The issue with a lot of small cameras like the Sigma fp is the lack of a robust HDMI/SDI. Most serious stuff I do I'd need a monitor and I just can't trust the damn thing. I also find it easier to get a camera that is already 5-6 pounds for anything handheld. Rigging stuff is just a pain especially when you need to add 5-6 pounds to a half pound camera. IBIS is King though for run and gun stuff, it really just makes the job so much easier. Having a bit of heft also helps with IBIS. People say the S5 stabilization is not as good but in reality its because its lighter. The S1 gets more stable shots. When you get down to something the size of the sigma fp its a bit problematic for handheld which is what run and gun travel stuff often is.

The cost to rig up a Komodo could be done pretty affordably. I would say under $500. That doesn't include the cost of batteries of course. V mounts can be had for pretty cheap and it helps that the Komodo power draw is fairly low. An NPF adapter could also be used. Not having to use a RED monitor or RED media really brings down the cost. Even though CFAST isn't super affordable SSD to CFAST adapters could be used. Its still a 6K camera out the gate which is more than twice as much as a Pocket 6k pro, which only needs batteries as a secondary cost.

@Sage Should the luts work just as well for Prores Raw on the S5 and A7S3?
-
Would be nice to have another sensor competitor besides Canon. I think that could really up the competitive market game.

A7SIII - with great toneh comes great responsibility

Have you messed with settings to see if that helps? -
They've corrected all of the stability issues that could be problematic from what I have seen. I owned a Z-cam S6 briefly. My only issue with it was the Latency was sometimes noticeable with an external monitor. The lack of an easy to edit internal RAW codec was the other bummer. They are essentially taking the Sony sensors and squeezing all the features they can out of them. If they can come up with a better "RAW" codec I think they'll truly be formidable.

Definitely true. I am really enjoying my XLR device for my Panasonic. Really just want to use it for everything lol. The FX3/A7S3 has that available now too but the Panasonic image seems better than those cameras. The S1 has just been ideal for run and gun even though I prefer a raw image to work with. I am really curious what the Prores RAW from the atomos is like.

If there aren't lenses available for Emount that don't focus breath it could be problematic though. But yeah you are right. I have never had an issue with manual focus for say interviews. If you are really crazy with your DOF wants on the close up shot though it can be problematic. I usually stop down quite a bit for close ups. Even at f5.6 you get a nice background blur on most close ups. -
Kind of an impulse decision. It was an even trade for my Zcam S6 rig, which I had for sale. I do think the RED image is really nice. Small things like the focus peaking and monitor latency are also top notch on the RED.

I ended up getting a RED scarlet mx, unexpected to say the least lol

The Second video Griffin Conway mentions the AF on dark skin issue. I've seen it in a couple other videos too but I'd have to dig around more. The issues with the A7S3 are concerning though lens corrections could be turned off to avoid the one and I don't think I'd blame focus breathing on the AF system. Pulsing is problematic though maybe not as much as losing focus altogether, still problematic. Its a bummer the 1DKMK3 doesn't have EYE AF, there is always some gimp. The R5 seems to have it all.
-
The second two videos mention the focusing on darker skinned people issue. Looks like you already saw the Brandon Washington video though. I guess with auto focus I just want something reliable. Sony seems to have gotten there as well as certain Canon cameras. Its too bad the C70 doesn't have the same AF abilities as the 1DXMK3.
-
I am sorry if that was insenstive. I am not joking about it not focusing well on darker skinned people though. It's pretty well documented in reviews. Could just be underexposure I guess but the 1DXMK3 and R5 don't have that issue. I can pull up the reviews if you like.
-
Yes I've used them on every non full frame camera I have owned. I thought you were trying to say two cameras one being a S35 speedboosted and the other full frame with the same lens and F stop would not have the same amount of bokeh.
-
Yes exactly. Many have pointed out its not as good as the R5 or the 1DX MK3. The biggest issue is it doesn't focus well on darker skinned people. Racist focusing system lol. But yeah it seems to be behind for some reason.

I only have experience with the Fuji 23mm f2, 50mm f2, and the 18-55 2.8. The 18-55 is pretty reliable but the other two would randomly lose focus in simple interview type situations. There was also focus pulsing which isn't that noticeable but once you see it you can't unsee it. Didn't really discover these things until using it quite a bit though.

I’m talking about with a speedbooster. A S35 camera with a speed booster and a 35mm lens will look the same as a full frame camera with a 35mm lens. There is often a slight difference as most speedboosters reduce the crop slightly less than 1:1.
-
What? Speedboosters effect DOF as well. A full frame camera and a S35 camera speedboosted with the same lens will look the same. Yeah this is only true with 6k sensors. Yeah the Sony really takes the lead for me. If Canon hadn't of gimped the C70's auto focus is might be a different story. RAW recording on the Sony is also a big advantage. Combine those two things with E-ND and its no contest for me. The C70 also takes a hit in dynamic range at 4k 120p, not a big deal but just another thing.
-
I mean its a $500 difference as the XT4 can be had new for $1500.
-
If you want good auto focus I'd get Canon or Sony. I've tried Fuji and it's just not reliable enough, I end up going back to manual focus and at that point why I am I paying for auto focus glass. It's an expensive feature.
-
Panasonic is behind Fuji but for me Fuji wasn't good enough to be relied on so going back to Panasonic wasn't an issue as I was opting to manual focus with the Fuji. It might not be a coincidence that the only two companies with excellent AF also make their own sensors.
-
It's definitely daunting but the world is smaller than we think. While there is more content than ever there are more niches than ever. Old content is also replaced by new. It's probably more about marketing than the content itself.

Yeah Nikon is really lackluster for not having a cine line to protect. Whats the deal with that? Do they just not think its worth it to put any money into mirrorless these days?
