  1. Ok so there was a previous forum thread regarding a rehousing project for the LA7200. Based off the video there, I have had this design in my mind for my own rehousing project and improvements as well for close focus and/or marrying the LA7200 with a manual focus lens and making an all in one lens solution for the Canon 5d Mark III.   Progress is starting off well. Getting the hang of AutoCAD and designing as such.   I am planning on first prototyping with a 3d printer I have access to then going to a further manufacturing step from there. Not trying to get too ahead of myself however you can keep track of the progress and id appreciate comments or suggestions regardless as I try to work this out.   Steps:   Design model in AutoCad --- 15% Port model into Google Sketchup 3D print prototype Test Prototype Test again.... Make changes... Probably test again.... Use AutoCad model for CNC machining Produce final model.   Planned features...   Close Focus and far focus at a twist of the ring. Easy to handle enclosure Focus ring easy lens adjustment Standard housing to fit Cokin P or other diopters much easier   Possible features   15mm rail mount auto adjusting focus solution Housing combined with Aperture adjustor on a Canon FD manual Lens Direct connection to the 5d Mark III basically making it a hack lens using a custom EF mount or 72mm thread AF confirm chip? (not a bad idea) All the lens flares! (ALL THE LENS FLARES!) Er multicoating removal. Something like that.   Close to exact Measurements via caliper - (short of cutting the existing enclosure in half. I could not get the measurements exactly for how close the back and front lens elements are in terms of distance)   Front Element - Concave Width: 84.90mm Height: 72.96mm Depth: 16.25mm   Rear Element - Convex Width: 52.96mm Height: 40.99mm Depth: 4.13mm   Front Element Holder depth - 17.82mm Outer Hood Depth - 13.14mm   Approx 23.8mm distance between the two lenses. (not entirely sure on this. Like I said, cant figure it out unless i cut the thing in half and really I want to be able to use it until the enclosure is finished at least)   All in all, working pretty well so far. Got the elements into AutoCad, and its time to start designing the enclosure for it.
  2. Trying to understand / fix the LA7200 to make it clearer, less CA, sharper and more usable. Building a lens from other lenses to attempt to do this. In any case, im trying to understand what is causing the issues in general using the LA7200 on DSLR or Blackmagic cinema camera. Is it because of the sensor cropping then? The LA7200 was designed for a 4:3 sensor crop therefore it will not work correctly on the BMCC, or larger sensors? Or is it simply a design flaw overall of the LA7200 , poor lens design / poor coating If it is a crop sensor issue, what is happening on the LA7200 to cause issues because the sensors are larger crop. Is the back lens element simply too small, where the image is being projected against the taking lens too small therefore when desqueezed you see parts of the image you really should not? i.e. the taking lens and the sensor is capturing too much of the la7200? By adding a diopter behind it does that then, make it larger i.e. projects less of what is seen from the front of the la7200 to the sensor? Or is it more complex than this. I have tried using a diopter behind the LA7200 i think its a Tokina 0.5 Not sure. I mean it says No 0.05 so I dont know at this point. In any case it does not seem to help. Just trying to understand, thanks anyone that can help.
  3. I have a question regarding the LA7200, basically in order to focus you would to move the back lens element or front. Would that be correct? Would it be possible to allow focus by adding another lens element behind the flat back lens element. Not sure how the image is presented by the square back of the LA7200. Im currently in the process of modifying it and frankensteining the lens with old junked vintage lenses to make it one whole lens that does not need a taking lens. Just want to make sure I have the physics right. Thanks in advance.
  4. hello everyone, i just bought myself the Panasonic LA7200. and i'm shooting on a GH2 with the speedbooster adapter. i'm considering of buying these canon FD lens but afraid it might not work; Canon FD 17mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8 can anyone with experience of these combination share some advise? thanks.
  5. hi guys, i started a vimeo channel dedicated to my anamorphic test with LA7200 and GH2, speedbooster and CANON FD lens. https://vimeo.com/channels/anamorphictest Do feel free to take a look and comment. Thanks, Chin
  6. Hey guys, First time poster here....So I am diving into all of these diopter possibilities for a thesis film I have to shoot. I recently purchased the BMPC 4K camera, the tokina 11-16mms and the panasonic LA7200 (Mostly based on advice and research from this site given my modest budget) But I can't seem to find any recent info for diopters. I know of the rare LOMO as per the guide but can't find it. I know of the Cinetatctics hood, but the diopter solution is evading me. Even watching eyepatch's guide doesn't seem to give recent info. I'm still pretty green when it comes to diopters so any help would be much appreciated- thanks guys!
  7. Hi guys... I'm finishing a feature soon that has been shot mostly anamorphic on the LA7200. Lot of documentary and exterior type scenes but now I'm getting into fiction and dialogue and need to really kit the adapter out. I was positive when Letus announced their adapter that it would be the route I would go but I just can't find enough footage to convince me about it...something seems off, Letus won't answer my questions, whole thing is weird. As such I'd like to get the LA7200 at the peak of where it can be. As messed up as it is, it seems to have something special. Remains to be seen if it will hold up in front of a GH4 but I have to try. I cannot find anything on ebay. I can pay via credit card or paypal and shipping is to Florida. I'd be looking for a Kenko +.3 105mm or similar, any of the larger .25 or even .5 options, and/or whatever else you guys suggest but I tend to go wide so smaller stuff won't work.
  8. Got my SLR Magic Anamorphot set yesterday and ran out the door to get some video. I really like the new SLR Magic Anamorphot. Great solid metal build and heft. Easy to adapt, with threads on the front for diopters. I shot this comparison with the Panasonic LA7200. I wish I had a proper wide like the Panasonic 20mm, but I'll get one soon enough. The widest for the SLR Magic Anamorphot is 20mm MFT, but the Panasonic is 14mm. That is the only real advantage of the LA7200, the wide shots. Otherwise the SLR Magic is just worlds better in terms of usability, size, and the ability to use diopters and ND filters.
  9. It's Chinese New Years! Got my SLR Magic Anamorphot just in time to get all the celebrations: Food, festivals, and Lion Dances! I walked around getting footage with my Canon 5D mkIII using Magic Lantern's RAW Hack. The SLR Magic Anamorphot is very sharp and it is easy to use. There is slight vignette on the footage because my Vari-ND fader is 72mm, the front of the SLR Magic Anamorphot is 77mm. I'll have to get a new one at 77mm to solve this. Most shots were at F2.8 on a cloudy day, F4 for the Jupiter 9. Details: SLR Magic Anamorphot Canon 5D mkIII w Magic Lantern RAW Hack Canon EF 50mm 1.8 (majority of shots) Helios 58mm (near end) Jupiter 9 85mm (near end) Lightcraft Vari-ND Fader
  10. Hey Guys, Just wanted to share a little anamorphic western I did a couple years ago. Finally finished put it online. Camera used was an unhacked GH1 (yea, I shot it a while ago) LA7200, used mostly a 24mm nikon Graded in davinchi Ran it through Dark Energy and cleaned it up most of the GH1 compression noise. It was a while ago, but I watch it on the big screen at a festival and I think it looked great.
  11. Ive been experimenting for a while with the Panasonic LA7200. I just cant seem to cut down on the edge blurring with it. I shot this with a Canon 5d Mark III with 85mm L1.2 and the edge blurring is still very evident. I had hoped the telephoto of the 85mm would help but it did not seem to. http://adobe.ly/1fKUVlU ISO320 85mm F8 1/400 sec However I've seen videos of people using the La7200 with Canon EOS 5d Mark II full frame with none of the edge blurring. Really been trying to figure this out, does anyone have any suggestions? '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> Maybe its just not noticeable here.
  12. Besides being a regular member, I've already sold more than a few lenses in this forum and in DVXUser. Since I'm from Brazil, eBay isn't a good option for me, and people really don't dig into anamorphics here. Once again, I have more lenses than I can use, and decided to let them go. Check out the description, price and pictures below. I only accept PayPal. Taxes and shipping are my responsibility. :) If interested, send me a PM, or an email! ferradans@gmail.com   1 - Panasonic LA7200 + Custom Front with 105mm thread + Redstan Clamp. (1.33x stretch, focus through) I've modded this one hard, to fit every need. Now I'm moving towards LOMOs and would be sad to let this baby in the locker, gathering dust. I've machined a custom front for it, creating 105mm filter threads for attaching big diopters - which are somewhat hard to come across.   The glass is in perfect condition, no haze, fungus, scratches or chips this time. Rear thread is secured with Redstan's clamp, with 67mm threads, closest pairing possible with the taking lens. I'm including front and rear caps - not the original ones - and the original lens pouch.   As everyone already knows, it's focus through, allows you to rack focus on the taking lens and go extra wide-angle at the same time. Has some problems regarding corner sharpness, but I think it's awesome.   I'm including in this kit a custom-made filter holder for 4.5" diopters, and three of these: +0.5, +1 and +2, Tiffen, in perfect shape. This way, you won't need anything else in order to start shooting with this lens, even at the widest lenses and apertures. This size of glass is very hard to find, and this adapter doesn't even have a copy. Single unit! 14. https://vimeo.com/77332920   This video is really three parts - lens test (taking and anamorphic), people in shots and atmosphere on location.  BTW the set is for the TV show "Person of Interest".   Sorry no music on this one.
  15. I'm parting with my beloved LA7200 and all that goes with it: adapter rings, diopters set (+0.5, +1, +2), Cinetactics mattebox, the whole shebang.   Everything is in perfect working order, as new.   I bought it after reading Andrew's ultimate guide on anamorphic and must say I've been really pleased with it AFTER I managed to get my hands on the +0.5 diopter that is. It now focuses from infinity to about 20cm with a 14mm pancake.   Have been using it with my GH2 & following lens combo: 14mm Panasonic pancake, 24mm & 35mm Nikkor.   All pics are available on http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171124778730   Get in touch if any question...   & while you're at it, check out the trailer I shot last month for a feature thriller film noir THRILLER FILM NOIR I'm prepping: https://vimeo.com/72806937   Cheerio, J.
  16. Model Kyllie music video shot with Canon 5DmkIII RAW and Panasonic GH3. This is my first foray into shooting a music video with slow motion in mind. I also wanted to shoot with Anamorphic lenses and use a Steadicam for movement.  Learned a lot from this shoot, I hope to make the next one much better.   https://vimeo.com/72950991
  17. Testing out my recently acquired lenses with my Canon 5DmkIII using RAW.  The ability to record 3:2 as 1920x1280 is really great, but there is still a very limited ability to shoot wide with 2x Anamorphic lenses, in this case my Sankor 16D.  I have a Panasonic LA7200, but it's only a 1.33x stretch and doesn't get me the nice oval bokehs and stretched OOF areas that I want.  I really wish there was some kind of wide option using a 2x Anamorphic lens.  I also tested 1920x1280 versus 1920x1080 to see the difference.   https://vimeo.com/72941440   https://vimeo.com/72941441
  18. Hi everyone! I've recently started to work on this project that might interest other users in this forum. I'll need some help in the process. One of my main interests in this development is to keep the whole process "open-source" so anyone can reproduce the rehousing based on what we share in this topic, staying as far as possible from a monopoly with ultra-high prices! :D We must agree that the Panasonic LA7200 is an interesting lens, right? But, as all others, it has its quirks and downsides, mostly related to its body design. Plastic is just cheap and fragile. It's very easy to lose parts of it (tiny screws, mostly), not mentioning the deep thread that requires more step rings and the square-front which makes diopter use way more complex than should be. Also, its weakness for close focus or shallow apertures is very well known. What if all this could be solved in a big move? What I'm planning is a full rehousing of this lens, improving every aspect mentioned in the previous lines. - Round, full-metal body - Internal alignment mechanism based on three screws instead of one (like a clamp) - 67mm, exposed rear thread - 114mm front thread, with various step-downs that won't increase the distance from the front element (non-standard design) - Very easy to remove glass for cleaning - "Focus adjustable", based on a push-pull concept, for closer focus, or longer rack focusing. Sounds good? What else do you guys think could/must be improved? I already have multiple sketches around these ideas but haven't started precise modelling yet, nor have contact with any CNC owners that might be interested in the project. If anyone wants to partner, please, speak up! My direct email is ferradans at gmail.com ps - the focus part is mostly based on this video, but with a body around it! hahaha https://vimeo.com/23042151
  19. I know its like beating a dead horse. Long shot, but looking to see if i can find a proper +0.4 diopter for the Panasonic LA7200. Not finding much of anything so figured id post see if anyone either has one to sell or knows some good spots to look. Thanks!
  20. I am selling a mint AG-LA7200, 1.33 anamorphic. Can send photo's on request. Almost never been used. Just bought it myself but also was lucky to run into a nice iscorama 54 last week. (no, not from this forum) I am not looking for making any money on the lens Euro 1050,- (i even can show you the invoice) is what i payed (call me stupid  :P ) for it so if you think its worth it i can re-sell for that same price. Think this Panny will get dusty sitting on my desk and that would be a real shame
  21. HI   That it is possible, screw on a foton zoom lens 37 -140 a AG-LA7200, so as to use the anamorphic lens?
  22. I did mention this in another thread, but I think that it probably deserves its own topic. For those of you trying to mount diopters on LA7200 anamorphic lenses, this is what I have been doing (see pictures). The binding product is called Dual Lock. It is similar to velcro but is adhesive-sided and creates a stronger bond. I never have to worry about my diopters slipping off. It works well with inexpensive Cokin-P diopters as pictured. With a GH2, I can shoot with the Voigtlander Nokton and the LA7200 with only slight vignetting. So 30mm and up should be vignette free. It's a very simple concept but I haven't seen anyone else using it and it took me a while to figure it out. I hope that others find it useful.
  23. Shot out in the Hoh Rainforest. Heavily used the Kenko .3 105mm diopter. Edited in Adobe Premiere. https://vimeo.com/52401060
  24. Finally put my GH3 through it's paces and I got my anamorphics too.  I shot the local teen group EMKE Hawaii live at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu's 25th Anniversary celebration.  But to shoot all anamorphic, well you can call me crazy I guess.  Shooting dual focus is no joke, and I really had to change my thinking in terms of zooming and framing.  The videos below are from the middle of the set when I finally got a hang of it.  Well sort of, some shots are still soft.  I can say that I'm happy with the performance of the Sankor and Eiki 16D (pretty much the same lens).  Both are sharp if focused correctly.  The LA7200 I could never get good results past 50mm, so I just use it wide angle, in this case 17mm.  Overall the GH3 works very well, and I think I have a good combination here.   Wide Angle Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens @ 17mm, Panasonic LA7200 Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Canon FD 50mm F1.2L, Eiki 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium/Close-up Shot - Panasonic GH3, 24P 72mbit MOV, Panasonic 45-200mm lens, Sankor 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5-5.6 (zoomed), 1/80sec, Vivid (-3,-5,-4,-5)   http://youtu.be/N2RsGEoWtkM   Edit: Sorry forgot to add that the LA7200 is 1.33x, the Sankor/Eiki are 2x anamorphics.  So I cropped the Sankor/Eiki to fit into a 2.35:1 space.  Sorry no super-wide look, I needed it to match the LA7200.
  25. Just purchased a Panasonic LA7200 and tested it out on the Canon 40mm pancake lens with the 5d Mark III. Results were decent, but looking for something a little more sharp. Any lens suggestions for this set up?
