I've been using the SmallHD DP7 and loving it, but it's pretty heavy. Using it on top of my GH4 with a hot shoe swivel head is clunky. It falls down all of the time. Comes loose. You name it. I searched the market for anything that would attach both sides of the monitor allowing for swivel, and a sturdy grip. Found nothing. I decided to build it myself out of parts found on eBay, and B&H. Here are the links to parts I used: CAGE: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FHUGEN-HONU-V2-0-VIDEO-CAGE-Kit-with-Top-Handle-HDMI-Clamp-for-GH3-GH4-A7-A7R-/231302638084?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35dab62a04 SIDE RAIL CLAMP: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281056066980?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT 2 PACK OF LONG 1/4"-20 SCREWS: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=920351&gclid=CPqemNGJ1cACFYk7Mgod2EoAfw&is=REG&Q=&A=details 2 LONG BRACKETS: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1062515-REG/desmond_d3d_3_mini_stereo_camera_bracket.html This could also be useful for the A7S and Shogun combo. I'll admit that this isn't ideal if you need to mount a microphone, but if you're going handheld for video only it's sturdy as hell.

We are already discussing monitors that allow for proper anamorphic monitoring here: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/1832-monitors-for-2x-and-15x-stretch-preview/ But I thought that it would be useful to have one thread where we all share our Custom Scale settings for anamorphic monitoring (especially since Magic Lantern has brought back 4:3 shooting in raw mode at assorted resolutions). For those unfamiliar with this feature, the best description that I have found is in the manual for the old DP1: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/uploads/gallery/album_14/gallery_18451_14_22383.png

How to crop 2x footage to 1.5x footage on a SmallHD monitor
QuickHitRecord posted a topic in Cameras
Many people find that a 2x (3.55:1) aspect ratio is just too narrow for their liking. The good news is that if you are using a 2x lens and you have a DP4 monitor, you can compose and shoot in 1.5x. This allows us to enjoy all the benefits of 2x glass (greater availability, lower prices, more dramatically stretched bokeh) with none of the headache. Here's how to do it:

Choose a Preset number so that you don't have to make these adjustments every time (just scroll back to the Preset).
Under the Advanced Menu, go to Scale and select 2.35:1.
Go to Custom Scale and input the following values:

HSTART: 706

HSIZE: 94

VSTART: 500

VSIZE: 600
Now you are set to monitor in 1.5x. I have created an Apple Compressor setting that I just drag-and-drop onto incoming footage that squeezes AND crops the footage to 1.5x before I even begin my edit. It helps keep my render time down and I don't even have to deal with the trimmed footage area if I don't want to. These values may also work on the DP6, but I haven't tried it. -
I just got an email from SmallHD about some of the features of their new DP7 monitors that will be hitting the market this Fall. Of particular interest to the people who frequent this forum: ANAMORPHIC DE-SQUEEZE 2x, 1.5x, 1.33x — However your image is squeezed, the DP7 can correct the image to appear at the correct aspect ratio, even with DSLR scale. Particularly handy is the ability to send the un-squeezed picture downstream to other monitors for clients/directors who usually prefer non-squishy images (Coming Fall 2012 via free software upgrade). You can already more or less manipulate the DP4 and DP6 to display your 3.55:1 image (as well as the other standard crop ratios), but it's nice that they thought to add it in as a preset. After shelling out all of this dough for anamorphic lenses, not everyone will be able to afford a DP7 (myself included), but I would not be surprised if this is pushed out to the lower-end monitors as well in the next firmware update. Let's hope that the good folks at SmallHD are feeling generous!

Trouble Shooting in anamorphic with external monitor on GH2
taylorjcamarot posted a topic in Cameras
My name is Taylor, im a student filmmaker in Sedona and have just recently switched to cinematography as my major. This is my first time posting on this site, however i have been following for a while (i own the GH2 shooters guide and anamorphic shooters guide). If i am posting in the wrong place, feel free to bump/ let me know how to fix. I am a new owner of the GH2 and have hacked it with the anamorphic hack in the anamorphic shooters guide. It works fantastic when i dont have a external monitor plugged in, shooting in beautiful 2.66:1 with an incredible bitrate. However, when i plug in my DP6 the gh2 automatically switches out of mjpeg (4:3) and into variable movie mode (16:9). Is there some setting i am missing? If anyone has any advice id appreciate it!
