I respect your opinion but I totally disagree. Have you seen films shot with Panasonic Varicam or Sony Venice (doesn’t look soulless to me) or are we talking about mirrorless cameras Whats soulless to you ? can you show some examples because alot of things are subjective like Colour science, Design, cinematography etc. Sony and Panasonic are hardcore focused on specs and so is canon, Fuji and Leica.. so ?. Also what philosophies does Fuji, Canon and Leica have that Sony and Panasonic does not. Is it because of Sony sensors in which Fuji and Leica uses. Don’t want to sound harsh, just trying to understand. I don’t see anything special about Canon, Fuji and Leica. It’s all so subjective anyways.

No! You’re not being harsh, I’m really speaking to m43 users that need it. That’s fine if you don’t but there are some that do, like solo bloggers, YouTubers and fast action photography. I understand some want high specs like 4k120/6k60 but there’s a sub set of m43 users that just need the autofocus not the high specs. It’s the reason some didn’t upgrade to the GH6, some moved to sony/canon and some moved to the S series. Gh6 sales weren’t as good as the GH5, let’s be honest here but it could be better. If they make one m43 camera with pdaf, then that will shut YouTubers up.

As much as I like the LX100, I think putting PDAF should be the strategy going forward for M43. Nothing wrong with the GH6 sensor but from the lack of GH6 sales + $800+ price drop and YouTube DFD backlash puts Panasonic M43 users in rough spot imo. I think they need at least one system with PDAF that cost $1000-$1400 to get them back in the game.

Took a mirrorless camera for a two month trip and used my phone 98% of the time. Not worth it imo, lugging a big camera with a lens is a drag and you worry about theft also. If I was getting paid for a job then I would bring it but vacations shouldn’t be about the best IQ, it should just be about capturing memories. #1 phone.

Competition is good isn’t it. Why not share the pie, it would be boring if it’s just Sony and Canon. I’m thankful that there are Sigmas, Panasonic, black magic, Fuji, Leica, DJI etc. because they offer different things for different users. It’s not like these brands are gonna die anytime soon, there are fan bases for them. There all just tools anyways and filmmakers/videographers/photographers are just trying to find the right tool that works for them, there’s nothing wrong about someone being interested in choosing L-mount/Z/fx mount/?, just because they don’t have a high-end cinema line.

Cool! I’m speaking to those that don’t need AF as a tool for their projects 100% of the time. I understand that AF is beneficial for some shooting scenarios but not for every project or every member here. The R8 just got non or ex canon users like me curious but like I said before if I was doing 100% video work, I would rather pony up and buy an S5ii or wait for a used one. The R8 doesn’t work for me or you but it can definitely work for others here, just gotta deal with its workarounds.

I think for the Canon users who are in need of this camera, they should definitely buy it as it suits them. What works great for you doesn’t work for everybody here. Same for the non-Canon filmmakers out there that need a cam or an extra cam, there are tools out there right now for cheaper prices. For less then $1500 you can get a “used” XT3-4/OG S5/S1/Gh5s/bmpcc4k/6k/sigma Fp/Fx30. So many good options out there right now, buy one that suit your needs.

It’s definitely a good option for existing rf lens owners that want a b-cam but for 100% video users, I would pony the $500 extra dollars for the S5ii.

The same thing happens with Sony and canon autofocus. You have to adjust, tap or go manually. Plan accordingly when doing events, wedding’s, etc.. There are times you should use it and times you shouldn’t, it’s just a tool like anything else.

Richard wong”s S5ii vs GH6 ibis video looks as though there were strengths and weaknesses to both. GH6 had better pitch, it did better on bumps. Whereas S5ii had better yaw then the GH6, so a bit smoother. S5ii ibis seems to be the one to beat for now when it comes to full frame. I think the next M43 from Pana/OM could be Go pro level though
