Hi everyone! I wanted to showcase my passion project "The Night Knows No Shore" here on EOSHD. I've been a long time reader of Andrew's blog and it was his footage that inspired me to get an Iscorama a long time ago. After doing tests with it for a while I came up with this idea for a movie. And you can now see the result on youtube: It's a project made by one single actor and one single crew member (me) with one single focal length (a Canon FD 85mm 1.8) and one single focus anamorphic lens ( Iscorama pre-36). Don't expect much action. It's a slow film with lots of monologues and no real plot. It's about one young man's thoughts on society, religion, art, philosophy, life in general. Have a look. If you don't like all the "pretentious" talking, maybe you like the footage. Let me know what you think. If you have any questions, just ask. Enjoy!

Hello, Long time lurker, finally decided to register to learn and contribute. I've been doing a little testing with some of my Contax Zeiss glass as a taking lens to my Iscorama. Previously, I've only used a Helios 44-2. The Zeiss is noticeably sharper and seems to work well. Sorry, no lens flares here - just a quick test of overall sharpness and bokeh. I tried using a Contax Zeiss 45mm f2.8 pancake, which made a a nice, compact setup, but it unfortunately wasn't as sharp and I'd hoped for. Drew

Hi my anamorphic friends... longtime reader here, first time poster though... With a bleeding heart, I have decided to sell my pristine and immaculate Iscorama Anamorphot 1,5 x - 54. As longtime readers here I don´t need to tell you that this baby is really the mother of dragons... errr... of Iscoramas. I belive it´s single coated... I´ll put up some photos tomorrow so you can check it out. It comes with three different adapterrings, two lenscaps and a fitting leather case. Why am I selling it? Just because I need the money for the very interesting cameras that are launching soon or have just been launched. And because I still have my nice little Iscorama Cinegon 1,8/10 that´s working wonderfully on my GH2.... so the Iscorama 54 has to go. Asking price is 2000 Euros or better... let the bidding war begin. I´m not using ebay, because I frigging hate them and paypal, too. (But will have to re-consider if no suitable offer turns up here...) But for now I will offer this beauty to the eoshd commmunity. As I said, I´ll put up some photos tomorrow, but I can also send them to you by mail. I honestly would prefer a buyer from Germany and preferably someone living close by... Long time no see, guys! I've moved to Vancouver six months ago to attend a VFX intensive course (which isn't over, by the way), and got the lens in a stroke of luck for a decent price, about the same time I moved here. Problem was I had sold my Isco 54 a while back and had no clamp or step rings to make it work. Believe me or not, took me six months to dig some time and go out hunting a decent priced step ring (a guy tried to sell me a 49-67mm for 36 bucks!). The relevant part is I'm able to run tests with it on the following weeks, I believe. I also got a regular Isco 54, and a 36 VD for comparisons. At a first glance, the 16:9 Attachment felt sharper than the 54 and, when shooting 16:9, you go straight to 2.4:1 cinemascope which is a more familiar aspect ratio for a lot of people. More on the lens body, it weights about the same as the 54, but has nice rubber rings for better grip and focus feels more natural than the 54 too (for me, the 54 focus ring is too light, almost sliding out of control). The size is exactly the same as the 54, rear thread is 72mm and front is 95mm. Minimum focus is a tad closer than the default 2m, even though the closest focus mark on the ring says 2m. I'm using a 5D3 for testing, and the lens is free of any vignetting when paired with an Helios 44 (58mm), which unfortunately doesn't happen for the Mir 1B (37mm), that shows a lot of vignette (I wouldn't even call it vignetting, actually, because it takes almost half the frame). It's not a common lens and there isn't much (almost none) information about it on the web, so lets fill this gap. Are there any specific tests or questions you guys want me to try and answer?

Testing out lenses with the Iscorama 36 wide open. I really want that separation from the background. It's easy now with the Metabones Speedbooster EF. There is something to be said about full frame lenses used with the Speedbooster vs micro 4/3rds native lenses. Also the Iscorama is the sharpest of the anamorphic adapters, although there are still some lenses that don't do well wide open. Shot on a GH4 4K (before v2.0 firmware, 16:9). Iscorama minimum distance is around 6 feet, half that with the Tokina +0.4 diopter.

I sent Christopher at vandiemen the payment on September 13 and he promised he can finish my Iscorama modding in 2 weeks. Up until now I have nothing in my hand! I paid half of the modding price on September 13, and then he finally finished the modding on October 14 (1 month vs. 2 weeks he promised). 5 days later with no single reply so I had to follow up with him to make him reply that he WILL ship my lens on Tuesday, October 21! He sent me tracking information on October 21 which made me happy until I discovered on October 31 that my lens has been returned to the sender on the same they it arrived the destination country... 4 days later, Christopher re-shipped me the lens WITHOUT any tracking number! I had to follow up with him via several emails to confirm the shipment has been dispatched with no way to track where it is. That was after the first shipment has been returned and he still sent me with even worse way. Now my $5200 investment is during its travel with no way to know where it is and when it will arrive or maybe not arrive at all :( The worst part is I can't even open a dispute on PayPal since it has passed 45 days timeframe and even I could I still can't since his invoices were not indicating this is a physical item that is eligible for PayPal buyer protection. I expect Christopher would reply me in next 2 business days if not 4-7 days as he did usually.

I've just received my second Iscorama Cinegon. The first Cinegon I have I noticed when I rotate the focus ring below 2m it will just fall apart. This doesn't happen to the original Iscorama I have. I thought it was the fault of my Cinegon at the time since its condition was so bad. When I got another Cinegon it's just exactly the same as the first one. It's like you're screwing the front glass out. So, is it normal for the Cinegon version?

Hello to everyone, My name is Mario Gorlas, i was born in hungary 1978 and live and work now for 20 years in germany. This is my first post at eoshd (i love this portal, thanks and my honor to Andrew Reid) and direct a "for sale" post. I know it's not the best idea, don't beat me, please and let me explain. I'm a guest in this forum for a long time and reading topics here a several times per week and especially i follow the works of Andrew Reid and Seb Farges. The problem was/is i never learnd english in school, since the last two years i'm teaching myself, but i'm ashamed for my bad english grammar and had big fear for bad critics, excuse me, please! We are a little filmteam of one woman and three guys. We're filming first of all weddings and also music clips and commercials. Our equipment was three Panasonic GH2, two Canon 5d MK2 and one Black Magic camera with several taking lenses, for example Voigtlander, Canon FD 50 and 85mm and this amazing anamorphic lenses. We starting to work with this anamorphic lenses in 2012, first a lttle scene here, a little scene there. Then more and more clients see our samples and want this look for there own film/clip, this 70's 80's look, they grown up with. We've produced amazing, wonderful looking videos, looking like big 70's and 80's cinematic movies, i love this optic. We've worked in november 2013 for german television on a documentary and we have now the opportunity to go on work with this television channel!! Buuut, there is a requirement, we must invest in Arri systems....ouch! You all know that this cameras are very expensive, and so must sell my anamorphic set with big big bigger tears in my eyes!!! Our cameras are all sold for fair prices except the ana's, it is no market here in germany, it seems like here is only a handfull people who worked with. For examples click the dropbox links below the pictures, there are screenshots out of quick test videos. This videos are realy quick tests, hold the ana with my hand in front of the taking lens. With the right cam and taking lens you can get amazing qualitiy. My first test of using the GH4 with Cinema 4K setting at 24hz. Also my first test with my "new" Iscorama 36. I had a hard time adapting it to a rails system, but it's OK for now. I finally understand what it's like to rack focus, as well as how sharp it is. I have to do more tests though to see what I really prefer. I like the SLR Magic a LOT for run n gun, and it is just so easy, and I really don't need diopters. However it really isn't as sharp as the Iscorama. The other option is my Sankor 2x but that's way more bulky and heavy although just as sharp wide open as the Iscorama. I used diopters in this video, that's how I got close focus. +0.5, +1 and +2. I'll do a test using the SLR Magic Achromat +0.33 and +1.33 later. The fllter thread is different though, the Iscorama being 72mm and the SLR Magic 77mm.

A lot has been questioned about this subject since it first showed up in >a> couple pictures uploaded to Redstan's flickr, or (four days later) in Andrew's first post about them, in late July, 2011. Almost three years have passed and still we don't have enough objective reviews and facts about this mod. I'm gonna try to achieve this goal here. I'm starting with a bit of history (which involves some guessing), but feel free to skip it. :) At first, it seemed that Alan (Redstan) was the one responsible for the whole thing, but now I believe he was the one who presented the the job to Van Diemen, and made a whole bunch of them at a huge cost and time. I don't think he sold any of these from the first batch, since we never heard of anyone reselling them, or using anything like that, but I might be wrong (Tony, feel free to chime in and correct me if this is wrong information). Then, time passed and a year and a half later comes Andrew Wonder, who was also featured on another EOSHD post involving a tuned iscorama, he called his "Wonderscope" and explained how he linked the pictures to Christopher Smith's machining job at Van Diemen. I come to believe it was only after this "indirect" advertising and lots of emails and questions from anamorphic shooters over the world that Van Diemen realised this "thing" could be a regular service they were the only ones able to provide. Partly thanks to Tony's many inputs on the original design and partly thanks to the sudden interest in the subject. If I'm not mistaken, early 2013 was the moment when other shooters from this forum started sending their lenses over, and we had all the fuss regarding HUGE delays in delivery and processing orders. People had their lenses trapped there for over six months, etc. Just search the forum for "Van Diemen" and some of these will be listed, followed by multiple users asking various questions about the mod. Mainly "is it worthy?", which is a VERY subjective question. I've sent my pre-36 Iscorama lens from Brazil in early December, 2013, after extensive emails with Christopher, at Van Diemen. My main concern was the time it would take to complete the job. He assured me I would have the lens back in 90 days. Recently, other forum members have reported they're >speeding the process to only a week, which is amazing (of course, this doesn't take into account the time spent during shipping). The mod is listed on Van Diemen's website, and costs £850.00 + shipping (and another £95.00 if you want special engraving). That rounds to about US$1500, which, we all should agree, is a big amount of cash. It's important to remember that not all Iscoramas are eligible for the conversion as well. Tony has pointed out that the inner workings of the anamorphot are kept intact, so if you have defective glass or bad internal mechanisms, these will be passed onto the mod. Christopher confirmed this by informing that all lenses are verified once arriving at VD's, and every single defect is reported back to the owner, as you're asked if you want to proceed with the conversion (mine has some faint markings on the rear glass). Now, what does the mod do, EXACTLY? The original Iscorama 36 weighs about 400g, has a fully plastic housing (which is pretty fragile) and focuses down to 2m without diopters (or >closer, through a hardcore mod). Rear thread is 49mm and you need some spacers to avoid hitting its rear glass onto the taking lens' front glass. Goes as wide as 50mm on a full-frame sensor and has a simple button feature for alignment. Focus throw is long (around 8mm), and if you modded yours for close focus, you need special attention so you don't drop the front element to the ground. The VD conversion weighs 680g (220g lighter than an Iscorama 54, and still much smaller than the 54 beast), because the housing is solid metal. Also, it has standard 0.8 pitch focus gears. At some point during assembly, Christopher sends you an email, confirming if focus engravings should be in feet or meters, and it focuses down to 1.1m (or 3' 7") without diopters (it's twists a little over 360 degrees, and that impresses me every time I do it), even though the closest focus engraving is 1.2m (the 1.1m mark would overlap with the infinity mark). Focus throw is 1cm long, beating the close focus mod and making your life really hard if you want a follow focus that is able to spin from infinity focus down to 1.1m. Rear threads are 58mm, and it does increase vignetting a little. It shows very slight vignetting on a Helios 44 (58mm) if stopped down, on a full-frame sensor. Aligning is still very simple, much like 1.33x lenses, where you have a rotating part with a small screw that locks the lens into position. Mine had the alignment buttons in really bad shape, so this new housing made aligning really simple, and I don't have to worry about breaking the lens apart in the process. They're also kind enough to include front and rear lens caps for safer transport. I also read - after my conversion was done - that Van Diemen redesigned the rear (clamp-like) part of the housing to avoid this extra vignetting. I couldn't find the link pointing to where I read that. If someone knows what I'm talking about, please comment below and I'll update the post! Also, if you want to improve it even more, you can follow >jaquet's tips and stuck it into a lens support so you don't even need to align it ever again. There's a recurring comparison between VD and a 54, and they are, indeed, different lenses. First of all, VD isn't necessarily multicoated, like all 54's, it's still a "medium" lens (not as small as the original 36 nor as big as the 54), but it doesn't draw so much attention, so you still have the stealth factor. Front thread is 72mm, which is a blessing for finding and using diopters, quite the opposite of the 95mm filter threads on the Isco 54. Please consider that I've owned (and used) an Isco 54 for over a year, so these aspects aren't guesses at all. The full metal body is very nice too, since many Iscoramas have had rough times since they left Isco's factory, 30-40 years ago. Mine had its filter thread broken to smaller chunks of plastic and was held together by an empty UV ring. This, added to the almost-stuck alignment mechanism, and close-focus mod made sure that I could not EVER rent the lens as it was. Damn, it's a $4000 lens, it would be nice to make some money out of it, right? VD's conversion lets you rest assured that your Iscorama will work like any regular professional lens should work: without any special information required (specially regarding quirks). Also, some other useful information not entirely related to the conversion: You should check in your country's customs office if there's a special form or procedure for items that are being sent out for servicing abroad and will return later. This will avoid paying extra taxes over the conversion costs. I know Brazil offers this option, and it's particularly useful, since I would pay a 60% tax over the declared value + shipping cost if it wasn't through this method. Plus Christopher is a really nice guy, who replies all messages and addresses every question you might have about the service. A good seller makes a hell of a difference for me.

I just secured an Iscorama 36 and I want to be able to mount it to rails so I can swap cameras and lenses easily, as well as use a follow focus. I have a vid-atlantic adapter to mount on the back that makes it a 52mm rear thread. But I don't want to screw it onto taking lenses. I'd rather just mount it on rails, makes everything easier. I was thinking of using lens collars like I do with 2x adapters, but the 52mm barrel size is quite small and I'd have to make a spacer of some kind. Any ideas are very welcome thank you!

Hello everyone, These are just some random snaps cut together using the DSO Trump FF58 with a 1.5X oval aperture inside, combined with the iscorama 1.5X anamorhic. Simulating the bokeh of a 2X anamorphic.. Anyways I thought some of the shots looked pretty good an wanted to share. Pretty cool being able to shoot this on a D800 and not go to wide like 3.25:1 Password is buds

Rather than waste even more time cutting a boring video, I've just uploaded a boring image sequence for you to download and step through frame-by-frame. The Achromats and Diopters tested were: Redstan +.25 Achromat Tokina +.4 Achromat Voightlander Focar A Voightlander Focar B And some stacked combinations of the above. Apologies if the test isn't ideal (h264 certainly isn't) - thought it was worth sharing as I've learnt a lot from people posting stuff here. Cheers, Jae.

The Iscorama 54, how many parts does it consist of? From what I seen on pictures before and people selling the lens on ebay, some are 1 part and other have 2 parts? Do you really need the 2 parts in order to shoot with it with a taking lens? Cheers

Hi anamorphic lens buffs, I've just purchased a GH3 and want to get involved in the wonderful world of anamorphic lenses... but after extensive reading and looking on ebay, I'm confused. Apologies if some of my questions are idiotic. It seems the consensus is that iscorama is the best - but with none currently on ebay I can't find how much one should be. How much should a 36 go for, or a 54, and where might I source one? What are the Isco Optic Ultra / blue star? Are these related to the iscorama? Some on ebay are labelled Isco Iscorama - is it the same company? Are these wrongly labelled? I have a Voightlander 35mm (which has a 52mm thread), which should be fine... I'm assuming I'd struggle to use my Rokinon 24mm, which has a lens circumference of 77mm, both because it is so wide at the front, but also cause it would vignette badly. On the GH3 the 35mm lens becomes roughly a 70mm. With the anamorphic adaptor, does it effectively become a 35mm again? Please could people give me their opinions of the following choices, and their pros and cons? Hey there I want to sell my lovely Iscorama 36 Nikon 50mm 2.8. It's really hard to give this beauty away but there are times where you have to do what you have to do. This lens is in a perfect condition, all glasses are free of fungus, dust, oil or scratches. The only marks of usage are visible at the white numbers on the focus ring and at the rear barrel due to too cheap mounting bracket. This bracket caused some minor scratches which doesn't effect usability at all. The optics are perfectly clear and focus ring runs very smoothly. I've got also the very rare and high quality achromat TOKINA +.4 72mm, which is used to reduce minimum focus distance with the iscorama. I was out testing my two Dog Schidt Optiks lenses in Stockholm, and found two guys playing on a street and decided to shoot them: https://vimeo.com/75661923 I have two FF58's: one low contrast + more flares and amber tone, and one with a bit more contrast but with less flaring and neutral tone. This is shot with the one that flares less.
