operating parameters of the IBIS system. Of course a GS with IBIS would be the best of both worlds but if I had to pick I'd pick IBIS over GS.
  25. The Edelkrone SliderONE is built like a tank and seems like it could be a good product but it's useless if you can't get the app to connect. I used it on two shoots and both times it took longer to get the app to connect than it would have taken to just use a gimbal and settle for a less steady shot. So yea, it's another $500 product gathering dust in my drawer.
