Does an APS-C Crop on a FF Sensor Increase Background Compression?
TomTheDP replied to herein2020's topic in Cameras
Yeah I'd not consider DOF compression. -
The Z-cam is still like $1500 cheaper plus you'd be getting a much nicer monitor. But no auto focus on the Z-cam.

Interesting so the bit depth on the URSA really wouldn't be over 12. Definitely true for coloring in post. Dynamic range is pretty easy to break though thats becoming less of an issue with the latest batch of full frame cameras. Lighting is not always as much skill as it is time and money.

Explain what you mean by 3D. I’ve heard people say one lens of the same focal length is more 3D than another of the same focal length. Not really sure what 3D means tho ... -

What do you mean by compression. DOF changes when you open or close the aperture. -
Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill
TomTheDP replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Is there a noticeable dynamic range difference between the two? -
Its also as expensive as an S5 with larger files.

I've seen many many times people talk about how the older Blackmagic cameras have a certain quality that the Pocket 4k and 6k seemed to have left behind. The OG Pocket, the BMCC 2.5K, or the URSA mini. The Fairchild sensors used in all the Blackmagic cameras other than the Pocket 4k and 6k were all dual gain. They process the image like the Arri Alexa. Taking two 11bit images and combining it into one 16 bit image that is then processed in camera into 12 bit LOG RAW. The Alexa is a bit different as its taking two 14 bit signals rather than 11. Its similar to an HDR image where its taking a higher and lower amplified image and combining for more dynamic range. One of the reasons why the Alexa has probably the best highlight and shadow range on the market. Anyways this info is all on Arri's website but where I am confused is if this pipeline also creates higher color depth. Two 14 bit images means 28 bits, which is then processed down to 16 bit(not sure how that works?) and then into 12 bit LOG. Does that mean the final 12 bit log RAW is similar to a 16 bit linear RAW? Does that mean the URSA mini in regards to color depth is no different than a RED camera doing 16 bit linear. Or the OG pocket for that matter.

Does an APS-C Crop on a FF Sensor Increase Background Compression?

85mm on FF and 50mm on APSC will have the same field of view but DOF will not be the same unless you shoot faster on the 50mm. -
Yeah I've honestly considered that with my Z-cams as they are just too damn light lol. But yeah light is important for weddings.

DOF won’t necessarily be the same and different lenses vary slightly in terms of distortion. -

Yes -
^^^^^ Sounds like potentially the best plan. I am potentially thinking about getting a GH4 or G7 as a B-cam now. I wonder if Sage's Alexa lut would work decently well with the older Cine-D

Convenience has been my number one these days. I've only shot with the FX9 once but it was a dream. Its like being able to change shutter speed without effecting motion.

Yeah its the same effect as if you cropped in post. -
I think there is a big difference between handheld DSLR and handheld cinema camera though. After doing handheld with my URSA mini I realized there is a huge difference. I could shoot on a 50mm and get nice looking handheld shots where as on my fuji it would be a jittery mess.

Do you have a specific example you could show us?

A third party needs to do an END EF adapter or something
-
If shooting in Vlog on the S1, the colors on the G85 aren't really going to be doing you any favor in terms of matching. Of course you could shoot both in CineD. Fast lenses are a good option to workout low light limits on M43 but good fast glass is expensive. Cheaper lenses that are super fast are generally not the most usable wide open. But I guess again the question is do you actually need low light performance for interviews?

The audio on the top handle isn't a big deal for me. You still have scratch audio and I never use an on camera mic with a gimbal. Usually would have an audio guy with a separate recorder, which is usually the case for anything.
-
I think its defiantly a good option, just a bit boring. The A7S3 has features that exceed this more expensive offering, which probably shouldn't be the case considering this is the higher end more expensive option. I do agree there is nothing to complain about these days.

The GH5 is your cheapest and best bet. Of course it can't keep up with the S1 beyond 3200 iso and the dynamic range is more limited. However dynamic range isn't as important for say a close up B cam shot and I am guessing you usually light your interviews. The Fuji is a great deal and the image is a step up from the GH5 but the record limits suck for interviews. If you can get a used GH5 for under 1k I think its a good option. The 25mm 1.7 might be a good option. The rokinon/samyang 12mm f2 is a good wide angle option if can deal with a manual lens. The Viltrox is a fine option. Wide open the viltrox is soft that is the one downside. Lens Turbo speedboosters are the best in terms of low budget ones, but they are fully manual. Vlog L and Vlog do not match but its certainly closer than SLOG vs VLOG or Vlog vs FLOG or any other log.

hopefully that can be fixed in a firmware update. The lack of touch screen can't though.

I use one of these for my Zcam

You won’t know the value of an END until you’ve used one.
