Holy Smoke Does no one shoot video with a 1Dx? Am I the only guy who shoots video with a 1Dx? Am I the only guys using Nikon manual focus AiS lenses? Holy crap. Somebody out there please tell me what's up with my match needle metering in LiveView using manual lenses with the 1Dx. The histogram is fine but the needle meter reading is out to lunch. It's only an issue in LiveView. I don't have this problem with my 5D MII. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers A.T.

Hey guys, This was my last job with Nikon (D5300) before getting my beloved A7sII Filmed mostly with the 18-105 plus Nikon E 50 and Samyang 8 for some shots Premiere and Afx for the post work Enjoy!

so the other week i decided to finally shoot something with the a7s (after getting it I'd been too busy to use it) and shogun. this is the result (30 seconds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJutz_AWErs and my write-up about where i think i went wrong, and what i plan on doing in the future: http://caseywilsondp.com/2015/02/10/sony-a7s-and-atomos-shogun/ (if you don't want to read it, my biggest problem was that I under-exposed too much with slog2 and had to heavily de-noise the night shots)

I'm starting to set myself up a small videography business: just a one-man-band doing local stuff - community group promos, weddings, etc. I'm still working on the website (www.lintelfilms.co.uk) and have just finished the 2nd draft of my promotional film. I'd really appreciate your feedback on the film. I don't mind at all if you are brutal!

I'm selling my D5300 as I've just bought a GH4 and can't justify 3 cameras. I love the D5300 but the GH4 image, especially with a speed booster, is capable of being very similar in colour and low light terms (and of course superior in many ways). I do in a lot of ways prefer the D5300 image - particularly the colour science - but I know that in reality, next to my GH4 and BMPCC, it won't get much use. Anyway, if anyone is interested it's on ebay starting at £299, auction closing this evening. There are no bids at the moment so if anyone here is sure they want it, message me and you can have it for £270 not incl. P&P (£11 to UK for next day delivery, I'll calculate worldwide costs if needed). Ebay listing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161521116555?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 It's in excellent condition - mechanically perfect and cosmetically I can't see anything to complain about at all. Shutter count is 2499. 1 year old. Still under guarantee for another year. 3 batteries. I shot these on it soon after I first got it. It's a great video camera. I'm going to miss it. *sniff*

Im a novice filmmaker and I've been following websites like EOSHD, reading blogs like Philip Blooms and generally for the last 6-8 months researching camera gear while I have been saving up enough to buy my own gear and not just borrow friends. I am looking to spend about $1500 at first. I love video and intend to shoot more, but I also shoot a lot of stills as well and that is obviously where my problems start. I would be very happy to buy a G6 or a used GH3 for video as I know these will outclass almost anything at that price range for video. Add a bunch of old nikkor primes and id be set. But I know stills and the DOF id get with the mft mount is nothing like that of a APS-C or FF nikon or canon. THE SONY A7s is amazing and if i could afford one I'd get it in a heartbeat, it retails at 3300 NZD here in NZ so its ridiculously out of my price range. Im looking to go second hand as it'll mean i can buy more lenses and such. Ive been looking at used 7D and D7100 bodies as both sit between 700-800 used meaning i could easily pick up a 50mm 1.8 prime, a 17-50 sigma or tamron 2.8 and maybe a telephoto lens for stills. Any suggestions or help I don't know what else to read or look at but I know what I buy now will influence my decisions and I'm not sure what to invest in. Also side note; if I purchase a 7D i will be shooting near exclusively with ML.

Promo reel made using various cameras that all cost under $700 (shots tagged)
Guest posted a topic in Cameras
This is a promotional reel I've just made for the small videography business I'm currently setting up (one-man-band doing local community organisations, weddings etc). Everything in it was shot on low-end/cheap cameras, several of which have been discussed and compared extensively on this forum over the last year or two. To boot, other than the Tokina 11-16mm all of the lenses were each bought for under $300. After a couple of enquiries about the gear I used for this reel, I've decided to add subtitles to show each camera (and lens) each shot was taken with. Just click the 'CC' button in the Vimeo play bar to turn the subtitles on. I'd welcome feedback on my reel, but this is mainly posted here in the hope it might be of use to others: Sorry the subtitles aren't synched perfectly to each edit (it's not easy with Amara). You'll work it out though I hope ... -
Sorry if this has been asked, but I cannot find it with search. I have a speedbooster for Nikon glass on mFT that I use on my GH3. I'm considering a used BMPCC camera and just wanted to check that the speedbooster is OK for this. I have read there is a special BMPCC version, but not sure what is the difference. If I cannot use the speed booster the BMPCC is not so interesting. Got to love the IQ of the camera though! Thanks in advance.

Found on Nikonrumors: Similar to the answer Nikon executives gave to AP in an interview last week, Toshiaki Akagi (Department Manager in Nikon's 1Designing Department) told dpreview that a new large sensor mirrorless cameras is a possibility in the future: "We know that there is a certain body of demand for larger sensors in mirrorless products. Although we already have the 1 inch sensor in the 1 System, we don't want to deny the possibility of future large-sensor mirrorless cameras. So maybe if there is enough demand we may be able to provide another type of mirrorless camera with larger sensors. This is one of the solutions." Few other points from the interview: - 4k video is coming to the Nikon DSLR lineup Source: http://nikonrumors.com/2014/09/23/nikon-large-sensor-mirrorless-camera-is-a-possibility.aspx/

Nikon will present another Fullframe camera. The rumor says it will be focused on "action". Nikon currently has 3 new FF bodies that cover all the stills photography needs (d610,d810,d4s) If you read forums like dpreview you know the limited mentality and the consecuent feelings that a lot of consumers have towards video . The response to this was the nikon Df without video features, so it would make perfect sense for Nikon to release a more video/speed focused camera. I personally hope it has an oled placed inside the viewfinder in case you want to shoot with electronic shutter, 4K video is a must to be taken seriously, maybe even 120fps 1080p. That would be some action camera. Although the current guessed specs say 24mp, the A7s sensor would be the obvious choice for this. These are the guessed specs: 24MP full frame sensor Tilting LCD screen Wi-Fi support Expeed 4 imaging processor Very light body (probably similar to the D610 and Df, maybe even lighter) Priced around $2,500 (the current Nikon FX camera price points are - D610: $1,896.95, Df: $2,746.95, D810: $3,296.95, D4s: $6,496.95) Potential announcement at the end of August or early September No idea on the model name - it could be D620, D750 or something completely differen http://nikonrumors.com/2014/08/11/the-upcoming-nikon-full-frame-dslr-camera-will-be-marketed-as-an-action-camera.aspx/ Maybe Andrew is already shooting it and that's the reason why he isn't showing up on the forums :P

Hiya Guys! I'm new to this forum and will try to be as clear as possible. :) I'm about to buy new gear for videography pretty soon and have already chosen to go for the GH4, that i will use with these lenses : Voigtlander Nokton MF 35mm f/1.4 (77mm with crop factor), Nikkor 35mm DX (56mm with speedbooster), Nikkor 50mm FX (80mm with sb) and a Nikkor 18-55mm DX (28,8-88mm with sb). I applied a 2,2 crop factor for Voigtlander lenses and 1,6 for the Nikon ones (DX and FX). Is this correct? I keep seeing different crop factors all over the internet. The main use will be documentary and travel videography, so I'm trying to get good and sharp gear easy to travel with as I'll be shooting alone or with only one person. I've read several threads on the eoshd forum, reviews... and still have a few questions concerning ND filters. It seems like I should get a variable ND filter with a 77 or 82mm diameter. The max budget for the filters (one VND or filter system) would be 300/400 US dollars tops. - would you recommend a VND filter rather than a filter-system + ND filters for my use? - my Nokton diameter is 43mm, do you know if a step up ring 43-82 mm or 43-77mm exists? I couldn't find one over the internet. - if you faced this problem, did you find a solution? - would I get vignetting on corners with wide lenses even with the crop factor? - Reviews seem to highlight the Heliopan and Tiffen VND, are there massive pros for one rather than the other? I'm sorry for this long post! One question always seems to lead to another one... Thank you very much to those who will read and answer me :) And a huge thank you to all other posts and people in the forum for the previous topics that helped me. Woooo!

Hi guys. So let's say in theory if Metabones brought out a EF lens mount specifically for the GH4 with electronics, which I'm about to buy), and we lived in this universe.... I'm going to make the move from TV documentary editing/shooting into directing short films, more commercials, more music videos/ and a step up to a documentary DV director. That sort of thing. I'm planning on getting the GH4, with a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 as my first lens, as it is by all accounts a very high quality lens and would fit me perfectly for most situations. So... do I buy the GH4 with a speed booster with a nikon mount, and a nikon mount Sigma? Or do I wait for a possible soon to be released metabones speedbooster for the GH4, EF mount with electronics etc and a canon mount Sigma? I'd like your (much more knowledgable about DSLR's) guys opinions?! If I got the GH4, with a speed booster, which glass is the wise to invest in? I don't have a lot of money to spend on lenses in the near future, so I'd rather cheap quality glass in general. Canon/Nikon mounts? Which one in general is cheaper for a high level of quality? Which is just the best in general for someone like me? Who wants to start shooting low budget short films and features? Also what's the actual benefit of a EF mount with proper electronics? Does it just mean that I could use the autofocus feature on the GH4 with the Canon lenses? Any other benefits? Would it mean that lenses with image stabilisation would work on the canon lenses while on the GH4, and an imaginary speed booster which would allow such a thing?

Personally moving on from camera discussions and now focussing on how to get the best grade from what I have. I know that it's preferable to start with a raw source, or at least flatly shot source if you don't have raw capability... but what I don't get completely, has to do with film emulating LUTs vs just doing all the adjustment/grading yourself from scratch. Have done several tutorials and can get a pretty decent final image with just using the color tools in FCPX. But, then I drop various LUTs on top of that and it often looks even better! Logically, it seems it'd be best to just get good at dialing in your look from scratch and not fooling with LUTs at all, but there are looks I've seen after applying various LUTs that I can't even fathom getting on my own. A lot of Brandon Li's footage lists the Osiris LUT for his MK3 raw footage, and some of his RX10 footage as well. Is it a waste of money buying something like the Osiris LUT package for use with a Nikon D5300 that isn't raw source? Or, am I better off just spending the time to get the color grade/style looking the way I want without using LUTs at all? Or, is it best to get the basic levels adjusted in FCPX for a generally good look, then stylizing with LUTs like Osiris after the fact? Or, applying the LUT style you want to start off with, and fine tuning the look via the color tools? Sorry for all the questions, but it feels redundant using both the builtin FCPX color tools AND the various LUTs. (PS. I know about Davinci Resolve, etc. but want to stick with getting it with just FCPX for now)

Hi I'm a completely new to the dslr video world but I'd like to get started. Checking out the reviews online and what fits what I'm willing to spend I think I narrowed it down to the Canon 70D or the Nikon D5300 I just plan on getting a body and then purchasing a sigma 18-35mm 1.8f lens and a good shotgun mic. I've been waffling back and forth as to which one to get. The 70D is a better all-around camera and a class above the D5300 in it's , touch screen UI, better build quality, weather resistant, quieter, autofocus that's actually somewhat usable, good low-light performance, better live view simulation and controls, better features for still photography. The D5300 however has some nice advantages as far as video goes, slightly better low light performance, virtually no moire, better dynamic range, headphone jack to monitor audio, and ability to output uncompressed HDMI, and from videos I've seen the image quality does look slightly better especially when filming people the D5300 shows the subjects skin texture & pores a lot clearer compared to 70D where it's a bit blurred How in the world do I choose? I would love to eventually get a Blackmagic 4k camera down the road if I can get good enough to make some money with this, not sure if that would have a bearing on what camera and lenses to get now. Thanks for any input.

Hi Guys I want to chime off and see if you have any suggestion. I am a professional wedding and commercial photographer looking to make big camera switch. I plan on doing some commercial video assignments for clients in the next few months. I currently own the Nikon D4 and the video as everyone knows is not very good. I see myself as aspiring filmmaker/cinematographer. I want to put together a camera package that would allow me to still do my still photographer client work, and have a video camera for client and film work. I'm think of sell the D4 and getting a used d3 and use the rest of the money on the video end. I figure I could get $4,500 - $5K for the D4. The only thing is I have invested a lot in nikon lenses. Open to the idea of sell them as well, but would need some glass with AF. Current Gear Package Nikon D4, D7000, D90 Nikon 24-70, 70-200 VR2, Tokina 11-16(F-mount), 50 1.8d, 85mm 1.4d, Vitiator series 1 70-200 (macro), Leica Summron 35mm (M-F mount). Nikon SB-900 and 910 flash Manfrotto 501HDV - Manfrotto video monopod, CFL 3 point lights, LPMicro LED video light, Zoom H4N, Filters; Variable ND (Lightcraft Mk2), Polarize, Vid atlantic cinemorph. Cameras I like BMCC 4K GH4 (I know not out yet)

According to DxOMark the dynamic range of the Nikon D800 is a whopping 14.4 stops. I have no problem believing that it is not the same as the Alexa and that the Alexa's 14 stops are calculated differently. It is interesting though that the Canon 5D Mark III only scores a mere 11.7 in the same test, making it almost a half stop less than the 6D (currently the best performing Canon DSLR in the dynamic range category) and 0.2 stops lower than the Mark II Nikon D800: http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Nikon/D800 Canon 5D Mark III http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Canon/EOS-5D-Mark-III Does anybody else find this a bit peculiar? Especially since the 5D is the "go to" DSLR for filmmakers, heck I even own one my self.

Hey! Does anyone have a suggestion for a good film-look lens with Nikon mount which doesn't cost a thousand dollars? I'm not quite happy with my lenses so far concerning the sharpness and look, as most of them are photographic lenses. Zoom wouldn't be bad, but doesn't have to be. Also of course it should be somewhat fast. Perhaps anyone has a advice or a secret tip? Shall be used on BMPCC with BMPCC-Nikon Speedbooster.

I am hoping to use the GH3 for a run-and-gun doc camera. I would like to use a lens with a long zoom range that also has built in image stabilization. Does anyone have experience or concerns with DX lenses/Metabones Speed Booster for GH3? Can I expect stabilization (VR) to function correctly? Will I run into vignetting problems? I don't use AF for video, but will it function for stills? Will the camera control the aperture, or will the dial on the adapter do that? I'm looking at the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/644744-USA/Nikon_2192_AF_S_DX_NIKKOR_18_200mm.html with Metabones Nikon G to Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster on the GH3. My calculations suggest that this should give a GH3 equivalent of 13-143mm with a 1-stop gain. Thanks! I have been reading EOSHD for a few months now and find it such a good resource. PS: Why not use a Panasonic lens? I have not been happy with panasonic lenses as they seem to have poor behavior when it comes to zooms, which I sometimes want to keep. The 14-140mm has a focus flutter on zooms, and the 12-35mm, which claims a constant aperture of 2.8, actually opens up and closes down in steps while zooming, basically creating an exposure flutter. I have samples on vimeo, but it's down right now. I can post them later if someone wants.

Hi ! I wanted to share with you my video done with a GH3, a D5200, a Dji Phantom 2 drone and a GoPro 3. I hope you dream and travel with me trough these images
