Canon EOS R5 / R6 overheating discussion all in one place
Nezza replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I don't see how this is a quick fix either. It needs a redesign of its overall thermal management and probably other areas. That's not something you do in a few days let alone weeks. Then you have the production line tooling that also needs to change. This will all take time. Naive to think it can be done quickly. Sure they can jack up the thermometer max value a bit and push out a firmware but that's not going to get you more than a few more minutes recording which (rightly) won't satisfy customers. -

This is the problem. Canon marketed it as a video camera from the outset. The canboys shout 'But, but, but stills!' Sure it's an excellent stills camera but that's not how it was sold. Canon shouted about 8K from the rooftops. -

Throwing stones? I'm just repeating back what you and a few others have done. These are facts. Accusing Gerald Undone of being a shill was a particular low point. I think we can see who's behaviour needs examining. -

There's a few on here (thankfully only a few) that: + Denied there was a problem R5/6 until they couldn't because of all the multiple videos + Unfairly slagged off the Sony on the basis of one video + Accused a well respected camera reviewer (Gerald Undone) of being a shill with zero evidence Then want you banned for having a different opinion. This is all classic camera fanboyism and it sucks. It clogs up forums like dpreview like no other and I'd suggest it has no place here as this place strikes me as much more impartial. It's the fanboyism that needs to stop. -

I believe the fundamental issue in the Canon's overheating is a combination of using H265 and Canon's reliance on their old in house nm silicon production. Without custom chips H265 is a real CPU hurter. Encoding 8K or high FR 4K in H265 really stresses the camera CPU, this combined with old, less power efficient nm fabrication is whats causing the overheating. Which means a firmware update ain't going to fix what are much more fundamental issues. Although the canboys think Canon can just push out a firmware update and all will be well. Delusional! -

You don't like your blatant canboyism pointed out - we get it! You never did let us know how the drilling of the R5 went. Have you ordered your gloves yet? -

The rabid canboys on here need to put down that reefer and get with the real world. The R5/6 have serious over heating issues as *multiple* sources have confirmed. Soo much soo Canon has heavily limited the stock they've sent out so any recall won't be as bad. But if you listen to the canboy's it's as if none of this has happened, soo drunk on the Canon kool aid. This rampant fanboyism is dangerous because it gives prospective purchasers incredibly bad 'info' that could lead to them making a multi thousand dollar mistake. The Sony doesn't overheat as badly as the Canon's and that drives the canboys nuts as it shows what a dud they've slavishly backed. The idea the Sony overheats has been ignored by the media is again, completely ludicrous. Canboys exist in a parallel universe. "Oh, we found one person on the internet that doesn't like the Sony!" Desperate, pathetic stuff. I'd suggest the canboys would be better off in the dpreview Canon forum where their views fit right in with that particular echo chamber. -
Somewhere in an Indiana Jones end scene type warehouse are thousands and thousands of R5 / R6 cameras that will never ever see the light of day.

This is the thing, the stores won't want to touch them because they are the first people unhappy customers will turn to to give a hard time. Unhappy dealer network as a result. This is a fail for Canon on many levels. -

Check out Northrup's initial review - he compares the various levels. Multiple reviews have said it's poor, definitely not 'good enough'. -

The problem is this 4K LQ mode (hilariously called 'safety mode' by canboys) looks shit. Line skipped crap from 2015. -

Further rumours camera stores have only been getting 20-30% of their orders fulfilled. Canon minimising the number they may have to recall. If I were Canon I'd be beefing up the their legal team. Great job Canon! -

Also from Canon Rumours: An anonymous communication yesterday let me know that “Canon is working on multiple solutions and will have a full statement and plan in the coming weeks.” Shame Canon didn't work on those multiple solutions before they decided to charge customers thousands for a product they knew was flawed. Sucks to have one from the first batch. -

You didn't answer on the drilling - did it work or did you brick it? Shame to invalidate the weather sealing, but if gets you a few more mins recording this could be the life saver! -

The Canboys bought the hype hardest, no doubt. When the scale of the issue was revealed which even they couldn't ignore they jumped on the Sony on the basis of one video as you say. All very obvious and revealing. Classic diversionary tactics because their god had been dethroned soo quickly. Personally I wish the R6 didn't have the issues, pretty much perfect for me if it didn't. I prefer the 20M, AF and Canon usability experience over the Sony's - though it looks like they've improved this iteration. -

A Canboy on another forum (you can probably guess) was suggesting drilling holes in the R5 to help cooling. Drilling holes in your brand new 4+ grand camera... -

Somebody experienced with peltiers said you have to put 20 watts in to get 1 watt out, very inefficient. An R5 owner seen earlier. . -

In one 'review' where he didn't state what thermal management settings were set? Okay fanboy you wanted the Canon to deliver and it missed badly - I get it. You mean the R5 4K LQ 'safety' mode that produces shitty footage? 4+ grand well spent. The R5 overheats worse than the Sony. This is not difficult stuff, only a fanboy pretends otherwise. -

Who said that? You plus a random off the internet? Hardly conclusive evidence. The vast majority of the reviews thus far have said the Sony has better thermal management than Canon's. Desperate stuff to pretend otherwise. Careful getting that beard trapped in the fan on a 4 grand 'top of the line' camera to get you another 2 minutes recording time. -

A fair summary. The Canon fanboys are having to work super hard to defend the indefensible. Canon missed the mark and they can't bare it. Trying to justify the addition of a third party cooling device (that probably won't work) so they can shoot video for more than 15 minutes. Ridiculous. Meanwhile the Sony has largely been well received. Fanboys gonna fanboy - was ever thus. -
Yeah, he has. He surveyed 1500+ people. Where's your survey to refute it? The fact you're disputing people are fanboys about camera brands is funny. First day on the internet?

I take into account people's opinion's on equipment who I rate based on their previous body of work, which in his case is extensive, detailed and impartial versus somebody that accuses somebody of being a shill with zero evidence to support it with nothing other than their own unsubstantiated opinion. You're basically trashing the guys hard earned, long established reputation based on your own opinion.

Are you serious? Have you followed this guy for any amount of time?! Whats the more realistic scenario here: A) He's secretly sponsored by Sony for 100K (and if he was he wouldn't be buying 3 of them off the internet at retail like anybody else). B) He genuinely likes the camera (for the very detailed reasons he's given - as detailed as he is in all his videos). I'm going with B.
