Well, it’s been 8 months since I completed this and almost a year since I promised @mercer to post it once completed I don’t really know what to say about this, it’s my first short and I wanted to try this medium after trying music, photography, drawing/painting and all sorts of writing in order to figure out myself and my depression. It took me months to complete due to my mental state and lack of energy and I intended to post this sooner, but life can be a little too much sometimes. Or very often in my case. Even though it was the hardest creative thing I’ve done in my life, (despite having a background or experience in most of the separate artforms that make up a film) I was really lost in the entire process and I developed love/hate relationship to it. I wanted to quit all the time when I wrote it, when prepping, when shooting and during the long, motivational drainage that is editing. But I guess that’s also where the love was born. No matter all the mistakes I made, I could somehow save it and make a decent first short thanks to the editing by re-arranging the pieces I had. Throw away most of it, stretching what was left of it, slowing or speeding up some of it, playing some of it in reverse. Dubbing in new sound (needed, cause most of it was unusable. Note to self: Don’t forget sound! I’ve tried to make another short since, but haven’t completed the shoot. I don’t know if I’ll finish that one, it’s just a silly comedy I made with my then girlfriend, now fiancée on my phone (This one was shot on the DVX200 before anyone asks, cameras are important on this forum apperantly, hehe) because she wanted me to make something less depressing, but I guess I’m just a gloomy guy, all my new ideas are based on my different malfunctions. Hopefully I’ll work up enough energy to make another, I really want to. Anyway, enough talking. I hope you’ll give this a go and give me some pointers, but go easy on me, okay? Always wanted to try out the slow motion lip sync music video thing. NB: This was purely for testing purposes. Tech: Panasonic G7 1080p @ 50fps (conformed to 25p) 1600 ISO (no noise reduction) Cine D Like Picture Profile Custom LUT Conclusion: Not perfect, but definitely a useful tool to have in the filmmaker bag ?

Shot this mini doc while on vacation in Mauritius. It's about those who work behind the scenes to uphold the illusion of paradise. Shot on GH5s, it was intended as a camera test as I wanted to see how 60p and V log play. So it's shot on either 4k 8bit or FHD 10bi at 60pt. In both cases, V log bands quite horribly even in 10 bit FHD. Unfortunately, being on vacation I didn't use an external monitor so I couldn't see the banding until I got it on my computer. I hope this is something Panasonic can fix, at least in 10bit (no excuse). I love Vlog in 10bit 4k non 60p. But I'll probably have to experiment with HGL settings which is a drag because I prefer Vlog overall and I'd hate to have to mix the two settings for a sequence. Also, I shot it with Olympus 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8. Love both of these lenses as the manual focus is excellent. I used a monopod for the 40-150 and handheld for the 12-40. Coming from a film background, I don't miss the IS. A little camera shake doesn't kill me, especially for a doc. It was my first time using the 40-150. This lens is superb and worth every penny. But it's not a handheld lens. It has the reach of a 70-200 in FF and that extra 40 over the Panasonic 35-100 makes a huge difference. Ok so there was a previous forum thread regarding a rehousing project for the LA7200. Based off the video there, I have had this design in my mind for my own rehousing project and improvements as well for close focus and/or marrying the LA7200 with a manual focus lens and making an all in one lens solution for the Canon 5d Mark III. Progress is starting off well. Getting the hang of AutoCAD and designing as such. I am planning on first prototyping with a 3d printer I have access to then going to a further manufacturing step from there. Not trying to get too ahead of myself however you can keep track of the progress and id appreciate comments or suggestions regardless as I try to work this out. Steps: Design model in AutoCad --- 15% Port model into Google Sketchup 3D print prototype Test Prototype Test again.... Make changes... Probably test again.... Use AutoCad model for CNC machining Produce final model. Planned features... Close Focus and far focus at a twist of the ring. Easy to handle enclosure Focus ring easy lens adjustment Standard housing to fit Cokin P or other diopters much easier Possible features 15mm rail mount auto adjusting focus solution Housing combined with Aperture adjustor on a Canon FD manual Lens Direct connection to the 5d Mark III basically making it a hack lens using a custom EF mount or 72mm thread AF confirm chip? (not a bad idea) All the lens flares! (ALL THE LENS FLARES!) Er multicoating removal. Something like that. Close to exact Measurements via caliper - (short of cutting the existing enclosure in half. I could not get the measurements exactly for how close the back and front lens elements are in terms of distance) Front Element - Concave Width: 84.90mm Height: 72.96mm Depth: 16.25mm Rear Element - Convex Width: 52.96mm Height: 40.99mm Depth: 4.13mm Front Element Holder depth - 17.82mm Outer Hood Depth - 13.14mm Approx 23.8mm distance between the two lenses. (not entirely sure on this. Like I said, cant figure it out unless i cut the thing in half and really I want to be able to use it until the enclosure is finished at least) All in all, working pretty well so far. Got the elements into AutoCad, and its time to start designing the enclosure for it.

Hi all, I've been a long-time reader of this blog/forum and wanted to report back on my first paid documentary commission that I just delivered. The project was for a local community outreach project that links in education and culture with Carnival arts (http://www.thenewcarnivalcompany.com/). I spent since last January (on and off) filming 4 schools and community groups as they learned about the theme (70 years of India's independence) and how that learning influenced the making of thier Carnival costumes. The last 3 minutes of the documentary is essentially a music video of the final parade through the town of Ryde, Isle of Wight. I filmed everything with 2 Panasonic GX80 cameras in 4k using primes indoors (mostly native Panasonic lenses with some Voigtlander 17/42.5). For the Carnival itself I used the 12-35 and 35-100 2.8 zooms. Everything was handheld except some of the multicam wides and the interviews. The cameras were great as it was easy to be incognito, film in the historical sites, and the cameras were not intimidating to those I filmed. I shot in standard 0, -5, 0, -5 and only focused on exposure and skintones when colour correcting. The auto WB actually worked very good. The audio was a mix of built-in camera mic, Shure VP83f, Rode SmartLav+/TascamDR10, and Instamics. I also tried to use the http://www.ohrwurmaudio.eu/ binaural microphone to better capture the ambiance of the carnival, but in the end I didn't get around to syncing it or using it. The Instamics (although quite visible in the interviews) were so useful as I could get the kids to put them on themselves and didn't have to worry about touching, and wiring up lavs. Some lessons learned: I had to move really, really fast as it involved kids and the teachers and leaders were busy - it was really run-and-gun. I missed having the audio input as I could have got better ambiance audio without having to sync - syncing is a pain. I wish the GX80 EVF was better as manual focus is hard enough. S-AF on the native lenses was key as I could ensure focus and cut out the hunting. I need to learn more about and practice audio post production and improve my editing. There are some obvious faults (interview eyelines, cluttered backgrounds, slight focus issues, IBIS panning judder, under/overexposure on unmanned b-cam) but overall the client and the organisations that funded the project were very happy with the film. It took me about 70 hours of editing with 15 hours / 700GB (including multicam) of footage.

I wanted to see which Picture Profile on my G7 give the best skin tones, as well as the general differences of each one. All profiles are set to -5 Contrast, -5 Sharpness, -5 NR, -1 Saturation (except Vivid which is -2). The only grading is a contrast curve (I also added grain). Lens: Canon FD 28mm 2.8 w/ Focal Reducer (shot wide open). Shot in 4K, 500iso, 3200k color temp. CinelikeD seems to yield the flattest image and maybe the most dynamic range, and it's the profile I've used the most for that reason, until now. I kinda think CinelikeV might have better skin tones. Aside from Vivid and Monochrome, most of the others barely look any different from each other. All of this is subjective of course, but I thought other G7 uses might be interested.

Recently created a new (one-off) LUT for the Panasonic GH2 because like me, I know there are people out there who still use (or would love to get back into using) this soon to be forgotten gem of a camera for video. Though it's not free, it's still cheaper than a Golden Arches Meal and worth checking out the page even if it's just out of curiosity. Thank you. Hi, I have long looked at this site and the forum for inspiration, it was one of the reasons i chose to get a GH4 to replace my old (and much loved) Canon 550d.. I don't often make short films, mostly i film corporate films (with a DVX200), but recently my friend and i, had an idea for this little film. We filmed it over 2 days, and besides the GH4, some of the equipment used, was a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens, Zhongyi Lens Turbo (focal reducer), some Yongnuo yn300 LED lights and lot of other things, like a variable ND filter, called Vu Scion (which is really good! It gives a really "natural" image.) I hope you like the film, and i really hope you will let me know what you think we can do better! /Ulrik Jepsen

Would like to know what you think about our newest work. Shot with the infamous Panasonic GH4, internal V-LOG 8bit, -5/-5 NR and sharpness. Used Panasonic lenses: 12-35mm 2.8, 20mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7. Used a Tiffen Black Satin Filter to get rid of the sharpning artifacts still left over at -5 and add some smoothness to highlights and shadows. Budget: about 0$.

First 2 videos are in 4K 30p. Last video was shot in 1080p30. You see a little less noise in 1080p because of the crop and that's why I decided to shoot it in that mode. All clips done in fully automatic. Shutter was always at 60.

I was lucky to have received a test unit of the Panasonic UX90 camcorder. I have it until the 28th of this month. I wrote a lot more in the description of the video. I can't wait to do more videos with this such as a Lion Dance competition coming up. -
Shot this on my GH4 in one night. Used some color foils on my cheap Yongnuo YN300 LEDs and my Panasonic 20mm 1.7 lens. Recording was done internally in 4K DCI VLOG 8 bit, so some artifacts are definitely there. Tried to create a dark, gritty but colorful look. This video was recorded close to Shirokovskaya hydrostation (Russia, Perm region). The hydrostation was built mostly by German prisoners of war during the world war second years. Video shows satellites motion, Perseids star stream and the Milky Way. Almost 2000 frames were made for 8 recording hours. My new years resolution for 2016 is to take my camera as many places as I can and make a monthly video summary! I had a little go at practising this last month in December, I didn’t film nearly as much as I would have liked but hopefully I’ll get better at it over the new year. Cheers for watching, I'll keep anyone who's interested up to date with how its going - it would be really cool if anyone's doing the same or similar to share their videos too.

Hey guys! I'm looking to get into video work, and I'm trying to figure out which camera would best suit my needs. I'm looking for a camera with great stills as well as video. The 3 main contenders for me are panasonic's gh3 and g6 and Nikon's d5300. All of them offer full HD at 24 at 60fps, which is crucial for me. They also all have a 3.5mm jack for external microphone. These specs are similar, but Panasonic's seem to be better for video. If it was video alone, I would choose the Panasonic cameras. But, I'm also looking for great stills. Right now I have the sony a58, and I don't want anything under the quality of its stills. The d5300 has better dynamic range, AF, sensor size, and low light performance. I've heard that the d5300 is one of the best APS-C sensor cameras for video, but it's also one of the most annoying to use. I don't want to sacrifice any stills/video quality.
